El Al To Add “Bed-Like” Seat In Business Class, Reupholster First Class Seats In “Prestigious” Plastic

Disclaimer: I have absolutely nothing against El Al. I have everything against El Al’s incompetent management, which seemingly has not a clue about how to properly run a viable 21st century airline. Trust me, I’d love nothing more than to be singing El Al’s praises.
———————————————————————-

I’d like to officially welcome El Al to 1994.

Their business and first class are woefully behind the competition.  They have bled out business travelers that aren’t forced to fly on El Al to airlines like Air Canada, Delta, United, and USAirways that have high-quality lie-flat beds in business class.

So what do they do? They announced this week that they are finally upgrading their business and first class.

And how are they doing that?

EL AL is redesigning the look of its seats, enlarging the pitch between rows for the comfort of its Business Class passengers, and upgrading to “Bed Like” seats for a comfortable, more pleasant experience on flights to/from New York (JFK).

Yay. “Bed-like.” While many years ago every other major airline has upgraded their business class to true lie-flat beds, El Al will be making it more “bed-like”

At least 1 plane has been converted and reports are that the new “bed-like” is extremely hard and there’s an awkward gap between the top third and the middle cushion that makes it a literal pain in the back.  Plus it’s now harder to climb over your aisle seatmate.  Compare that to business class on Delta or USAirways where every seat has direct aisle access. Air Canada is launching 787 Dreamliner service to Israel in a few months and will offer state-of-the-art business class, also with every seat getting direct aisle access. That will leave United as the only other airline not offering all business class passengers direct aisle access, though at least they have true 180 degree flat business class seats.

El Al doesn’t miss the opportunity to say that they offer the only first class service between North America and Israel.  The problem with that statement is that their first class seat is not nearly as good as the business class offered by the other airlines.

So what are they proud to announce?

EL AL offers its First Class customers an intimate, newly restyled cabin with a prestigious look. The seats have been redesigned and re-upholstered in a faux leather fabric, bestowing a fresh and elegant look to the seats and to the entire cabin.

They are going to reupholster them in shiny new plastic and hope that people will line up to pay for them! And there’s nothing quite as prestigious as a faux-leather that offers practically no privacy.  Just look at all that shiny goodness:

It’s the sorriest looking 3 class international first class I’ve ever seen.

First class is being cut from 12 seats to 8 seats, probably because very few are paying for it anyway. They are also eliminating the first class bathrooms, so now first class passengers can prestigiously make their way into business class to use the bathroom.

Compare that to a real first class on a foreign carrier where they scrub down the entire bathroom after every first class passenger uses it.

Now people will say, but they have the best kosher food in the sky! I’ve got news for you:

1. People paying for business class care about the hard product, getting a good night’s sleep and privacy.  The business class on El Al’s competition offers far more privacy and comfortable seating than El Al’s first class.  And most offer direct aisle access so that you won’t be woken up in the middle of the night by your seatmate going to use the bathroom for the 5th time.

2. Bring a double wrapped meal from a restaurant or Pomegranate onboard and have the flight attendant heat it up for you and it will be way better than any rubbish served onboard an airplane.

While other airlines invest in actually improving their product so that people will want to pay for it, El Al has put lipstick on a pig.  Airlines live and die by their international premium cabin profits. The capital cost of new seats is nothing compared to the revenue gain of business passengers paying for flights.  To refurbish an extremely dated cabin so that it still is light years behind the competition. Are you guys kidding me?

Instead El Al is plowing money into a costly venture named “Up” to try to compete with European low-cost carriers.  It’s a losing battle as the new airline within an airline has the same high legacy costs that El Al has while they compete against airlines with ultra-low cost structures. Continental (Lite, 93-95), Delta (Song, 03-06), United (Ted 04-09), and USAirways (MetroJet 98-01) have all tried to create airlines to compete with the low-cost carriers and they’ve all failed miserably and shut down.  Airlines with high cost structures can’t compete on price with airlines that have ultra-low cost structures.  They need to compete on service and product, but seemingly nobody at El Al gets that.

Who in the world is in charge of making terrible decision after terrible decision at this airline?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

1. El Al doesn’t compete on price, service, or product right now. They need to figure out where to excel if they are going to survive.

2. Israel now pays for El Al’s security costs. Now is the time to tackle labor costs head-on. El Al has far too many employees and managers per aircraft that they own, far and beyond the worldwide average. The unions will be the real death of El Al unless they can be tamed.

3. El Al needs to invest in true 180 degree lie-flat seats in business class that have direct aisle access if they want to compete for business class passengers. They ought to ditch First Class just as everyone else already has and focus on making business class something that will sell itself instead of something travel agents push on people because El Al pays top dollar to them to get those seats filled.  If you’re going to keep First Class then make it something that people will actually pay for, offering the ultimate in privacy and comfort, not something that is worse than business class on most airlines.

4. The Matmid program needs to be scrubbed and redone from the bottom up. It’s confusing, it’s not rewarding, and it stinks. Hire an executive familiar with loyalty programs and how mileage programs have created billions of dollars of annual revenue for other airlines and make a program that everyone will want to earn miles with.

5. Outgoing CEO Eliezer Shkedi has said that the alliances were being anti-semitic and refused to allow El Al to join. Regardless of the claims veracity El Al can safely forget about alliances as they are slowly becoming things of the past anyway. Create strategic partnerships with more airlines and have it all tied into a new Matmid program that earns real miles like every other network carrier in the world. Ditch annoyance aspects like expiring points even with activity and fuel surcharges, and have robust partner options. People will then be happy to collect El Al miles while banks fill El Al’s coffers with cold hard cash. Airlines like American and United make all of their money from selling miles, the actual flying aspect loses money and exists only to sell more miles to the banks.  Perhaps El Al can take a page from their book.

6. The El Al website needs to thrown away and redone from the bottom up as well.  How is it possible that the flagship airline of such a high-tech country seems like it was designed as a 4th grade school project from 1994?

7. Hire Gordon Bethune to run your airline and turn it around the way he did for Continental :D  OK, half kidding here, but seriously, hire someone in the airline industry to run your airline and loyalty program, not ex-military folk with no aviation or business background!  El Al’s CEO and CFO are both on their way out, now is the time to make a critically important hire.

Amazon’s Versatile Prime Gift Option: Lock In Prime For As Many Years As You Want, Convert It Back Into Gift Cards, Transfer Locked Gift Cards To Others

Update, 03/19: Today is the final day to lock in cheaper years of Prime! The price will be 25% higher tomorrow.

——————————————————————

Originally posted on 03/18:

Last Thursday I wrote a post about locking in $79 Prime for an extra year.

Here’s some more info about that option:

You can buy as many Prime Gift Subscriptions as you want for just $79 via this link.

Why would you want as many as you want? Because they never expire!

The truth is that you can even have them all delivered to you right now and you can file them away in a folder in your email.  They will always be good for a full year of Prime and they will never expire.

When you send yourself a gift year of Prime you will get an email with a special link that instantly gives a year of Prime to whatever account opens the special link.  The gift of Amazon Prime isn’t auto-renewing like regular Amazon Prime is.

Just set your Prime not to auto-renew as I showed here. Then buy as many gifts of Prime as you want to lock in the $79 rate. Whenever your subscription ends you can click on the special link from the email and activate another year of Prime.

You can use it for yourself or give it as a gift in the future to anyone else.

What happens if you click on the special link when you still have an active Prime subscription? It will ask you if you want to convert the Prime subscription into a $79 gift card.

If you paid tax for the Prime Gift then you will also get the tax back as a gift card.

If you have gift card funds locked in one Amazon account and you want to transfer the funds to someone else you can buy Prime gift subscriptions with your gift cards and send them to another Prime account.  That other account can then turn them back into gift cards in their account.

While you can’t pay for auto-renewing Prime with a gift card you can pay for the Prime gift subscription with your Amazon gift card balance. You can buy Amazon gift cards at any office supply store with your Chase Ink Plus, Chase Ink Bold, and the Chase Ink Cash Card card to earn 5 points per dollar!

If you have Amazon gift cards and Amazon Prime you really can’t lose by buying a number of Prime gifts for the future.  Either you can save them up for cheaper Prime for years to come or you can always convert them back into $79 Amazon gift cards if you just want to use the funds to buy things sooner!

March 19th is the last day to lock in $79 Amazon Prime, though Amazon can change the Prime gift rate at any time!

So, how many will you be buying?

HURRY! $40 uber Ride Credit For Existing Customers, $85 In Credit For New Customers

Update, 2:30pm: The $40 code has now reached its limit. Congrats to those who got it. As for the rest of you, follow me on Twitter already and quit complaining about missing deals :D

—————————————————————–

Existing uber customers, skip to step 3 for the $40 off promotion code.  Apply it to your account ASAP before it gets used up!

About uber:

uber offers luxury car service via UberBLACK, affordable rides in clean cars at rates lower than taxis in most cities via uberX, and rides for the whole family via uberSUV.  They also offer uberT which allows you to hail a taxi from your phone, but you can’t use credit for that as you pay the driver directly with that service.

You can hail a ride via the uber app from anywhere across hundreds of cities worldwide, but they’re really great at the airport where you can skip the long taxi line and get straight into your private ride. When you request a car you’ll get an ETA along with the name, number, and picture of your driver and you can meetup wherever is convenient for you.  It took all of 1 minute to have an uberx car waiting at LGA as opposed to waiting 20 minutes in line for a smelly taxi.

Tax and tip is included in all fares. You do not pay the driver anything in cash. Rides are charged to your account credit and then to your credit card on file when you first open your uber account.

1. New customer $20 non-expiring credit:

New uber customers can get $20 of free uber credit by first signing up via my referral link here.

The $20 signup credit never expires and can be used on multiple rides.

2. New customer $25 single ride credit, expiring 05/02/14 at 7:04pm EDT:

Immediately after signing up for a new account you can also enter the following code on the promotion page for another $25 credit off of your first ride: Hipmunk

DEAD! 3. Existing and new customer $40 credit, expiring 04/01/14 at 11:59pm EDT:

All customers can enter the following code on the promotion page for a $40 ride credit: NYCZRZR130308

New customers accounts would then look like this:

uber3

Note that you will only see $20 as an account credit. The $25 ride credit and the $40 ride credit will be in the promo field.

Final Days For American And USAirways Lounge Access Via The Platinum Card; Is Platinum Still Worthwhile?

Lose lounges, make $100-$500.

The final day to use The Platinum Card® from American Express to enter an American or USAirways lounge will be this Friday, 03/21.

Some people got emails with a $200 of $500 credit towards any American or USAirways ticket fees or lounge memberships.

I didn’t get that so I used the live chat option while logged in on AmericanExpress.com to ask about that and the agent gave me a $100 credit for incidental spending on American or USAirways between 03/22-12/31.  Others have gotten the $100 credit by calling as well.

Post your results in the comments!

It Plat still worth it?

So what does the card still do to justify its hefty annual fee? Well it does have a 40K signup bonus but with American Express bonuses apparently going to once in a lifetime that isn’t something you can keep on counting on getting in the future.

Airport Lounges. Kosher food in Vegas, Newark, Tel Aviv and more:

The biggest addition are the American Express branded Centurion lounges.  American Airlines was furious when the first Centurion lounge opened in Dallas.  There is also a Centurion lounge in Las Vegas and more lounges will be opening in LaGuardia, S. Francisco, and other airports in the near future.  There are also Centurion lounges throughout Central and South America though those aren’t as luxurious as the US lounges.

Originally these lounges were designed for free access only for Centurion cardholders, you know them as those black cards that cost a ridiculous $2,500 per year with a $7,500 initiation fee that used to give elite status on airline like Continental and USAirways but no longer do.

But once the Platinum card started losing airline lounges they opened it up to Platinum cardholders for free as well. You can bring your spouse and kids into the lounge for free. Or you can bring in any 2 other people with you for free.

What can you get there?

There are lots of DDF reports on the Vegas lounge that you can read here.

-In the Las Vegas Centurion lounge there is a full stocked kosher menu from Haifa restaurant.  And it’s all free of charge.  DDF members have reported that they stock Hot Roast, Schnitzel, Grilled chicken, Baked Salmon, Pastrami Sandwiches, Mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, salad, fruit, rolls, and desserts.  If you call beforehand they can heat the food up for you (it’s all double-wrapped) and have it waiting.  Otherwise there are cold options or you can wait for it to heat up while you wait.  Reports about the food quality and service have been excellent.

If you call a couple days in advance they will even order fresh kosher meals for you, free of charge.

And you can top it off with top-shelf booze, also free of charge.  A DDF member said he did quite a number to their Glenlivet 21 year old single malt!

-In the Dallas lounge they offer a spa with a free clothes-on massage and other spa services.

-In all Centurion lounges they can help you with any AMEX account issues.  You can even access the lounge if you forgot your Platinum card as they can look it up with your ID.

-You can take a shower in the lounges as well and from what I’ve heard they’re a while lot better than the showers found in the airline lounges.  Plus they have L’OCCITANE toiletries which is a whole lot better than the single dispenser of mystery goop found in some airport showers that magically work as soap, shampoo, and conditioner as if it’s manna from the sky.

With amenities like that who needs airline lounges with their low end food and beer?

-Platinum cardholders also get a free Priority Pass membership.

There are over 600 lounges worldwide that accept Priority Pass and you can access all of them for free.

For example:

-In Newark you can access the Art & Lounge.  That’s the same lounge that El Al provides for their business and first class passengers. It has exclusively kosher food and Israeli art.

-In Tel Aviv you can access the Dan lounge.

See the Priority Pass site for their complete list of lounges. Note that you can’t access United lounges with the Priority Pass membership that you get from the Platinum card.

You don’t get any free guests, but secondary Platinum cardholders can get their own free Priority pass membership.

Airspace lounges:

Currently there are Airspace lounges in Baltimore, Cleveland, and JFK (JetBlue terminal).

These are modern lounges with free premium coffee and self service soft drinks.  Additionally you and every guest also gets a gift card valid towards purchasing premium alcohol, local craft beers, cocktails, and meals.

You can access these even with an inactive Platinum card until the card expires 4 years from the date of issue.

Delta SkyClub:

Currently you can bring your spouse and kids into Delta lounges for free when flying Delta. Or you can bring in any 2 other people with you for free.

Effective 05/01 you will not be able to bring in guests for free.  However secondary Platinum cardholders can access Delta lounges for free as well. You can a Delta lounge even with an inactive Platinum card until the card expires 4 years from the date of issue.

Secondary cardholders:

You can add 3 additional users onto a personal Platinum card for $175 ($58.33 per additional cardholder per year).  Secondary users do get full lounge access so they will have access to Delta and Priority Pass lounges for themselves and they will be able to guest others into Airspace and Centurion lounges.

Annual fee:

The annual fee on this card is a doozie, $450.  But it’s not as painful as it sounds.

As with annual fees from most banks, they are refundable if cancelled within 60 days.  It is also pro-rated if cancelled after 60 days and you have another American Express card (i.e. if you have the card for 3 months and then cancel you would get a $337.50 refund), and it is pro-rated if you downgrade the card even if you have no other American Express card.

$200 per calendar year airline fee credit.

Every calendar year you can get a $200 airline fee refund.  That means in your first cardmembership year you can get a $400 refund thanks to a $200 credit in 2014 and a $200 credit in 2015.

You can use it to buy airline gift cards in $100 increments.

Or you can just get it all in cash via the PGGM or the CHFFGM as described here.

Only the primary cardholder get the airline fee refund.

Global Entry Fee Refund

It costs $100 to apply for global entry which lets you bypass the customs line. If you charge it on your Platinum card the fee will be refunded.

If you have Global Entry you also get TSA Pre-Check, which allows you to avoid the nude-o-scope machines and lets you leave your shoes on and laptop in your bag.

Additional cardholders qualify for a Global Entry  fee refund as well.

Starwood Gold Elite Status:

Platinum cardholders get Gold elite status for free.  That gets you free Wi-Fi or you can get a 250 point rebate every time you stay at a Starwood hotel-even if you are on an award stay!

It also gets you free upgrades and 4pm late checkout.

Lost Item Protection:

If you buy something on your Platinum card up to $10,000 and lose it within 90 days of purchase it will be fully covered.  No other card I’m aware of offers lost item protection.  Many cards offer stolen item protection, but that requires a police report to be filed and often it has a cap of just $1,000.

Car Rental Perks:

A 4 hour late return fee-free grace period at Hertz and fee-waived Gold Plus membership, National Executive guarantee upgrades and faster free award rentals, Avis free weekend certificate with 2 rentals, and more.

The card also comes with free checked baggage insurance and it has no foreign exchange fees.  And of course it comes with all of the amazing purchase protections that other American Express cards have as well.

So, is it all worthwhile? It’s not for spending, frankly I value Starpoints earned from the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express more than the Membership Rewards points from this card.  Bizarrely even the less expensive American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card earns more Membership Rewards points than the Platinum card thanks to its bonus categories.

But the Platinum card does continue to have very unique benefits. I’ve laid most of them out for you and you’ll just have to decide for yourself if its worth it based on your own situation :D

Will American Begin Flying Miami-Tel Aviv Next Year?

The Marker (Hebrew) reports that American is examining adding nonstop service between Miami and Tel Aviv in spring/summer 2015 addition to keeping the nonstop service between Philadelphia and Tel Aviv.

I’ve said it several times that I expect to see American eventually start flying from Miami and JFK to Tel Aviv.  I also question the long-term viability of the Philadelphia-Tel Aviv route or even the Philadelphia and Phoenix hubs entirely.

I still have yet to hear the outcome of the 13 year old battle between former Israeli TWA employees who lost their pensions and have been fighting to get American to make good on them ever since they took over selected TWA assets.  I’m sure that we’ll hear about some sort of agreement before an American branded airplane lands in Ben Gurion, lest those employees attempt to seize the aircraft.

Developing, but great to hear rumblings about more direct flights between the US and Israel!

JetBlue Status Match And Challenge Info

Lots of airlines and hotels offer status matches.  I wrote an article about status matching back in 2011 (note that some info there is defnitely outdated) when now defunct BMI gave out free Star Alliance Silver elite status.

JetBlue will now match select other elites to their Mosaic elite status which will last until 12/31/14.

You need to enroll by 04/18/14.

But it’s cooler than that.
-People that aren’t elite can get a 90 day challenge.  Spend and fly on $1,250 worth of JetBlue flights (before tax) within 90 days of the challenge start date and you’ll have Mosaic elite status until 12/31/15.
-They will allow Southwest companion pass holders to match to Mosaic. The Southwest companion pass allows you to bring a companion on all of your flights for free and it can be earned from opening and spending on the Southwest credit card. It can even be earned by transferring Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt and then from Hyatt to Southwest.  See here for the other statuses that can be matched.
-Elites that match can also keep their status until 12/31/15 by completing the same $1,250 90 day challenge.

Mosaic gets you:
-Free flight changes and cancellations for you and everyone flying with you.
-2 free checked bags for you and everyone flying with you.
-Expedited security line access.
-Early boarding
-Dedicated Customer Service Line

Some bloggers are saying that non-elites get Mosaic elite benefits during the 90 day challenge.  It doesn’t say that anywhere and JetBlue confirmed to me via Twitter that that is incorrect.

There isn’t really a hard rule about whether programs grant benefits during a challenge period. For example United and Hyatt do while Starwood does not.  Delta gives most benefits during the challenge period but does not offer lounge access during the challenge period.  However most other programs only allow other elites to do a challenge or match.  American is an exception in that they allow you to pay for a challenge, though they generally won’t confer benefits until you complete the flying challenge.

ShopRunner Free For A Year…Or Life

ShopRunner is the sad step-sister of Amazon Prime offering free 2 day shipping from lots of smaller stores, none nearly as useful as Amazon. I wind up using Prime every week but have only used shoprunner a handful of times. I wouldn’t pay for it, but hey, free is free.

ShopRunner is offering Amazon Prime users a free year of service, normally $79.

Then again they already offer Free Shoprunner For Life With American Express, and you’re no DansDealer if you don’t have an AMEX!

Amazon Prime Going Up From $79 To $99 Per Year

The cost of Amazon Prime will go up from $79 to $99 on March 20th for new enrollees.  Amazon had said previously to stockholders that they would hike it to as much as $119, which I said at the time would be a real stretch to pull off. Luckily that didn’t happen.

The student rate will go up from $39 to $49.

Amazon will seemingly still allow you to share Amazon Prime between 5 relatives even at different addresses. Amazon Student can’t be shared.

You can lock in the $39 student/$79 rate for your first year by starting a:
-Free Prime Trial
-Free Prime Trial for Amazon Mom
-Free Prime Trial for Amazon Student.

For existing members the new rate will go into effect on April 17th.  If your renewal is after that point you’ll be paying the new $49 student/$99 rate.  Some people have been emailed that they will be able to renew one last time later in 2014 at the lower rate, so there’s some confusion there still.

Prime members get:
-FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items
-No minimum order size
-Unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime Instant Video
-Read free books each month through Kindle First and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library

Will you be renewing for $99 instead of $79 later this year? Hit the comments!
