We went to SD this past summer. Stayed in the SD mission valley hotel (cat 3-stay 4 nights get the fifth free). Its pretty much smack in the middle of everything. Its right next to an expressway so try to get a room on on the far side of the hotel so you dont hear the noise (I dont know how bad it is with the noise, because we were on the far side of the hotel). There was a $14(?) parking fee per day which they waived for me. (dont expect it-she did it because she was jewish and i was gonna park on the street all the way down the block over shabbos) There is some street parking, but very little. We liked the hotel overall. They charge for internet as well but i just tethered to my blackberry. We have gold status and i managed to get an upgrade to a penthouse suite for the 5 days we were there.

We were with my 1 year old so we couldnt do everything we would have wanted to...

Some of the things we did: the zoo, seaworld, horse racing @ Del Mar racetrack, la jolla cove, went hiking in Torrey Pines State Beach and Park, rented a boat from http://www.seaforthboatrental.com. The zoo was pretty dumb IMO. Same as any other zoo and pretty hilly. If we did it again, id probably go the wild animal park instead of the zoo.

There are a few restaurants...nothing crazy though. You can google them and see their menus. We went to "The Place" (both meat and dairy) and Orly’s café.

It used to be, but it's far too dangerous today.

As long as you don't mind becoming a statistic in the horrific drug wars currently being fought in that city.

Forget the danger part. It is a total waste of time and money.

We walked to tijuana, in summer 08, when you cross in they don't ask for passports or anything, and we were there for like 2 hours (didn't go to avienda revoulucion) and then we went back, the line back to us was like 1-1/2 hours litterly wait time, but it was an interesting expierience!

Just got back from san diego. Stayed in hilton in mission valley. nice place, booked on priceline for cheap. across the street from shopping center including target and coffee bean. went to many of the attractions. sea world is fantastic. loved the zoo, but not so much wild animal park. tijuana is not much fun, aside from the safety issues. its very sleazy and we spent a couple hours there. instead go to old town in san diego and u can buy the same stuff without the creepiness. currently theres only one restaurant (the place, fleishigs) though i hear there may be others soon. la jolla cove is cute and free.

San Diego for Pesach
« Reply #11 on: February 24, 2010, 11:46:03 PM »
I'm gonna be in San Diego for Pesach on a program there.  Other than food (which isn't relevant) what should I be doing with the family (wife, 2 year old, and 2 month old) or some of the family?

I've done the run of the mill SeaWorld, Zoo, Wild Animal Park.
Anything interesting and different? Kid oriented? Not kid oriented?
We've got a car.
I know without food as an event, most yidden are stuck.  But c'mon, someone here has got to have something interesting.

I'm game if you've got ideas.

Legoland is definitely worth doing. Go check out the seals at La Jolla Cove. If you like baseball you can take a tour of petco park.

The new Children's Museum downtown is great.

Balboa Park is really nice too and there is a lot more to do there than the Zoo.  There are a couple of great parks with playscapes (one on Park Blvd and one on 6th Ave (both walkable from the Zoo).  There's also a children's play area inside the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center which is a lot of fun for kids of that age (my daughter is the same age).

Beaches and the communities of Coronado and La Jolla are great for kids too.

San Diego Tomorrow!
« Reply #16 on: May 10, 2010, 11:35:05 AM »
Mrs. EliteFlyer and myself just booked in 2 tickets JFK-SAN for tomorrow morning through Wednesday night for $82 all in.

Now, we need to find a good deal with Priceline, Hyatt, or SPG for accommodations. We presently have a Chabad rate at enterprise for about $40.

Any suggestions for places to go,eat stay?

Thanks All! Safe travels! :)

Have fun, that is awsome.  How did pull off such a good rate?  I recommend going to the kosher takeout in the Rogers in La Jolla.  Its not bad, and they make decent sandwiches and sushi.  No real sit down though.  In general, SD is not really known for the food.  Drive 1.5 hours to LA to get some real good food!

SeaWorld is awsome, I found some great deals on craigslist in San Diago.  Also you have to go to the La Jolla Cove to walk around and the "Children's pool" nearby, (not really a childrens pool its just a name) go in at dusk and you will see tons of seals and sealions.

There is a nice hyatt downtown.

San Diago is awsome have fun.  Let me know if you have any questions.
