United Adding New Point To Point Non-Hub Routes

Before COVID, United moved to eliminate nearly all flights that don’t begin or end in one of their hub airports of Chicago, Denver, Guam, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington/IAD. Other network carriers, like Delta, have been more willing to have flights that don’t operate to one of their hubs.

But last August, United added seasonal point to point flights to Florida and this March they added seasonal summer destinations from the Midwest to the East Coast.

And now they’re back with a slew of new flights, including the largest mainline schedule from Cleveland since the airport was dehubbed by disgraced former CEO Jeff Smisek back in 2014. Mr. Smisek also pulled United out of JFK, which current CEO Scott Kirby has since reversed.

While last winter United also offered flights from Boston and LaGuardia to Florida, they won’t be repeating those routes this winter.

Here are United’s point-to-point routes that don’t fly to any hub airports:

  • Cleveland-Cancun: Saturday service from now through end of scheduling and Sunday service from 10/31/21-12/12/21 and 3/27/22-5/1/22 and 6/5/22 through end of scheduling
  • Cleveland-Fort Lauderdale: Daily service from now through end of scheduling and double daily service from 12/16/21-1/3/22 and 3/4/22-3/26/22.
  • Cleveland-Fort Myers: Daily service from now through end of scheduling and double daily service from 12/16/21-3/26/22.
  • Cleveland-Las Vegas: Daily service from 12/16/21 through 3/26/22.
  • Cleveland-Nassau: Saturday service from 12/18/21 through end of scheduling.
  • Cleveland-Orlando: Daily service from now through end of scheduling and double daily service from 10/31/21-3/26/22.
  • Cleveland-Phoenix: Daily service from 12/16/21 through 3/26/22.
  • Cleveland-Tampa: Daily service from 10/31/21 through 3/26/22.
  • Columbus-Fort Myers: Saturday service from 12/18/21-4/30/22.
  • Indianapolis-Fort Myers: Daily service from 12/16/21-4/3/22.
  • Indianapolis-Orlando: Saturday service from 12/18/21-4/30/22.
  • Milwaukee-Fort Myers: Daily service from 12/16/21-4/3/22.
  • Orange County-Aspen: Daily service from 12/16/21-3/26/22.
  • Orange County-Honolulu: Daily service from now through end of scheduling.
  • Pittsburgh-Fort Myers: Saturday service from 12/18/21-4/30/22.

I’m just excited to have nonstop flights back to Vegas on a non low-cost carrier. I love Kosher Chinglish, the best and most authentic kosher Chinese food in the world by a country mile, and I love the Utah national parks that are accessible from Vegas.

Will you fly on any of these flights?

They have plenty of funds from government bailouts, ie our tax dollars, for them to invest with…

i guess that means dan will be visiting his family more often here in sofla

Yochai

Looks like they’re almost re-hubbing CLE.

CtownBin

Certainly half-way there- although notable omissions from not only the hub days, but long after the hub days- are Cleveland-LaGuardia and Cleveland-Boston. These were actually only removed in the last year or 2, long after the de-hubbing. Presumably, as evidenced by what they brought back, this is because they are focusing on mostly leisure travel- like many airlines in kind-of-post-COVID.

Hey Dan! Is there a way to see what new routes were added for a particular city?

P.S. – Memphis got JetBlue for the first time ever! MEM > LGA and LGA > MEM.
One flight a day each way. Gotta start somewhere! 🙂

Izz

I don’t see anything on MEM to LGA. Are you sure it’s not jetblue codeshare which is operated by AA?

They wouldn’t fly to LGA and not to JFK first too.

Dave

Do you or anyone have an idea when United is bringing back KSML in economy or business this is getting to be very annoying and unreasonable

anonymous

how far out is “through end of scheduling”?

Izz

Generally 11-12 months.

HI Daniel,

Thank you for this informative article.
I think they will be starting a CLE-TLV flight soon.
