Q3 spending is valid from 7/1-9/30 for:

  • Gas stations: This includes most 7-Eleven stores and gas stations that sell gift cards for other stores as well. You can lookup how a store is categorized here.
  • Walgreens: This includes everything from prescriptions to gift cards for other stores.
  • Lyft: This is a weaker category for people that have a Sapphire Reserve card that always earns 3 points per dollar on all traveling and dining, which includes ride-sharing. Click Here to get more details on these cards and compare to other cards!

Tomorrow, you’ll be able to register for 2018 Q4 spending which will be valid 10/1-12/31 at:

Chase Freedom is an excellent no annual fee card thanks to its quarterly 5% categories. While they call it 5% cash back, you’ll really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be worth much more than 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending per quarter you will earn at least 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points over the course of a year (7,500 points per quarter at 5 points per dollar spent).

While Chase Freedom is a great card for the bonus categories, it’s not a great card for everyday spending. However the Chase Freedom Unlimited card also has no annual fee and is excellent for everyday spending thanks to 50% bonus points earned everywhere. Click Here to get more details on this card and compare to other cards!

Freedom or Freedom Unlimited alone can’t transfer points into much more lucrative airline or hotel miles, but if you or your spouse has a Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus, or Ink Preferred card then you can transfer points from Freedom to one of those cards and from there to your favorite travel currency. The Freedom or Freedom Unlimited card can also keep your points alive for free if you do close one of those premium cards.

The value of the points will be based on where you use them, but if you use those points for a trip worth where they are worth 2 cents each then you’ll have effectively earned 10% back on those “5 point categories.” The sky is the limit of the value of airline miles as they aren’t tied to the cost of a ticket. That’s good for people in the know and bad for those who are not. 1 mile can be worth 0.25 cents or it can be worth 25 cents, it all just depends on how you use them!

Where will you make your Q3 purchases?

When they had wholesale clubs in the past, has it worked for gas at the Costcos that have stations?

Why is 5% back at Lyft (with freedom) weaker than 3 points per dollar on sapphire Reserve?

Josh

Dan thanks for this. I recently read your post about the Chase Quadfecta and I want to learn more.

In this post you wrote; “The value of the points will be based on where you use them, but if you use those points for a trip worth where they are worth 2 cents each then you’ll have effectively earned 10% back on those “5 point categories.” The sky is the limit of the value of airline miles as they aren’t tied to the cost of a ticket. How can I learn how to use my points better? Do you have any posts, articles, videos or seminars about this?

Thanks in advance

I don’t understand. Suppose I sign up today…by the time I actually receive and can use the cc, the Q3 period will be over. So why the urgency to get the card now? By the time I get the card it will be close to 9/30 by the Q3 deadline. I would be able to use it for Q4 spending…but gas purchase won’t be included then.

If you’re approved, with the card number that they provide on the spot (most of the time or call them and ask for the numbers) and buy online at Walgreens a GC for example.

Wow, no amazon! You would think Chase would support amazon since they co-brand their card.

Myi

That’s what i buy in stores, meaning at shoprite pick up some amazon gcs, or some bestbuygcs.

Something to keep in mind is that you can now link Chase Pay and Samsung Pay. Not sure if this will post as Chase pay, but certainly worth a try. The payment starts in the Chase Pay app and brings up the Samsung Pay screen, with the ability to pay at virtually any terminal. There are both Samsung Pay and Chase Pay icons on the payment screen, so hopefully it tracks as Chase Pay too.
