T-Mobile is increasing the cost of going over your plan minutes to 40 or 45 cents per minute effective 09/01.  The exact changes for your plan will be sent out in your next cell phone bill.  You have 30 days from the date of receiving notice that this cost is rising to cancel your plan for free.

According to T-Mobile terms and condition there is no way to simply cancel your contract, you must terminate your service and you will not be liable for the ETF.

Even if you have never gone over your minutes in the past you still have the right to cancel your plan as you may go over your plan minutes in the future and T-Mobile is unilaterally modifying your contract in a materially adverse way.

It may take a few phone calls to customer service, but you should be able to find a rep to let you out of your plan for free.  If not you can always write to T-Mobile saying that you do not accept the new terms and you wish to end your contract.

If you want to port your number out of T-Mobile be sure to tell the rep this before canceling service so that they can notate your account to waive the ETF upon completion of porting your number to another carrier. If you cancel your plan before porting your number out of T-Mobile you may not be able to get your number back.

If you try to cancel be sure to let us know what happens!

Effective 07/30 you will no longer pay any expedite fees on United when booking or changing an award ticket!

Expedite fees originated in an era when paper tickets were the norm, and booking an award ticket close to the date of departure had real fees (overnight delivery, etc.) for the airline.

However as the airlines migrated to e-tickets the award expedite fees have stayed and even grown to as high as $150 on Delta.

United charged as much as $100 to book an award ticket within 21 days of departure or to change an existing award ticket to a flight to within 21 days.

What’s really nice about this change is that many airlines now only open up mileage seats at the last minute when they see that the seats won’t be sold and when they will reap an expedite fee.

Hopefully the other major airlines will go ahead on match United in eliminating expedite fees.

Here is a chart that I previously made before this change on expedite fees, based on how many days before departure the mileage ticket is booked (No airline charges an expedite fee for tickets booked 21+ days before departure, USAirways offers a $25 online discount through 08/12 and is the only domestic airline to still charge a fuel surcharge to all US originating award flights) :

Yes there are tons of other great uses for Google Voice, but this one is pretty neat…I’ll definitely be trying it out when I go to Israel next month!

Canadians rejoice-You too can collect Starwood points via credit card spending, plus there is no annual fee for the Canadian Starwood credit card.

The Canadian version of the Starwood credit card is a Mastercard and offers 5,000 Starpoints after your first purchase.

You earn 1 Starpoint for every 2 Canadian dollars spent, and there are threshold spend bonuses. You get a bonus 5,000 Starpoints for every $10,000 CAD in spending, up to 15,000 Starpoints for threshold spending annually.

You will also get a bonus 5,000 Starpoints after your first stay in a Starwood hotel. (Would be interesting to know if a purchase from the hotel bar would qualify as well…)

Besides for the obvious appeal of being able to transfer Starpoints into miles of dozens of airlines at favorable ratios, there are also some great values at Canadian hotels.

Take the Westin Harbour Castle in downtown Toronto.  (Side note: I have the best memories of this hotel as a 10 year old getting the autographs of the ‘95 World Series bound Indians that I described a couple years ago in a post titled “Manny being Manny.” I believe that most visiting teams still stay at this hotel)  A random date check (06/07) on spg.com shows a rate of $279. Using points, which have no capacity controls, it is available for 7,000 Starpoints, or a value of about 4 cents per Starpoint.  Better yet, it is also available using Cash & Points for just 2,800 Starpoints and $45, or a value of a whopping 8.4 cents per Starpoint!  It would take a solid Nights & Flights Starpoint redemption to beat that kind of valuation!
