About Uber:

Uber is a pretty awesome app. With options like the low-cost UberX I’ve done day trips to cities like Chicago and NYC without having to rent a car thanks to rides that are cheaper than a taxi and far more convenient. And while people wait for an hour in the taxi line I breeze right into a waiting car.

Rates in NYC are typically triple the rates in cities like Cleveland, Chicago, LA, and Miami, but that’s the cost of riding in the big city I guess. Outside of NYC, rates can be ridiculously cheap these days as rates have plummeted to compete with other startups.

You can get a free $20 Uber ride via this referral link.

Uber is also fantastic for food delivery. Stuck in Miami airport during a delay or connection with no kosher food? Make an order with a restaurant on 41st st in Miami Beach and pay for it over the phone.  Just confirm with them that you’ll be using Uber and ask if they can bring it out to the Uber driver when you call them back.

When the food is ready just have Uber go to the restaurant address and text or call the Uber driver to let him know what you’re trying to do. When the driver is at the restaurant just call the restaurant and have them bring the food out to the driver.  Food delivered from Shemtovs, House of Dog, or Miami Beach Chocolates to the airport will run you just $15 (free for new Uber users).

Using UberX to bring delicious food from Shallots to Chicago’s O’ Hare Airport would run just $15 and from Milt’s to O’ Hare it’s only $20.
I’ve done food delivery like that flawlessly in cities around the world.

21.5% back on Uber riders worldwide:

I’m not a fan of Capital One cards.  They’re the only bank that does hard pulls with all 3 credit reporting agencies when you apply for a card and their rewards are not as generous as those offered by other banks.

But I’ll admit to doing a double take at the Uber partnership they pulled off.

From now through 04/30/16 Capital One Quicksilver cardholders will get a 20% statement credit for all Uber rides anywhere in the world, including UberTaxi. That’s on top of the 1.5% cash back that the card offers, so the total rebate will be 21.5%.  If they’re new to Uber they can also use promo code CAPITALONE to get 2 free $30 rides.  More details here and here.

Other cards give the equivalent of up to 4.95% back as I covered in this post, but 21.5% back is really  impressive.

The QuickSilver card has no annual fee and offers $100 cash back when you spend $500. The 1.5% cash back is bested by many other cash back and mileage cards, but if you’re a heavy Uber user, it can definitely make sense to get the card. There are no foreign transaction fees.

Starpoints on top of cash back:

You can earn between 1-2 Starpoints per dollar spent on Uber no matter what credit card you use. Click here to learn how to earn Starpoints on top of other promotions.

UberPool promotions:

1. From today through 04/26 you can ride anywhere within Manhattan below 125th St for just $5 when you select UberPool.

UberPool is Uber’s version of the carpool. You may be set up with another rider going to the same approximate place as you.  Or you may not be set up. Either way you’ll pay just $5!

2. On weekends (between 11:30pm on Fridays until 5am on Mondays) from April 17 – May 18 you can use UberPool to or from Williamsburg (11211 or 11249) and Manhattan (anywhere between 11th st and 18th st) for just $5. That rate applies whether or not you actually get setup to ride with someone else.

I applied a few weeks back and got denied, and had no luck with reconsideration. I usually have no issue getting Chase or Amex cards. Any tips on getting approved?

Ari

There’s a company that has $5 ride-sharing in manhattan all the time – http://www.ridewithvia.com.

The food delivery using Uber is very YMMV. I tried several restaurants in LA/Pico and none would work with me to have Uber deliver to my LAX hotel.

Dan

@MarktMan:
Huh?
How would the restaurant have Uber deliver to you?

You make an order and call for the Uber to pick it up at the restaurant and bring it to you.

Yosseld

@Dan
From Shemtovs to MIA I assume? Just thought I’d clarify.

Can I use your link amd the capital one code and get $20 plus 2 x $30 ?

ikey

It would be helpful to mention that the lowest price UberX does not work FROM Chicago’s airports only the much more pricy UberBlack. I only learnt about this after landing at Midway and was very disappointed. You did mention this in a previous post and a commenter wrote a cute workaround.

Dan

@Anonymous:
Good question.
Do you have a Cap1 card?

@ikey:
Several workarounds for that, but for food delivery it doesn’t matter as it’s going to the airport.

ELI

@Dan: yes (forgot to write my name before)

joey

dan, i wanna ride in a rolls royce again, can u please find me a promo for it ill send you some pics

Cap1 faq States that UberTaxi is included.

Regarding uber for food delivery:

1. Regarding kashrus, you must ask the restaurant to double seal it, with a noticeable seal. I am not 100% sure of the exact halochos, but you should ask LOR or google it.

2. Not all restaurants will accommodate you, if there is no parking you will need them to come outside to the car.

3. In theory the driver can choose to take a longer route to charge more for the drive, especially if you are located in a non so popular uber area.

Dan

@j: .
Good catch.

@Miami:
1. True.
2. Never had an issue.
3. You get a receipt with the route taken. If it’s out of the way just click fare review and you’ll get a refund.

Hao

does buying an Uber gift card work with this?
