Returned Merchandise - AA Mile Clawback

I made a large purchase on my AA Citi card and the miles have already posted to AA. I now need to return the merchandise. Does Citi take back the miles from AA, or does Citi maintain a negative miles balance - preventing new miles from posting to AA from new purchases?

I actually am hoping they take the miles back from AA because I want to cancel the card and not put more spend on it. But I also don't want them charging me for the miles when I close the account.

Don't know about citi, but in my experience with Chase, if you don't have a balance next month, they don't take back the points or charge you for it.

But citi hates customers, is what I gather from reading DDF for the month or so that I have been following it.

Chase CO and UA definitely do clawback miles.

This may be a good time to change the card to a non aa card and keep the miles....

What if I bought a big item and the statement hit and miles posted before I returned it.
