Remember that with the Starwood Consumer AMEX you get a bonus 15,000 Starpoints for spending $15,000 within 6 months, in addition to the 10,000 Starpoint bonus after the 1st purchase with the card. This is a great way to reach that limit. The DOJ has just approved the Delta-Northwest merger, which will create the world’s largest airline, leapfrogging United and AA.

What’s this mean for you?

-Northwest miles will be merged into Delta Skymiles accounts.

-Superfluous hubs such as Delta’s Cincinnati and Northwest’s Memphis will in all likelihood lose their hub status.

-Continental is now guaranteed the right to leave Skyteam.  Their entrance to Star Alliance will happen in late 2009.

-Elites on Delta and Northwest will now have reciprocal upgrade rights.

-If you want to use Continental miles for Skyteam travel or Skyteam miles for Continental travel, the time to do so is now.

-The Continental/Northwest reciprocal upgrade system will come to end very soon, perhaps by the end of 2008.

-Airfares will have less competitive pressure to come down.

-Skyteam mileage tickets, already the most difficult of all alliances, will get even harder with the loss of 2 airlines.

-Open battles between Delta and Northwest employees fighting for seniority.

-Glitches merging both of their subpar websites.

If you are a Onepass member and have a primary Continental credit/debit card saved to your profile the checked bag fee will be automatically waived for you and everyone traveling with you.  Otherwise you can just give your active credit card to the ticketing agent and they will waive the fee for you at the the airport.

Additionally, Scott O’Leary, the managing director of customer experience over at Continental, reports that even secondary cardholders will qualify for a free bag for them and all of their companions by showing a ticketing agent their Continental credit or debit card. However secondary cardholders will not be able to have the charge automatically waived by saving the card to their Onepass profile.

Major kudos goes out to Continental for figuring out a way to differentiate themselves and bring back free checked luggage for non-elite travelers!

So which credit card should you get? Continental has a travelbank credit card with no fee for 1 year and a $29 fee for subsequent years, it is definitely not worth using that card for spending, but it will pay for itself if you fly Continental at all. Also if you sign up for the regular $85/year credit card they will often waive the fee for you, and even if they won’t they can downgrade you to a no annual fee card that earns 1 mile per $2 spent. A horrible deal for spending to be sure, but a great card to hang onto if you ever fly on Continental and are not elite!

Update 2: I think the saying “pigs get fat, but hogs get slaughtered” applies here-I’ll take my winnings and head home on the 8:30 Continental flight. Then again if it wasn’t a holiday I would probably waste the day away in the airport.
Best of all? I’ll get double elite flight segment points on Continental because I was rebooked on a full fare Y ticket, which will push me over the elite requalification line for 2009! It’s the first time I’ve ever become elite based on elite flight segment points (30 this year).

Update: Bumpity bumpity…Just got bumped off my next United flight to Cleveland. The calls for free tickets echoing across the terminals at O’ Hare today were quite the contrast from Continental where their revenue management has been boiled down to a science and bumps are quite rare.
I could keep playing this game all day long, but tonight is a jewish holiday and I do need to get home at some point…
So I’m now holding 2 tickets, 1 on an 8:30am CDT flight on Continental and a 10:30am flight on United in first class that I can probably get bumped off of as well, but the next flight wouldn’t be until 12:10 on Continental…quite the dilemma

So I just got bumped while flying United from Chicago to Cleveland last night.  I love the media stories of the horrors of getting bumped…With a free hotel room, a confirmed first class seat and a free future flight what else could I do?!?
