Prime Minister Trudeau announced today that Americans who have immediate family living in Canada can enter Canada starting at 11:59pm tonight. That includes “spouses, common-law partners, dependent children and their children, parents and legal guardians.”
You will have to quarantine for 14 days in a place where you’ll have access to food and medicine and you’ll have to stay in the country for at least 15 days. Fines for violating quarantine in Canada can be as high as $1MM and 3 years in prison.

I drove in last week with my kids. As a Canadian my foreign born children and I have right of entry. I had to meet with a quarantine officer at the border to discuss how I would be quarantining. I’m already back in the states but I have received multiple phonecalls to check that I wasn’t leaving the house there. They were ok with me driving back home the next day.
I also heard some stories like this. I wonder if anything changed now??

Thanks for the info Shguga! I also heard from the Public Health people that it’s not considered breaking quarantine to leave the country in a car, without stopping, even within 14 days. This makes sense, you don’t come into contact with anyone driving in a car. But I have heard the regulations may now have changed to make this not true anymore? When the quarantine officer called you and you told him that actually you had already driven back to the States, how did he respond to that? Thanks.

The new regulations are that you must come for 15 days or else they consider it tourism and you can be banned from entering canada
There is an exception to the staying for 15 days. Per the government “Asymptomatic foreign national immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who intend to stay in Canada for 14 days or less may still enter Canada as long as their entry is not for a purpose that is discretionary and, if seeking entry from the United States, are able to comply with the requirement to quarantine based on their purpose of travel and intended length of stay”
Is there a way to prove immediate family?
It looks like you can go for less than 14 days if your visit is not discretionary. But what does that include? A wedding or bar mitzvah? And if you need to isolate you can’t attend in any case. Very confusing.
You definitely CANNOT attend a Simcha, that’s breaking the 14-day quarantine, even a Canadian citizen wouldn’t be able to do that unfortunately.

We are Israeli citizens living in the Usa, with a unique circumstance. Our Elal flights were canceled twice (flight for 5/4, & 6/30 – cancelled today). Consulate neglected our first application to return (submitted 4/7), and we are still awaiting and staying hopeful about the second application (submitted 5/31). We liquidated and closed up our life in the Usa hoping to bounce out by 6/30. With today’s cancellation we are now stranded. Within the past ten min we’ve recalibrated to now try going to family in Canada with this positive post from Canada, if the Israel trip isn’t sorted out. We’ll see how that pans out.

If you enter, you have to be in quarantine for 14, but if you want to go back right away to the US they let you ( the quarantine is only if you stay in Canada)

I have children and Grandchildren who are on Shluchos in Toronto. I cannot afford to stay there for 15 days and self quarantine. Trudeau is as bad as deBlasio, Wolf, and Neusome. Dictators on and all.
The fact that they won’t accommodate you does not make them dictators. They other concerns besides your convenience. I have children and grandchildren in Canada as well and will visit them as soon as practical. I don’t want to stay there for 14 days purely to isolate though. I don’t mind isolating for the period of time I am there but even that is really inconvenient. However, I’ll follow the Canadian rules as long as I’m in Canada.
