Credit card fraud is a part of life in 2017.

It’s not a question of if, but when hackers will get their hands on your credit card number.

I’ve been hit for random small amounts of fraud before, but it amazes me that Chase would allow 3 large charges at Harley Davidson dealerships in Michigan and Wisconsin to go through unchallenged:

How is it that I can have small charges denied for fraud in my home city while large charges in other states for an activity that I’ve never done goes through?

My MileagePlus Club Mastercard seems to be my card that keeps on getting hacked. It was originally used fraudulently after the Home Depot hack, but its happened a couple of times since then. Perhaps Chase is tired of me having the card for $100/year grandfathered annual fee instead of $450/year? I rarely use the card these days, unless I’m abroad. But the benefits it provides are pretty sweet.

At any rate, I sure hope that the fraudster has biked south of the border by now 😉

Of course, Chase credited me back for the charges and send me a new card number. It’s a good reminder that besides for earning miles and having purchase protections, it’s a lot safer to use a credit card than a debit card due to the additional fraud protections that credit cards provide. Additionally when fraud happens on a debit card, your cash is zapped out of your account until the investigation is completed, whereas credit card fraud means never losing access to your cash.

It seems that these days another hack makes the news every week. There are lots of services out there that will offer to protect you, but personally I just check all of my credit card transactions at least once a week and view my credit report on annualcreditreport.com several times a year.

just had on my chase sapphire reserve cc and chase did the same and sent a new one

Dan the Biker

You’d look good on a Harley

Josh S

Interesting. My Chase United card also had frauduleant charges on it last week.

United hack?

Michael

One of my cc was used to purchase 6 expeditions in Africa at a hefty price. The charges were approved, though of course they were later refunded.

Zalmy

I’ll never forget how, before an INTL trip, I spent thousands on all sorts of weird asian websites for hotels tickets and tours without a problem

But when I charged $11 at a Bodega 2 blocks from home address the next day, my card was flagged for fraud

Avi

Same here. I’m overseas right now and spent about $1500 in the last few days but a 4$ charge at Dublin donuts got me two check ins from capital one

machine learning is not so smart yet.

Payless shoes… 1000 dollars… that’s a lot of junk shoes.

jack

Is there a punchline I’m missing with the picture?

Shlomo

I once had a $6000+ charge at a Best buy in Texas that went through. It was chase as well.

Mountain Man

Who eats the loss in this case Chase or Hal’s Harley?

Hmmm

I think it depends on if a chip was used. It’s possible Harley will be on the hook… Though generally I think chase eats it.

David S

In this case, Harley most likely suffers the loss. If they upgraded their terminals to require EMV chip cards, the fraudsters card wouldn’t work as the chip can’t be duplicated. If it was a phone or website order, or their store wasn’t updated for EMV, the mechant is almost always responsible. The only likely scenario where they would be covered is if Dan’s card was not issued with a chip, and the fake card was swiped in the store.

Doug

Chip cards have already been hacked.

sure happens all the time I had a wellsfargo CC (got it with my accounts figured if I had to use the debit I might as well get some points and use the cc with a pin) they replaced it 4 times and with in 3 days of activation id have a charge that was in random location around the us (CT OH NV..) after the police report and all the fun stuff I found that WF (Wachovia at the time) had a system where the card number on the CC was internally connected to a different # and the thieve got the back end # and was using it online.

another 🙂 :(((

used amex SPG in FL at target and got declined (I live in ny) had to call to confirm I had the card and was informed that a charge was placed 5 min earlier at JFK (my point of origin that morning) spg sent me a rush new card and gave my a phone # to call if I had to make a transaction and they approve it over the phone , was hard to explain to the rep at avis why she needs to charge a card for me over the phone

junkyardunz

Hey Dan,

Dave Ramsey claims that debit cards offer the exact same protection as credit cards against fraud. Can you call up Dave Ramsey one day and fight it out with him ?

Mali

Depends if you use the pin or swipe as credit.

Ben

Heard from multiple chase reps that debit card doesn’t give same protection.

Once had my chase card hacked and was used at a coffee shop online, that looked like fake website.

Bank of America

my boa debit card always give me the money instantly when I’m disputing a charge…

Dee

Way back with my first card, chase freedom, it was used at an escort service. Chase picked up on that one tho and called me 😉

Ricardo

I had a charge on my business citi AA card for Frederick’s of Hollywood, And it wasn’t my size

Abe

My friend knows someone that’s a local Sherrif & he had his cc info stolen and the crook bought a Suzuki bike, my friend being law inforcement did some digging and found out were this crook lived (turned out to live just over an hour drive from him) so he gave him a visit the rest is history 😉

Not the fraudster

Once got a call to confirm a Starbucks purchase for my chase freedom card was legit. They failed to inform/ask me about other transactions the day prior. Days later I noticed the prior day to my Starbucks purchase someone placed 3 fradulent product purchases at B&H, BestBuy and Target, totaling $6,000. Amazing – got it all back with little effort.

Dan – what do you recommend in light of the Equifax hack to protect oneself? Are you a fan of CreditKarma?

Valentino Rossi

It was me. I sincerely apologize.

YouG

My chase card was used for $55 in stubhub and a day later $1250 and right after I filed claim and cancelled it another charge for 1500 Ticketmaster got approved.

Kalman Finkelstein

Capital one puts the money right back into your account when your card is used fraudulently. My son had his wallet stolen in Tel Aviv and his card was used shortly thereafter in Ramallah. I went to the bank and they immediately removed the charges and issued a new card on the spot.

Kalman Finkelstein

I am talking about a debit card.

WAM

Before you went to the bank, did the charge from Ramallah deduct anything out of the bank account? Because that would make a huge difference. Imagine a mortgage payment getting returned due to insufficient funds. Tack on the other auto pays that withdraw from your bank account… It can be quite a costly mess.

Avi

Tatoo parlors in Atlanta, we live in Baltimore!

JF

Why not use this credit card to get one and a half points per dollar ? which credit card offers currently offers more than 1 point for basic transactions ?

Joe

Speaking of hackers, I would love to hear what you recommend doing about the Equifax hack. Freeze our credit reports?

Shani P.

Here is an interesting angle to the discussion – I work for an online fraud prevention company called NoFraud and deal with this all the time. There are actually two levels of fraud detection that should catch fraudulent charges (online): at the bank and at the merchant themselves. With in-store purchases, fraud liability shifts to the bank for those that have adopted EMV ship technology, but with online purchases the eCommerce merchant needs to ensure that the legitimate cardholder is the one making the purchase. I am not sure if your fraudulent charge was online or not, but I thought it is interesting addition to the discussion. Your compromised card could have actually been used multiple times before unsuccessfully due to effective fraud prevention.

Sadly after using my cc at restaurants in Israel we have more than once gotten calls from Chase asking if account holders were in Romania or Jordan. This was several years ago. My chase preferred was hacked about every 3-4 months last year, AMEX never. Why is that?

D

Does chase sapphire preferred cover I travel insurance for rebooking if your air embarking flights get canceled ?

Sillypainter

Interesting how I had also a Harley Shop fraud charge like 5 years ago and when my wife asked them how they knew right away that it’s fraud. Here is what they answered…. We have a complete profile on you, and we know that you are not a Harley rider……

Same thing happened by me on a Shabbos where there was a giftcardmall.com purchase and they stopped it right away, I assume they know I’m SS.

Identity Theft Victim

Dan,
What’s the best credit card that offers credit monitoring?

schlomo

United Mileage Plus card has been hit for me too. My theory is that I use it for car rentals (because of the coverage) and those guys that work there are sometimes very shady looking.

It’s just too much of a coincidence when it’s always the M.P. card and I *only* use it for car rentals. I guess they figure I am away from home when I rent a car, so I wont notice the fraud.

Last time we flew out of ORD, someone grabbed my wife’s info over RFID in the security line, printed a fake card and had already bought dinner in Rosemont at Capital Grill before we landed in Miami along with a bunch of expensive stuff at the high end mall in Rosemont. Why do they put the RFID on every card? It was very easy for us to figure out what had happened.

Soloman Orgel

Dan I’ll pose you again this question that I pm’ed you and asked it on the forum several times what company do you use to monitor you credit?

Eli

Got my Chase Ink Bold card stolen (they cloned the card) – used in a few establishments in Miami. I called one of the places and they sent me the video footage of the guy using the card. The next day I get a call from the owner of the store and she tells me the guy is in the store right now sitting down and eating. We got his name (he used his own card that day and they checked the name on the card). Turns out he’s a convicted felon who spent time in jail for manslaughter. I called the Miami-Dade police and told them where they could find him, but they dragged their feet and 30 minutes later they told me no officer picked up the call. The guy left and I had the owner get me his plate number and make and model of the car. I called the cops back and gave them the info. They said they would be in touch, but the following week they had more important things to do with the hurricane, so no one ever called me.

Eh…got a new card, and the experience of literally tracking down the guy who stole my card.

ABC just did an interview with a frum woman…Dina Wolhendler, who did something similar except she actually found the woman in person who had stolen her wallet and approached her and got her arrested. Not bad Mrs. Wolhendler, not bad at all.

ephraim

This is a reason to take advantage of getting an alert every time your card is swiped via text or email.
I know chase offer it .

Ed Travel

One time I had a card that I never used. I used it once on batteries.com and a couple of months later a fraudulent charge appeared. I googled and it seems an employee from the company was doing it…

ninjaleh

ticketmaster, hundreds of dollars, i caught it before chase did tho.

yy

I had some small charges for Uber in Beijing on one of my Amex cards.

Ganev

Dan sorry I really needed that bike..

Mirel

How did u get the 100 dollar rate ?

HeavenlyJane

I haven’t read the entire comment stream but am I the only one who sets the credit card alerts on $1? I get a text every time my CC is used, thus I usually know within 5 minutes that my CC’s been compromised. Once the thief was still in the store – that was satisfying.

Jb

I live in New York and several week someone hacked my gold preferred Amex and charged $900 on there cable bill in Michigan. This was not denied. I fought the bill and I lost! I called Amex up going nuts and they suggested I file fraud charge rather than just fight the charge. I did that and then the charge went away. But how stupid were they when I live in ny, her cable bills in ny and all of a sudden a cable bill for $900 from Michigan a cable service shows up and they allow it to got though and then have the nerve to deny my denial on th charge. Amazes me

rebyid

Dan, with your MS, matress runs, mileage runs, etc, you have rather bizarre and unpredictable spending patterns, to say the least. It’s a wonder that any algorithm could sort out your spending from a hacker’s.

Al

I think somebody at Synchrony Bank-the Sam’S Club card issuer-is getting rich selling card numbers and expiration dates. My Sam’s card was charged 2 times for $5000 in Mission Viejo, CA at a used car dealer and, at the same time, 3 rooms at an Embassy Suites in North Dakota. The Orange Co SO has a felony warrant in the system for the car buyer but ND didn’t follow up.

davidrotts63

weird thing is everyone is complaining about this with chase while chase always declined my large purchases (on new accounts) bec of fraund and other companies never do that.

Lkm

My husband has several Chase cards yet when someone claiming to be him requested a new credit card chase sent it to a different address in a state 500 miles away! When my husband googled the address it was sent to it appeared to be a Starbucks. The same week someone opened a Citibank card in his name in another state. I’m still scratching my head over why the banks would send cards to addresses that aren’t on his credit report. Fortunately we get credit alerts from several sources so my husband was able to close the accounts within a week of them being opened.

Maifriend

Maybe Chase thought you have to have balls to show up at HD dealership to use stolen cc number.

lamomma

The very few times that my card number was misused, the cc company caught the problem and called me right away, such as a merchandise order for delivery to a strange location, a hotel charge.
My favorite story happened to in-laws in Ohio. They did some shopping on a Saturday night in the winter, and the company called them because they had noticed a pattern of NO Saturday charges.
Also, who pays for fraudulent charges? Like shoplifting, we all do. Costs are passed on to all of the legitimate customers.

JACKSASSONBK

ive had $10,000 in home depot go through on my card in 50 separate purchases. chase ink card. and a handful of other not kosher spots, burger king, shake shack, etc.
i called them up and they pulled me through 2 hours of questioning before finally filing a claim.

a month later they refunded me like half the money. probably thought i would not catch on, but i did and they ended up giving me back all the money.

funny thing is that they called me when i went to shop in jerusalem glatt in brooklyn because i usually shop in another grocery store. and while on the phone they said they noticed some odd transactions. gee! you call me about the $5 grocery charge and not the 10k spent in 50 transactions. hello? wouldnt you think there is something fishy with that?

ALAN

I wonder about a Chase hack because last month someone, using my cc number and security code, charged several thousand dollars of internet charges to my Chase MileagePlus Explorer card while I was on vacation. I was contacted by Chase and I told them which charges were not mine; I never saw the charges on my account. Until the new card reached me, they gave me the option of continuing to use my physical card by swiping or chip reader, but not place internet or other charges without the physical card. That worked fine.

Chanie Levy

Was awkward but funny explaining to chase that 3 charges within 24 hours totaling $3,000 were mine ( Rockland Kosher, Evergreen, Hotlocho Supermarket before Pesach) while several small random charges weren’t ( $50 McDonalds, $25 Burger King, $8 Tacobell, all on Shabbos!) lol
