With the exception of SPG/Marriott, it’s rarely worth converting hotel points into airline miles.
10K IHG points normally convert into 2K airline miles. As IHG sells points during a sale for 0.5 cents each, that would value airline miles at 2.5 cents, which is more than they’re worth.
However currently you can transfer increments of 10K IHG points into 3K United miles with a 50% transfer bonus through 6/30. If you haven’t transfer hotel points to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles since May 2017 you can also transfer increments of 10K IHG points into 3K Asia Miles with a 50% transfer bonus through 6/30.
IHG has points on sale ending today for 0.5 cents each. If you buy increments of 10K IHG points on sale now for $50 and transfer them in 3K miles that’s like paying 1.67 cent per mile. That’s less than the airlines charge, but I wouldn’t do that speculatively. However there can definitely be value in that if you have a specific award in mind that will provide a value greater than 1.67 cents per mile or if you are short some miles to have enough for a redemption.
Note that Cathay Pacific is devaluing their award chart on 6/22, but there are still good values to be had from the program afterward.
