The Sheraton Iguazu Falls Will Leave SPG Later This Month

Iguazu Falls is one of my favorite places on Earth.

I wrote about it last year in this trip report. As I said in that report, “I had been to Iguaçu Falls in 2005 and loved the place. Eleanor Roosevelt had it right when she said “Poor Niagara” upon seeing it. Instead of being in middle of a concrete jungle, it’s in middle of beautiful rainforest with wonderfully fresh air. It’s much bigger and far grander than Niagara Falls.”

While Niagara Falls gets boring after a few hours, you could spend days exploring Iguazu Falls.

When visiting Iguazu you’ll want to stay in the park. On the Brazil side that means the Belmond and on the Argentina side that means the Sheraton.

I stayed in the Belmond in 2005 before it was renovated, the location is amazing with panoramic views of the incredible waterfalls.

I stayed in the Sheraton in 2014 with my family as it was a good use of Starpoints. The hotel lost power, but the rooms were nice and you’re right in middle of the falls. The Argentine side doesn’t have the views that the Brazilian side offers, but you can get up and close with the falls in a way that’s very unique. Either way, you simply must view the falls from both sides.

You can fly into IGU on the Brazilian side with an inexpensive flight from Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, or you can fly into IGR on the Argentine from Buenos Aires. You can call BA to use Avios to fly into either airport.

Sadly, the Sheraton will leave the SPG program on September 29th. The plan is to renovate it so that it can fly the Four Seasons flag in the future. Another good point hotel bites the dust.

A few years ago Hyatt announced plans for a Park Hyatt hotel on the Brazilian side that was supposed to have opened this year, but I haven’t seen anything to indicate that the hotel ever came to fruition.

Are they honoring existing reservations? I stayed about a fifteen years ago, and am finally returning: I have award reservations for later this year. I have my airline tickets booked, too. Given the lack of any equivalent hotel, cancelling my reservation would be quite bad for me.

Tom

Bummer – I was looking forward to this. SPG Platinum, and I have a 2 night stay scheduled in January 🙁

Tom

Just contacted the SPG Platinum Guest customer service, and they said that my existing reservation would be honored, but I would not receive any stay credit not Platinum benefits. I’ll take the loss of benefits as long as I have the room!

Tom

Just to make certain, I contacted customer service once again, and this time they weren’t quite as positive. They gave me the email for the group responsible for the transition of the hotel and asked that I contact them directly. I sent an email out today, and I will post an update when I hear back from them. Keeping my hopes up for a good outcome for this stay.

Hey Tom – I have the same dilemma as you. Award reservation confirmed for December 2017. Did you receive any response from the Hotel?

Tom

Very disappointed with Sheraton’s response, especially since I am a Plantinum member. It’s been a week without even an acknowledgement of my email. Two weeks before the hotel leaves the system, and they should be proactively contacting those of us who have award reservations. I’ve made alternative arrangements in Puerto Iguazu at the Falls Iguazu Hotel and Spa that I can cancel if SPG comes through. Won’t be in the park, but a taxi will get us there rather quickly – they also have an offer for a free transfer from the airport through Dec 22.

Tom

Finally got a firm answer. They will honor the award stay, but you don’t get any SPG benefits, such as upgrades, etc. Not certain I am going to stay here for my January visit.

Iguazu was amazing – went in 2015. Just a heads ups: As an American I needed to get a visa to enter Brazil, and then there was an entry fee (~$125) to go to the Argentina side for the day. Would think the same applies for visitors on the Argentina side to enter Brazil.
