Items from the clearance are final sale, though many credit cards (including almost all AMEX cards and some others like Chase Sapphire Preferred) allow you to return items for up to 90 days from the date of purchase when the store won’t take them back.

Plus save $50 off $200 with AMEX:

Twitter method:

Signup for Twitter and you can save money with AMEX.

All you have to do is sync your American Express card with your twitter account to save money at rotating stores.

-Tweet #AmexColeHaan for a one-time $50 statement credit for spending a total of $200+ or more at Cole Haan in store or online by 10/02.

Wait a minute and you should have a message in your Twitter notifications tab that you have successfully enrolled.

You can sync multiple cards to save even more.

In the image below you can see where to write the tweet, how to tweet, and where to check for the confirmation in the notification tab.

You can register all of your primary and secondary AMEX cards on Twitter to save $50 on each card, it just entails either: Unsyncing and resyncing cards via this link or making a Twitter account for each card.

If you do unsync and resync multiple cards on the same Twitter account you must change the tweet slightly each time like:
#AmexColeHaan
#AmexColeHaan 1
#
AmexColeHaan 2
And so on.

When resyncing there is no need to fill out your billing address, just fill out the first half of the form with your name, email, and your credit card number.  You can skip the optional fields asking for your billing address, card expiration, and the 4 digit code.  You can use the same email address for all of your cards.

Forgot which card you registered? Just unsync and resync.

AmericanExpress.com method:

To see if you have this offer in your account just login to your AMEX account, click on any of your cards to go the activity page, click on “AMEX Offers For You,” and save the offer to your account.

If you also have multiple cards with the offer don’t rush to save the offer to your account!  Open up the Offers page for each card in a separate tab in the same browser.  Then go between the tabs to save the offer to each of your targeted cards.  Otherwise once you save the offer to one card it disappears from your other cards.

You can also register your secondary cards for their own AMEX login and register each of those cards as well.

Is This The End Of The Line For Ink Bold?

DDF user yakov116 first reported a few weeks ago that the Chase Ink Bold card was being discontinued based on what a manager in a Chase bank branch told him.

The card was still available in branches after that, but I just called around to a few branches that have Sunday hours in various cities and they all confirmed that the Ink Bold card is being phased out and is no longer available in-branch.

The Ink Plus card offers nearly identical incredible benefits and will continued to be offered.

But if you want to get an Ink Bold card this may be your last chance to get while it’s still being offered online.  The difference between Ink Plus and Ink Bold is that the Plus card is a credit card and the Bold card is a charge card.

Being a charge card, the Ink Bold offers a flexible spend limit that adjusts based on your usage.  You can also exceed that flexible line by a lot and still not have an issue running a charge through.

Sad to see another option go, but it seems like this may be the last chance to get a charge card from Chase.

24,800 Points…And A Free Slurpee; Last Days To Finish Freedom Q3 Bonus Spending

Update: Tuesday is the final day to finish bonus spending for Q3 on your Freedom card.

You can register for Q4 spending now as well.

Click here to see which department stores qualify for 5 points per dollar in Q4. You’ll also earn 5 points per dollar at Amazon.com and Zappos.com.

-Chase Freedom Visa-Earn 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points when you spend $500 in 3 months plus 2,500 points for adding an additional user.
There is no annual fee for Chase Freedom!
—————————————————

I just got back from 7-Eleven where I picked up 9 OneVanilla cards and a slurpee.    Most 7-Eleven’s are categorized as gas stations even if they don’t sell gas, you can confirm each one on the Visa merchant categorization site if you have a Visa card.

$4,500 worth of cards cost me $4,544.55 spread across 3 of my Freedom cards. They had to bring rung up one at a time. When that was all done I reminded the clerk about my slurpee and he said that’s on the house :D

The purchase will earn 24,800 points and liquidating the cards won’t be hard at all.

We’re in the last month of Q3, so you have until the end of the month to earn 5 points per dollar spent at gas stations and Kohl’s.  Other gas stations and Kohl’s also sell gift cards good for other stores.

09/14 will be the last day to activate your Q3 Chase Freedom 5% categories. Although they are called “5% categories” you really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be cashed out for 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending you will earn at least 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points. If you or your spouse has a Sapphire PreferredInk Plus, or Ink Bold card you can transfer Freedom points over to one of those cards and then transfer them at a 1:1 ratio into much more valuable airline miles (United, British Airways, Southwest, Korean, Singapore, etc) or hotel points (Hyatt, etc).  The $1,500 quarterly limit is per Freedom card.

Until 2016 if you have a Chase checking account you will also earn a 10% bonus on all points earned.  That means you’ll earn a whopping 5.5 points per dollar in these categories or 8,250 points each quarter. Those points post for the prevous year in February.

On 09/15 you’ll be able to register for Q4 which includes Amazon.com, Zappos.com, and Department stores.

Of course if you have an Ink Plus, Ink Bold, or Ink Cash card you will earn 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent all year round on telecom, cable, internet, as well as everything from office supply stores, which includes gift cards to other stores and prepaid cash cards that can be used anywhere. With the Bold/Plus cards that’s capped at $50,000 per year and with the Cash card that’s capped at $25,000 per year. Plus the Ink Visa cards earn 1% cash back on top of 5 points per dollar for $200+ purchases at Staples and other stores with Visa Savings Edge.  The cards also earn 2 points per dollar year-round at gas stations and either hotels (Bold/Plus) or dining (Cash).

AMEX Small Business Saturday Will Return 11/29/14; 3x Better Than The 2013 Version!

Making my way through the news that came up over the 73 hour electronic hiatus (the first of of 3 such hiatuses over the next few weeks)…

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.

Small Business Saturday 2014 Terms And Conditions

Last year AMEX slashed the Small Business Saturday credit from $25 to $10. This year it will be $30, though it will take 3 swipes per card to get that. My local kosher grocer just gives me their machine at the checkout counter to make my way through my cards. I’ll have to allot triple the time to run through them this year, but at least the store credit will last me three times as long :D

-You will be able to register your American Express Cards at www.shopsmall.com at 12:00 A.M. MST (Mountain Standard Time) on 11/16/14 until 11:59 P.M. MST on 11/29/14, unless the registration limit is reached sooner.
-Registration is limited.
-Use your registered cards on 11/29/14 to spend $10 or more in a single in-store transaction at a qualifying small business that appears on the Small Business Saturday Map. Online transactions do not qualify.
-You can earn $10 back for up to 3 such $10 transactions for a total of $30 back per card.
-Card Member will receive a one-time $10 statement credit for that transaction from American Express within 90 days after 11/29/14.
-Consumer and small business cards are eligible. Corporate cards are not eligible.
-Bluebird and Serve cards are eligible. Other prepaid cards are not eligible.
-If the qualifying purchase is returned or cancelled, the statement credit may be reversed.

From past years’ experience this should still work with 3rd party AMEX cards like those from Citi, however if for whatever reason you do not get credit automatically getting it manually will be extremely difficult. With AMEX issued cards it’s easy to be credited manually.

As in the past this will also work with primary and secondary cards directly from AMEX, but not with secondary cards from 3rd party issuers like Citi. Of course each card must be registered separately but you are able to use the same email address.  Beware that some people have reported going through a financial review for adding too many additional cardholders to their account.

With just 1 or 2 free additional user cards you can effectively wipe out the annual fee of an excellent card like the Starwood or Everyday Preferred card!
—————————————————————————–

There’s still time to signup for additional cards (and add additional users to each of those cards) to take advantage of this promotion.

Consumer cards include:

-Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express
-The Amex EveryDay Credit Card from American Express
-The Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card from American Express
-American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card
-Platinum Card® from American Express
-Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express
-Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express
-Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
-TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express

With Frontier And Spirit Launching Focus City Operations In Cleveland How Long Will United’s Focus City Operations Last?

-CLE Is Dehubbed; The Continental-United Merger Has Brought Nothing But Misery To All

———————————————————————–

United downgraded Cleveland from a small hub to a large focus city in June.  They went from about 60 destinations to 19.  A big downgrade, but Cleveland is still by far their largest non-hub operation.  They kept service to all 7 other hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington/IAD.) as well as 12 other cities (Boston, Cancun, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, NYC/LGA, Orlando, S. Louis, Tampa, and Washington/DCA)

I said back in February right after the announcement,

“If Cleveland is lucky perhaps we’ll get Porter flights to Toronto or JetBlue service to Boston and JFK.  And if we’re unlucky perhaps we’ll get Spirit ;)

Spirit announced today that they will make Cleveland a focus city.

It will be phased in next year with daily nonstop service from Cleveland to Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando. There will also be 3x weekly service to Tampa in the winter, 4x weekly service to Fort Myers in the winter, and daily service to Myrtle Beach in the summer.

Cleveland has become a major focus city for the nation’s ultra-low-cost carriers.

Frontier was the first to dive into Cleveland after United’s departure. They fly nonstop to Atlanta, Cancun, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, NYC/LGA, Orlando, Phoenix, Punta Cana, Raleigh/Durham, Seattle, Tampa, Trenton, and Washington/IAD.

Other flight additions after the dehubbing include USAirways service to Phoenix, Southwest service to Las Vegas and Phoenix, Delta service to Hartford, Indianpolis, Raleigh/Durham, as well as expanded Delta service to Atlanta, JFK, and LGA. Southwest has also added service to Washington/DCA and beefed up LGA service from nearby Akron/Canton airport.

I don’t see how United can sustain their focus city operations at Cleveland in light of this massive influx of low-cost carrier flights. Nor do I think the onslaught is over. I still think JetBlue and perhaps others will join the party.

I definitely expect to hear about further cuts to United’s flight operations at Cleveland.  Within a couple years Cleveland will probably just be a large spoke city with service to United’s hubs and very little else.

Aegean Gold Changes Are Coming And They Won’t Be Pretty

Update: Here are the changes and they’re not pretty indeed.

In short:
-The new program starts 11/24/14.

-If you currently have Aegean Gold you’ll need to fly 12K miles+4 Aegean flights or 24,000 miles without Aegean flights between 11/24/14-11/23/15 to keep your status.  And you’ll have to keep doing that every 12 months thereafter.
If you don’t do that you will be downgraded to Silver on 11/24/15. You’ll then have a year as Silver to either keep that level, move up to Gold, or fall down to blue status.
-If you have a Gold card with a 2016 or 2017 expiration date the jury is out as to whether you’ll be able to get Star Gold benefits like lounge access when showing the card to another airline.
-There’s little value to be had in the new program if you won’t be flying Aegean.

——————————————————————————-

Originally posted on 09/22:

DDF member SPLP hails from Greece and let DDF readers know last week that Greek airline Aegean will be severely downgrading their elite program.

Aegean purchased fellow Greek airline Olympic Air last year, and proves once again that mergers are never good for consumers.

For the last several years the Aegean program has been an easy way to get Star Alliance gold status.

Once you flew 20,000 miles and got gold status, the terms and conditions stated it wouldn’t expire as long as you took one Star Alliance flight every 3 years.  Plus Aegean Star Alliance gold status got you and a guest free access to domestic United lounges, something that even top-tier United status does not do.

But the Aegean and Olympic programs are being combined and their terms will be changing. From now on you will need to re-qualify for gold status every year. I called Aegean (+302106261000) up a few times (thanks Google) and all the reps confirm that major changes are coming though they are coy about what exactly they are.

Some people have Aegean gold cards that expire in 2016 or 2017 but they wouldn’t say what will happen to them or if the status will end sooner than that. They just say that emails will go out next month detailing the changes. But one rep confirmed that from now on you’ll need either 4 Aegean/Olympic flights+12,000 miles or 24,000 miles per year to earn gold status.

As discounted economy fares on airlines like United only earn half credit in the Aegean program, it effectively kills the program for most. Though United first class fares do get triple miles in the Aegean program, so perhaps there will be some use for some folks.  United domestic first class does not give lounge access, but flying it with Aegean Gold does of course.

I’ll make an update to this post when the full details come out.

Bose QC15 Headphones For $249.99 Shipped From Best Buy

These have never been below $269 from Amazon.
Note that the QC15s will be discontinued as the replacement Bose QC25’s have been released. But now is a chance to get a discount on these.

I own a pair of QC15s and they’re a dream come true while traveling. They’re comfortable enough to wear for hours on end, by far the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever owned.

Yes, they’re very expensive. But they’re built well and last for many years. Divide the cost over the amount of flights you take in 5 years and see if they’ll pay for you. Not that you can’t use them while you’re studying or any other time, but that’s when they really shine.

And the noise cancellation drowns out the drone of the airplane engine so well that when you take them off in middle of a flight you’ll be in shock that you were ever able to fly without them. They make for a peaceful flight and I sleep like a baby on the plane with them over my ears.

Included is a small carrying case and two audio cables. One is standard for laptops/phones and one has a mic/remote for iPhone/iPod control and hands-free iPhone calling.

American-El Al Partnership Ending 10/31/14

On November 19th I made several predictions about the American-USAirways merger. Several have already come true.

-As referenced in #3 and #4, the American OneWorld round-the-world award chart was killed and USAirways started collecting fuel surcharges on British Airways and has already killed some off-peak awards.

-And I wrote in #9,

“Beware that El Al may decide to sever its relationship with American if they become a competitor and you may no longer be able to use American miles on El Al. Though if El Al would do that they would lose codeshare access to other US cities that they get from American though they can always set one up with an airline like JetBlue.”

And unfortunately that’s come to fruition as well.

“Effective November 1, 2014, flights taken on El Al will not accrue AAdvantage miles due to the discontinuation of American’s frequent flyer relationship with EL AL.

All award travel on EL AL must be booked and ticketed by October 31, 2014. Travel is valid one year after ticket date, and must be completed by October 31, 2015. No changes to the EL AL segments are allowed during that period.”

El Al used to be partners with Delta and that relationship ended when Delta started flights from Atlanta to Tel Aviv. Eventually those flights shifted to JFK.

American’s subsidiary USAirways of course flies to Tel Aviv via Philadelphia. The best way to book that flight is with less than 40K Starpoints round-trip via a transfer to LAN.

As American works out their issues with the former TWA employees who were stiffed in Israel they will surely launch more flights to Israel from JFK and Miami. And El Al wants no part of that.

Had the United-Continental merger not gone through then I think El Al would be announcing a partnership with United today. Alas it did and United flies to Israel as well thanks to absorbing Continental’s flights. Which means there are no major North American carriers remaining to partner up with. Air Canada, Delta, and United all are competitors and all have a better business class product than El Al.

I still think a JetBlue partnership may occur, but that will likely be a codeshare-only relationship and not a frequent flyer relationship.

If you have AA miles and want to book a trip to Israel do it now before award inventory is completely wiped out by other AA mileage hoarders. Don’t wait for 10/31 to book a trip.

There is still time to transfer Starpoints to American to book flights on El Al, that transfer typically takes a few days.

You’ll need 45K miles in coach and 67.5K miles in business each way to fly nonstop from North America to Israel on El Al. El Al has flights from JFK, Los Angeles, Newark, and Toronto to Tel Aviv.

If you stop in Europe that price can drop to 40K if you fly between 10/15-05/15. There’s a lot more info on hacking that award that in footnote *** at the end of this post.

Asia is a real bargain. Tel Aviv to Asia is just 22.5K miles in coach and business is just 30K. El Al flies nonstop to cities like Bangkok and Hong Kong. Their business class isn’t anything to write home about, but 30K is still a great bargain. In fact I just helped my parents book a trip from the US-Europe-Asia-Israel-US using AA miles with a flight on El Al in business class from the far east to Israel.

And El Al was a good way of getting from Israel to Australia for just 30K in coach and 45K in business as you can route from the Middle East to Australia via Bangkok and Hong Kong. Or you can use a 60K first class award to connect to a Qantas First class flight in Asia. Or you can use 30K AA miles to fly business to Bangkok and 30K United miles to fly Thai Business or 40K United miles to fly Thai First down under.  Thai First even comes with a free hour long massage in their Bangkok lounge.

Here is the rest of the AA award chart. You can always combine flights on El Al with other AA OneWorld and non-alliance partners on the same award.

Note that American agents often can only see 2 El Al awards at a time, so have them grab those 2 seats and then have the agent check for 2 more or just call back.

Some agents don’t know how to properly search for El Al award seats due to their confusing class codes (business on El Al is the same class as coach on other airlines, leave it to the Israelis to come up with the one :D ), so you may need to use some HUCA.

AA.com doesn’t show El Al awards, so you’ll need a Matmid account to research availability online.

Of course earlier this year HAS Advantage points stopped transferring to El Al as well.

Stay tuned for a post on the best remaining ways to use miles to fly on El Al in a post-AA and post-HAS era.

Rent A Private Jet From Cleveland To NYC/Teterboro Tomorrow For $536

JetSuite offers last-minute deals to rent out a private jet on the cheap.

Tomorrow they have a flight from Cleveland to NYC/Teterboro that can leave at 10:15am. If you were planning on driving from Cleveland to NYC for Rosh Hashana you can grab this instead :D

You can bring up to 7 passengers, so your cost per seat can be as low as $76. WiFi and refreshments and free. A lap child under 2 is free.

If it says to wait to request that means someone else has it in their cart until the time expires as shown.  It will change to sold out if they actually book it.

The reason it’s so cheap is that they need to ferry the planes anyway for customers paying the big bucks so they offer deals that change daily based on where they need to ferry the planes.

You can fly back to Cleveland for just 4,500 BA Avios plus $5.60 per person.
