Air Canada didn’t collect the fuel surcharge on most of their international flights this morning, making for some incredible bargains in coach and business class to destinations across the globe as I covered in these four posts. The glitch lasted over 4 hours from when I first posted the deal, a surprisingly long amount of time for these types of deals.
Based on past experience, the odds are pretty good that the tickets will be honored. A similar glitch happened with Air Canada a couple of years ago that was honored.
While the DoT no longer requires airlines to honor price mistakes, they do require the airline to pay for any non-refundable incidentals that people book under the assumption that they had a valid ticket, if they decide not to honor the tickets.
We should know within a couple of days if these tickets will be honored.
Now I’m not your Rabbi, Priest, or ethicist. If you are uncomfortable with a price mistake, then don’t do it. Or ask someone who is one. I wrote about some of the halachic (Jewish law) implications of airfare mistakes for the Yated a couple of years ago here.
There are methods of forcing tickets to price without a fuel surcharge (called fuel dumping), but every now and then the airlines do it to themselves, which makes life far easier:
- El Al did it in 2012 with $336 tickets to Israel.
- USAir flights from NYC to Tel Aviv were $461 without a fuel surcharge in 2013 and they were as low as $347 from other cities.
- Iberia did it with $398 tickets to Tel Aviv in 2015.
- Etihad had tickets valid to all corners of the globe from $187 when they dropped their fuel surcharge.
- Delta even allowed people to change to nonstop flights for free after their fuel surcharge glitch to Israel.
- Air Canada did it in 2015.
- Emirates had $100 tickets from the Maldives a few months ago.
- Though it wasn’t a fuel surcharge mistake that caused Delta to offer first class tickets to anywhere in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii) for $50 round-trip…
Not that it’s always obvious as to what’s a mistake. United flights to Tel Aviv were $287 without a fuel surcharge in 2013 , though it turned out that Widerøe, a Norwegian airline, actually intentionally leaked that deal online so that they would get the commissions for selling the tickets.
One common question that kept coming up was about adding an infant lap child. For the life of me, I can’t understand why you wouldn’t just book a seat for your child, especially where there are airfares such as $200 to China, Europe, or Israel. Having a seat means you can bring a carseat onboard for your child to sleep in, which is safer and means a load off of your hands. Plus a lap child still costs money, but you don’t get anything for it!

Dan clearly posts in about 650 of his posts that the emails are just a summary of the day before deals, so instead of writing SCAM SCAM SCAM it would make much more sense to just follow him on Twitter and get live updates.
Dan has said numerous times that the only way to be notified immediately is to sign up for Twitter alerts. The emails are only sent out at the end of the day with a summary of all the days posts. I’m not sure where your animosity is coming from, there’s a link on the bottom of most posts with directions on how to sign up for Twitter alerts.

I think they were more because we had to hire a company on our behalf to submit the visa in person on our behalf to the Chinese embassy. At that time at least you could not apply by mail. Our plane tickets were around $150 and I believe the cost to get the visas was over $200.

Actually, the kids’ tickets were cheaper than the adult ones–the average price was $264CDN. Spoke to AC and the agent said that the phones were ringing off their hooks in the a.m., and that the powers above say that they will honour the tickets, and that it was NOT done on purpose.

Point of departure . Was hoping to be able to pick up our bags and book our own flight to CLE- is this doable?
You would have to go over to the service counter when you land in yyz, and see if they are able to take the bags off…ime ymmv…but do you really want to risk it is the q?
On the other hand I’ve never flown to yyz, and apparently you would have to go through customs, probably if there’s such a long layover…so while usually for a short stopover, they’d transfer bags to next plane, it could be very likely that you’d be able to even required to move your luggage yourselves. I think you could make the argument that you may need something in the bag that’s checked in. Best of luck, although I’m not sure if that flight would get reimbursed if the flights were to be cancelled (after all your expected to finish a flight)
I am reading conflicting information as to whether I will have to claim bags in Toronto when connecting to a flight to US. In 2013 I do not believe we did although we did have to go through security

In Toronto you usually need to pick up your bags before going through customs to the US. Either way, if you tell them by check in that you don’t want to check your bags all the way thru cuz it’s a long stopover, they should accommodate. El Al did that for me once. Worst case is that they’ll tell you that they will charge to check it in again for the second leg
You have no choice and must claim your bags in yyz if you are switching planes for a flight from canada to the USA. There is a passage which allows you to skip Canadian customs if you are connecting to the us. You then must clear us customs for your connecting flight to the us.
Once you pick up your bags (there are free luggage trolleys in Yyz) simply fill out a CANADIAN customs form hand it to the Canadian customs officer and exit to the arrivals area with all yyz arriving passengers.
Then head upstairs to departures and check in for your flight to CLE and clear us customs.
According to the Air Canada website we do not claim our bags.

There are obvious reasons the site is set up the way it is. Nothing in life is free.
3 adults and 1 lap infant $777.61 for Dec 5th-Dec 12th Baltimore. Could not book the 6 month old baby in his own seat with his own ticket with Priceline’s options and had to call Air Canada to add him to my lap after I booked the three adult seats.
Next time just book the infant as an adult. The date of birth on a ticket is meaningless.
I got BWI-JNB for $290 in February. I was trying to price it to Cape Town but couldn’t get it to work — although it seems like somebody did get a cheapo fare to CPT. But this was one of those circumstances where booking fast was probably better than searching for exactly what you wanted.
I was looking for cheap TLV fares when the party ended. I see somebody got BWI-TLV for $233. Wow! Was that only one stop in Toronto? I was searching for TLV from the Mid-Atlantic when the party ended at 10:55, but I couldn’t find anything sub $400 for Autumn.

I ticket ewr-tlv for Purim 347$ before purchasing seats. Only I do have the say that although I have followed Dans deals on Twitter and I am signed up for text alerts, they usually hot my phone too late to take advantage of. I only got this deal and just barely because Friend forwarded it to me. By the time I got a message from Dans deals, the deal was already dead.

I have heard first hand from someone was trying to fly wasn’t aware of it and was denied boarding and lost the full entire trip just for transit via CANADA.

Might not sound as amazing as others. Paid $770 for my son to go to yeshiva. Had close to no flexibility with dates. The same flights are pricing almost double now. Any other alternative with a connection somewhere in Europe (maybe with the exception of Ukraine) is more expensive. I consider this an excellent deal.

I wanted to book EWR-TLV for a fam wedding in Nov via Amex plat pay with points cus I’m still grandfathered in on the 50% refund. All AC didn’t process. So I searched mutil city with a rerun to BOS. The last leg (which I won’t use) EWR-BOS was on united (which is my selected airline) and it priced a little higher @ $521. I booked 2 tickets at less then 54k (after 50% refund…) total for 2 RT tickets! I’m pumped!

You generally have the best chance at having error fares honored when booking directly with airline. A tiny OTA with nobody to talk to is a DOA ticket.
I learned my lesson. Best is to use air canada for such a deal. Did others use priceline, oribitz or air canada?

Booked from Europe (DUS) to SFO for April/May with lastminute.com at around 8 AM ET (2 PM in Germany). Paid with AMEX. Confirmed booking with PNR code. Just checked on the AirCanada website to find that the booking is canceled (no message from the OTA). So check online to see if your flight is still confirmed, otherwise having the PNR and eTix number may not guarantee that you will be flying.

I live in Germany and saw the deal before I spotted it here. My German AMEX platinum CC doesn’t work on Priceline and I wanted to use that card for the insurance. Expedia was showing prices of almost 150 Euros more. AirCanada also. Next time I’ll use one of my US cards! You win some, you lose some!

Bought tickets Israel-NY (thank you Dan!) but in the rush to get the deal accidentally entered in my wife with her maiden name. She is Israeli, the main passport page has her maiden name and a sticker the Misrad Hapnim put in the passport has her married name. Are we ok? I am wary of calling Air Canada about this, in case they use it as an excuse to cancel the ticket.

I booked 2 tickets NYC TLV for Jan. 347.80 per ticket. I wanted to book for 2 additional people but the prices had gone up on priceline to $600 per ticket. I was able to book 2 tickets on Air Canada’s website for the same price of 347.80 per ticket.
Can you choose a seat without a fee when you check in online 24hrs in advance?

Question: My tickets are from Montreal to TLV with a stopover in Brussels where Brussels airlines takes over – as per the Brussels airlines website, there is a fee for checked bags while on Air Canada there is not, does anyone if we will be required to pay that fee when transferring?

I purchased a ticket through Orbitz LGA-YYZ-TLV. I realized afterward that it would be preferable for me to fly directly from YYZ to TLV without starting out from LGA. Is there any way to change that without beiing charged?
Also, will I be given my luggage in YYZ when I return or will it be transferred straight to LGA.
curious about the East Coast to South Africa tickets. It looks like they all go through Canada? 30 hours to JNB and 35 hours to CPT? WOW Anyone ever flown that long in economy and lived to tell the tale?
I purchased R/T BOS to JNB. Yes, it’s a long trip, but my kids have never been to London so we will enjoy the 9+ hr layover and show them a few of the sights and whet their appetite for the next time. The return is thru Frankfurt and the connections are much tighter. The connections in Toronto (going) and Montreal (returning) are reasonable…and the Priority Pass membership that came with CSR card is a big help.

Booked NYC-TLV around Presidents Day weekend.
Wanted to use Chase UR points from my CSR card but the Chase portal was down all morning. Now trying to get reimbursed from Chase with points (at CSR 1.5 not standard 1.0). It’s a difference of around 16,000 points.
Does anyone have experience getting Chase to reimburse because the portal was down, either positive or negative?

Of course airline tickets have no set value to say that above a specific point it’s a correct price and below this point it’s a mistake fare. They will intentionally sell the same ticket to someone for $100 and to someone for $2000, one day for $1500 and the next day for $500. Their pricing is just a scam, it’s not based on anything real, so they are solely responsible for the fare they provide at any given moment. Just grab the tickets you can buy for $1 the same way you’ll buy a last minute ticket for $10,000.
