“Save My AA Miles!”

Ush wrote in a comment in the discussion post,

“I have some AA points expiring next week i have signed up and used a new AA credit card but they wont credit the points for 8-10 weeks will this stop the points from expiring? if not what the easiest and cheapest way of generating activity on my account?”

Opening or even using airline credit cards are a great way to extend the life of miles. Unfortunately the whole process does indeed take a while. With the AA card you will get the miles within 2 days of the statement closing date. You can check when your statement closes on citicards.com.

The problem with extending the life of miles by earning is that it may take time for the earned miles to post and in the meantime your miles may expire. While you may be able to reinstate the miles retroactively, why risk it?

Here are some better options that should work: (I do not guarantee that any of these will post in time, the only way to guarantee that is to buy miles from AA)

-Donate miles to Make-A Wish

-Get 100 AA miles by joining points.com for free. The 100 miles may not post in time, so make a token transfer from AA to another airline. Their exchange rates are horrendous, but you just need any account activity to extend the life of all your miles.

-Transfer Starpoints to AA.

-Buy a magazine subscription for as little as 400 miles:

AA

Continental

Delta

Northwest

United

If you have already lost miles, but you did an action to earn/spend miles before the expiry date, be sure to fight to get ‘em back!

Help! My Miles Are Expiring!

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Eli wrote in a comment,

“My air canada miles are expiring tomorrow due to no activity do u know of any way i can keep them (with out things like donating) please let me know…Thanx”

Air Canada’s Aeroplan has the harshest mileage expiration policy of a non-LCC North American carrier.

Miles expire if there is no activity in a 12 month period, and they are removed 7 years after they were earned even if you do have activity within 12 months.

That being the case, it is well worth your while to credit Air Canada flight miles to another Star Alliance carrier, such as United.

There are good ways to get miles for free on AC, such as getting 1,000 miles for signing up for a free National Emerald club membership, but those are unlikely to post in time to save your miles.

I am not 100% familiar with the Aeroplan program, so I will lay out the options that work for the programs that I am familiar with, and hope that some of them work for you.

You don’t need to earn miles, you only need account activity to extend the life of miles, so here are some options to extend miles that are expiring soon:

1. Make an award booking: If you have enough miles to book an award ticket, that activity should extend the life of your miles. After the ticket is confirmed and your account is debited for the miles you can go ahead and cancel the ticket. The charge for this varies by airline, but averages $50-$100.

2. Buy miles: Most airlines sell miles for about 3 cents each. While it’s rarely worth buying enough miles for a ticket at that price, it is worth buying 500 miles to extend the life of all your miles!

3. Transfer miles: Most airlines allow you to transfer miles to family members or even other people at about 2 cents a mile. Just make the minimum transfer and you’re good to go!

4. Starwood: Transfer Starpoints  into miles.

There are more options, such as opening up a credit card, but that is only an option when you have a couple months for the miles to post…

Good luck!

What To Do Once You Get The 7200 RPM Notebook Hard Drive?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Update: Asher O. points out that Newegg has a 2.5″ enclosure for just $5.84 after a $13.99 rebate…

An anonymous commenter said,

“hey dan
i bought the hard drive, now do i have to reinstall win and all my programs, if i want to install the harddrive ( i dont have any cd to install my programs that i currently have) is there a way to just transfer from one hard drive to the other?”

Anon-that’s a great purchase, I hope you enjoy the upgrade as much as I did!

Meanwhile, you have a few options;

There are basic data transfer programs that come free with some external hard-drives.

You can also just buy a program like Norton Ghost to duplicate your data onto a new hard drive.
The $16.99 deal for that is still valid:
Norton Ghost Linky

As far as Windows goes, if you call your computer manufacturer and tell them that you fried your old hard drive and are putting in a new one, they will send you out a free Windows CD.

Finally, you may want to invest in a 2.5″ external hard drive enclosure which will allow you to use your old notebook hard drive as an external drive.

Reader Request: Brazilian Cell Phone Info!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Anon asked in a comment,
“Dan – quick question…
being that you are the Brazil maven…
I’m going to brazil this week for a wedding and I need a cell phone…
what’s my best bet?
Sterling electronics does not have rentals for brazil and I currently have a Sprint phone (no sim card)
any ideas?
thanks for your help!”

First of all, I’ll make the presumption that you are going to Brazil for the Slonim wedding-if so please send my regards to the family, especially Levi and Yehuda…

While there is CDMA service in Brazil with Vivo, they won’t activate your Sprint phone.

You have a couple options.

Option 1:
If you just want to be able to speak with one person back home then just sign up 2 phones for Nextel’s unlimited international direct connect plan.
They have a free 30-day trial, and you can talk to each other for as long as you’d like with the push of a button.

I thank G-d that I brought one with me during my past trip-and I wouldn’t go back to Brazil without one.

Option 2:
If you need to speak to multiple people in the US who don’t have Nextel you will need to buy (or borrow from someone) an unlocked world phone.
The reason that you need a world phone is because the GSM bands that we use here are different than in the rest of the world.
A regular unlocked phone in the US will only work on 850/1900 bands.
In Brazil they use the 1800 band of GSM service.
You can check which bands a phone has by searching the model number on a website like phonescoop.com
You can check if a phone is unlocked by sticking in 2 different companies’ SIM cards and seeing if the phone works.

The cheapest company to sign up with is TIM.
They have stores in every shopping mall in Brazil.
The sim card is 19 Reais(about US$10) and includes R$5 of talk time.

To make international calls you will need a “cartão internacional,” an international calling card.

You can pick a card up at most of the newspaper/magazine stands that line the streets.

The calling card will cost between R$25-R$50.
The card will have 2 access numbers on it.
One is an 0-800 number, which is toll free.
When you use this number it will not cost any cell minutes, but it will cost a lot more card minutes.
To call to the US with the 0-800 number will probably be about R$1.50/minute.

Here is a link, in Portuguese, for a good international calling card:
www.speakmax.com.br

The local access number will allow to talk to the US for very cheap-about R$0.09/minute, but you will need to buy an additional TIM recharge card for more cell minutes.

You can pick up TIM recharge cards at most of the newspaper/magazine stands, cards come in denominations from R$10-R$100, and local minutes are about R$1.30

Also incoming calls-even from the US are always free with TIM!

Hope this helps…

If you need more info, feel free to email me, and I can hook you up with some of my amigos brasileiros, who would be more than happy to take to you around town and help you out!
Also don’t miss out on some of the amazing restaurant deals you can get down there! (But don’t try smuggling back kosher mcdonalds stuff either)

Have a safe trip-Boa Viagem!

Reader Request: SD Cards!

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Zak asked in a comment,
“Im leaving on birthright in a month, and staying the whole summer, and I need a second 2gig SD card. If you could find me one within a week or two that’d be swell.”

Hey Zak, enjoy Israel-I’m jealous of you!!!
Having a couple of high capacity memory cards is definitely the best way to go on a vacation!
I always take tons of pictures and then turn them into a beautiful photo book(which is so much nicer than having a bunch of loose photographs, or worse, having a bunch of digital files left on your hard drive that nobody will ever get to see) thanks to Shutterfly!

Here are a few good options, most of the best deals I found are from buy.com so you can save $10 if you open a new google checkout account, or save $5 off $50 for opening a new buy.com account

Option 1: Buy.com
This will be just $12.95, but it requires a $22 Rebate:

2 GB SD Card Linky

Option 3: Buy.com
This is a 2GB SD card for $19.95 shipped-no rebate to worry about!
