What Not To Do: How To Avoid Having Your Account Closed

Banks don’t close down accounts for no reason. I have significant point balances in currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards and don’t sweat it because I avoid risky behavior (even if I do have a couple dozen cards from those 2 banks). The 3rd major transferable point program, Starwood Starpoints, is not affected even if your card is closed.

Those that are more risk-averse or who engage in riskier activity should definitely look into transferring your points to an airline where they will be safe.  However points are far more versatile when they’re in a transferable point system as you can wait until you want to redeem for travel before locking them into a single program.  In this post from a year ago I talked about some of the best Chase transfer options.

If you are hit by a financial review from American Express (F/R) they will ask for your tax returns. As long as you made money on the books and filed a return you should pass the review. Your credit lines may be reduced if your taxes show less income than you reported when you applied for the card.  If you make nothing on the books then you can ask if they will accept your bank statements.  If they won’t just go ahead and close the accounts yourself so that it doesn’t say closed by creditor on your credit report. American Express will allow you to transfer Membership Rewards points even if you are under financial review.

Other banks like Citi and Chase can take adverse action (A/A) if they feel you are a risky customer.  In these cases that may reduce your credit lines or close your cards.  Some people have been able to get the bank to reconsider and reopen their cards, so it’s definitely worth trying to appeal. With Citibank ThankYou points the points have been confiscated. With Chase some people have had points confiscated while others have been able to appeal and transfer the points or at least get 1 cent per point even if the decision to have their cards closed remains final.

Typically these things can happen when you have several risk factors and the bank decides it’s too risky to have you as a customer.  Here are activities you should try to avoid:

-Using the majority of the credit line on any given card.
Ideally for your credit score you want to use as little of your available credit on any given card as possible. This can be accomplished by paying off 99.9% of your bill before your statement generates or by using business cards.

Even if you do that the bank will not like seeing you use too much of a credit line as it can mean that you are racking up a bill that you won’t pay.  Excessive spend is a trigger for financial review and adverse action.   As with everything in life, moderation is key.

-Uploading gift cards online to Bluebird.
Bluebird now allows you to upload $100 per day online from your debit card for free. Don’t do it from a gift card as it’s a definite trigger to get your account suspended.
Far better off going to WalMart and using their ATM machine or any cashier to load a gift card on Bluebird. Besides for being able to do 10x the amount per Bluebird card it takes away a huge risk factor. But for gosh sake if you load with a cashier just say that you want to load your Bluebird from your debit card and don’t say you want to use a gift card.

Or just buy Vanilla Reloads from stores like CVS which transfer to Bluebird online without any issues. Most CVS stores will take credit cards but even in the same store some cashiers may decide not to allow it while others will. When I was in Miami last year the cashier in the front said no but the pharmacy did it without a problem.

Personally I also avoid making online Bluebird transfers to checking accounts. Better off paying off your credit card bills, rent, mortgage, or even writing a Bluebird check to your spouse.  However I wouldn’t deposit that check into an account with a bank that I have credit cards with. I also don’t have Amazon Payments deposit my balance into an account with a bank that I have credit cards with.

-Having too much total credit.
It’s been said in the past that having a credit line over $25K on any American Express card can trigger a financial review. If your credit lines are far beyond the income that you report it can also be a red flag.

-Not paying your bills on time and/or carrying large balances.
These actions will lower your credit score significantly. If your score has a big drop it can trigger action from other banks besides the one where you had a late bill or carry a large balance with.

-Using your credit line multiple times in a month
Banks don’t love it when you pay off your bill several times in middle of a month just in order to be able to spend beyond what your monthly credit line is.

-Adding too many additional users.
This is a known trigger for an American Express financial review.

-Transferring/Receiving Ultimate Rewards points to/from another Ultimate Rewards points account that belongs to someone besides you or your spouse.
This is a known way to get your Chase accounts shut down. Anecdotal evidence is that transfers directly to someone else’s airline/hotel account (as opposed to Ultimate Rewards account) is safe, though a couple people have reported that they think it may be a trigger as well.

-Depositing excessive cash or money orders into a checking account.
Banks don’t like to see excessive cash/money order deposits into a checking account as it can look like money laundering. If you do that with a bank that you have a credit card with it can cause a shutdown of both your checking account and your credit cards.

-Having a 3rd party pay off a credit card bill or deposit a check into your account.
Pay off your own credit card bills from your own bank account. Don’t deposit checks that aren’t made out to you.

-Getting multiple checking account bonuses.
Some people have reported being shut down for getting multiple checking bonuses.

-Paying for the mistakes of others at your address.
Typically when a bank does a financial review or decides to close accounts they will go after all accounts located at the same address.

A Plethora Of Staples Deals

1. Everyday Savings.
Thanks to Plink Points and Ink cards a $60 purchase at a Staples store will earn 300 Plink Points and 300 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

2. AMEX Statement Credit.
Check your AMEX offers page for a $25 statement credit for spending $75 at Staples.
Some people have had success getting an AMEX phone rep to add the offer to their card if it doesn’t show up online. Others have been able to call to have it added to additional user cards. YMMV.

3. Mastercard offer.
This week you can get a $20 Staples gift card via Easy Rebate when you buy $300 in Mastercard gift cards.  A $200+$100 card or 2 $200 cards will trigger the rebate.

The Mastercards are generally harder to load to Bluebird but they’ll work just fine via Amazon Payments. The trick to unload the full amount via Amazon Payments is to enter the incorrect expiration date when you add it to your Amazon Payments account. After adding the card just go back and correct the card’s expiration date and send the full amount on the card.

4. Paper.
There are offers for 100% back in Staples Rewards on a Hammermill 10 ream case of a paper and on a Staples ream of paper this week.

5. $5 off $30 coupon.

Not valid on gift cards.  If you use it on the paper then the Staples Rewards will be reduced by the coupon savings.

Do You Plink?

Plink tracks your credit card spending and rewards you for spending at stores that you choose from.

Stores include Advance Auto Parts, Gap, Sears, and Staples.

You have to give Plink your card login information, but they do employ bank level encryption. I’ve held off on writing about them but they’re been around for a little while now and so far nobody has had any problems using them.  I feel safe enough now to link up my own card and make a post about it.

Here is my referral link after you signup and link your credit card you should get 300 points good for a $3 gift card to places like Amazon and Walmart. If you’re also signing up your spouse you’ll want to signup using a different browser or browse incognito or else they won’t get the 300 points.

At Staples (in-store or online) for example you get 50 Plink Points when you spend $15, 125 Plink Points when you spend $30, or 300 Plink Points when you spend $60 or more.

300 points is worth $3 so if you buy a $100 Visa card for a $5.95 fee the cost will be just $2.95.  If you buy a $200 Visa card for a $6.95 the cost will be just $3.95.
If you use your Ink Plus, Ink Bold, or Ink Cash card on a $200 Visa card your cost would be $206.95 less $3 in Plink points and less 1,035 Chase Ultimate Rewards points which are worth roughly $19.67.

Of course Staples also carries tons of other gift cards with no fees at all and now you can earn even more points for those purchases. $60 in gift cards with no fees will earn 300 Plink Points and 300 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

You only earn a maximum of 300 points per transaction but there’s no limit to how many transactions you can earn points for, so don’t buy more than 1 card per transaction.

You can only link 1 credit card on a Plink account at a time.

More BA.com Improvements: Choose Your Seat On Partner Flights

It’s great to see BA continually invest in improving the BA.com experience.  They have recently made it easier to find partner flights and to compare the cost of flying in different classes of service.

Avios are an incredible way to fly on short flights for just 4,500 or 7,500 Avios each way.  They’re also easy to accumulate thanks to Membership Rewards, Starpoints, and Ultimate Rewards points all having Avios transfer options.

And of course there is the Chase British Airways card which gives 50,000 Avios for spending $2,000 with the annual fee waived for the first year.

However they are confusing for people which is why I wrote an Avios Knowledgebase and a tutorial to get American benefits when using Avios on AA flights.

When you book a flight with Avios you get a BA confirmation number that won’t work on AA.com. The big improvement that I haven’t noticed before is that BA.com can now forward you into your AA.com reservation which gives you your AA confirmation number and allows you to select seats.

When I went onto BA.com I logged in, went into “My Bookings,” and entered the BA.com confirmation number.
Then you can click on your flight number and choose “View or change seats for this flight.”

You will then get a message that you will be sent over to American’s website. Agree to that by clicking on reserve seats and you’ll be redirected into your AA.com reservation.

ba3

Once forwarded you’ll want to save your AA confirmation number. You’ll be able to use that to checkin on AA.com within 24 hours of your flight to print up your boarding pass.

Besides for choosing seats you may also be able to enter your AA AAdvantage mileage number.
While you don’t collect miles for flights booked with miles you can get a free bag for yourself and everyone on your itinerary if you have AA elite status or the Citi AA credit card. Elites can also select preferred seating once their mileage number is in the reservation.

If you are unable to enter your AA number in your reservation you can still use the Finnair workaround that I wrote about in this post.

Southwest/Airtran Route Map

As always you get 2 free checked bags if booked on Southwest.com.  Plus you can cancel revenue tickets with no charge and use the funds for a future flight.  Point reservations can be cancelled for free with the points redeposited.

If you have previously booked Southwest tickets with cash or points and the price has gone down be sure to call to get a refund for the difference!

When Southwest has a sale the points needed for a free flight also go on sale as Rapid Rewards is a revenue based program.  A round-trip short-haul flight can be had for just 4,560 points-a value of over 2 cents per point.  If you have an unlimited use companion pass thanks to opening 2 Southwest cards you would get a value of over 4 cents per point making a 50,000 point bonus worth over $2,000.

Through 10/31 the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Chase Visa Signature Card gives 50,000 bonus points for spending $2,000.  There are 2 consumer and 2 business versions of the card that each give 50,000 points. Those cards can be accessed at the bottom of the application link where it says “Additional Southwest Airlines Credit Cards.”  Read more in this post.

The network carriers are also matching these fares in case you care more about earning traditional airline miles than the free bags and cancellation policy
-For example a United flight from Cleveland to Kansas City has just dropped from $506 to $196 connecting or $218 nonstop. Southwest doesn’t fly nonstop on that route but United has matched with a great nonstop price.
-A United flight from LGA to Cleveland can be had for $98 round-trip (or $95 with the United.com discount code I posted last week.).

Fare rules:
-Book by 10/10.
-Travel between 12/04-12/18 or 01/07-02/12.
-Travel not valid on Fridays and Sundays.
-Valid on nonstops only
-Seats are limited.

-Flights 0-500 miles=$49 each way.
-Flights 501-1,000 miles=$99 each way.
-Flights 1,001-1,500 miles=$129 each way.
-Flights 1,501+ miles=$149 each way.

JetBlue Now Allowing Family Pooling Of Points; A Roundup Of Other Programs That Do As Well

Earlier this year JetBlue improve their TrueBlue program by eliminating the expiration date for points.

Now JetBlue is allowing 2 adults and 5 children to pool their points together to earn awards faster.

Of course the real achilles’ heel of the program is that the points just aren’t worth as much as other point currencies and that they lack aspirational international award redemptions.  You can transfer American Express points to JetBlue but there are several better options than that to get more value out of your points.

But it would be nice if more domestic airlines allowed families to pool their points together.

British Airways Avios allows family pooling but by doing so you disable to ability to redeem your points for anyone outside of your family pool, which makes that a poor option.

JetBlue will allow you to continue to redeem for people outside of your pool, which makes it far more beneficial than the BA program.

The current USAirways promotion running until 10/15 is an excellent way to move over some points.

Other airlines that have household pooling options include ANA, Asiana, Etihad, Emirates, JAL, Korean, Qantas, and Turkish.

Hotels are much more generous in this regard.  Starwoods allow you to transfer points between anyone at the same address for free.  Hyatt allows anyone to transfer your points to anyone in order for them to be able to redeem an award. Marriott lets you transfer points to a spouse in order for them to be able to redeem an award.

And of course Chase allows spouses to transfer points to each other as well.

Their Premium Economy comfort class product has rave reviews, so if you have the chance to upgrade to that on the cheap you should definitely go for it.

1. Register your card via the link above.
2. Use your registered card to make a single purchase of $150 in store or at ShopRite from Home by October 12, 2013.
3. Get $30 back on your statement.

This will work for all AMEX consumer and small business cards, even those issued by other banks like Citibank.  It will also work for authorized user cards issued directly by AMEX as long as they are registered separately and receive their own confirmation email.  It will not work for authorized user cards from other banks like Citibank for example as their authorized user cards have the same credit card number as the primary card and therefore can’t be registered separately.  Prepaid cards and Bluebird are not eligible.

Le Meridien Dead Sea Leaving Starwood 01/01/14

I went with 2 of my 5 brothers to Israel in 2007 and we traveled from Nimrod’s Fortress in the Golan Heights down to Eilat and everywhere in between for a month.  We lived it up at Starwood properties thanks to Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express.

According to my research notes from that trip there were at least 13 Starwood properties in Israel.  There was the category 1 Le Meridien Haifa, Le Meridien Dead Sea, Sheraton Tiberias, Sheraton Eilat, and the Sheraton Dead Sea.  There was a category 2 Sheraton Tel Aviv.  And there was the category 3 Herod’s Eilat, Sheraton Towers Tel Aviv, Sheraton Ramat Gan, Le Meridien Eilat, Sheraton Eilat, and of course the Sheraton Plaza Jerusalem located just minutes from the old city.  There was also the awesome category 3 Herod’s Vitalis Spa in Eilat where for 2,800 points and $45 as a lowly SPG Gold member we were upgraded to an incredible ocean suite with 3 balconies and relaxed under their hot and cold waterfall massage fountains.  We never could have traveled like that if was had to pay hundreds of dollars per room per night, but I had no problem swinging for a few thousand points a night.

Today that trip would probably never have happened as they are nearly all gone from SPG and are mostly under Fattal management.

Between the hotels on that trip and flying in Continental’s BusinessFirst we really lived it up.  Of course it helped that Continental.com (which is identical to today’s United.com) upgraded all 3 of us from coach to BusinessFirst in both directions by typing in a simple $100 coupon code that I had from purchasing a Continental Privilege Pack. Definitely one of the more rewarding aspects of spending too much time playing around with an airline website. I even have a video recording of exactly what I did to get that to work though it’s got too much personal info in it to upload.

At any rate as of 01/01/14 the Le Meridien Dead Sea will be leaving SPG.  That leaves just the category 4 Le Meridien Eilat and the category 5 Sheraton Tel Aviv as the remaining Starwood properties in Israel.  The Le Meridien Eilat will also eventually leave Starwood as well once its SPG contract runs out though that date has yet to be announced.

On the good news side, Starwood is planning on opening the W Tel Aviv-Jaffa in 2015 with 125 rooms/suites and 38 private residences.

The Le Meridien Dead Sea is a complete anomaly within the Starwood system.  It has $500 room rates which should make it a category 5, 6, or 7 property and yet it is priced as a bargain category 1.

Those with good memories will recall that we have been down this road before.  In 2011 there was a similar announcement made and SPG.com even showed that they would be leaving.  However they had a change of heart and decided to renew their SPG contract, apparently for 2 more years through 01/01/14.  This time there is going to be a much larger management shakeup and such a change of heart seems unlikely.

At least you can still travel to Israel for free by transferring Starpoints to airlines like AA for travel on El Al, to ANA for dirt-cheap surcharge free travel on United and USAirways, to USAirways for travel on any Star Alliance carriers, or to Air France/KLM Flying Blue for cheap Delta and Skyteam travel.

77 Direct Flights From Los Angeles That Can Be Booked With British Airways Avios

———————————————————————–

Did you know that there are 77 places you can fly to from Los Angeles nonstop with your BA Avios?
British Airways Avios can’t be beat for short-haul nonstop flights thanks to low award rates, no expedite fees, and practically free award cancellations.  Here are all of the direct flights from Los Angeles that can be booked with Avios.  Be sure to read the British Airways knowledgebase for everything you NEED to know about the BA program.  If you have any questions it’s probably already been answered there!

Notes:

-Rates in the chart are for one-way flights.
-Routes that display the airline in bold are subject to fuel surcharges.
-In the charts below I’ve only included direct flights as BA charges Avios for each flight segment.
-In other words Tel Aviv isn’t on the chart as there are no BA partners that fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv.  Though you can always fly to Tel Aviv via Berlin or Dusseldorf for 30K for the overseas segment and 10K for the Berlin/Dusseldorf-Tel Aviv segment with no fuel surcharges.  It can help to search for Los Angeles-Berlin Dusseldorf and Berlin or Dusseldorf-Tel Aviv separately.
-BA.com does not display availability for all airlines! If you want to book travel on airlines like Alaska, Aer Lingus, and LAN you’ll need to pick up the phone and call BA! You can search Alaska award availability on AA.com before calling BA to book it.
-In rare cases connecting flights can be cheaper than nonstop flights when using Avios and I’ve noted that in the chart.
-Cities in the chart may only have seasonal service.
-A dash means that class of service isn’t offered on that route.
————————————————————————

Want to pickup Avios? You’re in luck as you can transfer points from all over the place to BA.

-The Chase British Airways Visa Signature offers 50,000 Avios for spending $2K.

-The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express awards 25K signup points with no fee for the first year. 20K Starpoints can transfer into 25K Avios with the permanent 25% transfer bonus. Currently there is another 25% stackable bonus which will turn every 20K Starpoints into 31,250 Avios.

-American Express Membership Rewards points can be earned from cards like the American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express
These points can transfer instantly 1:1 to Avios and several times per year there are bonuses that range from 20%-50% to transfer points to BA.

-Chase Ultimate Rewards points are earned from consumer cards like Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Non-Preferred, Chase Freedom and business cards like Chase Ink Bold, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Cash. These points also can transfer instantly 1:1 to Avios.

Groupon: Wine Tasting With Keepsake Glasses For Two And $50 At Tierra Sur For Just $40

Groupon: Herzog Winery

The Herzog Winery is located in Oxnard, CA which is about an hour west of LA without traffic or about 17 hours with traffic ;)

Tierra Sur, located in the Herzog Winery, is the finest kosher restaurant in North America. I reviewed the restaurant as part of these trip notes. The flavors they use are mouth-watering and unique. Their the menu is constantly changing to keep things fresh.

Even just lunch and dinner have completely different options that make it worth eating there twice while skipping off to the nearby massive Camarillo outlet mall or to the Pacific Ocean while building up another appetite.

Or stop off for lunch at the excellent Pizza Nosh in Agoura Hills on your way from LA into the valley before hitting up Tierra Sur for dinner.  Or take the PCH instead of the 101 and stop off at Fish Grill for lunch in Mailbu and be sure to check out the free Getty Villa there as well. Or hit up some of the ocean activities there.

With this groupon you pay $40 for a $50 gift certificate to Tierra Sur. You’ll also get free wine tasting for two people with eight glasses of wine per person and two free souvenir wine glasses. No, I won’t be covering your DUI bill if you drive right after imbibing all of that goodness.

USAirways: We’ll Honor Israel Tickets But We Won’t Give You Miles If You Skip A Leg

USAirways sent an email to people who bought the $300-$500 tickets to Israel that I posted about in late August from NYC and from other cities. The email says that USAirways will not be awarding any miles for any part of the ticket unless all segments are flown. In other words if you are booked from NYC-Philadelphia-Tel Aviv-Philadelphia-Toronto and you wind up skipping the Philadelphia-Toronto segment they are saying that they will not award miles for your entire trip.

They’re also offering a full refund if you’re not happy with that. You can email usairways.noreply@usairways.com to request a refund until 10/15.  (And boy are they hoping you will :D )

Of course you can always continue onto Toronto and take a 4,500 Avios flight back to NYC or Chicago for example. Though one-way flights going to Toronto have just $2.50 in tax there is $50 in tax for one-way flights leaving from Toronto. The Chase British Airways card gives 50K signup Avios (Over 11 free short-haul flights) with the fee waived for the first year.

The far more interesting question will be if they can or will stop people from crediting the flown flights to a partner airline like Aegean or United…if you try that be sure to let us know how it goes.
