Can this be linked to Google Voice from within Canada and still be free as it is in the US?
Yes.
You’ll need to sign up for Google Voice from a US IP address. Once it is signed up for it can be used from anywhere in the world.
a friend of mine told me that in order to open a google voice account i must be in the states or in canada I’m currently in israel can i set it up from here? i have magic jack for years are there any advantages to magic jack over OBI?
Don’t listen to your friend. Just try to open an account. It takes 5 minutes.
You must set it up from the US or with a US IP address by using a US proxy. Afterwards you can use it from Israel.
No, use a proxy or have someone in the US set it up
Does the phone or fax have to connect directly to the oBi? What if they are not near the router?
How does this compare to ooma in call quality?
I’ve never used Ooma, but call quality on this is perfect for me.
Thanks, how can i get a 718 number with that? any previous post to reference?
Do you have an existing number that you want to port?
No, any easy way of getting it via different carrier and porting it?
if you have an existing landline number through “optimum” for example, is there any way to port that number after closing the optimum line?
You need to port it to a cell phone first. You can use any cheap prepaid carrier to port it there and from there to Google.
Does anyone who has this notice that they get more spam calls? That is my concern with this being Google and all…any insight is appreciated.
I don’t get any spam calls on my OBi.
Good to know, thanks!
how does it work with wifi
Can you call 911 with it?
No is the short answer.
You can pay an extra monthly fee and sign up with a 911 provider. Go to http://www.obitalk.com for more info
I believe You can call. They just won’t automatically know your location.
Can someone please explain how to do this?
“you’ll have to first port it to a prepaid cell service”
