DansDeals Seminar: Jerusalem

Thanks to everyone who came out to #DDSJlem

You guys were a great crowd and the questions asked afterward were perhaps the sharpest overall from any seminar that I’ve done.

Well over $4,000 was raised for Tzevet Hatzolah of Israel from ticket sales of the event!

After 14 seminars in the US it’s time to take things to the holy land (glitches help ;) )

The 15th DansDeals seminar will be held in Jerusalem on Motzei Shabbos, March 7th at 8:30pm.

You can purchase tickets via this link.

Please note: The seminar will be given in English only. It is designed for Americans, and while there will be some tips for non-Americans, the content is heavily targeted towards Americans.

It will be located at the Nevat Yisrael, 24 Shmuel Hanavi St. in Jerusalem, Israel.

The cost of admission is $13. Light refreshments will be served.
As with all DansDeals seminars, the entire ticket price (after credit card processing fees) will be donated to charity. Ticket sales for this seminar will benefit Tzevet Hatzolah of Israel, the organizers of this event.
You will have to designate who will be attending as tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.

-Men and Women will be seated separately for this event.
-Men and Women ages 15 and older are welcome to attend, no kids or infants please.
-Recording devices and photography of the slides are not allowed so be sure to bring something to take notes with!

Schedule (subject to change):
8:00pm: Doors open. Failure to show up by 8:30pm may result in your seat being given away to someone else.  A short video presentation of Hatzolah’s work will be shown at 8:15pm.
8:30pm-9:30pm: Seminar Part 1-Credit Cards and mileage earning on a beginner to intermediate level.
9:30pm-10:45pm: Seminar Part 2-More advanced tips and tricks for mileage redemption, paid flights, hotel stays, car rentals, etc.
10:45pm: Trivia and Q&A session.

-If you are a beginner: Hopefully you will learn a lot, but I cover many subjects in a relatively short period of time. Don’t feel bad if you don’t understand many things or if you start to feel lost, feel free to stay afterward and I’ll clarify them.  Or better yet start reading the DansDeals Forums where you can learn more about anything you want to know.  There won’t be time to explain most subjects at length, so take good notes of the concepts, and read more about them after the seminar on DansDeals.com and on the DansDeals Forums

-If you are on an intermediate level: You may know of many of the concepts I talk about but you should still learn more than enough to make attending worth your time and effort.

-If you are on an expert level: You probably already know most or all of what I’m going to talk about so feel free to attend, but don’t expect 2.5 hours of new information, it may be a complete waste of your time.  Some experts have told me that it was worthwhile, others have said it was not, I guess it depends on what kind of expert you are :)

Seating is limited so book your ticket first and then tell your friends ;)

2 New Starwood Options Come To South Beach

Update: Starwood has changed The Royal Palm from a category 5 to a category 6.
————————————————————
Currently the only Starwood hotel in South Beach is the category 7 W Hotel.

The Royal Palm Miami-South Beach joins Starwood tomorrow as part of the SPG Luxury Collection.

While the lowest paid rate for tomorrow night is $559+tax=$657, it is just a category 5 property, so you can redeem just 12,000 Starpoints for the room. On a 5 night stay it would be just 9.6K Starpoints per night.

It’s located on 15th and Collins, just half a block from the Hyatt Centric South Beach that will be opening within the next few months.

Unlike the Hyatt, the Royal Palm is located on the ocean side of Collins Avenue.

The Aloft South Beach is accepting reservations beginning June 11th.

It too will be a category 5 property, however it will not be on the ocean side of Collins.  On June 11th the lowest rate for a room there is $309+tax=$349.

Always good to have more points accepting hotels in Miami Beach!

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.
Earn Starpoints on the Starwood Consumer American Express and on the Starwood Business American Express.  Each offers 10,000 bonus Starpoints for spending $1 and another 15,000 bonus Starpoints for spending $5,000 within 6 months for a total of 30,000 earned Starpoints with $5,000 of spending.

Starwood 2015 Annual Category Changes

Update: Categories will change at midnight on 03/10 local hotel time. Book now to lock in lower prices on hotels going up or rebook existing reservations on 03/10 to save on hotels that are going down!

Starwood 2015 Complete List Of Annual Category Changes

Earn Starpoints on the Starwood Consumer American Express and on the Starwood Business American Express.  Each offers 10,000 bonus Starpoints for spending $1 and another 15,000 bonus Starpoints for spending $5,000 within 6 months for a total of 30,000 earned Starpoints with $5,000 of spending.

Book stays before 03/10 local hotel time to lock in current rates for future stays at hotels that are going up.  Almost all hotel stays are cancellable for free until a certain amount of time before the stay (read the fine print).  If you have a reservation at a hotel that is going down then just cancel and rebook the stay on 03/10 when this year’s category changes go into effect.

Just over 10.5% of SPG hotels will become more expensive and 11.8% of SPG hotels will get less expensive when redeeming points.

Most hotels chains reorganize their categories yearly to keep them current with the average rates that they charge.  The beauty of hotel points is that there are no blackout dates or capacity controls, if there is a room you can use points for it.  So even if a major event is in town and rates are quadruple what they normally are you can still use the regular amount of points as long as the hotel is not sold out of standard rooms.

This list is subject to change and other hotels can still be added to it.

Starwood’s standard award chart will not change:
If you stay 5 nights with points at category 3-7 hotels the 5th night will be free.
Category 1 = 2,000 (weekend), 3,000 (weekday).
Category 2 = 3,000 (weekend), 4,000 (weekday).
Category 3 = 7,000
Category 4 = 10,000
Category 5 = 12,000 (Low Season), 16,000 (High Season).
Category 6 = 20,000 (Low Season), 25,000 (High Season).
Category 7 = 30,000 (Low Season), 35,000 (High Season).

The capacity controlled cash and points chart doesn’t change either:

Point transfers to airlines with a 25% bonus for 20K transfers remains unchanged as well.

Overall changes are pretty good this year. Some favorites, like the Westin Lagunamar Cancun, jump from 4 to 5.
However lots of other popular hotels get more affordable, including all of the SPG properties in Maui.

Sample hotels going more expensive:
-W Retreat Koh Samui, Thailand, was 6, now 7.

El Al Matmid Discounted Award Tickets

El Al Matmid Discounted Coach Awards

El Al has a pretty decent sale for coach awards across the globe, including travel between Tel Aviv and North America, South Africa, Europe, or the Far East.

Awards are discounted further for “Executives” and it’s pretty easy to become an executive.  A transfer of just 5,000 points from the US AMEX Membership Rewards program to El Al’s Matmid program will earn you executive status for a year.

Note that transferred points expire after 36 months and can’t be extended with activity.

With this sale, executives will pay just 400 points one-way or 800 points for round-trip travel between JFK, Newark, or Toronto and Tel Aviv.  That’s equal to 40,000 AMEX points round-trip.

Tickets between Los Angeles and Tel Aviv for executives will be 500 points one-way or 1,000 points for round-trip travel. That’s equal to 50,000 AMEX points round-trip.

Fuel surcharges and taxes add $355 round-trip from the US to Tel Aviv, but they add only $183 USD ($228 CAD) to round-trip tickets from Toronto to Tel Aviv.

-Valid for awards booked by March 19.
-Tickets between the US and Tel Aviv are valid for departures between April 19-May 31. The return officially needs to be completed by July 18, but from searching it appears that the return can actually be done at any time at the discounted rate.
-Tickets between Toronto and Tel Aviv (and tickets between Tel Aviv and the rest of the world) are valid for departures between April 19-June 30. The return date also appears to be discounted for travel at any time.

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.

-American Express Membership Rewards points can be earned from consumer cards like The Amex EveryDay Credit Card , The Amex EveryDay Preferred Credit Card, the Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card and The Amex Platinum Card.

Business cards include The Enhanced Business Gold Rewards Card and The Business Platinum Card.
Points transfer instantly from AMEX to El Al.

Softcard To Cease Operations 03/31

Google purchased Softcard in order to knock out some of the competition and they announced today that the app will go away on 03/31.

When you open a Serve card in the Softcard app you get increased daily and monthly limits for free credit card funding.

It’s hard to say at this point if those limits will now be decreased, but I’d guess that the higher limits will stick around for those who opened their Serve card via Softcard.

I’ll miss the app itself. Not really for its intended purpose, but for all the free money they threw our way :D

Make Your Purim Joyous This Year!

Please note: This is a paid advertisement which is stickied as the top post, please scroll down for new posts.

On Purim day, Jews are commanded to focus all their energies on rejoicing.

To insure that ALL Jews partake in this commandment there is the special mitzvah of Matanos L’evyonim – providing for those who are less fortunate on Purim day,and allowing them to perform this commandment as well.

However, there are still too many Jews who instead of rejoicing, are mired in the depression, starvation, and hopelessness of their grim financial situation.

Through Ezras Yisroel’s Matanos L’evyonim campaign everyone can seize upon this priceless opportunity to help others fulfill this important mitzvah.

With your donation, Ezras Yisroel can guarantee a Happy Purim, free of monetary worry, to those who need it most.

TAM: Fly Nonstop From JFK-Toronto For $60 And Toronto-JFK For $97 With Free Luggage

Bookable on CheapoAir.

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.
Earn 3 points per dollar on airfare with the American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card.

Limited seats are available. Always search for 1 seat and then work your way up to the number of seats you need in order to book as many seats on sale as you can.

Brazilian carrier TAM will start flying nonstop between JFK and Toronto later this month.

It’s a tag-on flight from Sao Paulo and operated so that the 767 doesn’t just sit parked at JFK all day.  It’s a 5th freedom route that allows a foreign carrier to sell tickets on select routes between 2 other countries.  Similar to the JFK-Vancouver 777 route that is sold by Cathay Pacific.

TAM’s merger partner LAN used to serve the route, but that ended a few years ago.

TAM is a OneWorld airline, so you can use Avios for this route.  The rates are the same as for flights on American, 4.5K Avios in coach and 9K Avios in business each way.

In coach you’ll get 1 free 50 pound bag, in business you’ll get 3 free bags.

With the current sale it’s worth just saving those miles for another time.

Valid JFK-Toronto $60 dates:
March: 29, 30, 31.
April: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23.

Valid JFK-Toronto $65 dates:
April: 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
May: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

Valid Toronto-JFK $97 dates:
March: 29, 30, 31.
April: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 23.

Costco Signs On With Citi And Visa

Costco announced today that they will be switching their co-branded credit card from AMEX to a Citibank Visa.

If you have a Costco AMEX card you’ll likely be able to switch it for a different AMEX card, though those details are still fuzzy. If you want a new Costco co-branded credit card you’ll need to apply separately for the new Citi Costco Visa.

Costco will soon begin to accept Visa credit card cards and effective 04/01/16 will no longer accept AMEX cards. You won’t have to pay with a Citibank card, any Visa will do.

Costco in Canada recently switched from AMEX to Mastercard, and going forward you’ll need to use a Mastercard in Canada and a Visa in the USA.

Charter A Private Jet From NYC To West Palm Beach Today For $1,073

Update: The Teterboro flight has been booked, the Newburgh flights is still available.

————————————————————————-

JetSuite offers last-minute deals to rent out a private jet on the cheap.

Today they have 2 flights from the NYC region to West Palm Beach, FL.

There’s a flight available from Teterboro at 11:30am and a flight available from Newburgh/Stewart at 1:15pm.

You can bring up to 6 passengers, so your cost per seat can be as low as $178.

If you’re looking for a return flight, there are at least 6 seats available to fly back from West Palm Beach nonstop to LaGuardia on Wednesday or Thursday for just 7.5K BA Avios per person.

WiFi and refreshments and free. A lap child under 2 is free.

The reason it’s relatively cheap is that they need to ferry the planes anyway for customers paying the big bucks so they offer deals that change daily based on where they need to ferry the planes.

If it says to wait to request that means someone else has it in their cart until the time expires as shown. It will change to sold out if they actually book it.

If you book it be sure to post a trip report with pics on DDF :D

Don’t need the whole plane? In the past DDF members have split a plane, so make a post there if you want to join in on some fun!

Winter Break 2015 Trip Notes Part 2: Cancun And The Riviera Maya

-Continued from Winter Break 2015 Trip Notes Part 1: Miami

-Find dozens of trip notes like this one by clicking on the “Trip Notes” tab on top of the DansDeals banner at the top of this site.
———————————————————————-

There are a plethora of warm weather destinations you can fly to from Miami on the cheap with British Airways Avios.

The decision on where to go was made easy thanks to having lifetime Fairmont Platinum status. The Fairmont Riviera Maya has been calling my name for some time now.

???????????????????????????????

We flew from Miami nonstop to Cancun from Sunday morning through Thursday afternoon in the last week of January. We got 4.5K Avios awards for myself, my wife, and our 2 kids. That’s a total of 36K Avios (about 25K AMEX points during the 40% bonus that was going on then) for the 4 round-trip tickets that would have cost upwards of $1,500 otherwise, an incredible use of miles.

Chase Ink Plus 60,000 Point Signup Bonus Returns

Update: Today is the final day to apply for the 60K signup offer.  The offer is slated to fall back down to 50K tomorrow.

Note: You can use the tabs on top of the DansDeals logo banner to signup for AMEX card offers.

For other cards and to signup for credit card offers like this you can click here or on the “other credit cards” tab on top of the DansDeals logo banner to view links for all other card offers.  After clicking on business credit card offers just scroll through the pages until you find the card offer that you’re looking for.

The Ink Plus is a business credit card and you will need to scroll through the pages of the business credit cards to find the offer.

—————————————————————————————–

Offer Details:

Spend $5,000 in 3 months on a new Chase Ink Plus business card and get a 60,000 point signup bonus.  The previous signup bonus was 50,000 points, though this card has offered a signup bonus as high as 70,000 points in the past.

The current 60K bonus offer will run until March 1st.

It’s not difficult at all to get a value of 1.75 cents per point when using Chase Ultimate Rewards points for travel by transferring them into airline miles or hotel points. That would make this signup bonus worth over $1,000.

You’ll also earn between 5,000 and 25,000 bonus points for the base spending depending on whether you spend in 1, 2, or 5 point per dollar categories.  So after spending $5,000 you’ll have between 65,000-85,000 Ultimate Rewards points at your disposal.

With a Target REDcard you can spend $5,000 in a single month for free.

There is a $95 annual fee. There are no foreign exchange fees on the Ink Plus card. Insurance coverage on car rentals in every country outside of the US is primary on leisure or business rentals. Within the US coverage is primary for business rentals and secondary on leisure rentals.

Applying for a business card and the benefits of business card spending:

The Ink cards are business cards. But you may be already running a business that qualifies for a business card and there are several huge advantages that business cards have over consumer cards as you can read here.

For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can just open a business credit card for “Joe Smith Sole Proprietorship” as the business name. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that.
Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and just use your social security number in the Tax Identification Number field as well as in the social security number field.

If you’re like me and you run more than one business you can signup for multiple of the same card for each business to manage each businesses expenses separately.

A great thing about these business cards is that they don’t report your spending on your personal credit report.

On personal cards if you spend money on your card your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a few dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month.

On a business card it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. Plus if you close a business card it won’t ever have an effect on your score.

Lounge Club:

You’ll also getive 2 free lounge visits per user, even on free additional user cards. Here is a link to find valid lounges worldwide. Lounges include the Dan Lounge in Tel Aviv and the Art & Lounge in Newark which both have kosher food.

Cash back:

Ink cards are now all issued as Visa cards, so you can register them for Visa Savings Edge.

With that program you earn cash back on top of points.  You’ll earn 1% cash back at Chevron, and Texaco, 2% cash back at TigerDirect, 4% cash back at Alamo and National, 5% cash back at Lenovo, Sony, and several hotel brands, etc.

Bonus points:

Ink cards offer 5 points per dollar on internet/cable service and telecom purchases, so that’s a nice rebate when you purchase a new cell phone and off your cable bill.

They also earn 5 points per dollar at office supply stores. There are hundreds of gift cards sold by office supply stores.

-Upgrading on your carrier’s website to an iPhone or Galaxy? 5 points per dollar.
-Buying gift cards for gas? 5 points per dollar plus you’ll pay the lower cash rates at the pump.
-Buying gift cards for Amazon, Gap, Groupon, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Marshalls, Nordstrom, Southwest Airlines, TJMaxx, etc? 5 points per dollar.

Gift card uses:

Your local school or other charity will be more than happy to accept donations of Amazon gift cards for supplies or any other useful gift cards for chinese auctions, raffles, fundraisers, etc.

They will give you a tax deductible receipt for the full face value-the price you paid for the gift cards. And at the same time you’ll earn 5 points per dollar. So while doing good you can still get a nice chunk of points and you’ll save on your taxes.

Or you can use Visa gift cards for everyday spending thereby getting 5 points per dollar on everything you buy anywhere via the Visa gift cards.  You can read how lucrative that can be in this post on where you should be using each of your cards.

Point Currency:

Chase Ultimate Rewards offer instant and fee-free transfers to top-notch mileage and points programs at a 1:1 ratio.

Transfer partners include:
-United (Star Alliance) is still an excellent currency, even after their devaluation earlier this year.  They never charge fuel surcharges, have very flexible routing rules, they allow one-way awards for half the mileage, they have short-haul awards for 10,000 miles, they allow for a stopover and an open-jaw so that you can really maximize a single award ticket into several free trips, and they have dozens of partners to fly on, most of which can be booked on their website.
-British Airways (OneWorld) is awesome for short-haul awards. Just 9,000 miles for a round-trip zone 1 or 15,000 miles for zone 2 short-haul award. The zone 3 award for 25,000 miles round-trip can also be a bargain, for example a flight between the west coast and any of the Hawaiian islands or between Boston and Ireland is just 25K miles round-trip with no fuel surcharges. Flights to Israel on Air Berlin are just 60,000 miles with no fuel surcharges. They allow one-way awards for half the mileage. There are no close-in or expedite fees. You can cancel an award for as little as $5.60. Infants are only charged 10% of the miles on international trips instead of 10% of the full fare like US carriers charge. Plus they don’t collect fuel surcharges on AA/USAirways within the western hemisphere, on Qantas within Australia, on Air Berlin, Aer Lingus, Alaska, or LAN and you can transfer points to Iberia to limit fuel surcharges there as well.
You can read more in this post on everything you need to know about BA Avios. And you can see 103 places you can go to nonstop from NYC with Avios.
-Korean (Skyteam) offers unbeatable first class availability (A380 First Class Trip Report here) and they also have true bargains on partner travel, just 30,000 miles to fly round-trip on Hawaiian or Alaska to Hawaii in coach or 60,000 miles in first. And it’s just 20,000 miles to fly to Alaska in coach or 40,000 miles in first. You can even get a free stopover on the way to or in Alaska! If you can find Delta saver availability you can fly to Hawaii round-trip for just 25,000 miles in coach or 45,000 miles in business.
-Singapore (Star Alliance) offers private walled-in first class suites that can only be booked with their miles. A suite one-way from JFK to Europe is 57,375 miles. Travel to the US48, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and Israel can all be had on the cheap. There are no close-in booking fees and changes and cancellations are very cheap. Fuel surcharges apply when flying on most airlines besides United. More info here.
-Southwest offers a value of about 1.7 cents per point towards award travel.  Plus you get 2 free checked bags, free flight changes or flight cancellations. and you can even get a point refund if the price of your flight goes down. You can also transfer points to Airtran for flat-rate awards like business class upgrades or free tickets at a flat rate instead of a rate that corresponds to the ticket price. From Airtran they can even be converted back into the old Southwest program that also offers flat rate awards.
-Virgin Atlantic has some niche uses with awards on Delta.
-Hyatt is a very powerful hotel currency. They have finally added a cash and points option that offers some excellent values and more importantly those stays earn points, elite stay credits, promo credits, and you can use suite upgrades on cash and point stays as well.  It remains far less expensive for high-end hotel stays than any other hotel program, a $1,500/night villa at the Park Hyatt Maldives would run just 25,000 points or 12,500 points+$150.
You can also funnel points through Hyatt to Southwest to qualify for a free Southwest Companion Pass which gives you a free companion every time you pay for or redeem for a free ticket.
-You can also transfer points to Marriott, Ritz Carlton, Priority Club, and Amtrak. I’ve never been on an Amtrak in my life, but some people have reported getting some really nice bargains on Amtrak travel via their program.

The beauty of miles over points or cash-back:
The great thing about being able to transfer points into airlines or hotels are the incredible values you can attain.
-A coach ticket to Hawaii can cost $1,000 and a first class ticket to Hawaii can cost $3,000 but you can use 25K or 45K miles for that same ticket. If you were using Capital One points you would need 100,000-300,000 points per ticket.
-A last minute ticket or a ticket where you don’t stay for 3 nights from New York to Detroit costs $1,500 in coach but just 9,000 miles. That’s a value of 16.7 cents per mile. If you were using Capital One points you would need 150,000 points per ticket.
-A first class ticket to Asia can cost $27,000 but you can use 135,000 miles for that same ticket, a value of 20 cents per mile. If you were using Capital One points you would need 2,700,000 points per ticket.
-A night at a Park Hyatt in Paris, Sydney, or the Maldives can run $1,500 with tax but you can use 30K points for that room, a value of 5 cents per point. Or you can use less points and get even better values with cash and points. If you were using Capital One points you would need 150,000 points per night.
And that’s all besides for the fact that getting a Capital One card costs a minimum of 3 credit pulls whereas you can get several Chase cards with just 1 credit pull.

It’s Back: Discounted United Partner Business Awards To Europe And Asia

Update 2, 02/28: This offer officially must be booked by tonight, 02/28.

I think United is realizing that they overpriced some of the partner award rates during their devaluation last year, so I won’t be surprised to see this sale return again.

—————————————————————————–

Update, 02/05: We’ve seen this offer come and go since last year without any official announcement, but United has finally made it official and published this list of 10 zones with discounted partner award pricing.

They’ve also published an end date. You have to ticket your award by 02/28/15.

While it says that previously booked travel isn’t eligible for a refund, people have reported success calling to have it repriced and have had miles refunded without paying any fee!

—————————————————————————–

Originally posted on 02/01:

These discounted partner awards were previously only valid until 03/31/15. They were bookable in December and the first half of January before they stopped working.

Apparently must have been happy with the results as they are back and can be booked for travel all the way through 12/31/15!

Discounted awards:

1. Fly one-way between the US and Europe on a partner airline in business class for the United rate of 57.5K (normally 70K)
2. Fly one-way between the US and Central Asia on a partner airline in business class for the United rate of 70K (normally 80K)
3. Fly one-way between the US and North Asia on a partner airline in business class for the United rate of 70K (normally 80K)
4. Fly one-way between the US and South Asia on a partner airline in business class for the United rate of 70K (normally 80K)
5. Fly one-way between Europe and the Middle East on a partner airline in business class for the United rate of 35K (normally 45K)
