Amazon’s Cashierless Store Of The Future Is Now Open In Chicago

Amazon Go opened their first store to the public in Seattle earlier this year and the concept is now spreading across the nation. Today they opened a store at 113 South Franklin Street in Chicago, IL. Later this year they will bring Amazon Go stores to NYC and San Francisco.

Amazon Go stores are currently smaller stores to test the waters, but make no mistake, this will be the store of the future. When the technology is perfected I have no doubt that they will introduce it in Whole Foods stores and then other stores will be forced to copy them. There’s a reason that Amazon bought the Whole Foods chain and my guess is that it was because Jeff Bezos would love to change the face of retail just like he changed and now dominates online sales.

The checkout clerk job will go the way of the milkman, lamplighter, elevator operator, switchboard operator, film processor, and the flight engineer. Truck or taxi drivers are not far behind for that matter.

The store concept is simple. You scan your phone as you walk in to login with your Amazon account, take whatever you want off the shelves, and just walk out. You’ll get a receipt as soon as you leave the store. You won’t have to interact with a single employee wait in a single line, or scan any of your purchased items.

Cameras in the store follow you around, though they don’t use facial recognition to do so. There are also sensors on the shelf that allow Amazon to know exactly how many items you take.

There are employees that are there to help people out and to prepare fresh food, but the job of a cashier is now on borrowed time.

Have you shopped at an Amazon Go store yet?

Funny thing about no checkout lines is that there’s a line to get in the store!

Moshe

Not anymore. Only when it was new and a ton of people where trying to get in.

Ice been shopping cashierless at Sam’s Club for a while now already

What if you pick something from the shelve, walk around the store and ask your kid to put it back? Maybe there will be a line to help you while you’re in the store. It will be interesting to see how amazon solves that kind of problem.

Way of the future? Not any time soon.

They charge you, and your kid gets a store credit.

As long as some NYC MTA stations has elevators, there will always be elevator operators. Thank the Unions.

Well said.

Like the old joke. A guy was sitting in Central Park and he sees two city employees going along the path , one digging a hole and the other filling it up. After seeing them do it multiple times he cant help but go over and ask what they are up to.
They respond-“well the third guy whose job is to put the seeds in the ground didn’t show up todAy and we ain’t losin a days pay cuz of that!”

Sam

And as the saying goes – I don’t necessarily believe the story, but they don’t tell such stories about you and me.

What if your phone dies in middle of shopping

Ben

You’ll get the receipt when you recharge the phone. It doesn’t need to see your phone to keep track

It makes it much easier for ganavim who won’t scan their phones and will cart the carts full of goodies w/o paying

Gnedy

You can’t enter without a scan! And they have your face pic when you come in as well. And security will be alerted automatically.
