Average Joe

Please please please I beg everybody, buy fire extinguishers for your home, and practice using them.

A few years ago I was in the park with my kids when I got a call from my wife, who was 2 weeks after birth. She was crying hysterically “fire fire, the toaster oven is on fire”. I screamed through the phone at the top of my lungs “rip open the cabinet under the sink, pull out the fire extinguisher (which I had mounted on the inner door of the cabinet so that it would not get lost in the junk under the sink) pull the pin, spray at the base of the flames. If you don’t do that right now the house will burn down. Do you understand?” She said yes, I hung up the phone and called my brother-in-law who was staying in the apartment underneath us to run upstairs and help her. I then called the fire department.

My brother-in-law called me back 2 minutes later to tell me that by screaming that at her it had shocked her out of her panic (which was what I was aiming for) and by the time he got upstairs she had already extinguished the fire.

There was a two week old baby sleeping in a bedroom, multiple people in the apartment building who are advanced in age, chas veshalom what could have happened if I didn’t have that 50 shekel fire extinguisher sitting under the sink.

You should have one on every floor in an easily accessible place, and at least one smoke detector on every floor.

Also periodically do a pantomime of using it.
Go get it, hold it, fake pulling the pin, aiming and pushing the right place on the handle.
In a panic, practice will take over.
(I had one in my hand and in my panic couldn’t think of how to use it. so my kitchen was badly damaged. )
