Alaska Buys Virgin America For A Massive Premium, Though Nobody Can Explain Why

Alaska is buying Virgin America for $2.6B in cash, or about $4B including assumed debt.

That’s nearly double what Virgin America’s market cap was before negotiations started.

Alaska currently has no Airbus aircraft and they’re buying an airline with an all-Airbus fleet. Though most of that fleet is leased, not owned.

Virgin America’s hubs are in Los Angeles and San Francisco, airports that are not slot restricted. Alaska could have grown organically there by just buying more Boeing planes and it would have cost a whole lot less than buying an airline.

They do gain a small presence at slot controlled Dallas/DAL, JFK, LaGuardia, and Washington/DCA.

It’s highly unlikely that Alaska will keep Virgin’s flashy first class or hip vibe. They may even look to sell off Virgin’s leases and the planes that they own.

Virgin America’s mileage program will be rolled into Alaska’s much stronger mileage program.

So what did Alaska gain?

They stopped JetBlue from buying Virgin America (which would have been a far more logical fit) which makes them the number 5 carrier in the US. For now.

They gain some bulk to compete with Delta, which has been encroaching on Alaska’s Seattle hub.

But overall, it’s hard to see what the driving force is to make them overpay so wildly for Virgin America.

Alaska currently has lots of airline partners in OneWorld, Skyteam, and non-aligned partners. It will also be interesting to see if they can hang onto them even as they grow through the merger. I’d wager that they won’t.

On The Topic Of KSMLs; Not Having A Reserved Kosher Meal Costs Lufthansa How Much?!?

I always preorder a kosher meal when it’s available. More often than not it seems like KSMLs (that’s airline speak for kosher meals) are reheated dog or cat food at best, or completely unfit for human consumption at other times. But I do enjoy taking pictures of just how bad the food can be.

Stogel long-life kosher meal served in USAirways business class from Paris to Philadelphia in December 2012:

The rock-hard frozen gefilte fish is always worth a chuckle. I mean, who is eating this stuff??

Weiss kosher meal served in SAS business class from Newark to Oslo in March 2016:

Sometimes the food is good though. Hermolis meals are usually decent enough.

Hermolis sliced lamb stew kosher meal served in Cathay Pacific first class from Hong Kong to Toronto in January 2011:

My favorite kosher meals have been from even more exotic locales. The KSML on Singapore from the Maldives catered by Sydney based Lewis caterers and the KSML on United from Honolulu catered by Oahu Kosher stand out the most.

Oahu Kosher supplies fresh salmon, ribeye steak, and chicken for their kosher meals on United. This delicious salmon was served in business class from Honolulu to Newark, February 2016:

JetBlue Mint class KSMLs between JFK and LAX or SFO also get decent reviews.

More often than not though, I don’t eat the KSML. I use it as leverage to get a flight attendant to heat up my BYOK, as in, Bring Your Own Kosher meal (double wrapped) so that it can be warmed up onboard.

Most flight attendants will warm up your own wrapped meals, but some flight attendants are hesitant to so. The strictest airline by far is Cathay Pacific, but once I showed a flight attendant the lousy KSML served from Vancouver they were happy to warm up the divine Maple BBQ Chipotle burger and onion rings that I had bought at Maple Grill earlier that day.

Most airlines are pretty easygoing, but it isn’t always that way. The USAirways flight attendant from Paris was hesitant, but when I asked if she would serve that KSML to her pet, she became more than happy to warm up the felafel I brought from L’as du Felafel in Paris.

TAM First Class was amazing:

???????????????????????????????

Their KSML that they served us in October 2014 from Miami to Sao Paulo…not so much:

???????????????????????????????

But they had no problem warming up my BYOK:

???????????????????????????????

When we flew to Israel last year USAirways moved us to United. Connecting in Newark meant getting delicious Sesame Chicken with free delivery from New Kosher Special. The flight attendant was more than happy to warm some up on the plane as we didn’t have kosher meals because of the flight switch.

There are times when the kosher meal doesn’t show up at all. Some people will say that I shouldn’t complain about that, but if it’s something that’s included in the ticket I don’t see why it shouldn’t be brought up. If nothing else, it also helps the airline correct procedures for the future.

When United forgot my kosher meal when flying from Newark to Honolulu before the Island Hopper last May they compensated me with 10,000 miles, which is my general preference over frozen gefilte fish 😉 Besides, the flight attendants had no problem heating up the Pomegranate travel meal that I brought along. The Pomegranate meals are tailor-made for BYOK, if only an airline would contract with them to supply their kosher meals!

Getting some miles or a travel voucher is typical, though some airlines won’t give you anything.

Isaac Kopfler booked a Lufthansa ticket from Zurich to Sao Paulo on a codeshare flight operated by Swiss.
When you request kosher meals from a partner airline it often gets lost in translation, if you actually want the meal you should confirm it directly with the operating carrier, not from the airline that sold you the ticket. And that’s probably what happened in his case and why he didn’t get a kosher meal on the flight.

He sued Lufthansa for $5,000, saying that he fasted for 14 hours due to the lack of a kosher meal.
I think that’s beyond the pale.
Do Observant Jews really travel relying on the kosher meal served on an airline? Was there no fruit on the plane? And is that really something that merits litigation?

At any rate, the Brazilian court ordered Lufthansa to pay him $1,400 for “moral damage” and Lufthansa has committed to paying him. The airline also says they will offer him further compensation in miles.

$1,400 and bonus miles for a kosher meal gone missing? That’s a whole lot of gefilte fish!

What are your best and worst KSML experiences?
Do you rely on kosher meals from the airline or do you bring your own food?
Have you tried my BYOK method to get a flight attendant to warm up your own double-wrapped kosher meal from home or from a restaurant?

Roundup Of 35 NBA, NFL, NHL, And MLB Teams That Have A Kosher Food Stand

It’s hard to find a comprehensive list of kosher stands in sports stadiums, so here is a list of sports teams that have a kosher food stand.

It’s also tough to keep the list updated, so if you know of stands that no longer exist or new ones that have opened please post a comment!

Be sure to do your own research on Rabbinical supervision before heading to the game.

Bear in mind that some stadiums may have multiple kosher food options.  For example at Yankee Stadium there is the regular kosher stand and then there is a full no-expenses spared catered event with all-you-can-eat gourmet kosher food that is free for Legends Suites ticketholders.  The Legends Suites kosher food are even under a different rabbinical supervising agency then the regular kosher stand.  The Legends Suites menu also changes on a daily basis.  I was invited to sit in Legends Suites at an Indians game several years ago and wrote about it in this post.  Apparently it has gotten even better since then. If you are sitting in the Delta Suites or the Field MVP club you can also purchase food from Legends Suites.

Sprint, Please Tell Me This Is An April Fools Joke…

Sprint sent this email today to their subscribers:

sprint

Apparently Sprint thinks it’s a perk to pay “just” $131.88 per year for Amazon Prime when anyone can signup for Prime directly from Amazon for $99 per year with a free 30 day trial. (Never mind the occasional promotions that pop up).

Sadly, the email doesn’t lead to an April Fools landing page, it leads to a real signup page.

Apparently Sprint is in such deep financial trouble that this is what they have to resort to…

AMEX Hilton cardholders can also book discounted 4 night award stays as follows:
Category 5: 130,000 points
Category 6: 160,000 points
Category 7: 190,000 points
Category 8: 220,000 points
Category 9: 260,000 points
Category 10: 300,000 points

These discounted 4 night awards are called AXON awards and can only be booked over the phone (800-920-5649), but will have the same availability as regular awards.

Hilton is a tough currency to love due to the high point requirements, but we absolutely loved our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem last year and hope to stay there again. These limited time offers are all some of the richest that have ever been offered for these cards.

At the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem we were treated to a fantastic daily breakfast, which is free for Hilton Gold and Diamond members. There is a mind-boggling quantity of awesome kosher food there, from dozens of daily hot dishes to hard cheeses, fresh fruits and pastries to fresh squeezed juices, as well as on-demand dishes like french toast, pancakes, waffles, and eggs. Unlimited wine, hot or cold chocolate drinks, and espresso drinks are included as well!

Gold and Diamond members get upgrades, food and drink amenities, late checkout, and other great benefits. Their Friday night Shabbos meals are pricey, but are well worth the expense (DDFers agree with that take as well), and the in-house restaurants are excellent as well.

With a breakfast like this, you may not even be hungry for dinner…

Breaking: Anbang Punts On Starwood Buyout

Word is just hitting the street that Anbang will not be buying SPG in the end.

This comes on the heels of Anbang making a higher offer than Marriott over the weekend and amid questions about who exactly controls Anbang and where their backing comes from.

And now all we can do is wait and see what Marriott does to our beloved SPG program…

Park Hyatt Aviara Deluxe Suite From $183+Tax Per Night!

Park Hyatt Aviara Deluxe Suite From $183+Tax Per Night!

The Park Hyatt Aviara is a luxury hotel that is located in Carlsbad, CA, about 30 miles north of San Diego and 100 miles south of Los Angeles.

The Ralphs in La Jolla is 20 mies away and has a full service “kosher experience” with fresh made fried chicken, sushi, burgers, deli, and more.

You can grab a 1,140 sq ft deluxe suite that sleeps up to 5 guests from just $183 per night. Tax adds $22 per night and there is a $33 resort fee. The resort fee covers the golf driving range, tennis courts (including rackets and balls), recreation center, game room, resort pools, beach amenities (including chairs, umbrellas, towels, and toys), a DVD library, and WiFi.

The deluxe suite normally goes for several times that amount and it’s currently pricing out at the same price as a regular room that’s less than half the size of the deluxe suite!

There is a 2 night minimum stay and there are valid dates in April in May, though they are selling out quickly.

Bookings are nonrefundable.

Sample valid dates: May 8-10.

Make sure to book the deluxe suite for $183 and not the regular room!

Chase Freedom Q1 Bonus Spending: Save On Gas, Uber, Subway Rides, And More!

Update: Today is the final day to complete Q1 spending.

You can also click here to register for Q2 spending, good for 5 points per dollar at grocery stores and wholesale clubs. Effective 6/20 you can even use your Freedom Visa at Costco where you should earn 5 points points per dollar!

—————————————————————————————-

Originally posted on 1/4/16:

Chase Freedom Linky

Chase Freedom is an excellent no annual fee card thanks to its quarterly 5% categories. While they call it 5% cash back, you’ll really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be worth much more than 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending per quarter you will earn at least 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points over the course of a year (7,500 points per quarter at 5 points per dollar spent).

For a limited time only the signup bonus is increased to $150 for spending $500 in 3 months plus $25 for adding an additional user and making a purchase. Those actually come in the form of 17,500 points that can be used for $175 cash back, but would be put to better use if used as airline miles.

You can click here to activate this quarter’s Chase Freedom 5% categories.

2016 bonus categories:
Q1: Gas stations and local commuter transportation
Q2: Grocery stores and wholesale clubs like BJs and Sams Club. Effective 6/20 Costco will also start accepting Visa cards and should qualify as a wholesale club.
Q3: Restaurants and more to be announced.
Q4: Holiday shopping (Likely Amazon.com and more to be announced)

Q1 bonus spending:

You can earn 5 points per dollar on up to $1,500 in spending at gas stations between 01/01-03/31. You can buy gift cards to other stores at gas stations as well.

Visa seems to count all 7-Eleven’s as gas stations, even if they don’t sell gas!

You’ll also get 5 points per dollar on local commuter transportation which includes:
-Local and suburban passenger commuter train, subway, buses, metro, and ferry tickets.
-Taxis
-Uber
-Lyft

Freedom alone can’t transfer points into much more lucrative airline/hotel/train currencies, but if you or your spouse has a Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus card then you can transfer points from Freedom to one of those cards and from there to your favorite travel currency. You can read at the end of this post which currencies they can transfer to and why those points are much more valuable than just taking cash back. The Freedom card can also keep your points alive for free if you do close one of those cards.

The value of the points will be based on where you use them, but if you use those points for a trip worth where they are worth 2 cents each then you’ll have effectively earned 10% back on those “5 point categories.” The sky is the limit of the value of airline miles as they aren’t tied to the cost of a ticket. That’s good for people in the know and bad for those who are not. 1 mile can be worth 0.25 cents or it can be worth 25 cents, it all just depends on how you use them!

Hong Kong is home to several great kosher restaurants and shuls. Mul Hayam restaurant, located next to the Kehilat Zion shul in the Kowloon section of Hong Kong, is excellent. The JCC located on Hong Kong Island has very good dairy and meat restaurants as well as an awesome Sunday night all you can eat buffet, just don’t forget to bring your passport to get in! Chabad of Lantau also offers meals with delivery options.

We spent a Shabbos with Chabad of Hong Kong Island where the food was excellent and the atmosphere is awesome. People have rave reviews about Shabbos at Kehilat Zion as well.

After Shabbos we moved the W in Kowloon, which is one of my favorite SPG hotels in the world. We got an amazing upgrade and there’s a very cool rooftop infinity pool and hot tub. Plus the bellhop picked up our bags from our room and checked them straight home to Cleveland without us ever having to touch them thanks to the airport express station located in the W’s basement.

There are lots of other great hotels where you can spend your points at as well.

Most hotels even give you a free cell phone to use while in Hong Kong.

Americans do not need a visa to travel to Seoul, Hong Kong, or to take the ferry from Hong Kong to nearby Macau.
