Amex Food & Wine offer bogus
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:48:24 PM »
By now probably most people here are familiar with those annoying offers that Amex sends out every once in awhile, trying to get you to mistakenly sign up for Food & Wine magazine.
They are probably most associated with the "Million dollar Sweepstakes".

I'm surprised that a company such as Amex resorts to these sly and dirty games, but that's besides the point.

The point is I recently got another offer from them in the mail which includes the following:

2 Issues of Food & Wine "along with a FREE multi-mode digital camera"
If I don't call to cancel I'll get charged $19.95 for 12 more issues, and if I cancel I keep the camera and the 2 issues and end up paying just the $2.99

What's the catch here?

I mean even with paying the $19.95 how bad can the camera be to not be worth it or maybe a small loss?

Am I missing something here?

About 1/4th of a megapixel. Less resolution than a 5 year old phone
I mean just the name "multi-mode digital camera" screams fraud

I keep getting these offers for 2 $100 restaurant GC. Has anyone gone here gone for them? are they worth anything?

In general, whenever I see mail from American express Publishing, it goes right into the garbage.

It makes sense- one person forgets to cancel/decides to keep the mag, and that pays for ALL the cameras they send out
Lol

that's why its such a junky and low way of getting money, and yet AMEX does it...

If it goes right in the trash, how do you know what the offer is (or is it printed outside of the envelope)?

I also got a letter from Food and wine that stated I had to pay for my subscription....which I never subscribed to. I called to cancel. Has anyone else been getting these statements?

Yup.

hmmmm maybe he opens it and then throws it out, while taking a quick peek...

That's what I used to do years ago, but every time I read  the terms of the offers from AMEX Publishing, I found nothing special there. Thankfully AMEX puts the words Publishing on the outside of the envelope so I know I can forward the mail to its rightful destination...
