Prime Minister Trudeau announced today that Americans who have immediate family living in Canada can enter Canada starting at 11:59pm tonight. That includes “spouses, common-law partners, dependent children and their children, parents and legal guardians.”

You will have to quarantine for 14 days in a place where you’ll have access to food and medicine and you’ll have to stay in the country for at least 15 days. Fines for violating quarantine in Canada can be as high as $1MM and 3 years in prison.

Will you travel between the US and Canada to visit immediate family if you have to quarantine for 14 days?

They have no way to know if I came back to the US

Duh

Sure they do. You have to go through immigration weather you drive or fly

Abraham

Nops. They don’t know when you leave by car. (They could ask the US but they don’t)

Joe

The US tells Canada of arrivals they see by land. It’s a reciprocal arrangement.

Abraham

Since when? This wasn’t few years ego

Joe

Canadian details here:
https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/btb-pdf/ebsiip-asfipi-eng.html

“Canada receives biographic entry information from the United States (U.S.) on all travellers who enter the U.S. through a land border crossing, thereby enabling the creation of a Canadian exit record.“

Mike

Can you travel from Canada to the states?

Abraham

American? Yes

Abraham

I would go for a Shabbes, But Don’t want to stay there for 14 days. Why is this??

jack

how about canadians entering US for immediate family?

Someone

Alot of people have been flying with no issues.

NW

Driving shouldn’t be a problem either, the main issue is Canada

Shguga

I drove in last week with my kids. As a Canadian my foreign born children and I have right of entry. I had to meet with a quarantine officer at the border to discuss how I would be quarantining. I’m already back in the states but I have received multiple phonecalls to check that I wasn’t leaving the house there. They were ok with me driving back home the next day.

Abraham

I also heard some stories like this. I wonder if anything changed now??

simon

Can u Pls share in detail how and what the process was for you?

CtownBin

Thanks for the info Shguga! I also heard from the Public Health people that it’s not considered breaking quarantine to leave the country in a car, without stopping, even within 14 days. This makes sense, you don’t come into contact with anyone driving in a car. But I have heard the regulations may now have changed to make this not true anymore? When the quarantine officer called you and you told him that actually you had already driven back to the States, how did he respond to that? Thanks.

Moshe

They only call the house phone, no? (and if it’s linked to your cell, you might not want to tell them)

Ld

The new regulations are that you must come for 15 days or else they consider it tourism and you can be banned from entering canada

Canadian Fellow

There is an exception to the staying for 15 days. Per the government “Asymptomatic foreign national immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who intend to stay in Canada for 14 days or less may still enter Canada as long as their entry is not for a purpose that is discretionary and, if seeking entry from the United States, are able to comply with the requirement to quarantine based on their purpose of travel and intended length of stay”

Brooke

Is there a way to prove immediate family?

History Buff

It looks like you can go for less than 14 days if your visit is not discretionary. But what does that include? A wedding or bar mitzvah? And if you need to isolate you can’t attend in any case. Very confusing.

CtownBin

You definitely CANNOT attend a Simcha, that’s breaking the 14-day quarantine, even a Canadian citizen wouldn’t be able to do that unfortunately.

Berny

What about Dual citizens living in Canada and visiting family in the US. Do they have to quarantine upon their return even without symptoms?

BMS

yes

Anonymous

We are Israeli citizens living in the Usa, with a unique circumstance. Our Elal flights were canceled twice (flight for 5/4, & 6/30 – cancelled today). Consulate neglected our first application to return (submitted 4/7), and we are still awaiting and staying hopeful about the second application (submitted 5/31). We liquidated and closed up our life in the Usa hoping to bounce out by 6/30. With today’s cancellation we are now stranded. Within the past ten min we’ve recalibrated to now try going to family in Canada with this positive post from Canada, if the Israel trip isn’t sorted out. We’ll see how that pans out.

Eli

How are you stranded, you can fly united to israel

Anonymous

Yes, true, but our currency/points is already converted to another program and we don’t want to double spend.

..If only there were numbers to contact ElAl & Israeli consulate.

Eli

What you need the Israeli consulate for?

Anonymous

Unique situation that requires permission.

What’s the most inexpensive direct flight(s) o/w nyc->Tlv?

Let\'s Go!

A round trip ticket and discard the return!

Eli

You said you’re Israeli citizen, you don’t need permission to enter Israel.

Lou Dearfield

If you enter, you have to be in quarantine for 14, but if you want to go back right away to the US they let you ( the quarantine is only if you stay in Canada)

Abraham

@Dan please clarify if this is true

Nechoma

I second this @Dan. Please let us know if you can return before the 14 days are up.

Shguga

That’s what I did. Was in Canada less than 24 hours.

simon

is this accurate?

Moshe

Yes. You have to call the quarantine office to let them know that you are leaving the house and going back to the USA.

Shira Katz

Is there a number for the quarantine office so one can confirm this before making the trip???

Abraham

Where can i verify this info?

Moshe

I got that info by calling the border. Try 1-855-906-5585 or 613-221-3100 for the quarantine office.

P

Do I need to be a Canadian citizen for this?

CtownBin

Thanks for the info Moshe! Did you make that call before yesterday or after? There are some reports that this rule on quarantine changed (meaning, you can no longer leave Canada within the 14 days), but it needs verification either way. Thanks!

Moshe

I called yesterday. But the quarantine office is probably more accurate

Benr

Non of these 2 numbers are being answered (have recordings). Can you please provide a real source or contact, it’s quite urgent. TY

Joe

No, I will not travel to a socialist county, that requires 14 prison for US citizens

Moshe

Canadians also have to. Anyone entering, has to.

Berel Sholom Tzvi

I have children and Grandchildren who are on Shluchos in Toronto. I cannot afford to stay there for 15 days and self quarantine. Trudeau is as bad as deBlasio, Wolf, and Neusome. Dictators on and all.

History Buff

The fact that they won’t accommodate you does not make them dictators. They other concerns besides your convenience. I have children and grandchildren in Canada as well and will visit them as soon as practical. I don’t want to stay there for 14 days purely to isolate though. I don’t mind isolating for the period of time I am there but even that is really inconvenient. However, I’ll follow the Canadian rules as long as I’m in Canada.

NW

There’s no problem going there for under 14 days, as long as your quarantined

Joe

While other countries are talking already about opening for tourist, They are still in a controlled mind, and they are enjoying every minute, I wonder how it would affect their economy

Abraham

I’m Canadian. My wife and children are not. Can I take them along?

Sr

Yes

NW

+1 you’ll still have to quarantine

Andrew E

Does anyone know if there could be a leniency to cross the border to see a fiance?

NW

There’s no exceptions except essential workers

Sr

Can a Canadian enter the usa?

NW

It depends, they generally aren’t specific

Moshe

Not really by car. Chances are they won’t let. Flying is easier.

Dual citizens have an easier time

Nachshon

What if you’re just making a connection in Toronto? Do they allow flying domestic connection from the states then transferring to El Al to TLV? (Not leaving the airport)

NW

It’s not an issue
