El Al has “Lite” fares available from Tel Aviv to Beijing for just $399 round-trip. Lite fares don’t come with free checked bags or seat assignments, but they do come with free carry-on bags.

Upgrading to a “Classic” fare with 1 free checked bag and an assigned seat costs an additional $165 each way, but you can purchase a checked bag online or by calling El Al for $80 each way after ticketing. You can also purchase assigned seats for $25 each way after ticketing or you can get seats assigned for free at checkin.

You can credit this U class fare to Qantas and earn 4,200 miles round-trip.

Am I misunderstanding the first paragraph? It says that “lite” fairs are $399 r/t and classic is $165 each way. If that’s the case, The classic would be cheaper than purchasing a “lite” fare.

Or is it that the upgrade fee is an additional $165?
