Get An Incredible Value Out Of Starpoints With LAN’s New OneWorld Award Chart!!!

Get 1,000 LANPASS kilometers for signing up for a LAN account.

Starwood AMEX Linky

It’s been over 2 years since I transferred Starpoints into LAN kilometers but I finally got a chance to redeem them.

20,000 Starpoints transfer into 50,000 LAN kilometers. At the time I used the often overlooked Starwood Night and Flights option by redeeming 60,000 Starpoints for 5 nights at the former Sheraton Jerusalem and 100,000 LAN kilometers.

Originally I had planned to use them to go to Brazil for just 48,000 kilometers, but I haven’t (yet) been able to coerce myself back into the country where I launched this site ever since I was nearly killed there in a riot in 2007…

I was looking for tickets for people to go from NYC and Chicago to Montreal and was in shock at the $400 prices. I was able to redeem 16,000 kilometers for a round-trip NYC-Montreal ticket, 18,000 kilometers for an open-jaw NYC-Montreal-Chicago ticket, and 20,000 kilometers for a round-trip Chicago-Montreal ticket. All of those flights were on AA.

LAN does make you jump through some hoops to redeem award tickets when the account holder isn’t traveling. I had to fax them a copy of my drivers license and an authorization form in order to redeem my kilometers. Some of the agents working there are extremely helpful and patient while others are unintelligible or just downright nasty.

The taxes on the tickets were just under $40, which is slightly less than what AA charges! Plus LAN has no expedite fees and has free date changes.

Redeeming 16,000 kilometers for a NYC-Montreal ticket that would’ve cost $400 is a great deal. At a 2:5 ratio it cost me only 6,400 Starpoints for the round trip ticket. Even when you account for backing out the $40 in taxes, the value per Starpoint is still over 5.5 cents, which clears my threshold for redeeming Starpoints!

All in all there are some very good redemption options on the LAN OneWorld chart, but (as I explained in the related article linked to above) they are primarily only good for short nonstop flights.

Clarification: This deal is basically only good on non-stop flights, and is best on short-haul flights.  It only works on round-trip flights.  Go to the comments to read an example for how to calculate the pricing of a stop flight and why this isn’t a good way to get from JFK to Tel Aviv.

Note: Starwood Starpoints transfer into LAN kilometers at a 1:2 ratio.  If you transfer 20,000 Starpoints you will get 50,000 LAN kilometers due to the doubling of the 5,000 point bonus that’s awarded with every 20,000 Starpoint transfer into miles!
You can also use 60,000 Starpoints with Starwood’s “Nights & Flights” option for 5 nights in a category 3 hotel and 100,000 LAN kilometers.
I have personally done and can confirm that both of these transfer options work, although it does take a couple weeks for the transfer to complete.

LAN has made some major changes to their OneWorld award chart.  They now charge a set amount of miles for each flight segment, which makes connecting flights cost significantly more kilometers than it did with the old chart.  At the same time there some new bargains especially on short-haul nonstops that can be found with the new chart.

LAN Oneworld Award Chart Linky

With the new chart just 20,000 Starpoints will get you 8 one-way tickets between LaGuardia and Boston, or 6 one-way tickets between Chicago and Toronto!

LAN is one of the only foreign airlines that does not charge a fuel surcharge on award tickets.  Plus LAN doesn’t charge other fees like US airlines do for award expedite fees and the like.  There is no charge to change the date on award tickets.

You must call the LANPASS award desk to redeem a Oneworld award at 866-435-9526, option #5.

If you find any other great uses with the new chart then please leave a comment!

In the chart below are the prices for sample routes in LAN kilometers and their equivalent in Starpoints assuming that you transfer 20,000 Starpoints for 50,000 LAN kilometers.  See the LAN link above for business and first class rates.  Please note that not every route listed below is a bargain.  It gets harder to find bargains as the flight distance increases.  (For example the JFK-Hong Kong route can be had for just 40,000 Starpoints during off-season by transferring directly to AA.)

You can use the great circle links below to calculate the distance in kilometers between any 2 cities.

Most of the flights below on are for travel on AA, but some routes include flights from Alaska, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas.

If the actual one-way flight distance in kms. is between:Then the one-way flight in coach will cost the following LAN kms.Which is equivalent to the following amount of Starpoints at a 2:5 ratio.Sample Routes (actual distance in kms.) on OneWorld and partner carriers such as AA, Alaska, British Airways, Cathay Pacific,  Qantas, and others.

Lan Reward Ticket Promo: Up To 50% Off Mileage Tickets From The US To South America!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Related: Starwood AMEX Linky (Free for first year, Earn 10,000 Starpoints With First Purchase, and 30,000 more Starpoints with your first $15,000 in purchases) The US Mint should be able to help you there…

Before getting to the promo, I’ll just cover some background info on LAN.

As I’m sure you know already, 20,000 Starpoints transfers into a whopping 50,000 LANPASS kms. (I’ve done this transfer many times and can confirm that you will indeed receive 50K LAN kms. regardless of whatever any CS rep may tell you)

LAN has a pretty nice reward table. (you need to set the country to USA/English on the LAN page, and then return and click this link again to get to the table) There is a separate reward table for LAN flights and for One World flights.

Best part? LAN is one of the few international carriers that doesn’t charge any fuel surcharges on mileage tickets.

The LAN reward table is based on destination.  For example a ticket from the US to Brazil is 48,000 kilometers.  You are also allowed to add on AA or Alaska flights to get you to a LAN gateway city (JFK, LAX, MIA), and a stopover is allowed.

The One World chart is kilometer based and is valid for travel on any One World airline. You can check the distance in kilometers on the great circle mapper.

For example a round-trip flight from JFK to Tel Aviv via London on British Airways is 18,296 Kilometers. That trip would fall into a zone 4 One World award which costs 95,000 kms in economy, 140,000 kms in business, or 190,000 kms. in first.  With the 20,000 Starpoints to 50,000 kms. transfer and no fuel surcharges those all make for excellent values.

———————————————————————————————————
At any rate here is the link for the current South America promo. In LAN coach the discount is up to half off the normal mileage rates.  In LAN Premium Business (which has some great reviews) you need to book 2 tickets to get up to 50% off.

Here are some sample sale rates:

Coach:
Miami – Caracas: 24,000 kms.
New York – Lima: 35,000 kms.
Los Angeles – Santiago: 49,000 kms.
New York – Buenos Aires: 49,000 kms.

Premium Business:
Miami – Caracas: 110,000 kms. for 2 RT tickets.
New York – Lima: 150,000 kms. for 2 RT tickets.
Los Angeles – Santiago: 200,000 kms. for 2 RT tickets.
New York – Buenos Aires: 200,000 kms. for 2 RT tickets.

I checked a random date (from 07/08-07/15) for 2 tickets from NYC to Buenos Aires in Premium Business and found availability for 100,000 kms. per ticket with taxes of $66.

With the exchange rate for Argentine Pesos at historically favorable rates (currently about 3.8 per dollar) you’ll get some great bang for buck down in Buenos Aires.

For the up to 50% off promo:
-Tickets must be booked by 07/08.
-Travel must be complete by 12/23.
-Departure date blackouts are from 07/16-08/12.
-Travel is only valid on LAN, not on partners.
-As with all LAN award tickets, date changes are free. However if you are changing dates you must travel within the valid dates of the promo.
-As with all LAN award tickets, you can hold the reservation for 3 days on Lan.com.

You can transfer 20,000 Starpoints into 50,000 LAN Kilometers!

LAN has some absolutely incredible deals to places like Brazil (A $1,000+ coach ticket for under 20,000 Starpoints!) and Israel.

They also have a top-of-the-line new business class that requires less than 40,000 Starpoints to get to Brazil (Normally $6,000+)

Even classier is that they don’t charge any ridiculous expedite fees, and they allow free online date changes to LAN award tickets.

HURRY! SMOKING HOT!!! Price Mistake! Save $$$$ With No Fuel Surcharge On Select Routes When You Book On LAN.com!!!!

Update 9: New York-Shanghai is just $562 on lan.com!!! ($928 on aa.com.)
Sample date: 11/04 (AA309/2)-11/11 (288/1918)
HT: Finckmyster, via dansdeals.com/forums

Update 8: You can manage your British Airways bookings (request kosher meals, assign seats, add frequent flyer info, etc.) made via lan.com by using this link.

Update 7: London/LHR to Los Angeles is available for just $267 round-trip on AA or on BA.
I was only able to get such a low fare to price out when departing from London.
Sample valid dates: 11/05-11/12.

Update 6: I just booked 7 tickets for my cousins from JFK to Tel Aviv for $613/ticket, so the deal is still alive and kicking.

In order to get it to book I did have to choose the multi-city option as follows:
New York-London: 01/26/09
London-Tel Aviv: 01/26/09
Tel Aviv-London: 02/09/09
London-New York: 02/10/09

All flights are on British Airways.

On the way there the layover is just 1 hour and 50 minutes, however on the way back there is an overnight layover in London of 12 hours.

I was able to get them a 4 star London Heathrow hotel room on Priceline with a $70 bid. It turned to be the Sheraton Heathrow, where the regular rates are over $200 with tax.

Again, I’d like to reiterate that this deal will not create cheap tickets for all dates, it will simply take about $650 off of the price of a British Airways ticket. So go to ba.com, find the cheapest dates, price out a trip until you get the tax-inclusive price, and then you will have an idea of how much the price will be on lan.com.

While some people have been able to book travel to Tel Aviv via the regular round-trip booking option which doesn’t require an overnight stay in London, most dates will give you an error. The only way around this is to try different flights or dates, or you can stick with the same dates and just use the multi-city option which will require an overnight stay in London, but should always work without an error.

Update 5: This deal is bookable from Tel Aviv as well!!! (And for that matter it should work with this method from any city in the world!)
Here’s an example of how to do it:
-Step 1: Search from Boston to New York for 02/10/09 to 02/17/09.
-Step 2: The next page is the search results page, go into the URL and find both instances where it says BOS and replace them with TLV.
-Step 3: You will now get the search results for Tel Aviv to New York. Select the British Airways flights and the final price comes out to $638 which is more than $600 off of the lowest price available on britishairways.com!!!
-Use this same method for any other orignination city by using its 3 digit airport code.
HT: Eeh-Lye

Update 4: NYC to Tel Aviv is now available for just $617 Round-Trip including all taxes on British Airways when booking via LAN.com, which is more than $600 off of the lowest price available on britishairways.com!!!
HT: Charles Light, via dansdeals.com/forums

Additionally Los Angeles to Tel Aviv is now available for just $796 Round-Trip including all taxes on British Airways when booking via LAN.com, which is more than $750 off of the lowest price available on britishairways.com!!!
Sample valid dates for NYC or LAX-TLV: 02/10-02/17.

Update 3: NYC to/from London is now available for just $353 Round-Trip including all taxes on AA and on British Airways when booking via LAN.com, which is more than $300 off of the lowest price available on aa.com or britishairways.com!
Sample valid dates: 11/18-11/25.

Update 2: It’s fitting that while I’m in Chicagoland I give back some love to the windy city! I just priced out tickets from Chicago/ORD to London for just $327 Round-Trip including all taxes on AA and on British Airways when booking via LAN.com, which is more than $300 off of the lowest price available on aa.com or britishairways.com!
Sample valid dates: 10/22-10/29.

Update: Some people are having trouble booking JFK-TLV-JFK. If you are having this problem the workaround for this is to use the multi-city search option and book it as four segments. New York-London, London-Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv-London, and London-New York.

IMPORTANT:

-Book on the US version of LAN.com for the best deals!

-This deal works better if you only use one airline

-Tickets booked on LAN.com are refundable for 24 hours.

-If you want to select a destination city not on the list just scroll down to “other cities” and type in the name of the city (not the airport code). It will then give you an error message, but you should then be able to find the name of city that you entered right at the the drop-down menu!

-LAN.com is very picky with certain credit cards…keep trying different cards until you get one to work!

-Using the lowest price search at aa.com or britishairways.com is a good way to find the cheapest dates and flights. You can then search those dates at LAN.

LAN, home of the incredible 20,000 Starpoints=50,000 LAN kms. transfer and of the no fuel-surcharge award tickets, is selling regular tickets on other airlines without a fuel surcharge!

LAN.com is pricing out select routes and airlines without a fuel surcharge, yielding potential savings of hundreds of dollars!

1. AA/BA: NYC/JFK to London/LHR on 11/05-11/12: Savings=$311
The price for this RT ticket including all taxes and surcharges from British Airways and from AA is $761, but is only $450 on either airline from lan.com!

2. Qantas: NYC/JFK to Sydney on 09/07-09/14: Savings=$258
The price for this RT ticket including all taxes and surcharges from Qantas is $1,637, but is only $1,379 from lan.com!

3. BA: London/LHR to Tel Aviv on 11/05-11/12: Savings=$311

7. BA: NYC/JFK to Johannesburg on 11/04-11/11: Savings=$763
The price for this RT ticket including all taxes and surcharges from British Airways is $2,060, but is only $1,297 from lan.com!

Find another great deal? Post a comment!

Things to note:

-The LAN website is incredibly buggy…

-This seems to only work with OneWorld carriers, but it may work for other carriers as well. Try to stick with travel on one alliance.

-There doesn’t appear to be a way to get the site to display more flight options, either take what it pulls up or search for a different day.

It’s no longer about the miles-it’s about the kilometer!

LAN, based out of South America, is a OneWorld alliance member.
They have some really great flight bargains.
Why should you care?
Because 20,000 Starpoints transfers into 50,000 Lanpass Kilometers!!!

That’s right, Starpoints transfer into Lanpass Kilometers at a ratio of 1:2 plus you get 5,000 bonus starpoints with a 20,000 starpoint transfer, which at the same 1:2 ratio means you will get 10,000 bonus kilometers!

It gets better.

Lanpass Award Table Linky
Great Circle Mapper Linky

The top part of the award page shows the awards when you fly on LAN.

Some of the shocking values of Lanpass kilometers:
Bear in mind that 20,000 starpoints=50,000 kilometers!

Flights on LAN between South America zone 1 (Including Brasil) and North America are just 48,000 kilometers in coach and 90,000 kilometers in business class!
This is less than what most other airlines charge in miles!

Then comes the OneWorld award possibilities.
There are 8 Oneworld zones.
With Lanpass, (unlike cathay pacific) the kilometers listed is the total roundtrip flight kilometers.
Make sure to set the Great circle mapper to kilometers when checking distances!

Here’s the kicker:
Going from New York to Tel Aviv via London on British Airways is 18296 km.
(Chicago to Tel Aviv via London on British Airways works as well, it is 19909 km, or just 91 km. away from being zone 5!)
That places it in zone 4:
Economy: 95,000 km.
Business: 140,000 km.
First: 190,000 km

With the free 5,000 km signup bonus, you only need 90,000 km. to get to Israel!
When you transfer just 40,000 starpoints you’ll have over 100,000 km. in your Lanpass account!

ENJOY!
