Just imagine – No Mikvah to drive to, plus taking a flight is even more complicated now, and often not even possible, due to COVID-19.

For the past three years, Chanan and Tuba Chernitsky have served a Jewish community in one of the most outlying and remote areas of North America.

Unlike the Caribbean, the weather in Newfoundland is cold for most of the year and using the Atlantic Ocean isn’t a viable option.

Mikvah used to mean getting on a plane and flying to Toronto (2 and half hrs each way) or Montreal (3hrs each way). A full day of travel each month.

Then COVID-19 hit.
Travel became difficult.
They are desperate to build a Mikvah.

They are now asking for help in these difficult times to help them build a Mikvah in Newfoundland.

Please open your hearts and contribute whatever you can. Every penny is necessary and together we will make it possible. No doubt you will be blessed with tenfold Brochos.

Dedication opportunities are still available!

I know Channan from my days in Morristown. He was always there to help someone else so shlichus was just the next step in that. Great guy and great family.

בהצלחה !

Michoel

If they start building it now, when will it be completed?

Pad18

“This will allow for a functioning Mikveh within a few months.”

Chaim

Channan is an amazing person!
And this an amazon project!

I could be mistaken, but I believe for a number of years the Chabad in Honolulu didn’t have a “traditional” mikvah, and instead had a logistical setup with the ocean. I can certainly imagine that the waters of Newfoundland aren’t exactly as comfortable like the beaches of Honolulu or Maui. Best of luck on this endeavor.

From an article entitled COLD OCEAN:

The ocean over the continental shelf is cold. On an annual basis water temperatures are 7-10°C lower than at corresponding latitudes on the west coasts of North America and Europe. This is primarily because a major cold ocean current, the Labrador Current, flows southward along the east coasts of the province at a rate of about 35 km a day. Over the Grand Bank it turns southwest and a branch current flows westward along the south coast of the island and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence through the Cabot Strait. The Labrador Current also enters the Gulf through the Strait of Belle Isle.

And it looks like the temperature right now, in the summer, is 53.4F https://www.seatemperature.org/north-america/canada/st-johns.htm

Yikes. It’s a shame they don’t have natural hot springs for the immersion

Just asking

Is this what the rebbe wanted?

Dan

Absolutely!
Why do you ask?

Liam K. Nuj

Definitely! And the Rebbe wanted to you to ask that question, if only to spark interest.

Pathetic building a mikva has to be controversial!!!

Iconoclast

Aside from the shaliach and his wife, how many others of God’s Frozen People will actually USE a mikvah there? If you build it will they plunge? For the 300K down payment surely you can cut a deal with Icelandic Air to bring you to Wrecky avec’s hot springs….

Dan

The point of any shliach is to get all of the women in the community to use the mikvah. That’s a much easier sell with a proper mikvah than the ocean.

And once built, more attractive place for Orthodox travelers to visit! Newfoundland is compared to Iceland for its scenic beauty.
Would love to visit. Big Mitzvah!

Chaim

there is no bigger thing then building a Mikva for…
it’s such an incredible Zechus for the chabad shaliach and I wish him well!
