Earlier this year OneWorld carrier Qantas announced that they ordered planes that will be able to fly nonstop from Sydney to JFK and London. Those planes are expected to arrive in last 2025.

But Star Alliance carrier Air New Zealand will start flying nonstop 3 times a week between Auckland and JFK next month on the 787-9, giving them a big head start over their trans-Tasman competitor. That’s especially true since Qantas stopped flying from Los Angeles to JFK, meaning that passengers must change airlines and terminals to fly on Qantas to NYC.

Qantas announced today (well, technically tomorrow) that they too will fly nonstop between Auckland and JFK 3 times a week on the 787-9 starting on 6/14/23. You will be able to seamlessly secure transit connections on Qantas to cities like Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Sydney from Auckland. That’s a major bonus over connecting in US airports where you need to clear customs, recheck your bags, and go through security again. Qantas hopes to grow from 3 weekly flight to more frequent service as well.

You can purchase the nonstop between JFK and Auckland or together with a connecting flight to Australia.

In celebration of the new route, all of the seats on the plane flying on June 16th from JFK to Auckland and Auckland to JFK will be bookable as classic saver awards with Qantas miles in economy, premium economy, and business class. Qantas calls such flights a “points plane” and I wish that other airlines would run occasional promotions like that as well. Points plane connections will also be available to Melbourne and Brisbane.

The Qantas 787-9 Dreamliner has 42 lie-flat business class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 38 premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, and 166 economy seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.

Qantas also announced that they will update and improve their Auckland lounge facilities.

The Qantas flight will depart Auckland on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 5pm and arrive into JFK at 5:15pm the same day, clocking in at 16 hours and 15 minutes. It will depart from JFK on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7:30pm and arrive into Auckland at 5am, 2 days after departure, clocking in at 17.5 hours.

When there’s partner award availability loaded for the flights, the best way to book will be with Alaska miles at just 42.5K in coach, 47.5K in premium economy, and 55K in business class each way.

When will this go on sale and when will the award space be released? Secondly, will the award space be exclusive to Qantas at first or will it be made available to partners like Alaska and AA?

I think this is a wonderful option, I did once Mel, Auc, LA, JFK with Air new Z and we had a wonderful trip but being able to get straight to JFK will avoid a lot of headache (on the way back we missed the connecting flight in LA)

dont you have to clear customs in australia if you stop in auckland and change airlines to fly to syndney or melbourne and recheck luggage so i dont understand what you gain by not having to stop in la? thank you

shyh

First stop in USA you need to collect your luggage for customs and check in, and collect again your and you final destination. When JFK is your final destination you only need to collect your luggage once. There are a few country’s that you are clearing customs when you check in arriving as a domestic trip, collect your luggage and leave.
