I didn’t think I would really care to stay connected while flying, but it really is quite nice and a great way to pass the time.

I’m posting from 28,000 feet in the air on an Airtran flight (free upgrade on a $29 coach ticket to business class, of course) from Akron, OH to LaGuardia.

I was able to connect to the Go-Go internet on the ground, but it only started working once the flight passed 10,000 feet.

The speeds are slightly slower than the last Airtran flight that I was on, it’s running at about 1 mbps down and 350 kbps up.

At a regular price of $9.95 I’m not sure who would pay for 45 minutes of slowish wi-fi, but as long as GoGo keeps on giving it out for free then I’ll keep on using it!

Many people have noticed that the site has been loading extremely slowly over the past month.  This was mostly due to increased traffic (which is always a good problem to have!) which was causing my previous host, Bluehost, to slow down or even not allow the loading of dansdeals.com.  This was also due to a new throttling process that Bluehost instituted for high-traffic websites, and because of it I can no longer recommend using them as a webhost.

Eli, the creator of the Dansdeals Forums has single-handedly done all of the legwork moving the website onto a faster host that he recommended, 1and1.com. The tests that I’ve run show that the site is now loading up to 90% faster than it used to-Thanks Eli!

Clarification: This deal is basically only good on non-stop flights, and is best on short-haul flights.  It only works on round-trip flights.  Go to the comments to read an example for how to calculate the pricing of a stop flight and why this isn’t a good way to get from JFK to Tel Aviv.

Note: Starwood Starpoints transfer into LAN kilometers at a 1:2 ratio.  If you transfer 20,000 Starpoints you will get 50,000 LAN kilometers due to the doubling of the 5,000 point bonus that’s awarded with every 20,000 Starpoint transfer into miles!
You can also use 60,000 Starpoints with Starwood’s “Nights & Flights” option for 5 nights in a category 3 hotel and 100,000 LAN kilometers.
I have personally done and can confirm that both of these transfer options work, although it does take a couple weeks for the transfer to complete.

LAN has made some major changes to their OneWorld award chart.  They now charge a set amount of miles for each flight segment, which makes connecting flights cost significantly more kilometers than it did with the old chart.  At the same time there some new bargains especially on short-haul nonstops that can be found with the new chart.
