Virgin Australia Appears To Be Honoring Ticketed Australia Glitch Tickets, Cancelling Unticketed Reservations; Here’s Where You Should Credit Your Miles

Yesterday Virgin Australia had $148 tickets from Sydney to Los Angeles one-way or $251 round-trip and hundreds of DansDeals readers nabbed a great deal!

Most passengers received eTicket numbers and it appears that those tickets will be honored.

Some passengers who booked late or whose form of payment was rejected never received an eTicket number, and they have received cancellation notices.

Sydney to Los Angeles is 7,488 miles in distance one-way or 14,976 round-trip.

If you credit those miles to Air Berlin, Delta, Etihad, Hawaiian, Singapore, or Virgin Atlantic there’s a 50% cutback on this T class fare, so you’ll earn 3,744 miles one-way or 7,488 round-trip.

You probably shouldn’t do that.

If you have an Australian address you can enroll in Virgin Australia’s Velocity program. That program also has a 50% cutback on this fare, but if you’re flying between February 16-May 31 or July 18-September 16 you can enroll here for double miles! That means you’ll earn the full 7,488 miles one-way or 14,976 round-trip.

Virgin Australia also allows families to pool their miles together. Or you can transfer miles to family members.

Finally, they also allow you to convert miles to Singapore at a 1.35:1 ratio.

That means 14,976 Virgin miles will become 11,093 Singapore miles, which is better than crediting the flight to Singapore directly. Plus you can accumulate all of your family’s miles together into one Virgin or Singapore account!

Both Virgin Australia and Singapore have very strong points.

Virgin Australia allows you to book short-hauls on Delta for 6,900 miles one-way. Though you need to find Delta saver space to book those, which can be tricky.

Singapore allows you to book awards on United at a significant discount to what United charges to most destinations. Awards on United to places like Hawaii and Israel are a bargain when booked via Singapore.

However Singapore miles expire after 36 months and aren’t extended with activity, while Virgin Australia miles can be extended for another 36 months after account activity. Delta miles never expire.

If you do not have an Australian address, eliminating the possibility of getting a Velocity account, which airline would you recommend crediting this flight to? Or do you know of a way to enroll in Velocity without a valid Australian address?

Dan

Use your hotels address 😉

Scurry30

If I already credited my reservation to delta, is there a way of undoing it?

delta

Hey Dan,

1. If my flights are booked on virgin but they are putting me on delta’s metal. Will Virgin give me partner miles, or full miles.

2. If yes, if only one of the legs on my flight is between those dates you put above, will I get double miles for the whole trip or just that one leg?

A

How do you credit the miles at the airport or by calling virgin Australia? Some other method I am not familiar with Thanks so much for your help Dan! You are the greatest !

one leg

What if only one leg of my flight is in those dates? I’m I still eligible for the promotion ???

high end hobo

Do the names need to match when using VA for DL?

menachem

Hi. Trying to figure this out b4 the 11 deadline. tickets from jfk to lax return are showing up for $400-$500. Is that the cheapest fare? how much mileage would it cost?

Jack
Ed Travel

Do you know if the sale for $441 LAX to Australia still is alive?

YB

According to the Delta skymiles website, you get the full MQMs on a Virgin T fare. You also get a medallion bonus on the base miles (which is 50 percent of the miles flown).

For the outbound, you can fly delta/Virgin to several places in Australia for 45,000 from
Nyc. Bali is 40,000.

Hope this helps!

Dan do you know if these cheap tickets can be upgraded to business or first and what the best way to do it is?

Josh

Any chance you might actually give credit where credit’s due as to where you ‘discovered’ this deal?

Dan

@Scurry30:
Yes, call them.

@delta:
1. No difference.
2. Just that leg.

@A:
Calling or at airport.

@Josh:
A DDF member sent me a private message about a fare that he found. What would you like me to do exactly?

Curry30

This is what the delta rep estimated yesterday for me for the one way from Sydney To LA flight:

Delta flight: 3,744 miles
MQM: 7,487
MQDs: 749

I’ll try switching if the miles at Singapore are more valuable. Thanks Dan!

Dan

@Curry30:
I value Singapore miles much more than Delta miles.

Curry30

Great thanks so much Dan! Any recommendations on points or miles to get to Australia? Also can you typically transfer miles once they’ve been added. For example, can I transfer the miles I currently have with delta to a partner airline?

Mordey

What are the best/cheapest miles to use to book one way from CA to Melbourne?
Thanks Dan for this incredible deal.

oz

To get the Virgin Australia double points promo, the account needed to be registered before the ticket was purchased.

Dan

@Curry30:
Depends on what miles you have.
You can’ transfer Delta points anywhere.

@Mordey:
AA charges 37.5K.

@oz:
Source?

Carly

This is awesome news! 🙂 Thanks Dan for always being a great source for deals!

Mitch

Anyone know if they can be upgraded?

Shmuel

How can I claim the miles if I didn’t input any rewards number when I booked the tickets?

Dan

@Shmuel:
Call.

Shmuel

@Dan

Call Orbitz, I presume? And if I don’t want to deal with the hassle of making a Virgin Australia account, I can give them my Delta SkyMiles (I don’t have any of the others) number and get 7488 Delta miles (which is still better than nothing), correct?

Josh

@Dan: And what did that message contain? That is, where did the member direct you to in order to find information on the fare?

Dan

@Shmuel:
Call orbitz or Virgin Australia.
Personally I’d go for the Singapore option, but Delta is fine.

@Josh:
It said that he came across an amazing fare while searching on Google Flights after selecting the date and selecting a Virgin flight.

I tried the date on Orbitz and the price fell there too after picking a Virign flight.

So I searched every single date of the year on Google Flights and selected Virgin and compiled the list of every valid date where the price dropped. I don’t know of any other site that did that kind of research, it was 100% original.

Curry30

Hey Dan. I have United, Delta, and Chase UR points. Not sure what is even considered a good mileage value for this type of flight honestly.

So is delta the Only one that can’t? Can united?

Thanks again

T

You’re da man Dan- I wouldn’t of ever heard of such a deal if you didn’t pass it on- I appreciate your efforts and even if the OZ FF group figured it out too- no matter- the flyertalk can walk da walk- just please don’t have too many people calling in and asking questions now re. FF mile credits and still flummoxing the whole deal-

Thankful

Dan, Thanks! Got tickets $552 return from lax to sydney for my family.
Any tips on how to get from ny to lax and back? purchase or mileage and if mileage, which one? Also trying to figure out how to make it a smooth transfer? like which airline etc. (no one that’s flying direct on such a flight wants to have a long stop over..)
I’m sure many that purchased return like this are trying to figure out the same. Your knowledgeable advice & experience would be greatly appreciated!:)

Martinn

I’m actually a shareholder of VA and so I guess my dividend is even further into the distant future. What a bummer.

LS

Dan, I did not get a seat assigned. I am not sure if I should call the airline, but I would really like to know if they are going to honor E tickets. Suggestions…

Kbzsk

Dan, have the same issue as LS above. Have seats assigned on the more expensive leg LAX-SYD ($443) but not on the SYD-LAX ($148). VA online system says it can’t book seats on this flight. Don’t want to call and them cancel the flight but also don’t want to book a Sydney hotel, yet, in case it does get canceled. Advice? Thank you!

Dan

@Kbzsk:
It’s fine, call.

Kbzsk

Thanks, Dan . Appreciate you very much. Also, a quick comment about the occasional negative person on your threads…as you know, some people are very unhappy with themselves and it has nothing to do with you. Thanks for doing what you do! Your are thorough & responsive. And, you help us to save money. Thank you!! Plus, it’s fun/exciting getting some of these deals *smile*
