Just wanted to wish my Jewish readers out there a happy Pesach.

I’m celebrating it with my family out in the desert oasis of Palm Springs in an awesome house that we rented for the week and a half.  Ya’ just can’t always get away with using points!

Still debating between staying in the SLS Beverly Hills (Starwood category 5) or the Andaz West Hollywood (Hyatt category 4) for a couple nights after the holiday, feel free to share your thoughts.

You can read the logistics of how we do our biyearly Pesach pilgrimage in these trip notes from 2 years ago.

Next year in (the Waldforf Astoria) Jerusalem? Anyone going to stock up on Hilton points for under half a cent each in anticipation of that hotel opening?

I stayed in the SLS with my 17 year old son. I was embarrassed to be there with him, and I am M.O. Totally a party scene with girls walking all around hotel in skimpy bikinis, and High heels. Just to let you know

What do you hold about new chase ba offer for 100k avios but with $20K in spending?

Dror

Have a great Pesach Dan! Just dont forget to give over the message to your cute little rafael that in Egypt the Jews didn`t have any airline or hotel points, and that true freedom is spiritual perfection and not persuing luxury and physical satisfaction!

Gut Yom Tov to all! Chag Kasher V’Sameach!

SLS – go have dinner at La Seine – one of the best high-end kosher restaurants anywhere (get the tasting menu). The Bazaar (bar) at the SLS is very interesting and truly bizarre. Very California.

@James:

Happy Passover and Happy Easter everyone!

Happy Passover. Here in Springfield MO there were no matzo’s at my local Dillons (a Kroger brand) so I had to go to a more distant store.

Regarding SLS or Andaz, there were labor disputes and loud picketing at the Andaz last year. I no longer live in LA so can’t conveniently drive by and tell you if they are still there but maybe another reader can.

andaz in great part of town, but not such a great makeover since the days of the hyatt west hollywood. i miss the days of led zeppelin driving motorcycles through the halls, and the mini aquariums built into the walls of the corner suites!

ac

yes, stocking up on the points. And thinking of getting a Hilton time share to use the points there. Any thoughts?

mendy

does amazon payments work towards the $3,000 for Chase Saphire?

Hey dan, hope your pesach is fabulous
Regarding the hilton points: YES I will certainly start collecting ’em in anticipation of the waldorf astoria in Jerusalem. However I’m very nervous about the recent devaluation in Hilton points. Can u give us some input/your thoughts on this?
Thanks

Mendy

@ Yaks
Is there any maximum that you can do, for amazon payments?

chaim

those trip notes were a fun read!

Bob

@Mendy: $1,000 each month. Make sure to send the money to a non-relative, as the same last name can be a red flag.

Amie

Take a drive up to Idyllwild. You won’t regret it.

Dan,

I moved from the SLS to the Andaz last November. The SLS is like staying in a disco. It’s VERY dark, and the rooms are weird. The best feature is the TV behind the mirror, but other than that, it’s for drug dealer and movie producer types. The Andaz has a minibar with free snacks and non alcoholic beverages.

SLS... one-of-a-kind [non-family] hotel!

As several people implied: a spectacular hotel that is extremely romance-centric. The decor, slogans, lighting, etc, are very high-end but are not very family-friendly.

Excellent choice for a one-night getaway; maybe not for a family stay.

Dan, hope you’re enjoying the holiday of freedom. If you are going to be hanging around LA for a couple of days you gotta try the Tierra Sur restaurant in the Herzog winery, Oxnard CA (hour N of LA) I have been to the most fanciest and prestigious rest. (Paris,NYC,Florida, Israel…) And I believe the Tierra is in the major leagues of kosher restaurants a must try for any connisuer especially of fine wine I was blown away!maybe tell them you have a huge fan base so they should comp you as its quite pricey:-)
