Palm Releases Centro For AT&T!

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Palm finally got it right with the Centro. Its been a huge success on Sprint (its even been released in 3 colors to date!) I’ve written about my affinity for it in the past, so I won’t bore you guys again.

It was just released for AT&T. The color choice (White with lime green buttons) is suspect and the EDGE internet won’t help things out, but then again nobody signs up with a GSM provider for fast data speeds…

You can get one today at the Palm Store. They’re even currently running a promotion for free shipping on all phones and accessories!

Readers Share Their Experiences And Strategies For Getting Out Of Sprint Or Verizon For Free!

Monday, January 14th, 2008

D wrote in a comment on the “Get out of Sprint or Verizon for free” post,

“Well, I called and they “miraculously” found a contract that’s $10 cheaper than the last time I called… so it saves me $120 a year! Thanks Dan.”

Nobody ever said that you have to cancel, and a $120/year (plus tax!) bribe in order not to cancel would probably make most people stay put! Was this with Verizon or Sprint?

David wrote in a comment on the “Get out of Sprint or Verizon for free” post,

“I canceled verizon and I have a text messaging plan. I canceled within 5 minutes. I called from my other cell phone and refused to give them my name or cell number so they would not be able to notate my account. The CSR knew what i was trying to do and said it had no affect on me. I hung up and redialed and spoke to someone another nicer CSR.

1) I asked her if she was aware about the price increase. She said yes!
2) I asked her if she was aware that this was a breach in my contract and that i would be allowed to cancel my service with no ETF. She put me on hold and came back 3 minutes later and said i was correct.

THEN, i gave her my phone number and and she canceled my service.

Good luck to you all!!!”

I love stories with happy endings, and that’s a neat strategy that you used to get out-I’m sure others will find it useful as well!

Sprint And Verizon Raise Fees, Open Loophole To Cancel For Free…

Getting Out Of A Cell Phone Contract?

According to the terms of Sprint and Verizon’s service contracts if they change your rates, you have the right to cancel without paying an early termination fee.

You must actually cancel the service, you can’t just cancel your contract and keep the service on a month-to-month basis. You should be able to get a representative to allow you to port your number to another provider, just be sure that they notate the account that the ETF should be waived.

There is a blackout period with all carriers after you cancel service, so you won’t be able to cancel and then resign with the same company just to get a free phone.

It may take repeated calls to customer service until you find a rep willing to release you from your contract.

Be sure to make note of the rep’s ID number in case there are any problems after your service is canceled.

Sprint:
“Beginning January 1, 2008 Sprint will asses 2 new monthly charges per line. An administrative charge of $.75 and a regulatory charge of $.20 to help defray the cost on us that other telecommunications carriers charge Sprint…The Administrative Charge is not a tax and is not an amount we are required to collect from you by law.”

Verizon:
“If you are not currently subscribed to a Messaging Package, beginning March 2, 2008, the price for sending Text Messages to the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico – as well as the price for receiving Text Messages from anywhere – will increase from $0.15 to $0.20 per message per recipient….If you do subscribe to a Messaging Package, your package rates will stay the same.”

Poor Cell Phone Reception In Your House? Here’s The Solution To Your Problems!!!

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I was going to post this a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to test it out before writing about it.

Amazon now carries “Wireless Extenders Cell Phone Signal Booster”
The way it works is that you set up the antenna wherever you have the best signal, most likely outside an upstairs window or in your attic.
There is a wire that connects the antenna to the base system.
The base system is placed where you have the weakest cell phone signal and it repeats the good cell phone signal for 2,500 sq. ft.

I set this up in my house, and where I used to have 1-2 bars downstairs I now get 4-5 bars. Additionally I used to not have a signal in my basement, but now I do!

Is it worth $230? Try it out for yourself, if it doesn’t work out for you, you won’t be out a single penny!

There are 3 versions of this product.
-An 800MHz booster for Cingular/ATT, Verizon, and Alltel. This one retails for $299, and is on sale from Amazon for just $230 shipped.
-A 1900MHz booster for Sprint and T-Mobile. This one also retails for $299, and is on sale from Amazon for just $230 shipped.
-A 800MHz/1900MHz booster that works for all companies. This one retails for $399, but is currently not available from Amazon.

800MHz booster for Cingular/ATT, Verizon, and Alltel.

1900MHz booster for Sprint and T-Mobile.

Please Note:
-It is critical to follow the directions carefully for you to get the optimal signal boost!
-If you don’t have a cell phone signal anywhere in or around your house then this will not solve your problem!

A New Way How To Get Out Of Your Cell Phone Contract-Excessive Calls To Customer Service!

Friday, July 6th, 2007

“On June 29, 2007, Sprint sent letters notifying some customers that their service would be canceled by the end of July due to excessive calls to customer service.

“Our records indicate that over the past year, we have received frequent calls from you regarding your billing or other general account information,” the letter reads. “While we have worked to resolve your issues and questions to the best of our ability, the number of inquiries you have made to us during this time has led us to determine that we are unable to meet your current wireless needs.”

“Therefore after careful consideration, the decision has been made to terminate your wireless service agreement effective July 30, 2007.”

Subscribers who have gotten letters from Sprint terminating their service won’t have to pay the early termination fee…”

Reader Request: Brazilian Cell Phone Info!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Anon asked in a comment,
“Dan – quick question…
being that you are the Brazil maven…
I’m going to brazil this week for a wedding and I need a cell phone…
what’s my best bet?
Sterling electronics does not have rentals for brazil and I currently have a Sprint phone (no sim card)
any ideas?
thanks for your help!”

First of all, I’ll make the presumption that you are going to Brazil for the Slonim wedding-if so please send my regards to the family, especially Levi and Yehuda…

Photo: Yehuda Slonim(L) and I at the Lag Ba’omer Parade in S. Paulo, Brazil. Photo taken by Levi Slonim.

While there is CDMA service in Brazil with Vivo, they won’t activate your Sprint phone.

You have a couple options.

Option 1:
If you just want to be able to speak with one person back home then just sign up 2 phones for Nextel’s unlimited international direct connect plan.
They have a free 30-day trial, and you can talk to each other for as long as you’d like with the push of a button.

I thank G-d that I brought one with me during my past trip-and I wouldn’t go back to Brazil without one.

Option 2:
If you need to speak to multiple people in the US who don’t have Nextel you will need to buy (or borrow from someone) an unlocked world phone.
The reason that you need a world phone is because the GSM bands that we use here are different than in the rest of the world.
A regular unlocked phone in the US will only work on 850/1900 bands.
In Brazil they use the 1800 band of GSM service.
You can check which bands a phone has by searching the model number on a website like phonescoop.com
You can check if a phone is unlocked by sticking in 2 different companies’ SIM cards and seeing if the phone works.

The cheapest company to sign up with is TIM.
They have stores in every shopping mall in Brazil.
The sim card is 19 Reais(about US$10) and includes R$5 of talk time.

To make international calls you will need a “cartão internacional,” an international calling card.

You can pick a card up at most of the newspaper/magazine stands that line the streets.

The calling card will cost between R$25-R$50.
The card will have 2 access numbers on it.
One is an 0-800 number, which is toll free.
When you use this number it will not cost any cell minutes, but it will cost a lot more card minutes.
To call to the US with the 0-800 number will probably be about R$1.50/minute.

Here is a link, in Portuguese, for a good international calling card:
www.speakmax.com.br

The local access number will allow to talk to the US for very cheap-about R$0.09/minute, but you will need to buy an additional TIM recharge card for more cell minutes.

You can pick up TIM recharge cards at most of the newspaper/magazine stands, cards come in denominations from R$10-R$100, and local minutes are about R$1.30

Also incoming calls-even from the US are always free with TIM!

Hope this helps…

If you need more info, feel free to email me, and I can hook you up with some of my amigos brasileiros, who would be more than happy to take to you around town and help you out!
Also don’t miss out on some of the amazing restaurant deals you can get down there! (But don’t try smuggling back kosher mcdonalds stuff either)

Have a safe trip-Boa Viagem!
