AAdvantage Lifetime Platinum!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Well, I finally hit 2,000,000 AA miles which means that I now have lifetime Platinum status.

American Airlines is the only airline in the world that counts all earned miles towards million miler/lifetime elite status! Every other airline only counts actual flight miles to attain lifetime elite status.

I joined the AA program in 2002, hit 1,000,000/Lifetime Gold in 2007, and now have over 2,000,000 miles!

Between churning cards, a 14 flight/36 hour mileage run, and the alive and kicking US mint deal it was actually not so hard.

So, What’s in your wallet? :)

When you hit 1,000,000 you get 8 500-mile domestic upgrade stickers if you live in North America, or 4 one-way international upgrades certificates if you live outside North America.

When you hit 2,000,000 AA miles you get 4 one-way international upgrades regardless of where you live.

As the lifetime program is completely undocumented, it is liable to change at any time. There have been rumors for some time now that AA wants to go to actual flight miles for lifetime status, but lacks the technology to go back and see how every member actually earned their miles.

For now all miles earned, whether by flying, opening credit cards, or transfers from Starwood, count towards lifetime status. Even if you spend miles, your lifetime counter does not decrease.

You can check your own progress towards lifetime status on AA.com where it lists your total program miles to date.

I got a kick out of the first line of the congratulatory letter, “When you first became a million miler, you may not have thought about the next threshold…” Well they obviously don’t know their customer too well do they? ;)

AAdvantage Credit Card Reduced Mileage Awards For July-September 2009!!!

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Unfortunately AA/Citi has gutted this great program and no longer offers international destinations at the discounted rate.  Apparently from now on only domestic cities will be offered.  You can always call up the number on the back of your credit card to complain/threaten to cancel over the elimination of the discounted international destinations if you’d like them to know how you feel (or if you just want some mileage compensation…)

Q3 Reduced Mileage Awards Linky
Fly to select cities worldwide for 7,500 less miles than American Airlines regularly charges if you have the AAdvantage World Mastercard!

To book these awards just call AA’s AAdvantage desk at 800-882-8880 and reference the following award code:
7,500 miles off Coach: TD8X7A
7,500 miles off Business/First: UD21X2A

You may be able to avoid the $15 phone booking charge by first placing a reservation on hold at aa.com and then calling up AAdvantage to have them reduce the cost of the award by 7,500 miles and ask for the fee to waived since it was originally booked on their website.

Below is a sample list of some of Q2’s valid destinations, origination is allowed from any US48 City.
Open-jaws are permitted
(Note: You may be able to originate from any “destination” city and fly to any US48 city for the discounted rate simply by holding the ticket on aa.com and then referencing the award code above to an AAdvantage agent to get the required mileage reduced by 7,500.)
-NYC/LGA
-Cincinnati
-Columbus
-Atlanta
-Key West, FL
-Houston/IAH

US Mint Direct Ship Coins Linky

I received a shipment yesterday of $10,000 worth of coins from the US Mint!

When I first posted about the Mint deal last June there was a limit of $500 per President.  I wrote about my somewhat difficult experience depositing the coins in that post as well.

For those of you not familiar with the mint deal, you can buy coins at face value with free shipping and charge them to any credit card.

Since then I’ve switched to Chase bank where the tellers don’t even bat an eye at my typical $5,000 coin deposit. I’m in and out within 3 minutes.

More recently I noticed that the quantity limits for the Native American dollar coins were no longer listed on the site.

So I placed a $10,000 order and I got them less than a week later!

Sure I need to shlep 4 boxes each weighing 40 pounds to the bank, but hey, 10,000 Starwood points is 10,000 Starwood points!  (Using a past Starpoint redemption of mine that netted a return of 52 cents per Starpoint that’s worth $5,200, although more conventional wisdom would place a value of about $300 on them…)

Need To Meet A Spending Threshold Deadline? Get Waived Fees On AMEX Gift Cards!

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

This post is for all of you who don’t want to carry in 100 pounds of dollar coins into your local branch…

AMEX Gift Cards Linky

If you need to meet spending thresholds for bonus points (like 15K Starpoints for spending $15K within 6 months on the AMEX Starwood, 10K MR Points for spending $500 within 3 months on the AMEX Gold Rewards card, 25K MR Points for spending $1,000 within 3 months on the AMEX Platinum Card, etc.) but don’t have anything to buy right away than this may be for you!

Just buy the amount of Gift Cards you need to get you over the spending threshold bonus and then you’ll be able to use the GC as you need them on your everyday purchases.

You can use Visa, MC, or AMEX, and the GC’s are treated as a purchase, not as a cash advance.

You can only use one code:
For $5.95 off shipping use code (Exp: 07/31): AFL721
For waived card fees use code (Exp: 06/30): ENL55A

The most GC’s you can buy in one order is $5,000.  Depending on your order either of the previous codes may work out better for you.

AMEX Gold Charge Card Linky (Free for first year, Earn 10,000 AMEX MR Bonus Points after you spend $500.) AMEX MR points transfer to Flying Blue miles at 1:1.

20,000 Starwood Starpoints transfer into 25,000 Flying Blue (Air France and KLM’s joint loyalty program) miles.

That is all you will need to have to get to Israel or any other “European” destination through 10/31/09!

S.B.S. previously made an excellent 8 page PDF examining every way of getting to Israel via Starpoints.

In that article he pointed ways of getting to Israel for 40,000 Starpoints or less (Via transferring Starpoints to JAL, British Airways, LAN, or Flying Blue)

Through 10/31/09 there is a promo award to/from many cities in North America and Europe Zones 1, 2, or 3.

The promo award cost between North America and “Europe” in flying blue miles is:
Coach: 12,500 miles one way, 25,000 miles round trip.
Business: 25,000 miles one-way, 50,000 miles round trip.

For travel on KLM tickets the valid dates vary by city, so check the promo award page for the details.
For travel on Air France tickets must be booked by 07/29/09, and travel must be completed by 07/31/09.

Valid North American cities for origin or destination on Air France:
-Philadelphia
-Washington D.C.

Valid North American cities for origin or destination on KLM:
-Atlanta
-Calgary
-Chicago
-Dallas
-Detroit
-Houston
-Los Angeles
-Montreal
-NYC/JFK
-S. Francisco
-Washington D.C.

This is how Flying Blue defines Europe:
Europe 1: Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, and Switzerland
Europe 2: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden
Europe 3: Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Libya, Latvia, Lithuania, Morocco, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Western Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia

As Flying Blue considers Israel to be part of Europe (zone 3), it qualifies as a valid origin or destination.

The promo awards can only be flown with KLM via Amsterdam or with Air France via Paris, they are not valid on Skyteam partners such as Continental or Delta (although nonstop travel to Israel on those carriers is allowed on the regular 40,000 Starpoints/50,000 Flying Blue miles award to Europe zone 3 in coach or 80,000 flying blue miles in business.)

Unfortunately, you cannot search online for mileage availability on Flying Blue unless you have the required miles in your account.

AA Launches One-Way Mileage Awards!!!

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Note:  Need AA Miles? You can transfer 20K Starwood Starpoints that you’ve earned from your Starwood AMEX into 25K AA miles. Or you can easily churn AA’s credit card from Citibank.

Effective immediately you can now book one-way awards on American Airlines for half of the round-trip mileage required!

AA is the first major US based carrier to allow for one-way awards.

Besides for the obvious benefit of being able to book a one-way flight when you only need to travel one-way, there are even benefits from this new policy if you are traveling round-trip.

Previously if you were flying JFK-LAX and there was a 25K MileSAAver on the outbound, but only a 50K AAnytime on the return, the ticket would cost 50K.  With the new one-way ticket pricing that trip would only be 37.5K.  Or you could just book the outbound for 12.5K and keep checking for a 12.5K return flight to open up.

Additionally AA has a number of off-peak awards to international destinations.  Previously if your trip spanned from off-peak into peak pricing the entire trip was priced at peak.  Now you will be able to mix peak and off-peak pricing.

The only casualty of this new policy is the loss of a free stopover in an international city, which will now be priced as an additional one-way flight.  Seems like a very worthwhile trade-off in my book though…

Between this very customer friendly policy change, the counting of all AA miles towards lifetime elite status, and the ongoing amazing availbility of AA awards at MileSAAver rates, AAdvantage miles are by far the most valuable domestic mileage currency today.

Expired AA Miles? Take The Re-Engage ChAAlenge!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I admit it, I let my some 170,000 of my mom’s AA miles expire. But c’mon I’ve got miles and points in dozens of programs, can I really be expected to track my entire family’s miles as well? (I’ve since added my entire family’s mileage programs to my own mileage spreadsheet.)

Fine, my bad, but not to worry though, AA has an unpublished program called the “Re-Engage ChAAlenge!”

Sure AA has a published Reactivate miles program, but it’s prohibitively pricey…

So you probably know about AA’s Elite ChAAlenge which started costing money as of last October.

But AA also has a ChAAlenge to let you reactivate your miles for free.

There are 3 levels of the Re-Engage ChAAlenge. You have 1 year to complete the ChAAlenge from the date you sign up.
Sign up by simply calling AAdvantage customer service at 800-882-8880, say “AAdvantage account,” and ask for the Re-Engage ChAAlenge. They will send you an email with a PDF telling you exactly what you need to do to unexpire your miles. When you complete the requirements just call them back at the same number.

Re-Engage ChAAlenge Level 1: For reinstating 1-50,000 miles:
-You must subscribe to AAdvantage eSummary and AAdvantage Promotions email for 3 months.
And any one of the following:
Option 1: Open a new AA credit card and spend $750 on it.
Option 2: Earn 5,000 AA miles from a minimum of 3 AA partners. (See mileagemaximizer.com for tips)
Option 3: Fly on a round trip AA flight of at least 750 miles each way.

Re-Engage ChAAlenge Level 2: For reinstating 50,001-200,000 miles:
-You must subscribe to AAdvantage eSummary and AAdvantage Promotions email for 3 months.
-You must open a new AA credit card and spend $750 on it.
And either of the following:
Option 1: Earn 5,000 AA miles from a minimum of 3 AA partners. (See mileagemaximizer.com for tips)
Option 2: Fly on a round trip AA flight of at least 750 miles each way.

Re-Engage ChAAlenge Level 3: For reinstating 200,001 or more miles:
-You must subscribe to AAdvantage eSummary and AAdvantage Promotions email for 3 months.
-You must open a new AA credit card and spend $750 on it.
And either of the following:
Option 1: Earn 10,000 AA miles from a minimum of 3 AA partners. (See mileagemaximizer.com for tips)
Option 2: Fly on 2 round trip AA flights of at least 750 miles each way.

Lie-Flat Seats to Tel Aviv for 90K Miles

Delta and Northwest are running promotions for double miles when transferring miles to someone else’s Delta or Northwest account through 05/31/09

The fee for doing so is a penny per mile plus a $25 transaction fee on Northwest or a $30 transaction fee on Delta.

You can transfer up to 30,000 miles in a shot, which would give the recipient 60,000 total miles for a cost for $325 on Northwest or $330 on Delta. Of course charging it to a card like your Starwood AMEX will also net you 325-330 Starpoints on the transaction, bringing down the cost even further.

You can then transfer back the miles to your account, which will double them again. Be creative and you’ll be able to keep on going and going and going…

Northwest limits the amount of incoming miles via the inter-account transfer to 30,000 per year and the amount of outgoing miles via the inter-account transfer to 75,000 per year.

Delta limits the amount of incoming miles via the inter-account transfer to 300,000 per year and the amount of outgoing miles via the inter-account transfer to 150,000 per year.

In my experience the Northwest transfer occurs instantaneously, and the bonus miles will post immediately together with the transferred miles. The Delta transfer may take a day and the bonus miles will come within another day or two.

With this promotion you should be able to earn 90,000 Delta miles, or the amount of miles required for a Business Elite class trip to Tel Aviv during the current mileage ticket promo, for under $1,000.

Fly On Delta’s Brand New Lie-Flat Business Elite Seats To Israel For Just 90,000 Miles Round Trip!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I have been busily booking up tickets for friends and family on Delta’s fabulous 25% off business elite mileage tickets sale.

While I don’t think much of the 72,000 mile offering in coach to TLV, the 90,000 mile business elite offering is quite nice. It didn’t take much to convince my father in-law to pay the $100 redeposit fee and an extra 10,000 miles to cancel his coach MCI-TLV ticket and rebook it in business elite.

At any rate on select dates Delta will be flying their brand new 777-200LR aircraft to Tel Aviv which has the brand new lie-flat Business Elite seats. I was just able to snag some seats for my Aunt and Uncle on the lie-flats at the 90k rate!

Here are some links to give you an idea of the difference between Delta’s old and new Business Elite seats:

Old Business Elite

New Business Elite (777-200LR)

And finally a picture of good ole’ cattle class (where you should never have to sit if you play your miles right)

I see the 7770-200LR aircraft operating on the following dates for example:
JFK-TLV:
05/21

Mileage Run Anyone? AA Launches $198+ Boston-West Coast Fares!

Update: AA and United now both have fares between Boston and Los Angeles for $79+ each way for a total of just $179 round trip with all taxes! A RT flight will earn 15,666 redeemable miles and 10,444 elite qualifying miles!

Originally posted on 03/31:

AA has filed fares for $99 each way between Boston and Los Angeles, San Francisco, or San Diego.
With all taxes the round-trip price should be about $219. Same-day turnarounds are permitted.
Travel is valid between 04/29 and 06/17. Travel on Sundays and Fridays will be more.
Sample valid flight:
05/05, AA192, LAX-BOS, 10:15pm-6:50am.
05/06, AA25, BOS-LAX, 8:20am-11:45am.

Use aa.com’s “price and schedule” feature for help finding cheap days to fly.

You can combine 2 great promotions on these routes.
-Triple Redeemable miles.
-Double elite miles.

Thus the miles earned for non-elites, for a single RT flight, Boston to/from:
-Los Angeles: 15,666 redeemable miles, 10,444 elite qualifying miles.
-San Francisco: 16,224 redeemable miles, 10,816 elite qualifying miles.
-San Diego: 15,528 redeemable miles, 10,351 elite qualifying miles.
Of course Gold elites will also earn their 25% redeemable mileage bonus, and Platinum/EXP elites will earn their 100% redeemable mileage bonus.

There is no limit to the number of bonus miles that can be earned.

-Gold elite can be earned on AA by earning 25,000 elite qualifying miles in a calender year.
-Platinum elite can be earned on AA by earning 50,000 elite qualifying miles in a calender year.
-Executive Platinum elite can be earned on AA by earning 100,000 elite qualifying miles in a calender year.
Elite status earned by flying in 2009 would last until 02/28/11.

Lifetime Gold elite status can also be earned by banking 1,000,000 redeemable elite miles. Lifetime Platinum elite status is earned by banking 2,000,000 redeemable elite miles. AA is the only airline that counts redeemable elite miles (as opposed to elite qualifying miles) for earning million miler status.

Good luck, and if you do go (or are considering going) on a mileage run be sure to write about it in the comments!

Q2 Reduced Mileage Awards Linky
Fly to select cities worldwide for 7,500 less miles than American Airlines regularly charges if you have the AAdvantage World Mastercard!

To book these awards just call AA’s AAdvantage desk at 800-882-8880 and reference the award code listed in the above link.

(Note: Some agents will also allow you to originate from any listed city and fly to any US48 city for the discounted rate)

-Washington DC/IAD
-Cleveland
-Atlanta
-Houston/IAH
-Santa Barbara, CA

Effective Immediately: Lower Continental Fees On Award Ticket Changes!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Continental has spelled out their new reduced award ticket fees…if only all the other carriers would follow!

For award tickets booked beginning 02/19 the award date change is reduced from $150 to:

-Free for changes made 21 or more days in advance of booked award travel.

-$75 for changes made within 21 days of booked award travel.

A unique aspect of the new policy is that this even applies to changes made to the carriers and connecting flights as long as the origin and destination cities remain the same.  Continental is the only airline that lets you change the carrier for free and only Continental and AA allow you to change connecting flights for free.

For those of you keeping score at home, here is a roundup of the award ticket change policies of the legacy US carriers:

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Update: Flying Blue has extended this promotion for the same cities listed below from 02/28/09 to 03/31/09!

Starwood AMEX Linky (Free for first year, Earn 10,000 Starpoints With First Purchase, and 30,000 more Starpoints with your first $15,000 in purchases) The US Mint should be able to help you there…

AMEX Gold Charge Card Linky (Free for first year, Earn 10,000 AMEX MR Bonus Points after you spend $500.) AMEX MR points transfer to Flying Blue miles at 1:1.

20,000 Starwood Starpoints transfer into 25,000 Flying Blue (Air France and KLM’s joint loyalty program) miles.

That is all you will need to have to get to Israel or any other “European” destination in January or February!

S.B.S. previously made an excellent 8 page PDF examining every way of getting to Israel via Starpoints.

In that article he pointed ways of getting to Israel for 40,000 Starpoints or less (Via transferring Starpoints to JAL, British Airways, LAN, or Flying Blue)

For January/February there is a promo award to/from many cities in North America and Europe Zones 1, 2, or 3.

The promo award cost between North America and “Europe” in flying blue miles is:
Coach: 12,500 miles one way, 25,000 miles round trip.
Business: 22,500 miles one-way, 45,000 miles round trip.

Tickets must be booked by 02/26/09, and all travel must be completed by 02/28/09.

Valid North American cities for origin or destination:
Atlanta
Chicago
Dallas
Detroit
Houston (Coach promo award only)
Montreal
NYC/JFK
Toronto
Vancouver
Washington DC

This is how Flying Blue defines Europe:
Europe 1: Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, and Switzerland
Europe 2: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden
Europe 3: Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Libya, Latvia, Lithuania, Morocco, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Western Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia

As Flying Blue considers Israel to be part of Europe (zone 3), it qualifies as a valid origin or destination.

The promo awards can only be flown with KLM via Amsterdam. that are not valid on Skyteam partners such as Continental or Delta (although nonstop travel to Israel on those carriers is allowed on the regular 40,000 Starpoints/50,000 Flying Blue miles award to Europe zone 3 in coach or 90,000 flying blue miles in business.)

Flying Blue Promo Award: January/February 2008

Unfortunately, you cannot search online for mileage availability on Flying Blue unless you have the required miles in your account.

A stopover in Amsterdam is allowed and will make finding mileage availability easier.

The best bet for checking availability will be by calling Flying Blue at 1-800-375-8723

Citi Thank You Points Devalued…

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Effective 03/01/09 Citi will be devaluing their thank you points drastically.

Up until this point they offered a fixed-point redemption option allowing points to be worth up to 2 cents each when redeemed for coach or up to 3 cents per point for business class.

On March 1st Citi’s thank you points will be capped at just a penny apiece with the elimination of the fixed-point option.

You can transfer 20,000 Starpoints into 50,000 LAN Kilometers!

LAN has some absolutely incredible deals to places like Brazil (A $1,000+ coach ticket for under 20,000 Starpoints!) and Israel.

They also have a top-of-the-line new business class that requires less than 40,000 Starpoints to get to Brazil (Normally $6,000+)

Even classier is that they don’t charge any ridiculous expedite fees, and they allow free online date changes to LAN award tickets.
