6 months ago, American and JetBlue announced that they would form a new partnership. We haven’t heard much about it since then, but more details have now been released following a review by the DOT. The DOT will make the airlines divest of some slots from JFK and Washington/DCA and refrain from partnering in city pairs where there is little competition.
I’d guess that United will pick up some of those slots as they look to expand their new JFK flights. American will also likely transfer slots to JetBlue to expand their domestic operations from LaGuardia.
- The airlines will offer more seamless connectivity and better travel choices on new codeshare routes to and from New York (JFK, LGA and EWR) and Boston (BOS). Both airlines will offer the ability to book connections between the airlines on one ticket from each of their websites.
- JetBlue will significantly grow their presence at LaGuardia and Newark and provide domestic additional feed to connect to American long-haul flights from JFK and Boston. Flight schedules will be aligned to allow for connections.
- There will be loyalty reciprocity between the airlines, including the ability to redeem AA miles for JetBlue flights and JetBlue points for AA flights. There will also be elite benefit reciprocity for both airlines.
- American will stop flying their ERJ-145 and CRJ-200 aircraft to NYC, so that all American flights to NYC will feature first class seating by the end of this year.
- American will launch service from JFK-Tel Aviv and JFK-Athens this summer. That comes after years of shrinking their presence at JFK. The new flights will be made possible thanks to feed from JetBlue flights. American plans to add many more new long-haul routes from JFK as well.
If American follows through with the JFK-Tel Aviv route this summer, it will launch even before its Dallas-Tel Aviv route gets off the ground.
