Chabad of Cancun makes delicious catered food for weekdays and Shabbos meals and there are more than a dozen kosher restaurants in greater Cancun, read more information on this DDF Wiki and Thread. I reviewed several restaurants and activities in my 2015 Cancun/Riviera Maya trip notes here.

just came back from cancun, the locals there are too much. wouldn’t go back, not as relaxing as you think and we even stayed at the Westin Lagunamar..

igal

what do you mean by to much I just booked it? should I be concerned ?

Israeli

What do u mean too much?

bbg

I’m curious too about your experience, particularly at the Lugunamar. Can you elaborate?

Thanks Daniel.

hey all –

The Westin Lagunamar was a great resort – scored a 1 bedroom villa for $145 a night with SPG’s BRG program. If you stay poolside, you won’t have issues, however, the beach is a different story. You have locals on the beach all day trying to sell you on massages, jewelry, cigars, hats, you name it. Never take a taxi there, take the bus (surprisingly it’s safer) and the taxi’s are very expensive – bus is like 75 cents a person. There are a handful of restaurants that are good, not many – most are 10 minutes from the Westin. Cancun is very commercial/touristy, so I would avoid going downtown by the bars – we got heckled as soon as we got off the bus by a ticket salesman which ended up following us until my wife put her bag in his face to make him go away.

Overall we had a good time, but like i said, it was a bit much as we were saying ‘no gracias’ majority of our day to the locals as they just try and sell sell sell.

Also, the weather can be a bit unpredictable – out of the 6 days (went December 19-25) 2 were really nice, 1 day rained 80% of the day, and the 3 other days were mostly cloudy with a low UV index – so it’s definitely a hit or miss with the weather. Comparing to Aruba, Aruba is a bit more humid and has ‘tropical rain’ which can last 10-15 minutes, Cancun rain can last for hours.

PSA there is still ZIKA VIRUS in Cancun

Mike

How serious is the situation there? Or is the CDC just marking to have themselves covered by always having a warning out about it ? The CDC has a warning for the entire South America and Africa.

These prices are one way. You can get with JetBlue rewards, 5400 + about $30 taxes per way. Pretty good deal too.

we stayed in the Hyatt Ziva . was beautiful !! we loved every minute we were there.

Dan wI booked these for march 6 to 13 yesterday if you get a chance can you advise on a decent hotel that’s not crazy priced up to 175 I am ok with.
I am in the middle of readin your reports now and I am loving it.

EZ

igal, I have just the place for YOU! Consider the Macarena Hostel, Cancun. It is only $8 USD per night, and even includes breakfast! You’ll be sharing a room, but the beach is only blocks away. Enjoy!~~

Igal

Looks like you have experience there I think I will wait for a better offer. $175 a night is a decent amount to pay given others booking for 124$ vilas

@daniels You seem to be describing a “normal” popular tourist destination. Travel a bit more and you will see.

Aveno

There has been a spike in crime rates over the last year or two. The US gov may not recommend travel there. You can check. However, if you choose to go, staying in the hotel zone should be the safest bet. Chabad Shabbos is incredible there if you can make it. Lastly, you can stick with resort-based activities if you want to play it safe.
