December 2010/January 2011 Trip Planning Thread.
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:40:00 AM »
With 5 continents checked off my list I think it's about time to go down under!

The dates for this trip have to fall between 12/19-01/16.

I can't find anything with Star Alliance for now.

Here's what I have on hold with AA for a whopping 205K (135K US-Asia 2 in F+70K Asia 2-South Pacific in J):
We 12/29 CX 827, YYZ-HKG, 2:15pm-7:00pm+1, First.
Su 01/02 QF 68, HKG-PER, 11:25pm-7:15am+1, Business.
Mo 01/03 QF 648, PER-MEL, 11:30pm-6:05am+1, Business.
Th 01/13 QF 401, SYD-MEL, 6:00am-7:35am, Business.
Th 01/13 CX 134, MEL-HKG, 8:50am-3:05pm, Business.
Th 01/13 CX 826, HKG-YYZ, 4:35pm-6:25pm, First.

Obviously far from ideal.  It's a lot of miles, but tickets are tricky to aussieland.
I'd prefer to depart from CLE, not YYZ but good luck making that happen with OW.  I'd rather find a better way from HKG-MEL without it taking 2 days...etc.

If anyone has any better ideas I'm all ears!

squeezing in a visit to the koisel before and after aussie, will greatly reduce the numbers.

whether finally worth it or not, Im not sure.

How so? AA doesn't allow stopovers, which is why this ticket is priced as 2 tickets (135K+70K)

Another possible option someone suggested was something like this.  It would cost 135K AA+90K CO.
The problem is the long overnight in HKG after the Virgin Atlantic flight.  There's also just 1 week in Australia with this itin, but I do get to go to HKG and SIN.

We 12/29 CX 827, YYZ-HKG, 2:15pm-7:00pm+1, First.
Su 01/02 SQ 871, HKG-SIN, 7:55pm-11:45pm, Business.
Tu 01/04 SQ 237, SIN-MEL, 11:45pm-10:10am+1, Business.
We 01/12 VS 201, SYD-HKG, 3:45pm-10:00pm, Business.
Th 01/13 CX 826, HKG-YYZ, 4:35pm-6:25pm, First.

Alternatively I suppose I could do
Th 01/13 VS 201, SYD-HKG, 3:45pm-10:00pm, Business.
Fr 01/14 CX 826, HKG-YYZ, 10:45am-12:35pm, First.

But it's a little risky with shabbos starting at 4:48pm and I'd have to spend shabbos in Toronto.

There is availability in Business flying from CGK (Jakarta) on Sunday @ 20:40. Its gets into Melbourne @ 11:05 Mon.
The question is wheather you can get seats HGK-CGK. It looks like CX has 3 flights, the 9:30am-1:15pm and the 4:15pm-8:00pm will both do the trick but you have to check if there is availability.
Its an extra flight but it gets you in earlier....

Looks like CX only has the 930am flight available which kind've kills the day in HKG and makes for a very long layover in Jakarta...
It's a nice find though, I'll keep it in mind if nothing else comes up.

I would try and avoid Jakarta if possible. It's a rather extremist place.

Like the fact that they dont officially recognize Judaism.
But if DXB is fine, is this so much worse?

Yes it is. DXB doesn't want official acts of terror going on, its bad for business.

Is inside an airport a worry for a terrorist attack? I thought you were referring to the unfriendliness to Jews that may exist.

Both. A quick connection should be ok but I wouldnt want to spend more than an hour or two there if I didnt need to.

I agree.
Even if nothing actually happens, those looks you get (presuming you look outwardly Jewish, as the OP does) definitely dont give you a sense of security.

Jakarta is practically the only city in Southeast Asia that I would definitely avoid. Bali is fine because its all secular. I still haven't figured out why there is no Chabad there yet. There are tons of Jews to be M'karev there

I'll raise some money for you to open it. At least do a summer shlichus there or a Pesach Seder. Think of all of the Frei Yidden from Perth and Melbourne that we can be M'karev!

Damax, don't you think a chabad house in a Spa resort would attract more people?  ;-)
