Hong Kong is a fascinating East meets West city and is home to several great kosher restaurants and shuls. Mul Hayam restaurant, located next to the Kehilat Zion shul in the Kowloon section of Hong Kong, is excellent. The JCC located on Hong Kong Island has very good dairy and meat restaurants as well as an awesome Sunday night all you can eat buffet, just don’t forget to bring your passport to get in! Chabad of Lantau also offers meals with delivery options.

We spent a Shabbos with Chabad of Hong Kong Island where the food was excellent and the atmosphere is awesome. People have rave reviews about Shabbos at Kehilat Zion as well.

After Shabbos we moved the W in Kowloon, which is one of my favorite SPG hotels in the world. We got an amazing upgrade and there’s a very cool rooftop infinity pool and hot tub. Plus the bellhop picked up our bags from our room and checked them straight home to Cleveland without us ever having to touch them thanks to the airport express station located in the W’s basement.

There are lots of other great hotels where you can spend your points at as well.

Most hotels even give you a free cell phone to use while in Hong Kong.

Americans do not need a visa to travel to Hong Kong or to take the ferry from Hong Kong to nearby Macau.

Last Chance For Hilton American Express 100K and 75K Limited Time Offers

Update: These offers are no longer available.

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.

-Until May 4th, The Hilton HHonors™ Surpass® Card from American Express is offering 100K points for spending $3,000 within 3 months.  It offers 12 points per dollar for spending at Hilton, 6 points per dollar at supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, and 3 points per dollar elsewhere. The bonus is valid if you haven’t had this particular Hilton AMEX before.

It has a $75 annual fee and gives Gold elite status for as long as you’re a cardholder, which gets you free breakfast, including the most over-the-top breakfast I’ve had in my life at the Waldorf Jerusalem.  If you spend $40K/year you’ll get top-tier Diamond status, which gets confirmed room upgrades and space available suite upgrade at hotels like the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem. You’ll also get discounted 4 night award stays and the 5th night free on award stays.

-Until May 4th, The Hilton HHonors™ Card from American Express is offering 75K points for spending $1,000 within 3 months.  It offers 7 points per dollar for spending at Hilton, 5 points per dollar at supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, and 3 points per dollar elsewhere. The bonus is valid if you haven’t had this particular Hilton AMEX before.

It has no annual fee and offers Silver status for as long as you are a cardmember. You’ll also get discounted 4 night award stays and the 5th night free on award stays. If you spend $20K on the card you’ll also get Hilton Gold status.

-There’s no limited time offer for the Citi Hilton Reserve card, but it’s a great card as it gives 2 free nights at any Hilton in the world when you spend $2,500 in 4 months, including the excellent Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem, the Conrad Maldives, the Grand Wailea Maui, or the Hilton Bora Bora Nui. The bonus is valid if you haven’t had this particular Citi Hilton card in the past 24 months.

It offers 10 points per dollar for spending at Hilton, 5 points per dollar on airline and car rental spending, and 3 points per dollar elsewhere.

It has a $95 annual fee and gives Gold elite status for as long as you’re a cardholder. You’ll get the 5th night free on award stays.  You’ll also get an additional free night for spending $10K in a calendar year. This card has a $95 annual fee.

The Hilton award chart can be found here.

Rooms range from 5K to 95K points per night depending on which of the 10 categories it falls into. If you have any Hilton credit card you’ll have elite status which also get the 5th award night for free. There are also point and money awards which are a great way to stretch your points, though those awards are capacity controlled.

As long as a standard room is for sale you can use points for the room without capacity controls or blackout dates.

The awesome Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem is a category 9 property requiring 80K points per night. As a Hilton cardholder the 5th award night is free, so the cost for a 5 night stay is 320K points or effectively 64K points per night.

Alternatively, AMEX Hilton cardholders can also book discounted 4 night award stays as follows:
Category 5: 130,000 points
Category 6: 160,000 points
Category 7: 190,000 points
Category 8: 220,000 points
Category 9: 260,000 points
Category 10: 300,000 points

These discounted 4 night awards are called AXON awards and can only be booked over the phone (800-920-5649), but will have the same availability as regular awards.

Hilton is a tough currency to love due to the high point requirements, but we absolutely loved our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem last year and hope to stay there again. These limited time offers are all some of the richest that have ever been offered for these cards.

At the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem we were treated to a fantastic daily breakfast, which is free for Hilton Gold and Diamond members. There is a mind-boggling quantity of awesome kosher food there, from dozens of daily hot dishes to hard cheeses, fresh fruits and pastries to fresh squeezed juices, as well as on-demand dishes like french toast, pancakes, waffles, and eggs. Unlimited wine, hot or cold chocolate drinks, and espresso drinks are included as well!

Gold and Diamond members get upgrades, food and drink amenities, late checkout, and other great benefits. Their Friday night Shabbos meals are pricey, but are well worth the expense (DDFers agree with that take as well), and the in-house restaurants are excellent as well.

With a breakfast like this, you may not even be hungry for dinner…

Many, many more pictures when I get around to writing the trip report 😉

If you need more points for a discounted 4 night or 5 night stay you can also buy Hilton points at half price through June 3rd here.

You can purchase anywhere from 2K points for $10 to 160K points for $800, effectively 0.5 cents per point. If you need more points you can open additional Hilton accounts in your name and then combine the accounts by clicking here.

In other words if you have 240K Hilton points you could spend 3 nights in the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem. With this deal you can buy an additional 20K points for $100 and have enough points for a 4 night stay for AMEX cardholders. Or you can buy an additional 80K points for $400 and have enough points for a 5 night stay if you are a Hilton cardholder or elite.

Even if you don’t have any points in can make sense to buy points.

The Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem rooms range from $450-$650 per night (plus 18% VAT for locals). If you were to buy 80K points at 0.5 cents each that would make the effective cost per night $400.  If you have a Hilton AMEX you can stay for 4 nights for 260K points (65K points per night) that would make the effective cost per night $325. If you have Hilton elite status (it’s free with any Hilton card) they you can get the 5th award night for free, so 320K points (64K points per night) at the sale price of 0.5 cents each would make the effective cost per night just $320. No tax is owed on award stays.

Or for example a top-tier category 10 hotel like the Conrad Maldives goes for $700-$1,000 per night. It costs 95K points per night ($475/night with this sale), 300K points for 4 nights for Hilton AMEX cardholders ($375/night with this sale), or 380K points for 5 nights for Hilton elites ($380/night with this sale).

Do you have any Hilton cards or do you have plans to take advantage of these limited time offers? Which aspirational hotel do you have your eyes set on? Hit the comments!

Daily Getaway For 5/2: Avis Rental Certificates And Chairman’s Status

With Daily Getaways you can purchase discounted travel packages, but you have to be really quick.  At 1pm EDT every weekday from now through 5/4 there is a new offering. The best deals will sell out in seconds, so you need to be waiting on the page at 12:59pm and refreshing the page.

Avis has 2 packages for sale today:

1. One day premium car rental vouchers for $30.

2. Chairman’s status for $1,115

-The vouchers are a mixed bag. I’ve used them in the past on trips to Vancouver and Banff when paid rates were nearly $100 per day where the value has been excellent. However I’ve also run into blackout dates and Avis doesn’t publish their blackout dates. You need to call to make a reservation with the coupon to find out if your dates are blacked out. The vouchers are valid in the US and Canada for rentals through 5/31/17, however they are not valid in the NYC metro area. You won’t pay percentage based taxes, but you do pay daily rental car surcharges that vary at airport locations. You can reserve up to a premium (group G car). Using a voucher likely means that you forfeit your credit card CDW insurance, therefore I only hand in the voucher at the end of the rental assuming no damage was done. It’s a bit of a pain and requires that you allow extra time when returning a car. You can use up to 7 vouchers on a rental and you can buy up to 7 vouchers per order/credit card from Daily Getaways. In summary, buy these with your eyes wide open, you may get an incredible value or you may get burned.

-Chairman’s status is amazing. You can get cars delivered and picked up from your house for free and you get driven back to the terminal when returning cars to the airport. Oddly though they don’t typically drop off your car to the terminal. Upgrades from intermediate to luxury cars are free, though specialty cars are excluded from the upgrade pool. You pay market rate for gas. Is that worth $1,115 for just 12 months of service? Unless you rent cars extremely frequently you would be much better off just paying for upgrades or using Silvercar where available. The status expires 5/31/17.

Get 1 Year Of Starbucks Gold Status With Any Purchase

Update: This offer has been extended through 5/12!

Originally posted on 4/12:

Get 1 Year Of Starbucks Gold Status With Any Purchase

Don’t have a Starbucks Rewards card? You can signup with my referral link here.

Starbucks is launching their new revenue based program today. In the past Gold members got a free drink after 12 purchases, but apparently that was too gameable. Gold members will now get a free drink for every 125 stars earned and you’ll get 2 stars per dollar spent. That means a free drink for every $62.50 spent, though on monthly double star days Gold member purchases will earn 4 stars per dollar.

With the new program you need to earn 300 stars in a year (in other words spend $150 in a year) to earn or retain Gold status, but if you make a single purchase by May 2nd you’ll automatically get 1 year of Gold status. Your status will be upgraded to Gold within 48 hours of making a purchase. You’ll then qualify for a shiny Gold card that you’ll never use because the app is far more convenient. But you’ll also qualify for monthly double star days and free drinks for every 125 stars earned.

Existing gold members making a purchase by May 2nd will have their status extended by 1 year.

“Eligible transactions are those that earn Stars—any purchase made with your Starbucks App or registered Card at Starbucks, Teavana or Evolution Fresh. Taxes, tips, fees, alcohol, donations or any card-to-card transactions may be excluded. Entering a Star Code from a grocery purchase is also considered an eligible transaction.”

Surviving the devaluation: All Starbucks members still get a free drink for their birthday.

Get A 30% Bonus When You Transfer American Express Membership Rewards Points To Etihad

Offer expires 6/15/16.

Etihad miles expire 24 months after they were earned.

Etihad awards have nominal fuel surcharges and are bookable online. For example you can fly from JFK-Abu Dhabi in an Etihad First Class Apartment with on-board shower for 235,112 miles or about 180,855 AMEX points round-trip.

Partner award charts can be found here and are much more lucrative, but partner awards are not bookable online, which means you have to play call center roulette. You also need to book partner awards 14 days in advance.

-You can fly from Brussels-Tel Aviv in business for 20,160 miles or about or about 15,508 AMEX points round-trip.

-The American award chart can be found here. There are no fuel surcharges and the off-peak dates are far more generous than when booking American awards with American miles.
-You can fly from the US to Hawaii in coach between January 12–March 8 or August 22-December 15 for 35K miles or about 26,923 AMEX points round-trip.

-You can fly from JFK to Tokyo or Seoul in coach between October 1 – April 30 for 50K miles or about 38,462 AMEX points round-trip.

Post what other great deals you find!

-Trip Notes Brazil Part 3: Iguaçu Falls (Published 4/17/16)

-This trip occurred in October 2014, better late than never, right? I posted that Brazil was waiving their $160 Visa fee for Americans that arrive between June 1-September 18, so that was the impetus to continue writing these trip notes. Argentina is now also waiving their $160 reciprocity fee for US citizens, making this an amazing time to visit both countries thanks to $320 in reciprocity savings and hassles! Read the CDC travel notice about Zika here before booking travel to Latin America.

I explored Rio in 2005 at the end of a year of teaching in Brazil, and was stunned by the beauty of the city.

Landing in Rio, circa my 2005 trip:

And it was in Rio as a 20 year old that I took an exhilarating leap of faith on a hang-glider…

…and ran off of this ramp, full speed ahead:

It felt totally surreal, but it was a truly unforgettable experience.

9 years later on a Tuesday evening I flew with my wife and 2 kids on an uneventful GOL flight nonstop from Foz do Iguaçu to Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão airport. The flight from Sao Paulo to Iguaçu and Iguaçu to Rio was pricing out at $720, so I happily paid 25K Delta miles for the flights. The kids both flew free due to a promotion that GOL was running on their Portuguese language site only. It often has specials not found on their English language site.

-6 Fairmont Ovation Collection C Certificates: $1,800

The 6 nights in Hawaii certificates are actually good for any Fairmont Collection A, B, or C hotel, so you can also use them at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Vancouver, voted the best hotel in Canada. Or you can use them at Fairmont Mayakoba, half an hour south of Cancun among dozens of other hotels. Mind you, the Kea Lani Maui isn’t a bad redemption either 😀

The 3 nights in Scottsdale certificates can be used for any Fairmont Collection A or B hotel. That means you can also use them at the picturesque Fairmont Banff Springs or Chateau Lake Loiuse among dozens of other options.

You can view all of the Fairmont collection hotels by category here.

They can be used anywhere from 1 at a time to all in one stay and you get free breakfast for 2 every day as well. The certificates never expire.
