In 2019 Citi removed most benefits from their consumer credit cards. That included car rental insurance, trip cancellation protection, Price Rewind, and more, though cards with an annual fee typically retained extended warranty coverage.

I got an email today saying that effective on 3/21, the following benefits are being removed from my CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum World Mastercard:

  • Extended Warranty, which doubles the original warranty up to 12 months
  • Purchase Assurance, which covers damaged or stolen items within 90 days of purchase
  • MasterCoverage, which protects companies from employee misuse of charge privileges.
  • MasterAssist, which offered travel and legal assistance.
  • Worldwide Travel Accident Insurance, which provides $1,000,000 in compensation for accidents while traveling.
  • Travel Services Medical Protection, which provides $2,500 in emergency medical coverage while traveling.
  • Mastercard Value Added Tax (VAT) Reclaim Service, which recovered VAT taxes paid in foreign countries while traveling.

The card retains MasterRental primary car rental insurance, but coverage now excludes off-road damage and theft of personal items is no longer primary.

Logging into my account online and going to card benefits also confirmed the changes.

The guide to benefits through 3/20 can be downloaded here.

The 3/21 guide to benefits can be downloaded here. Only car rental insurance and global card replacement were spared.

A prorated annual fee refund will be offered if you cancel your card by 7/1/21.

Did you get notified about benefits being removed from other Citi cards? Do you think that other banks will remove card benefits?

About the only other ‘perk’ now is free luggage. Are there cheaper/better AA cards to get that with?

I got a similar email for my no annual fee Citi ThankYou Business card. (My account had once been the AAdvantage, but I converted it years ago because I didn’t want an annual fee.)
