Continental Launches Systemwide Upgrades!

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

With the upcoming reciprocal upgrades between Continental and United elite flyers you knew this announcement couldn’t be far off. It matches United’s Global Services membership level and systemwide upgrades for United 1K flyers. Now when will Continental build an economy plus section on their planes?

Continental just announced that they will reward flyers who earn 100K elite flyers with 4 one-way systemwide upgrade certificates.  The upgrade certificates are valid from any fare paid.  Currently only AA allows the use of systemwide upgrade certificates with any fare.  And Continental’s new BusinessFirst cabin is light-years ahead of AA’s next generation business class.  Systemwide upgrade earned in 2010 must be used by 02/28/12.

Systemwide upgrades will be fully transferable! They are valid to anywhere Continental flies. A one-way upgrade will upgrade the entire one-way ticket, regardless of the number of segments.

Also for high-spend Platinums there is a new top-tier elite level called Presidential Platinum for people that fly 75K elite miles and spend $30K/year.  They’ll get confirmed upgrades 6 days before the flight and a free presidential plus mastercard which includes a presidents club membership.  Flyers that have 4 million lifetime elite miles will get lifetime Presidential Platinum status.

Both programs start 01/01/10.

USAirways Race To Preferred Status!

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Offer Linky

If you fly the following amounts on USAirways between 10/01/09-12/25/09 you will get fast-tracked to elite status valid through 02/28/11.

Registration is not required.

It’s a cute twist on the double elite miles promo offered by AA, Continental, and United, but it seems to have been made without giving any thought to how it might upset current USAirways elite members who have been flying the whole year to attain elite status and don’t gain anything with the promo.

-Fly 7,500 miles or 10 segments and earn Silver Preferred status
-Fly 15,000 miles or 20 segments and earn Gold Preferred status
-Fly 22,500 miles or 30 segments and earn Platinum Preferred status
-Fly 30,000 miles or 40 segments and earn Chairman’s Preferred status

Continental Double Elite Miles Registration Linky

Wow the bookings must be really bad for the airlines to resort to a double elite miles twice in a year!

At any rate Continental has finally matched the double elite miles promo initiated by AA and matched by United for travel between 09/09/09 and 12/15/09.

With all of these double elite miles promos there’s really no excuse to be paying for checked baggage or flying in coach ;)

Same terms as AA’s offer, except it starts for travel from 09/03 and you get to choose between double elite miles and double elite segments! People that fly many short flights or flights with stops may have an easier time attaining elite status via flight segments that via miles.

And now we wait while Continental and Delta figure out what to do about balancing the need for incremental revenue versus bloating their elite ranks.

Have Hyatt Platinum Status? Get Trial Diamond Status And 4 Confirmed Suite Upgrades!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Related: Free Trial Period Of Platinum Elite Status At Hyatt

First off, a little background information on the Hyatt program:

Hyatt has 2 elite levels, Platinum and Diamond.

Platinum status normally requires 5 stays in a year. It is also given out for free (but only once in a lifetime) as a status match to anyone with elite status at another hotel chain or to Continental Presidential Plus Mastercard holders.

Platinum status gets you free internet access, the best room within your reserved category, and bonus points at Hyatt hotels.

Diamond status normally requires 25 stays in a year. It is also given out for free (but only once in a lifetime) as a status match to anyone with at least 10 stays at another hotel chain.

Diamond status gets you upgraded to Regency or Grand club rooms based on availability at check-in. As a diamond member you also get 4 confirmed upgrades to a suite per year.

If you already have Platinum status you can login to your Hyatt account, use the contact Hyatt Gold Passport form and ask “to be enrolled in the 2DTRIAL2 promotion for the upgrade to Diamond membership”.

You must send an email requesting Diamond status by 08/30. You will be given Diamond status through 12/31/09 as well as 4 electronic suite upgrade certificates. In order to maintain the Diamond status through 02/11 you will have to have 15 stays by 12/31/09.

If you already have Diamond status you can also ask to be enrolled in the 2DTRIAL2 promotion and you’ll be able to requalify with only 15 stays instead of 25.

Last year Hyatt’s incredible faster free nights promotion ran from 09/01-12/31, all indications are that they will probably aim for a similar timeframe this year, so it shouldn’t be too hard to hit 15 stays…

AAdvantage Lifetime Platinum!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Well, I finally hit 2,000,000 AA miles which means that I now have lifetime Platinum status.

American Airlines is the only airline in the world that counts all earned miles towards million miler/lifetime elite status! Every other airline only counts actual flight miles to attain lifetime elite status.

I joined the AA program in 2002, hit 1,000,000/Lifetime Gold in 2007, and now have over 2,000,000 miles!

Between churning cards, a 14 flight/36 hour mileage run, and the alive and kicking US mint deal it was actually not so hard.

So, What’s in your wallet? :)

When you hit 1,000,000 you get 8 500-mile domestic upgrade stickers if you live in North America, or 4 one-way international upgrades certificates if you live outside North America.

When you hit 2,000,000 AA miles you get 4 one-way international upgrades regardless of where you live.

As the lifetime program is completely undocumented, it is liable to change at any time. There have been rumors for some time now that AA wants to go to actual flight miles for lifetime status, but lacks the technology to go back and see how every member actually earned their miles.

For now all miles earned, whether by flying, opening credit cards, or transfers from Starwood, count towards lifetime status. Even if you spend miles, your lifetime counter does not decrease.

You can check your own progress towards lifetime status on AA.com where it lists your total program miles to date.

I got a kick out of the first line of the congratulatory letter, “When you first became a million miler, you may not have thought about the next threshold…” Well they obviously don’t know their customer too well do they? ;)

Airtran Cuts Elite Status Requirements!

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Airtran has slashed the requirements to become elite in half!

You now have to fly 10 A+ flight credits within 90 days or 25 with a year to become elite. A one-way flight in coach earns 1 credit, in business class it earns 1.5 credits.

Main benefit: As an elite on Airtran you and a companion get a free upgrade at the gate if it’s available.  (It’s fairly reliable-I’ve never missed an upgrade ever!)

You are also able to transfer credits to any member for free and everyone on your itinerary can check 2 bags for free.

Airtran elites also get top-tier elite benefits with Frontier as well.

Mileage Run Anyone? AA Launches $198+ Boston-West Coast Fares!

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Update: AA and United now both have fares between Boston and Los Angeles for $79+ each way for a total of just $179 round trip with all taxes! A RT flight will earn 15,666 redeemable miles and 10,444 elite qualifying miles!

Originally posted on 03/31:

AA has filed fares for $99 each way between Boston and Los Angeles, San Francisco, or San Diego.
With all taxes the round-trip price should be about $219. Same-day turnarounds are permitted.
Travel is valid between 04/29 and 06/17. Travel on Sundays and Fridays will be more.
Sample valid flight:
05/05, AA192, LAX-BOS, 10:15pm-6:50am.
05/06, AA25, BOS-LAX, 8:20am-11:45am.

Use aa.com’s “price and schedule” feature for help finding cheap days to fly.

You can combine 2 great promotions on these routes.
-Triple Redeemable miles.
-Double elite miles.

Thus the miles earned for non-elites, for a single RT flight, Boston to/from:
-Los Angeles: 15,666 redeemable miles, 10,444 elite qualifying miles.
-San Francisco: 16,224 redeemable miles, 10,816 elite qualifying miles.
-San Diego: 15,528 redeemable miles, 10,351 elite qualifying miles.
Of course Gold elites will also earn their 25% redeemable mileage bonus, and Platinum/EXP elites will earn their 100% redeemable mileage bonus.

There is no limit to the number of bonus miles that can be earned.

-Gold elite can be earned on AA by earning 25,000 elite qualifying miles in a calender year.
-Platinum elite can be earned on AA by earning 50,000 elite qualifying miles in a calender year.
-Executive Platinum elite can be earned on AA by earning 100,000 elite qualifying miles in a calender year.
Elite status earned by flying in 2009 would last until 02/28/11.

Lifetime Gold elite status can also be earned by banking 1,000,000 redeemable elite miles. Lifetime Platinum elite status is earned by banking 2,000,000 redeemable elite miles. AA is the only airline that counts redeemable elite miles (as opposed to elite qualifying miles) for earning million miler status.

Good luck, and if you do go (or are considering going) on a mileage run be sure to write about it in the comments!

Delta Launches Bogus “Triple” Elite-Qualifying Miles Promotion…

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

AA/United Offer
Continental Offer

Delta Offer Registration Linky

Oh boy does the Delta marketing team know how to work PR spin.

AA started off the fun offering double elite miles on newly purchased tickets, which United soon matched.  Continental then offered double elite miles even if the tickets had already been purchased. None of these airlines made restrictions regarding what kind of fare you booked with.

Now Delta is touting up to “triple elite miles.”

The reason it is bogus is simple, the only fares that will earn “triple” elite miles are business/first and full-fare coach tickets that anyway earn 150% elite miles. (Specifically fares booked in codes: J, C, D, S, I, F, A, Y, B, M) Those fares will now earn 300%, or double the normal rate.

Tickets booked in non-discount coach (fare codes: H, Q, K) will earn 200% elite miles.

All other regular discount coach fares that the vast majority of people buy (fare codes: L, U, T) will not earn any bonus elite miles.

The “promotion” is valid for flights booked abd flown on between March 23 and June 15, 2009.

SMOKING HOT! DOUBLE ELITE QUALIFYING MILES ON CONTINENTAL!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

For the first time since just after 9/11, Continental has just released a double elite qualifying miles offer in response to AA and United’s offer!

Double EQM’s Offer Registration Linky

Best of all, unlike AA and United’s offer there are no exclusions for previously bought tickets!

All travel between 03/20 and 06/15 will earn double elite qualifying miles!

While most of the other airlines often have yearly elite qualifying mile promotions, Continental has traditionally been very careful about offering any sort of elite shortcut.

In my opinion Continental’s bottom and mid-tier Silver and Gold status levels are the best of any domestic airline.  Silver status requires 25,000 elite qualifying miles flown in a calendar year, while Gold requires 50,000. Status earned now will last until February 28, 2011.  Benefits from being elite include 2 free checked bags for you and your companions, bonus miles on each flight, free upgrades to the best domestic first class product, and even free upgrades on non-BusinessFirst international routes. Here is the list of elite benefits on Continental.

On Y and B coach fares (which are automatically upgraded for elites at the time of booking) as well as on all Business/First fares you will now earn at least 250% elite qualifying miles. Thus a single BusinessFirst flight from NYC to Israel will make you elite.

Continental’s upper-tier Platinum level however is altogether disappointing, and is nowhere near the benefits of upper-tier Executive Platinum on AA. The only redeeming factor is that Continental Platinum only requires 75,000 elite qualifying miles, while AA’s EXP level requires 100,000 elite qualifying miles.

Continental (Finally) Will Launch A Lifetime Elite Status Program!

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Continental is finally launching a million miler program. They join AA, Delta, and United in offering lifetime perks for people who have flown 1,000,000 miles.

Elite status is typically earned by earning at least 25,000 elite qualifying miles in a year. There are however many other ways of becoming elite, such as via a challenge, a status match, or via a million miler program.

Continental’s million miler program is similar to Delta’s and United’s in that it only counts flight miles, and not other miles. AA is by far the most generous in counting all miles earned for million-miler status.

Unfortunately only elite qualfying miles count for Continental’s lifetime elite status-so award flights taken don’t count ;(

The most unique and intriguing part about Continental’s program is that it will give you the ability to grant million-miler status to a companion. I can only imagine what that status will fetch on ebay!

I came across Continental’s new million miler program while beta-testing the latest version of their website, scheduled to be deployed on the 14th. Here are some pictures showing the new program from the beta site.  As you can see, I’m not even in the ballpark…but if anyone who is needs a companion, just send me an email!

Another positive change coming on the 14th is the ability to see exit-row seat availability while searching for a flight, which on the current site is not possible:

United Raises Change Fee To $150, Adds Saturday Night Stay Requirement, Matches Double Elite Qualifying Miles Promo.

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

United will now charge a shocking $150 (plus fare difference) to change a non-refundable domestic ticket. In addition in order to get the cheapest fares they now require a Saturday night stay for all markets in which they don’t compete with a LCC (low-cost carrier).

Now we play the waiting game to see if the other majors match…
United sparked the industry to move from 2 to 1 free checked domestic bag back in February. Over the past few months US Airways, Delta, Northwest, and Continental (in that order) have all matched that policy.

United has also added their own double elite miles promotion.

Airlines rarely ever like to part with elite qualifying miles. Delta is giving them out like candy.

The “Big 6″ network carriers are sustained by their elite customers. These customers typically are willing to pay a significant premium to fly on their preferred carrier and have extreme brand loyalty. In return the airlines pamper them with goodies such as upgrades, tons of bonus miles when flying, enhanced mileage availability, premium seat availability, reduced fees, extra luggage allowances, priority customer service/security screening/boarding, etc, etc.

There has been no program devalued as quickly of late as Delta’s Skymiles. They have by far the worst mileage seat availability. They are the only network carrier that got rid of “last-seat” availability for “rule-buster” mileage tickets. They have added tons of new fees that have angered their elite travelers.

It won’t help matters that they are in the process of closing down quite a few of their airport lounges that premium customers demand. They are also closing down all of their BusinessElite lounges.

They are bleeding elite customers and can’t seem to find a carrier willing to merge with them.

In response they have unleashed unprecedented promos for elite miles in an effort to try and regrow a loyal customer base. It is a path fraught with peril. If current elite customers are angered by all of the new “elite-light” customers they may bolt to other carriers.

At any rate, whether you are gunning for bottom or top tier, with promotions such as double elite miles there’s never been a easier way to earn elite status than now. One RT flight from Atlanta to Tel Aviv is all it would take become elite until 02/10. Delta elite status is honored across the board on all SkyTeam alliance carriers, such as Air France, Continental, KLM, and Northwest. It will even exempt you (and possibly your companions) from new restrictive checked luggage rules on all of those carriers. (More on that in a future post) With elite-status matching you can even get other carriers with a better elite product to match your Delta status to their own equivalent status!

“How Do You Become An AAdvantage Lifetime Elite Member?”

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

lazecraze53 asked in a recent comment,

“I have been Gold on AAdvantage numerous times, how did you become a lifetime member ? And if you become a lifetime member could you move up to Platinum?”

There are 3 published levels of elite status on AA:

Gold-Requires 25,000 flight miles or 30 flight segments in a calendar year.
Platinum-Requires 50,000 flight miles or 60 flight segments in a calendar year.
Executive Platinum-Requires 100,000 flight miles or 100 flight segments in a calendar year.

Executive Platinum is generally regarded as the best elite published elite status of any domestic carrier, and is generally not attainable by any method except flying 100,000 miles or 100 flight segments.

AA has a few undocumented ways of attaining Gold and Platinum elite status.

One undocumented method of attaining elite status is via AA’s “challenge” by which you can attain Gold or Platinum elite status by flying as little as 5,000 Q-points in 90 days. I wrote about the challenge and Q-points 2 years ago, so there’s no reason to cover that topic again.

Another undocumented method: When you earn 1,000,000 AA miles you earn lifetime Gold elite status. In addition you also get 8 500-mile domestic upgrade stickers if you live in North America, or 4 one-way international upgrades certificates if you live outside North America.

When you earn 2,000,000 AA miles you earn lifetime Platinum elite status. In addition you also get 4 one-way international upgrades regardless of where you live.

AA is the only airline in the world that counts all miles towards million miler/lifetime elite status! Every other airline only counts actual “BIS” flight miles to attain lifetime elite status.

You can check your own progress towards lifetime status on AA.com.

It took AA about 3 months to send me my million miler package:

Into The Home Stretch!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

AA is the only remaining airline that still counts all mileage activity towards lifetime elite status.

United and Delta used to count all miles, but currently only count actual flown mileage for lifetime elite status.
Continental used to have a program that if you were a top-tier elite for 5 consecutive years you got lifetime top-tier status, alas Continental no longer offers any chance at becoming a lifetime elite today.

On AA every mile earned, even those from credit cards, is counted.
At 1,000,000 miles you get lifetime Gold Elite status and at 2,000,000 miles you get lifetime Platinum Elite status.
In addition you also get other nice goodies when you cross each million marker.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve redeemed miles, the only thing that matters is the “program to date miles.”

Today I finally entered the home stretch…I just hope they don’t pull the program before I cross the finish line!

You can buy 90 day elite status ranging from Silver to Platinum, for prices ranging from $200-$600, depending on whether you currently have any elite status on USAirways.

If within those 90 days you fly between 7,500 and 22,500 miles (depending on the elite level that you bought into) you will be able to keep the status until February 2009.

Shhh…Airline Elite Status Matching…

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

In the past I’ve written about shortcuts to elite status with AA and United, and about Airtran offering lifetime elite-status matches.(All accessible in the knowledgebase)

All of this stuff is unofficial-so YMMV-your mileage may vary, and you won’t find any of this information on the airline’s websites.

United is known to match up to 1P (mid-tier) status.
Send a copy of your current elite status card or statement to:
Mileage Plus Service Center
Attention: Premier Status Match
P.O. Box 28870
Tucson, AZ 85726

Or fax it to:
605-341-6140

It won’t hurt your case if you explain why you might switch your business to United.

Stay tuned for more airlines that offer status matching…

United Airlines Offers An Elite Challenge!

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I have blogged in the past about AA’s secret challenge program that is a fast track to Gold or Platinum Elite status.

United now is offering a similar program, although it differs in many details.

You can get 2P(Premier) or 1P (Premier Executive) status through the program.

To enroll call 1-800-421-4655 and ask to sign up for promo MPP597
The cost is $100.
Fly 6,250 EQM’s within 90 days of registration and you get 2P status.
Fly 12,500 EQM’s within 90 days of registration and you get 1P status.
Status lasts from the time when you complete the challenge until 02/08.

(For those of you not familiar with EQM’s it means elite qualifying miles. On united all fares earn 100% eqm’s except full fare coach, business, and first which earn 150% eqm’s. Basically if your flight is 10,000 miles and you’re in a regular coach fare you will get 10,000 EQM’s, if you are flying in first you will get 15,000 EQM’s.)

If people request it, I can make another post hammering out the exact details between the AA and UA challenges…
