If you flight is cancelled or is significantly changed, you can receive a cash refund per DoT regulations.

That’s why I don’t recommend cancelling a flight before it’s close to the time of departure.

However, assuming your flight is operating, these are the cancellation options on major domestic airlines:

  • Alaska:
    • All tickets purchased on or before 2/26 for travel through 12/31 can be changed free of charge for travel or funds can be redeposited into your Alaska wallet for future travel. Award tickets will be refunded free of charge. The difference in fare will still apply.
    • All tickets purchased between 2/27-6/30 can be changed free of charge or funds can be redeposited into your Alaska wallet for future travel. Award tickets will be refunded free of charge. The difference in fare will still apply.
  • American:
    • All tickets for travel through 9/30 can be changed one time free of charge. The difference in fare will still apply.
    • Paid tickets purchased between 3/1 through 5/31 can be changed one time free of charge. The difference in fare will still apply.
    • Awards booked by 6/30 for travel through 9/30 can be refunded for free.
  • Delta:
    • All tickets for travel through 9/30/20 can be changed for free to travel through 9/30/22. You can change your dates without paying any difference in fare if you travel by 9/30/20.
    • All tickets purchased between 3/1-6/30 can be changed one time free of charge for travel for one year. The difference in fare will still apply.
  • JetBlue:
    • All tickets purchased between 2/27-6/30 for travel by 6/1 can receive a refund to your JetBlue travel bank for use by anyone within 2 years of the redeposit date.
  • Southwest:
    • Southwest always allows for free flight changes. The difference in fare will still apply, though exceptions are occasionally available online. Travel funds will be valid through 9/7/22. Alternatively, you can refund tickets into points at the same rate it would cost to buy your flights. Points never expire and have no cancellation fees..
  • United:
    • All tickets purchased on or before 3/2 for travel through 12/31 can be changed free of charge by 6/30 for travel within 2 years. You can receive a voucher for the difference in fare under this waiver if the new ticket is less expensive than the original ticket. The difference in fare will still apply. You can also request a voucher valid for 2 years.
    • All ticket purchases between 3/3-3/31 can be changed free of charge for travel within 2 years. If the new flight is priced lower, the customer may change for free but no residual value will be given under this waiver. The difference in fare will still apply. You can also request a voucher valid for 2 years.
    • All ticket purchases between 4/1-6/30 can be changed free of charge for travel within 1 year. If the new flight is priced lower, the customer may change for free but no residual value will be given under this waiver. The difference in fare will still apply. You can also request a voucher valid for 2 years.
    • All award travel for travel through 12/31 can be redeposited for free as long as they’re cancelled at least 30 days before travel.

Dan, I followed the top link to your 5/12 discussion about refunds. My flight was 5/7 and I was force into 5 UA certs because the new flight was only 5 hours not 6. Can I go back and complain that my offer for a cash refund was refused? It was a total of $2,600.00 which I would love right now! I bought them back in February.

If I understand correctly, Delta allows free changes to travel before 9/30 regardless of when the ticket was purchased? If I want to fly before 9/30, can I just book the cheapest available date and then change for free?

Dave

It’s too bad that it wouldnt cover travel dates for Succos

dave

dan,

when’s the next time your getting on a plane? are you ready to jump back in or your gonna need more time?

JackBlue

I booked a UA ticket to TLV for Sunday the 31st, didn’t get permission to come in to Isreal, called UA today and they said I can get refunded to the CC I used.

Problem is I used Chase UR for the booking. Let’s see what happens!

JackBlue

BH points are back in account.

I would love Delta ( who is finically
the healthiest of the legacy airlines but would be OK with any major doing it to force competition) to eliminate change fees ( I’ll begrudgingly give them baggage fees – cause of CC benefits).

I think in some ways it would be a small PR coup – and set them apart. I would also be ok if they made that a CC benefit. Difference in fare would be fine.

American also extended until June 30. Was in The app middle of last week.

Dan does this apply to multi city? Can I cancel, change or get a credit on a round trip if I change my mind? AND if yes even if for example I have a flight from TLV to BWI with a stopover in JFK can i leave at JFK and still get my refund/credit?
Thanks

Ar

Dan I’m confused about the Delta policy. You wrote:
“All tickets for travel through 9/30 can be changed for free through 9/30/22. You can change your dates without paying any difference in fare if you travel by 9/30/20.”
What year is the first 9/30 you mention and is the last one supposed to be 9/30/20 or a later year? And is 9/30/22 correct for when it can be changed through? The years seem a little confusing but maybe I’m misunderstanding. Thank you!

sara

important to note that the t&c of american free cancellation for award tickets is only for the account holder. If you booked tickets for other people on your account you must pay redeposit fees to get your miles back

az

Dan, how about international airlines?
ty!

jew

Does AA free cancellations on mileage tickets include web specials?

Eli

Dan, how you compare Delta One A330-300 vs United business Dreamliner to TLV ?

Me

Haven’t seen an update so asking here.
Delta – Is there no refund or voucher if you cancel? also their website says no fare difference if booked by a specific data.

AC
