Update: Commenter “mw” notes that you are now able to purchase more Starpoints even if you already purchased the maximum 30K Starpoints for your account earlier this year.

If your account is targeted for a discount you can also purchase Starpoints for other accounts with the same discount, just select “Give Starpoints.”

The discounted point offer ends tonight!

-The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express offers 25K points for spending $5,000 in 3 months

Starwood allows you to buy up to 30,000 Starpoints per year. They are normally 3.5 cents each, but through 12/31 you can save between 25%-50% off Starpoints here.

Just login to your SPG account to find your offer. With the discount you can pay as little as 1.75 cents per Starpoint, a record low price for Starpoints if you have that offer. If you pay with a Starwood AMEX you’ll also get 2 points per dollar, so if you buy 30K points for $525 you’ll also be earning 1,050 Starpoints for the credit card purchase. In total you will have paid $525 for 31,050 Starpoints or 1.69 cents per Starpoint.

As Starpoints can convert to airline miles at a 20K:25K ratio, the cost per mile can be as low as 1.4 cents.  Starpoints can also convert to Marriott points at a 1K:3K ratio, so the cost per Marriott points can be as low as 0.58 cents each.

If you use your Starwood AMEX you’ll also get 2 Starpoints per dollar spent, so you’re effective cost per points will be just 1.69 cents as you’ll get an extra 1,050 Starpoints for a $525 purchase of 30,000 Starpoints.

Your account needs to be 14 days old to buy Starpoints. While there is a limit of 30K Starpoints per person, people living in the same household can transfer Starpoints between each other for free. It even extends the life of their Starpoints by another 18 months.

There are tons of great uses for Starpoints:

You can use them to stay in Starwood or Marriott hotels.

-You can transfer Starpoints to Alaska via Virgin America with a 62.5% bonus through 1/6/17. A flight from the US to Europe or South America will start at 12.3K Starpoints, business class on Cathay to Asia will be 30.7K Starpoints, and business class on Cathay to Israel will be 38.4K Starpoints after an effective 38.5% transfer discount.

90K Starpoints is currently enough for 132K United miles and a 7 night hotel stay via Marriott.

90K Starpoints is also enough for 7 nights in a Marriott hotel, 120K Southwest points, and a Southwest companion pass via Marriott that is valid for the remainder of the year and the entire following year. You can make the transfer in January of 2017 and you would be able to fly with a companion for free through December of 2018!

-Or you can start saving up to play softball in Wrigley, cruise to Antarctica, or throw out the first pitch of the 2017 World Series with SPG Moments.

What offer are you targeted for and will you be buying Starpoints?

Netlevy

They probably want to sell back the 1M point you gave them 😉

elie

50% but not worth to buy

Dan

@elie:
It is at that rate. You wouldn’t buy United miles for about 1 cent each?

Don’t want to go for a Southwest Companion pass?

mendy

i don’t know if this is the right place to post this but got a question for dan.
but how do i do this 90K “Starpoints is also enough for 7 nights in a Marriott hotel, 120K Southwest points, and a Southwest companion pass via Marriott”
please send link for me to follow the steps

Welder

Transfer 90K Starwood for 270K Marriott.
Call Marriott to transfer the 270K Marriott into 7 nights in a Marriott hotel certificate and 120K Southwest points.

The companion pass comes automcatically.
Best to wait until January though.

@Welder:
Nice.

Got offered 50% – Thanks

What is the best credit card to charge the cost to (billing by Points.com)?

JM

I got a targeted offer to buy 1,060,500 points! 😜

yy

I got 35%, my wife got 30%.

Rebbe

25%

Moshe

50%, wife 30%. Bought 18k on mine and 15k on my wife’s. I used my Amex SPG card as I recall there being extra points earned on this type of purchase. Dan can you confirm this?

Floyd Russak

I only got 25%.

SPG

50% !!

Isaac M.

My offer was 35%. If we decide to buy, should we use SPG AmEx or better off with a different card? Thanks…

Dan

@SPG:
Awesome!

@Isaac M.:
Yes, you’ll get double Starpoints with that card!
With 50% off you may as well max this out.

Welder

@Dan:
Factoring in the double starpoints, what’s the effective cost per point in this promo, 1.69?

Daniel

I logged in to my spg account and I do not see any promo listed. Where do I look to find this?

Dan
Isaac K.

Targeted for 50%, wife for 35%.

Considering buying 30K at 50% with SPG Amex. I am wary of buying any kind of points but with the 20:25 ratio to miles its actually a good deal. But is it still worthwhile getting any more at 35% on my wife’s account?

wudi2k5

Clearly 50% is a great deal.
Is the deal considered a good deal at 35% off, ill be using spg CC?

elie

@dan I dont consider “buying” points as a good option when usually u dont save to much with points (when flying economy)and you dont have your flexibility with timings etc. if you get it it through sign ups okay…. but buying starpoints if you dont have something right now to do with it IMHO not worth even with this rate

Dan

@Isaac K.:
@wudi2k5:
Depends what you’ll use them for.

Definitely can be good for Southwest or United Marriott packages.

@elie:
Generally speaking you’re right. But 50% is an exceptional rate.
Combined with the points for the purchase it means getting United miles for under a cent each.

yy

@Dan: Right, but RT coach to Israel is 85K on United. At a penny a point, that’s no bargain.

Dan

@yy:
It depends on the award.

If you need an emergency last minute one-way from NYC-TLV then spending 42.5K United miles for a $4,000 ticket is a bargain (I just helped someone this week in that scenario.)

Obviously there are awards that are a penny each, but it’s not hard to get 2 cents or better from United miles.

yy

@Dan: Given that I can get United miles for about about $0.0058 by using my Ink card to buy $300 VGCs at staples.com. Of course, with Staples Visa/MC gift card rebates every week these days, I can get Chase points at negative cost. SPG points are valuable (especially to those of us who don’t have the Chase Sapphire Reserve) because they’re transferable to so many airlines. I can’t see wasting them on United.

SPG

I got this message when i wanted to transfer:

Your SPG account and or the receiving SPG account needs to be active for 30 days or more in order to transfer Starpoints between accounts

Bob

Is this not considered an “eligible purchase” to earn 5x points when using SPG card?

Kim

@elie:

I use my starpoints for experiences; sometimes that makes it worth it – for example for 35K points I was able to take my daughter to see her favorite artist at MSG AND sit in spg suite with food/beverages, the seats that come with it are fantastic, so for the $525; I look at that purchase and feel we got a great deal with what concert tickets cost for just regular seats – plus this was a whole evening out for us; meal included 🙂

Pointed Question

@Dan: Dan what does one have to do if anything to get @double spg points@ if purchasing points with % off and using the Amex SPG card?

Anonymous

@Dan: How do we get double points buying points with SPG card and is it double the money paid say $500 so 1000 points or the matched value of points bought say 5000 becomes 10000…

Dan

@Pointed Question:
It’s automatic.

@Anonymous:
Did you read the post?
“If you buy 30K points for $525 you’ll also be earning 1,050 Starpoints for the credit card purchase. In total you will have paid $525 for 31,050 Starpoints or 1.69 cents per Starpoint.”

E

25% oh well…

F2

30% !! is it still worth it?

Yisroel

Wish I can get ahold of this deal, but only got a 30% offer.
Bit of a complicated question here. Is there any combination (meaning combination of transferring SOG to X and then transfer etc) possible to have someone who does have such an offer purchase and gift them to me in a way that would allow me to still get the Southwest Marriot deal? That would be so so sweet!

Bin

Dan, if you don’t mind answering my Q about holding onto the SPG card. Both me and my wife each have a SPG card(and I have a business SPG TOO) I want to cancel hers because I really don’t use it and $95 doesn’t seem to be justified by anything anymore. Am I wrong? Is it time to cancel? (Since no downgrade option)

mw

Its pretty crazy, I bought 30K on both mine and my wife’s account several days ago and just now I tried again since I was several thousand short of 90k–and the site let me buy another 30K on each account, with the same discount (in my case 35%)!– take advantage of this while you can if it works, assuming you plan to convert to 270K marriott and then redeem for hotel certificate and SW companion pass + 120K points. Did anyone else experience this? The only thing I can think of was that I first bought the points on my mobile, and now bought it on the desktop…The points posted before the start 2017….

NiceSharky

I maxed out on SPG purchased points earlier this year and was blocked from this latest promotion when I checked yesterday…but I just checked again and saw 35% offer. I’m planning to leverage into Cathay and VX/AS promotions.

Moshe and isaac

Gut voch Dan

Is there any way of knowing if this will affect the 2017 limit of purchasing 30k point maximum? It’s still a great deal because we would still get the 2016 forwards 2017s limit…

SPG

It’s gone.
