Click on United and you’ll see this flight option.  The outbound flight is a nonstop flight from Newark to Tel Aviv. The return flight is from Tel Aviv to Boston but it connects in Newark.  Bags will be tagged to Boston, but everyone must pickup their luggage in Newark.  At that point by law you have to bring your bags past customs yourself and can recheck your bags to Boston or you can just leave the airport:

Want to fly Delta from JFK?  Click on Delta, scroll down to the $776 flights, and locate the flight option that goes nonstop from JFK on the outbound and returns to Boston via JFK.  Same story, everyone must pickup their bags in JFK:

This is called hidden city ticketing, and of course the airlines don’t love that.  And airline reps will probably lie to you and say that your bags will go straight to Boston even though they will not.  They will be tagged to Boston, but everyone has to pick them up in Newark or JFK.

They can decide not to give miles for your trip, though only USAirways has actually followed through with that threat.  I don’t suggest anyone do this every month, but tons of people save money by buying tickets with hidden city ticketing every day without problems.

The reason this works is because you’re effectively paying the higher nonstop fare from NYC to Tel Aviv, but you take advantage of part of the current dirt cheap fares on Delta and United to Boston.

For the most part, the same dates that work for Delta and United from Boston to Tel Aviv will work for this trick. So just try a sample date that works for United or Delta there and just search using the NYC-TLV-BOS format as shown above.

The following sample dates work for both Delta and United:
-01/21-01/28
-02/03-02/10
-02/10-02/17
-02/17-02/24

You can read this post for more on how to utilize hidden city ticketing.

Are any of these options upgradeable?

shmulie

Is there anything near Lag BaOmer

BoroPark Boy

Thanks Dan for posting,these dates are great for the bobover rebbi big nesia in February.

sam

Anything for next weekend, like 11/19-11/24?

Dan

@Cheryl Schreiber:
Sure, but it will cost a fortune.

@shmulie:
No.

@BoroPark Boy:
YW!

@sam:
As you can see from the Boston post, you can fly on United from 11/17 or 11/18 to 11/24.
Should be $738 nonstop with the hack.

eli

bookable on united as well…….

Dan

@eli:
Better cancellation policy on PL. No advantage to booking direct.

sam

@dan Thanks so much for assistance. I can’t seem to find non-stop to Israel, all seem to be 1 stop for next weekend

sam

Anything to LHR ?

Yo

@Cheryl Schreiber: 1200 in W class in UA. Anyway if you have GPYs SWUs etc. to upgrade then you fly enough to know the answer to your own question.

James

Dan, I need to go from jan21-31 anyway to do that?

ssheej

Hey Dan I just got those tickets on Delta for those dates from NYC for 859 and now with your hack i could have gotten them 80 dollars cheaper….. is there anyway for me to get the deal if I already bought tickets? I am not a frequent flier at all and don’t know much about airline reservations…

Moshe

02/01-02/09

Dan

@sam:
Then you aren’t following the directions on the post.

@James:
Look at the Boston post for dates.

@ssheej:
Unless you bought the tickets yesterday or today there’s nothing to do.

Buki

How many chase points will i need to upgrade?

Anonymous

@ssheej: if you booked within 24 hrs most airlines and travel agencies will refund.

ssheej

unfortunately it was three days ago. thanks for the help guys

shlomo

wow dan this is great for bobover maga nesyah tnx a bill

asher

Can I buy these flight with my sapphire preffered miles

Dan4President

Mr. President:

If one needs to change the rerun date after purchase, what are change fees on Delta? United?

Did i understand correctly that PL has better cancelation policy than booking direct? what exactly is it?

DZ The Telzer

Thanks Dan,
I booked this flight right when I saw it available at 11:30, The cancelation policy allowed me to cancel it till 11:29 PM Friday 11/14/14. After midnight I checked and the same flight was available at the same price so I cancelled my reservation and rebooked it, and now I have till Monday 11/17/14 at 11:29 to cancel.

Dan4President

Can someone here please assuage my conscience here from a torah halachic perspective. I just bought a ticket and this would save me at least $200. I just want to sleep guilt free knowing that this is indeed kosher.

Thanks,

D4P

Rochel

I just booked on Orbitz, an el al ticket with the multi city search and got a pretty good deal for the end of December. I did not add my lap child, when I called el al to find out the price to add the lap child they said their price is $115, but I have to book it through orbitz, when I check the cost on Orbitz adult ticket with lap child it comes out $300 more then I paid. How can this be done, if I have to pay $300 for the lap child, this is no longer a good deal and I may need to cancel it tomorrow.

Lisa

What about the other way?

Bargain_Yid

Can I use this from Tel Aviv to New York as well? If yes, how?

Thanks in advance.

Apple

Dan or anyone.

Off topic but what are the best SIM card deals for Israel and US calls. Right now we use talk save. Thanks

Will

@Dan4President

I can’t speak to the halacha, but think of this as prepaying a 3 course meal where you politely decline the third course.

Zow

@Dan4President:
I would suggest asking your LOR or equivalent, but from my perspective, if the airlines are going to institute draconian policies to maximize their profits at the expense of consumers, then consumers should feel empowered to find loopholes in those policies, as long as the loopholes are neither immoral nor illegal.

gh

All this hacking is great except if there are major weather conditions in New York and you get diverted to Chicago ( let’s say ) there is no obligation on the airline to fly u to New York but will go straight to Boston.

Dan

@gh:
They don’t just divert 777s from TLV to NYC to Chicago. That’s probably happened a total of 0 times.

I know once a United 777 from TLV to NYC was diverted to CLE, but they brought that whole plane with the passengers back to NYC as soon as they could. That plane already has another place to go to from NYC.

Either way you can insist to go back to your connecting point. Had to meet someone there and that’s why you booked it that way, etc.

Anonymous

@Rochel:

any advice from the pros on this?

Dan

@Anonymous:
How much more is Delta or United?

Rina

Any chance of there being deals for Pesach dates? It didn’t seem to work for that

Michael Rosenfeld

If i plan on returning from Israel at the end of the summer or possibly even NEXT jan. What type of charge would there be for pushing off the ticket?

Michael Rosenfeld

I mean pushing off the return ticket (I’d be going to Israel in Jan 2015, but returning Sept ’15 or Jan’16)

shlomo

it seems like priceline is not showing anymore flights with the stop in nyc im only getting results with stops in FRA

JOEB1

DEAD ON DELTA

chossid

this deal can go through united direct, don’t have to do through priceline

Dan, is there any reason i should cancel via priceline and re-book through united?

dave

is there a way (through hidden ticket) to also make a stop in Europe? If yes how (on ita when I put something else next to connection in nyc, ex fra,nyc, it shows me either-or not both)

david

Anything available for Chanukah? Dec 17-24

Boaz

I’ll need to travel closer to summer school break 2015, hopefully there’ll be good deals then

HolyNyc

@yo the w fare will be costlier to Boston than to NYC the fare on sale is K fare so if you’re goin for an upgrade you might as well book as a mentch

zeena fruchter

didnt see any answer to the question of whether or not you can do this starting in tel aviv. is it possible to do this if you start out in israel and return to israel? or is it just for people coming from america to israel?

Sophia Charney

Idan

Thank you! Any hacks/deals for the start of passover?, nothing like a seder in Israel (3/27- 4/5).

Sam

Anyway to book Boston to TLV and only catch flight at Newark? I know it’s almost a certain no but can’t believe the same dates in Feb are $573 BOS-TLV with stopover in EWR vs your idea which is $738? Why would airlines price so low from BOS?

Avigail

Tried this for the dates 12/23-12/30 and cheapest I got is $1388. Does this only work starting
in January ?

mazal

hi need a flight. 2 tickets round trip, non-stop. for January 21- January 22, 2015

goisrael

Has anyone tried this and successfully left from JFK? I am looking at dates in January.

Shlomo

Here’s hoping someone is listening to this older post. How about ATL? Will I get my luggage in ATL or will Delta automatically route it to PHL the final destination? Thanks!
