Signup offer and anniversary bonus:

For a limited time only, The Chase Southwest Plus and the Chase Southwest Premier card are both offering 60,000 points for spending $2,000 within 3 months. The Chase Southwest Premier Business card is offering 60,000 points for spending $3,000 within 3 months and is offered as an option at the bottom of the consumer Plus and Premier card applications.

You can view credit card offers by hovering over the “Credit Cards” tab. You can then click on “Credit Cards From All Banks“ to find card offers via the logo of the bank you’re looking for.

-The Plus card has a $69 annual fee and gives 3,000 points every card anniversary.

-The Premier cards have a $99 annual fee and give 6,000 points every card anniversary.

Southwest cards are subject to 5/24.

The value of Southwest points are variable based on the fare.

For example:

-A one-way Long Beach, CA-Las Vegas nonstop flight on 9/17 is $38.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 1,660 points plus $5.60 tax. So 1,660 points gets you a value of $33.38 ($38.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 2.01 cents (33.38/1,660) per point.

-A one-way LaGuardia-Chicago nonstop flight on 10/3 is $41.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 1,861 points plus $5.60 tax. So 1,861 points gets you a value of $36.38 ($41.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.95 cents (36.38/1,861) per point.

-A one-way Newark-Ft. Lauderdale nonstop flight on 10/3 is $49.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 2,397 points plus $5.60 tax. So 2,397 points gets you a value of $44.38 ($49.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.85 cents (44.38/2,397) per point.

-A one-way LaGuardia-Dallas nonstop flight on 9/26 is $55.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 2,799 points plus $5.60 tax. So 2,799 points gets you a value of $50.38 ($55.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.8 cents (50.38/2,799) per point.

-A one-way Cleveland-Las Vegas nonstop flight on 11/13 is $69.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 4,048 points plus $5.60 tax. So 4,048 points gets you a value of $64.38 ($69.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.59 cents (64.38/4,048) per point.

Free changes and cancellations. Lock in low fares with no penalty:

While other mileage currencies charge up to $200 to cancel an award ticket, Southwest continues to allow you to cancel an award flight and redeposit the points in your account for future use without any penalties.

Coupled with 2 free carry-ons and 2 free checked bags per person, that’s a lot of added value. A family of 4 needing to cancel award tickets on another airline would set you back $400-$800 versus it being a free change on Southwest. A family of 4 checking 2 bags each would run $480 round-trip on another airline versus paying nothing on Southwest.

Thinking of taking a trip but not 100% sure about it? With Southwest points you can lock in a good rate and just cancel the trip free of charge at any point before the flight if you can’t make it!

You can use the points for yourself or book award tickets for anyone else you want to give a ticket to.

Don’t fly?

You can also use 60,000 points to get $600 worth of gift cards to places like Alamo, Amazon, Avis, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Bloomingdales, Brooks Brothers, Budget, Carnival Cruises, Express, Fairmont, Gap, Hertz, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, National, Nike, Saks, Sea World, Shutterfly, Staples, Starbucks, Target, The Children’s Place, Toys R Us, TJMaxx, Walmart, Zappos and more.

Southwest allows you to redeem points for any seat on any flight. There are no blackout dates or capacity controls.

When Southwest has a fare sale the amount of points go on sale as well as it tracks to the price of the ticket. Best of all Southwest will refund your points if the price of your award ticket falls!  Just rebook your trip online for the same dates or give them a call for the credit.

You get 1 point per dollar on regular purchases and 2 points per dollar on Southwest purchases, including hotel and car rentals via Southwest.

Companion pass:

You can get a free companion pass if you earn 110,000 points in a year from select sources, including earnings from credit card signups and credit card spending! If you earn 110,000 Southwest points in 2017 the pass will be good until 12/31/18. The pass allows you to bring a companion with you for free whenever you fly Southwest, even if you are flying on a free ticket! There is no limit to the number of free companion flights that you can take.

If you open 2 Southwest cards and meet the spending bonus you will qualify for the companion pass.

Note that if you are gunning for Companion pass you may want to wait to apply for these cards until later this year, in order to earn the 60K bonus during 2018.

And as always, Southwest:
-Gives 2 free checked bags per passenger.
-Does not charge change fees to switch your flight. Whether you are on a paid or an award flight you can change without penalty!
-Does not charge a cancellation fee to cancel your flight (you will get Southwest credit for the full amount paid, even on non-refundable wanna get away fares) or to cancel and redeposit your award flight.
-Refunds the fare or point difference if the price of your flight goes down after you buy it, just call to get the credit at any time before your flight!

Even the business card version of the card is subject to the 5/24 rule?

H

Can these points be added to an existing southwest account? My account is about to expire unless I make a transaction:-/

iahphx

If Southwest reasonably serves your hometown and you often travel domestically with a companion (like your spouse), getting 2 of these cards and the companion pass is a great deal. But you should note that only a small percentage of your readers are eligible for this promo. Anyone who has more than 5 new credit cards in their name in 2 years will have their application denied by Chase. Unless you’re a newbie to the credit card game, that’s just about everyone reading this. If you are eligible, you should probably wait until January to get the cards as you’re companion pass will then be valid for almost 2 years. Take advantage of it because unless the Chase rules change or you get no other credit cards, you’re unlikely to ever get another Pass.

Jen

any way to know when this “limited time” offer expires?

Aaron Gregg

“Note that if you are gunning for Companion pass you may want to wait to apply for these cards until later this year, in order to earn the 50K bonus during 2018.” Can someone please explain this to me? How does waiting for 2018 give you 50K more points? Isn’t it a one time promotion for 60K and that’s it?

dave

Dan most of us not eligible due to 5/24 what a dreaded rule

Mendy Berkowitz

Can husband and wife combine points?

Avi

Does the business card monthly balances go on ones credit report?

Moish

no

Marc

How many points is it usually without the special and when is this special good until?

Yishai

Where do I apply?

Moish

Whats the question?

Avi

Anyone knows when this offer expires? When is the last day to apply with the 60k signup bonus?

Brian

So just to clarify i get the southwest plus and premier card, spend 2,000 on each and im all set?

joe

i only got 4 cards in 24. would i be able to do 2 cards together?

Moish

It should work. You may end up having to call reconsideration on one or both of them.

jsa

is it worth trying 3 cards at once?

Chaim

Am I eligible for this promotion, if i got SW cards several years ago? And they’re still open?

Moish

You would need to cancel them first.

Avid Reader

On what date in Late September/Early October will the 3 months period spill over into 2018?

Basically, right now the 3 months don’t extend long enough to earn the bonus as was alluded to in the article. When does that change?

Moish

Please see my comment above. Reports say anywhere from 103 to 115 days to meet spend . You can technically finish meeting the spend in December, as long as its after the December statement closing date, since it will then go on your January statement, which is where it has to be. So theoretically, you could apply today, and if your statement cut date is 9/10, then you can finish off the spend from 12/10 to 12/12 (assuming 103 days). Since I don’t think its going away that fast, applying next week should make things easier.

Avid Reader

Is there a it’s ir forum discussion explains how 3 months becomes 103-115 days (as opposed to 90-93 days)?

Or is there a shorter explanation?

On a recent card, I called chase cause I had lost track of the days. The rep told me that there’s always extra time. I don’t recall exactly, but it seemed more than 100 days. The 115 may be the due date of the third statement, which makes sense. You can always call to find out exactly. In addition, you can change the due date, which is usually a few days before the statement cut date.

Thanks

jsa

i only got 4 cards in 24months. would it be bad idea to do 3 cards at one time?

Moish

No, its not a bad idea if you’re doing 3BM. This assumes you have no problem meeting the spend. Just be prepared to call reconsideration

Adam

Last time they had the promo they also didn’t say when it would end, but around a couple of weeks into it they did advertise the end date. That’s of course pushes people to sign up sooner. I imagine this won’t be much different.

And seriously if you are over 5/24 and can’t apply for this card just move on.
Great info is being provided at no cost and it clearly states this is subject to that rule.
Why the negative comments, so if you can’t apply no one else should?

Mo

In regards to the companion pass. Do I need to book my ticket using points and only then will I get a free companion ticket? Or is it that if I book a ticket even without points?

Momo22

If I just applied for the United card how long after that do I need to wait in order to apply for the Southwest card I’m under the 5/24, is it 30 days ?

Jay

Even without

Coby

Where is the link to sign up?

H

How fast do the points add to an existing account. my balance will revert to zero in about a week.

Been There

Does the cardholder need to be the one flying to get the companion pass?

totty

Dan,
Where do you find such cheap Southwest tickets. When I go on Southwest.com, the tickets are many more points.

Ben

My wife got the SW Plus card in her name back when they offered the 60K points and she got the points in her RR account. Can I apply for the card in my name and use her RR# to get the companion pass?

N. F.

If I apply for all 3 Southwest cards through 3 browsers at once. is it considered only 1 for chase 5/24 rule?

Yossi

I haven’t seen anyone ask this directly yet, but I was just wondering if I can sign up for one card and my wife sign up for the other and if that would meet the threshold to get the companion pass. Or do one of us have to sign up for two cards by themself (I’d assume a Premier card and a Plus card) to get enough points to get the companion pass? Thanks in advance!

H

I have a chase freedom. does that work?

Moish

See above

Moish

Since you only have a week, I think the only way that will post in time would be to buy points from Southwest. I think the cheapest is $60. Not great but not terrible, but it depends on how many points you have there now.

totty

Dan –
Do you have a link I can use to get such cheap tickets. I couldn’t find flights for less than 3k points on Southwest.com.

-A one-way LaGuardia-Chicago nonstop flight on 10/3 is $41.98 with tax. It can also be bought for 1,861 points plus $5.60 tax. So 1,861 points gets you a value of $36.38 ($41.98 airfare less the $5.60 tax on the points ticket), imputing a value of 1.95 cents (36.38/1,861) per point.

yossi

can i purchase miles in order to fill the 110,000 quota?

Neil

no

Matlanta

Where can I find an article discussing the current methods of meeting spending thresholds? (I haven’t done this in a while -since bluebird and vanilla reload cards…).

Thanks!

Eli

How can I apply for cards business and personal?
Can I transfer points between spouses and still get companion pass?

ted

do i need to use 2 browsers to apply for these 2 cards?

Rochel

I applied just now and was approved for the main card on the spot but then I applied for the business card and it said they need time to review. Any thoughts? Could it be the 5/24 rule or because I applied the same day it wouldn’t matter. Any advice appreciated.

Moish

Rochel, I’d like to tell you more, but I first wanna check if you’re reading this. What’s your 5/24 status?

jojo

so if i want to lock in 60k and get companion i should open both cards now and spend it in 2018? ill get 60k for each card?

Dovid

Can I get The Chase Southwest Plus and the Chase Southwest Premier and get 120K and a companion pass?

HaHuGavrah

When I choose business it asks for my EIN#. How do I apply for the business card with my SS#?

howie

Called Chase who said you can only get one bonus in 24 months on any Southwest product, so opening 2 different cards won’t get you a companion pass (which I have had for 5 years).

Jesse

Where’d the link?

mo

Can someone hep me. I am a student and do not work. I want to sign up for both cards. On the application it gives a few options to choose for source of income. I am concerned that if i choose this option I will get denied for the card. Does anybody know what I should do? I can say that I work, but then I would need to provide employer information which I do not have.

sk

u mention that Chase gives 115 days for spending towards the bonus, isn’t it usually 3 months= 90 days?

Moish

Its usually 3 months, but since he mentions that its 115 days, that means that in this case its 115.

Bob

So if I apply today, October 3rd…do they count October 3 in the 3 months? If yes, then 90 days is December 31st but 3 months is January 3

I called them a few days ago and then girl gave me a true 3 months as the answer…when I called it was September 29th, she said December 29th…

Gotta get that CP for 18-19 so we can keep this travel streak going!

Moish

Seriously Bob? Did you read the post and the comment immediately above yours?

Totty

New question! If I need 4 tickets with companion pass, do I pay for 2 and get 2 or only 1 free ticket with cardholoders ticket?

Moish

1 free

Ch

Is this offer still valid?
Also, how much $ would I need to spend to earn a point? I am doing renovations now so I could put a nice amount of money on a credit card. I live in CA, so I could technically get the CA resident credit card, but I am not planning on traveling with my family too much in 2018. I would prefer to have until 2019.
