Singapore Master Thread
« on: July 11, 2010, 06:49:21 AM »
Hey fellow DDers. I'll be in Singapore BEZ"H for the weekend in a few weeks. I had someone get in touch with the Rabbi there who said they have an annex building available for Jewish tourists but it will be taken the Shabbos I'll be there. I cannot get back in touch with the guy who was helping me so I don't know where to turn now. I'm getting there Thursday afternoon and leaving Sunday morning. Additionally, on my way back to TLV I'll be stopping in SIN for 6 hours.

If anyone can comment on what my possible options are for Shabbos over there, and if you know addresses/phone numbers to local restaurants (I heard there's at least one) and the Chabad, I would appreciate all that info.

Lastly, if you know of any "you-don't-want-to-miss-this-sight" in Singapore that you would recommend I do while I'm there for a day, please share.

Thanks guys (and gals).
-Eli

http://www.singaporejews.org/travel-info/hospitality-faqs.html

Singapore is a pretty small place so almost every hotel is within walking distance of the Jewish Center. Don't forget to bring your passport the first time, security there is very high!

Places to check out while you are there:

Sentosa Island
Marina Bay Sands Casino (check out which shows are on at the time)
Wildlife Park & Night Safari
Shopping on Orchard Road
Ferry to Batam Island, Indonesia
Worlds first Kosher (Cholov Yisroel) Coffee Bean
Boat Ride around the harbor

Thanks guys. I'll look into it. Right now my contact is trying to find me a house to stay in, and he told me the meals there are $50 USD for Fri night and Shabbos day. Like you said, damax, it looks like there are 20 hotels within a 90 second walk of the Shul.

Anyone have a place for me to stay?

How are you getting from SIN-KUL?
Does Continental allow 2 stopovers as well as an open-jaw?

St. Regis is majestic but its a bit of a walk.

All of the hotels are nice there. Take your pick!

From SIN I'm travelling to LGK for 5 days and then to KUL on Air Asia (paid flight - economy)

My stopover is Sydney and my destination is Christchurch. The rest are under-24-hour connections.

"A bit of a walk" like more than 90 seconds, or "a bit of a walk" like 40 minutes?

Seems like 40 minutes according to Google Maps:

And the Sheraton Towers Singapore where I can get for 4,000 + $60 is a 40 minutes walk also. I'd rather stay close and not get upgraded...I think...no?

If walking in Miami in Aug or Tel Aviv in Aug doesnt bother you then 2x it and you got SIN thats besides the rain that you can get hit with. We ended up CXing our trip but we were looking to stay as close to the shul and meal area as possible

It will be hot, but the rain there only lasts a few minutes and then it's sunny again

I don't know if it's worthwhile to go back twice to the zoo. Might just want to pick one of them
