Update: Price drop to $845.97 via this method.

——————————————————————-

There are currently flights from Chicago, Houston, or Washington DC to Tel Aviv from November-March for under $650 on United and other airlines.

If you’re creative though you can manufacture a cheaper ticket, though the airlines may not like it and they may punish people who abuse hidden city ticketing repeatedly, so don’t do this every month.

You can use the Travelocity multi-destination search page and search for NYC-TLV in flight #1 (sample date 01/21/14) and then TLV-IAH, TLV-ORD, or TLV-WAS (sample date 01/28/14).

You can choose a nonstop on United from Newark to Tel Aviv. For the return  you can select a United flight from Tel Aviv to Chicago, Houston, or Washington DC that connects in Newark. Your bags will be tagged to Chicago, Houston, or Washington DC but everyone, whether their destination is NYC or anywhere else in the world, must pickup their luggage in Newark on the return and bring it through customs. At that point you can either recheck your bags or just leave the airport.

In the red square is a flight that nobody is going to force you to board.

The price using this “hack” is $845.97, more than $200 off the regular nonstop fare. Now the price for Chicago, Houston, or Washington DC to Tel Aviv via NYC is another $210 less than that, but this allows you to fly nonstop both ways and realize part of that fare differential without flying to another city to start the trip.

Of course you can always just fly to DC for 4,500 Avios or Chicago for 7,500 Avios to save yourself another $210 per person.

Or you can just go to Chicago, enjoy a fantastic dinner at Shallot’s Bistro or Milt’s BBQ and then use 7,500 Avios to fly back to NYC.

Of course this will work for dozens of other dates as well. The key to finding valid dates is searching for cheap flights from Chicago, Houston, or Washington DC to Tel Aviv with flexible dates. The outbound flight date doesn’t need to be cheap but the return flight date does need to be on a cheap date. Once you find a cheap return date just use the Travelocity multi-destination search and plugin any outbound date and any of the cheap return dates to Chicago or Houston. Read about using ITA Software here and use the following advanced routing code to limit the calendar search to United flights that connect in Newark: UA, UA

Any luck with end of December dates?
I used ITA to look for DC-TLV direct flights and the only times I seem to find the tickets in 600’s is Jan
Hoping to find super cheap for end of December – any suggestions?

Thanks!

(ps if it helps, I also have around 50k in chase sapphire miles)

How can I to that kind of hack for a flight to kiav Ukraine from NYC THANKS Dan just came back from Israel paid $623 for the flight with Delta direct

tamara

can this be used from tlv-newark instead?

Noam

could this work the other way around, for a TLV to NYC roundtrip too?

Nomi

did it several months ago, and included 2 unused portion of ticket, which, If reimbursed, would enable me another R/T between NY and ORD.

Would it be a prob to write to airline and ask for credit for unused tickets? would it trigger future problems?

How likely to be approved? several fam members on same unused NYC-ORD RT. (on 2 sep itinararies)

Thank you Dan

1. How can any airline “punish” anyone? Do they spank you? And how will they even know that the David Cohen who flew today is the same David Cohen who will be flying a month from now? Many names are quite common!

2. What is “hidden city ticketing”?

texas123

Hi Dan, does this work for the dates of Jan 7- Jan 20?

And do you think there will be anything for the Yamim Noraim this year?

Thanking you in advance

shak

Do i have to book through travelocity? Or can I find the flight I want and then book through United.com? thx

Gabriel

Hey Dan, any thoughts about tickets from Chicago to TLV for late October, Sat night to Monday AM (~8 days)? I’m seeing $950ish, not sure if I can hope for lower. THanks!

Pieter

Dan, thanks for providing gr8 info. I am in the process of booking a flgt. to Israel.

I like to do a stopover in Paris. I have arranged it so that I leave NY via Paris and return to DC which is ok bec. i have relative in DC to visit.

However, the time between flights on the return is minimal about 2.5 hours. But they have a later evening flgt. i would want.

But on travelocity it only offers the immediate connection.

is there any way that you can induce the later flight on the final leg?

M. Josef

Hi Dan – How do you fly from New York to Chicago with 7,500 Avios Points ? BA on their Web site says “error”‘ we don’t have traveling rights between these two cities.
If anyone can help me with this, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Sara

Why is this “current” the dates there are for the winter, theres nothing close to 845 now. I searched this way and the lowest was about 1750, am i missing something or is the june 5 date on here deceptive?

yidel

I’m looking to book for august 7-14 is there anything available for this ?

Thanks dan

Pieter

sara, what dates do you want to travel? Summer is highest prices. But you can take the multiple city option and see.

dov lebovic

Dan. i have to make a $30,000 purchase. i am thinking of putting it on the BA cc to get the companion voucher. however with taxes charged on both tickets i am not sure of the value of such a voucher. what are your thoughts?
thx

bal habus

@M. Josef: Try calling.
I had the same issue with Spg hotels- website only gave me 1 hotel room, over the phone they gave me all options.

rb

@Sara:
CALL British Airways

Chuck Lowenstein

Dan: Take the leg to Chicago, but, forget about Shallots and Milt’s. Take an empty suitcase to Romanian Kosher and bring back enough hot dogs and salamis for pay for the trip.

Walter

If you live in NJ, are doing the Chicago trip, and are not parking at the airport, check out Frontier Air from Trenton to Chicago, have a meal, then get on UA for the trip to TLV. Good flight and great fares.

@dov lebovic-you can also go to your travel agent and purchase an MCO for $30,000 [be prepared with great photo ID’s like license AND passport]. Can be on any airline not just BA to get your companion deal [but not sure]. Then you can use it towards purchasing any tickets in the future.
@Yeruchem-they can eliminate your frequent flyer miles and close your account first off, they have tons of overpaid lawyers that can take you to court if the difference is large enough, and can ban you from flying.
@Yeruchem-hidden city ticketing is putting two tickets together via a connecting city to get a lower fare. Beyond city is getting off the plane in the connecting city where the fare is higher than where the ticket says you are going.

tq

Quite mind boggling that people here are so selfish or idiotic (probably both) that they think dan is a travel agent and is going to bother to do basic specific searches for them.

moraht

Is there a way to do this from Cleveland?

Gary

“The outbound flight date doesn’t need to be cheap but the return flight date does need to be on a cheap date”.

Can you clarify this Dan? The price that ITA shows in the search doesn’t seem to indicate the price per leg when looking at the calendar.

Pieter

tq, I just signed up for a credit card fro this site. I hope people are doing likewise.

Ya

@M. Josef: You need to click on Executive club> Spending avios > Book flight with Avios, you will then have the option to book a flight using avios on American airlines.

Chaim

Did I miss something? Can I schedule the flight originating from a different city and stopping over in Newark on the way to Israel as with the return flight? In other words, will they realize that I wasn’t on the flight from that city to EWR?

solmeir

@dov lebovic:
It would be good for air berlin which doesn”t charge heavy tax to israel

Wondering

Why aren’t there any cheap flights to the UK, it always seems to be Israel…

Pieter

Wondering, check air icelandic. they are running about 650 to Amsterdam, which is 30% + off the base price

@bal habus: Thanx!

Hi

I can’t find the $845.97 flights on Travelocity or ITA software either!

Jack Naylor

Awesome tip, thanks, you just saved me like $300, Good times Google! Does anyone know if you can combine these “specials” with other discount codes?

clcm

@tq: if u noticed, Dan doesn’t answer all those questions that shouldn’t b asked.

Joel

Can you start publishing business fares and fares to other place in Eorope?

ab

we need good fares to Europe!

ezra rishono

HELP!!!! I’m trying to book tickets and have no clue whatsoever how to do it!! So confusing for me !!
Can some one out there guide the “DUMMY ” ?

Thanks so much

Pieter

@Ezra, what have you done so far, it’s not that difficult.

1. go on travelocity
2. select flights section
3. click on multiple destinations, its a small tab under the flight screen.
4. then you fill out your outbound for example
JFK to Tel aviv your date.
your return, Tel Aviv to Chicago, date
5. they show all the flight offers according to price.

david

what about flying from FLL or MIA to Tel Aviv in the last week of this month (June), and coming back a week later. The fares are all over $2,000 round trip. thx

Yeruchem

“@Yeruchem-they can eliminate your frequent flyer miles and close your account first off, they have tons of overpaid lawyers that can take you to court if the difference is large enough, and can ban you from flying.”

Walter:

The only risk is loss of miles? How great is the risk of that occurring?

How can they ban anyone with a common name (unless he flies under a frequent flier account)? The next time he flies how will the airline know he is the same David Cohen as last time (if he doesn’t use the same frequent flier account)?

yanky

hi den I have a sapphire card and a chase united if I m calling in to get more credit on both on the same DAY WIL IT B 2 PULLS ON MY CREDIT REPORT ?
THANKS

ezra rishono

@pieter Thanks for your help, I did as you said but the price is over 1,000 What happened to the low fair of 600?

ezra rishono

@pieter i meant the low fair of $849 I dont seem to find Thanks

pieter

@Ezra, what are you dates? I think the low fare of 650 become 850 in the past 2 weeks. BUt that is lower than 1040-1140

ezra rishono

@pieter 850 is also fine my dates are jan 11- jan 18

Thanks so much

Pieter

Ezra, there are no directs coming up for those dates, using DC as the return. Try other cities. u have 860 with a stopover but then you might want to take Turkish air regular i think they are about 750.

to ezra

vat is your email? maybe i can help u.

Sara

Pieter,
I searched travelocity as instructed and lowest fare was about 1750 for this month. If it’s actually possible to get an 845 far, I would love if someone would explain how because I am not finding anything near that.

E

sara, 850 is not for summer. its for low season, which is winter rate. summers are expensive.
