Please Note: Alitalia’s financial situation is sub-optimal.  Therefore I am not recommending that you should transfer Starwood/AMEX points into Alitalia until you have a mileage ticket on hold that you are ready to book (In reality you should almost never transfer Starwood or AMEX points to an airline until you have an award ticket on hold).  Booking a mileage ticket for travel on a Skyteam partner airline will also be safer than booking for travel on Alitalia just in case they go under.

Alitalia has really good mileage rates from the US and best of all they don’t slap you with a fuel surcharge on award tickets!

You can transfer 20,000 Starwood Starpoints for 25,000 Alitalia Millemiglia miles. AMEX MR points transfer at an equal 1,000:1,000 ratio.

Some of the rates are actually incredible. Here are some favorites at rates that are significantly less than most domestic programs:

-Israel for 50K in coach or 80K in business! The 80K award is good for non-stop travel in Continental’s BusinessFirst and Delta’s BusinessElite cabins. Reported availability on Alitalia is good as well.

-Hawaii for 30K in coach or 60K in business! Either way you go you’ll want to find seats on Continental. They still serve full kosher meals for free in coach (When I flew 11 hours on United from Chicago to Honolulu there were only $5 snacks for sale!) and no airline comes close to their international BusinessFirst seating to Hawaii non-stop from Houston, Los Angeles, and Newark.

Here are the Alitalia mileage rates to/from the US48. Travel is allowed on Alitalia or any Skyteam partner (Currently these include Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air France/KLM, China Southern, Continental, Czech, Delta, Korean, and Northwest) at these rates:

-Europe/”Near East”/Northern Africa (This category includes Israel): Coach: 50,000. Business: 80,000.

-Continental US/Canada: Coach: 25,000. Business: 40,000

-Hawaii/Central America/Caribbean: Coach: 30,000. Business: 60,000

-South America Zone 1: Coach: 35,000. Business: 60,000

-South America Zone 2: Coach: 50,000. Business: 75,000

-Northern Asia: Coach: 60,000. Business: 90,000

-Southern Asia: Coach: 70,000. Business: 95,000

-India/Maldives/Nepal: Coach: 80,000. Business: 100,000

-Australia/Pacific: Coach: 100,000. Business: 150,000

-Southern Africa: Coach: 100,000. Business: 150,000

@Rochel:
Make a acount on alitalia – find the flight you want ask them to put it on hold (tell them you are transfering points – they’ll understand – then transfer the points on spg and make your ticket!

Just wondering if anyone has heard that AA will start charging 50,000 miles for domestic flights begining in October?

moshe

Do you have to call them to make flights on skyteam partners (delta, continental etc) or is there some way to view those at the site?

ben

saw on here http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/item.aspx?type=blog&ak=51628886.blog&csp=34 that AA will not charge 50,000 for regular domestic flights, it’s only for certain types of award tickets (and I’m quite glad about that too)
