Some post division-series victory ramblings…

Sorry Yankee fans, but your season (and era???) is done!

Your $216M payroll couldn’t defeat a team with a payroll less than a third of that.

The NY Times has perhaps the quote of the series,

“Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro, who should be the executive of the year for the impressive way he has made Cleveland a division champion, put the economic difference between his team and the Yankees in context Friday.

“They had a $20 million pinch-hitter last night,” he said, referring to Jason Giambi. “That’s a third of our team.”

Commenters on the “Golden Ticket” thread: Remember what I said about Sabathia, Carmona, and our 2 Raffi’s?

Sorry Nooch-That subway series will just have to wait!

The Indians take on the Red Sox for the American League Championship this Friday.

One Million Hits Flash Promo!

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Update: No firm commitments, but depending on the game, I may be able to give more than 1 ticket to the winner if necessary…the details will be worked out later.

As the counter draws to within hundreds from the milestone-It’s time to let the games begin!

I have temporarily relocated the hit counter to the top of the sidebar.

Email me a screenshot of the 1,000,000th hit and you’ll be invited to join me (and others) at Jacobs Field to watch the Indians battle the Yankees for game 5 of the American League Division Series. If the Indians beat the Yankees before game 5 (the Yankees cannot beat the Indians before game 5) then you will be invited to come to an American League Championship Series game at the Jake, which will most likely be versus the Red Sox.

A screenshot of the 999,999th hit will win you an XM satelite radio/MP3 player.

A screenshot of the 1,000,001st hit will win you a Sandisk MP3 Player.

Making a screenshot is easy, just locate the “Print Screen/Prnt Scrn” button on your keyboard, you will probably need to use the FN or shift button together with it to capture the screen. Then just go into a basic program like Microsoft Paint which can be found on every PC and press Paste to paste the screen into Paint. Email me the screenshot along with your name and address to claim your prize!

Limit 1 prize per person.

In the event of an unclaimed prize the grand prize will go to the 999,999th hit, and then to the 1,000,001st hit. The subsequent remaining prizes would be forfeited. Trades are allowed among the 3 winners, but only if all affected parties agree to the trade.

All prizes must be claimed by 11:59pm edt tonight.

Good Luck!

Starwood Airline Direct Deposit-How To Earn Continental And United Miles With Starwood…

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Starwood Airline Direct Deposit Linky

Chase Bank issues the United and Continental mileage credit cards.  As such they do not allow their respective affinity airlines to accept the transfer of Starwood points at 20,000 starpoints=25,000 miles like you can do on over 30 other airlines.

The reason is simple, who in their right minds would use an $85 Continental credit card to earn less Continental miles per dollar spent than you can earn using a $45 (and free for first year) Starwood card.

There is a workaround, but it is not a good one.

You can set up your Starwood account to automatically transfer your Starpoints into an airline at a 1:1 basis.

This works even for airlines such as United and Continental!

Mind you, there are so many better uses for Starpoints that doing this i almost criminal-but enough people ask about the Continental transfer that it’s worth the mention…

ESPN: Tribe Favored Over Yanks…

Indians-Yankees ALDS ESPN Page Linky

7 out of 10 experts picked the Indians over the Yankees to advance to the ALCS.

8 out of 10 said it will be a 5 game series…

Continental Airlines Tidbits…

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Continental has been one of the few major carriers to consistently turn a profit. They do so not with offshoring their calling centers (ahem, United) but by listening closely to what their frequent flyers have to say.

They still serve free meals on domestic flights, and all call centers are US based. Their airport clubs (Free access with AMEX Plat) are top-notch, offering free wi-fi and alcoholic beverages that most others charge for.

Continental’s Onepass mileage program has been getting more generous of late, and now only trails AA in terms of standard reward availability. It also contains bargains like 70,000 mile coach tickets/100,000 BusinessFirst tickets to Israel. Reward availability is even better for elite members.

Continental has a dedicated employee who takes the time to post online about new initiatives and program changes, and makes sure that any problems reported by flyers online are resolved.

The entire executive team spends a couple days every year meeting up with an online focus group of frequent flyers to discuss the issues and give them a behind the scenes look at the airline.

Odds and ends learned and various program changes that came out of this year’s meeting:

-Ability to standby on the day of departure for International BusinessFirst mileage upgrades. Until now this was only possible to/from Hawaii. They haven’t done this until now due to the fear of phantom bookings, and Continental said they will cancel the program if the system is abused…

-Addition of a million-mile elite club. This will be based on actual flown miles, like Delta and United. It will be retroactive for all previous flown miles.

-There are no current plans to “spin-off” the Onepass mileage program a la Air Canada.

-Mileage rates will be going up later this month for select routes…

-Continental will not have an economy-plus section like United’s.

-Continental will start filling middle seats from the back of the plane towards the front.

-Continental’s 787’s will be 9 seats across in a 3-3-3 configuration and a 17.5″ seat width.

-Continental plans to fly to Sydney at some point with the 787.

-Continental will open the first airline club in Las Vegas, in the 2nd quarter of 2008.

-Air France awards can now be booked online-more Skyteam partners to come.

-Airplane internet access is coming soon. VOIP will probably be blocked.

-You will soon be able to use part of an electronic travel certificate and keep the residual value.

-Priority standby for elites coming soon.

-US Airways exiting Pittsburgh was a major catalyst for the planned 40% expansion of the Cleveland hub.

Rumor: American Airlines Will Partner With El Al To Codeshare Tel Aviv Flights!

Monday, October 1st, 2007

The internet is abuzz with rumors of an upcoming announcement of an AA-El Al partnership.

El Al’s current codeshare agreement with Delta is ending due to Delta’s launching of non-stop JFK-TLV service that will directly compete with El Al.

The agreement would allow AA to sell AA-coded flights from the US to TLV.  Additionally it would allow for award redemptions and elite-qualifying miles to be earned on the carrier of your choice.

AA does not fly directly to TLV due to the threat of having their plane repossesed in TLV to pay off debt obligations that TWA left unpaid when they declared bankruptcy and were bought out by AA.

T-Mobile Rejecting Rebates?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Update: After filing a dispute over the phone, AMEX reversed the $30 charge for the Tmobile phone that I bought because they wouldn’t honor the $30 rebate! Good Luck!

Originally posted: 08/21
