Roundup Of Silvercar Promo Codes For New And Existing Renters, 2 Day Audi Rental From $37 For New Renters, $49 September Special

Thursday, September 15th, 2016

About Silvercar:

Silvercar is a new-age car rental company. Since I first wrote about Silvercar I’ve received lots of rave reviews from readers thanking me for introducing them to Silvercar. Share your experience in the comments!

I rented from them in Miami on a 2 day trip last August, and though the weather wasn’t, the car rental was a real treat. I called them upon landing and they picked me up from the terminal so that I was able to avoid taking the train to them. After the rental they dropped me off in my rental car right back to the terminal.

The only car they rent is the fun to drive, all-wheel drive Audi A4. It comes with built-in GPS, satellite radio, bluetooth, leather seats, and even a free WiFi hotspot. Unlimited miles are included in every rental.

You can even request car seats at no additional charge!

You can rent from Silvercar as long as you are at least 22 years old with no underage fees.

I rented a car from Avis in Miami earlier last year and got hit with a $17.20 bill for a two 70 cent tolls that I apparently passed on SR112. That’s $1.40 for the tolls and $15.80 for an “eToll Convenience Fee.” Convenient for whom is the question?

Silvercar only passes on the toll itself, no convenience fees!

If you don’t refill the fuel you’ll only be charged a $5 flat rate fee on top of the actual local price of the gas needed to fill up the car. No need to jeopardize missing your flight just to avoid paying $10/gallon for fuel.

Both AMEX and Chase cover the CDW insurance for a Audi A4, just select personal coverage when renting.

You only pay when you pickup the car, nothing is charged beforehand and there are no cancellation fees ever.

Daily Getaway For 5/2: Avis Rental Certificates And Chairman’s Status

Monday, May 2nd, 2016

With Daily Getaways you can purchase discounted travel packages, but you have to be really quick.  At 1pm EDT every weekday from now through 5/4 there is a new offering. The best deals will sell out in seconds, so you need to be waiting on the page at 12:59pm and refreshing the page.

Avis has 2 packages for sale today:

1. One day premium car rental vouchers for $30.

2. Chairman’s status for $1,115

-The vouchers are a mixed bag. I’ve used them in the past on trips to Vancouver and Banff when paid rates were nearly $100 per day where the value has been excellent. However I’ve also run into blackout dates and Avis doesn’t publish their blackout dates. You need to call to make a reservation with the coupon to find out if your dates are blacked out. The vouchers are valid in the US and Canada for rentals through 5/31/17, however they are not valid in the NYC metro area. You won’t pay percentage based taxes, but you do pay daily rental car surcharges that vary at airport locations. You can reserve up to a premium (group G car). Using a voucher likely means that you forfeit your credit card CDW insurance, therefore I only hand in the voucher at the end of the rental assuming no damage was done. It’s a bit of a pain and requires that you allow extra time when returning a car. You can use up to 7 vouchers on a rental and you can buy up to 7 vouchers per order/credit card from Daily Getaways. In summary, buy these with your eyes wide open, you may get an incredible value or you may get burned.

-Chairman’s status is amazing. You can get cars delivered and picked up from your house for free and you get driven back to the terminal when returning cars to the airport. Oddly though they don’t typically drop off your car to the terminal. Upgrades from intermediate to luxury cars are free, though specialty cars are excluded from the upgrade pool. You pay market rate for gas. Is that worth $1,115 for just 12 months of service? Unless you rent cars extremely frequently you would be much better off just paying for upgrades or using Silvercar where available. The status expires 5/31/17.

Daily Getaway For 4/22: Discounted Hertz Points

Friday, April 22nd, 2016

Daily Getaways Linky

With Daily Getaways you can purchase discounted travel packages, but you have to be really quick.  At 1pm EDT every weekday from now through 5/6 there is a new offering. The best deals will sell out in seconds, so you need to be waiting on the page at 12:59pm and refreshing the page. Be sure to have a Hertz number handy.

There are 3 Hertz packages that will be available to purchase at 1pm:

1. 5,500 points for $250 (4.55 cents per point)

2. 13,200 points for $560 (4.24 cents per point)

3. 16,500 points for $698 (4.23 cents per point)

Here is the Hertz award chart.

-A free week rental is 2,750 points, so package 1 would be enough for 2 weeks of rentals at a cost of $17.86 per day.

-Package 2 would be enough points for 4 free weeks (11K) and a 4 day rental over a weekend (2.2K).  That’s 32 rental days at a cost of $17.50 per day.

Package 2 is also enough for two 4 day weekend rentals of a prestige collection car. That’s 8 days of rentals at a cost of $70 per day.

-A free rental week of a prestige collection car is 8,250 points, so package 3 would be enough for 2 weeks of rentals at a cost of $49.85 per day.

Package 3 is also enough for 6 weeks of free rentals. That’s 42 rental days at a cost of $16.62 per day.

There are blackout dates for these awards, though you can use double points to rent during a blackout as well.

Hertz points don’t expire as long as you have earned or redeemed points on a rental every 24 months.

Will you try to buy?  Or are these packages too much effort for too little reward? For many locations you may be better off spending the time figuring out the lowest Priceline bid that they would accept for your rental…

Dirt Cheap Car Rentals In Canada Via Costco Travel

Costco Travel is a good place to search for car rentals in general, especially for one-way rentals. Right now they have some great rates for car rentals in Canada, where rentals are typically quite pricey.

A Costco membership is required, though a member can book the car rental for someone else.

A rental from this Friday to Sunday in Toronto in CAD $6.17 (USD$4.70):

In Vancouver it’s CAD$10 and in Montreal it’s CAD $17.20.

Or for example a 1 week rental from this Sunday through next Sunday is CAD$111 (USD$84) in Vancouver and CAD$119 in Toronto.

Roundup Of Current Silvercar Deals; 2 Day Audi Rental In NYC For $69.71 With Tax For New Renters

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015

About Silvercar:

Silvercar is a new-age car rental company. Since I first wrote about Silvercar I’ve received lots of rave reviews from readers thanking me for introducing them to Silvercar. Share your experience in the comments!

I rented from them in Miami on a 2 day trip in August and though the weather wasn’t, the car rental was a real treat. I called them upon landing and they picked me up from the terminal so that I was able to avoid taking the train to them. After the rental they dropped me off in my rental car right back to the terminal. Plus the price couldn’t be beat!

The only car they rent is the fun to drive, all-wheel drive Audi A4. It comes with built-in GPS, satellite radio, bluetooth, leather seats, and even a free WiFi hotspot. Unlimited miles are included in every rental.

You can rent from Silvercar as long as you are at least 22 years old with no underage fees.

I rented a car from Avis in Miami earlier this year and got hit with a $17.20 bill for a two 70 cent tolls that I apparently passed on SR112.

Both AMEX and Chase cover the CDW insurance for a Audi A4, but it’s always a good idea to confirm and get things in writing before renting.

You only pay when you pickup the car, nothing is charged beforehand and there are no cancellation fees ever.

Signup offer:

-If you signup via my referral link here you and I will both get $25 after you complete your first rental with my referral code, DELEFF
The $25 will sent to you via Paypal after your rental.

-Or for example a 2 day rental in Los Angeles from November 8-10 would cost $77.63 ($69 plus $8.63 tax) after 1 free day. Plus you’ll get $25 back after the rental, dropping the effective cost to just $52.63 for 2 days.

Since I first wrote about Silvercar I’ve received lots of rave reviews from readers thanking me for introducing them to Silvercar. Share your experience in the comments!

One of my few critiques of Silvercar was that they required drivers to be 25, but as I wrote last week, they have lowered that age to 22 without any additional fees.  They’re opening in Fort Lauderdale tomorrow and in Chicago in June with more locations to follow!

There are 3 Hertz packages that will be available to purchase at 1pm:

1. 5,500 points for $252 (4.58 cents per point)

2. 13,200 points for $428 (3.24 cents per point)

3. 16,500 points for $698 (4.23 cents per point)

Here is the Hertz award chart.

-A free week rental is 2,750 points, so package 1 would be enough for 2 weeks of rentals at a cost of $18 per day.

-Package 2 would be enough points for 4 free weeks (11K) and a 4 day rental over a weekend (2.2K).  That’s 32 rental days at a cost of $13.38 per day.

Package 2 is also enough for two 4 day weekend rentals of a prestige collection car. That’s 8 days of rentals at a cost of $53.50 per day.

There are a few blackout dates for these awards, though you can use double points to rent during a blackout as well.

You’ll need to be waiting on the page wearing out your F5 key to be able to grab one of these as soon as the buy now button appears at 1pm.
And don’t forget to have your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number handy.

Package #2 will be the hardest to get as it has the lowest cost per point and it has the fewest available packages for sale.

Hertz points don’t expire as long as you have activity every 24 months.

Will you try to buy?  Or are these packages too much effort for too little reward?  For many locations you may be better off spending the time figuring out the lowest Priceline bid that they would accept for your rental…

Rent An Audi From Silvercar In April For $49/Day Or Less, Plus Get $25 Cash After Completing Your First Rental

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015

Silvercar is a new-age car rental company.

The only car they rent is the all-wheel drive Audi A4. It comes with built-in GPS, satellite radio, bluetooth, leather seats, and even a free WiFi hotspot. Unlimited miles are included in every rental.

I rented a car from Avis in Miami earlier this year and got hit with a $17.20 bill for a two 70 cent tolls that I apparently passed on SR112.  That’s $1.40 for the tolls and $15.80 for an “eToll Convenience Fee.” Convenient for whom is the question?

Silvercar only passes on the toll itself, no convenience fees.

If you don’t refill the fuel you’ll only be charged a $5 flat rate fee on top of the actual local price of the gas needed to fill up the car. No need to jeopardize missing your flight just to avoid paying $10/gallon for fuel.

At airports where Silvercar is offsite you’ll get picked up and dropped off at the airport in an Audi as well.

Alas Silvercar is only for those 25 or older. Would have been nice if they dropped that to a more reasonable 21 while they are shaking things up anyway.

If you signup via my referral link here you and I will both get $25 after you complete your first rental.  The $25 will sent to you via Paypal after your rental.

-With this link you can rent a car in April for just $49/day. As long as the rental begins in April that rate will extend into May as well. Plus you’ll get $25 back after your first rental.

-With this link you can save $50 off your first rental that’s at least 2 days long.  This is valid for rentals anytime.  For example a 2 day rental in Los Angeles from April 26-28 would cost $75.89 with tax after the $50 off.  Plus you’ll get $25 back after the rental, dropping the effective cost to just $50.89 for 2 days.

Silvercar is currently located in:
Austin/AUS
Dallas/DAL
Dallas/DFW
Denver/DEN
Los Angeles/LAX
Miami/MIA
Phoenix/PHX
San Francisco/SFO

Renting A Car With A Credit Card? Here’s What You Need To Know About Insurance.

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

-Find more posts like this by clicking on the “Credit Card Posts” tab and find credit card offers in the “Credit Cards” tab above of the DansDeals banner at the top of this site.
————————————————————————-

Car rental companies love to upsell insurance options when you rent a car.

Most are bogus. but 2 are legitimate. There’s liability insurance and there’s the collision damage waiver insurance or CDW.

No credit card covers liability insurance.
When you drive in the USA you need to have liability coverage which covers damage to other people and their property. If you own a car and are insured you’ll be covered when you rent a car in the US, so there’s no need to take out liability insurance. If you don’t own a car you can rely on the state minimum liability that the car rental agencies are required to provide free of charge. However you can be on the hook if you cause damage in excess of the minimum requirement, so you may want to take out that coverage if you don’t have a personal car insurance policy. Note that in California and Texas there is no state minimum liability, so any damage you cause will be your responsibility.

In some countries, like Israel and Mexico, you are always required to pay for liability insurance.

Many credit cards provide CDW insurance. That covers damage that occurs to your rental car. However most cards only provide secondary coverage in your home country, which means that if you have your own car insurance you would have to file a claim with them and only if they deny it will the credit card cover the damage.

AMEX cards have the option to add a premium car rental insurance option that changes coverage from secondary to primary, but that will set you back about $20 per rental.

2 popular Chase cards provide free primary CDW coverage even in your home country, the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase United Explorer. If you damage your rental car then those cards will cover the damage without having to file a claim with your personal auto insurance policy.

Both cards have no foreign transaction fees.
The Sapphire Preferred also gives double points on car rentals, making it the best card to use when renting a car anywhere in the world.

Most cards exclude CDW coverage in select countries such as Israel and Jamaica.  All Chase cards provide coverage worldwide, including Israel.  Just call the number on the back of your card to be connected with the CDW insurance department who can provide you with a letter of coverage to provide the car rental agency in any country that you specify.

In a country like Israel you’ll still need to purchase liability insurance, but you won’t have to pay the CDW insurance.  Which is a good thing as the basic CDW insurance in Israel comes with a high deductible, so even if you pay the daily CDW fee you may still wind up paying for the small scratches that car rental companies in Israel love to charge to everyone without ever repainting their cars.

With CDW coverage insurance from your credit card there is no deductible as long as you decline to take out the CDW coverage from the car rental agency.  You won’t be responsible for a thing as long as you use the right card.

Hertz Daily Getaway Deal Is Much Better Than It Looks…Though Good Luck Buying One

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

Related: Highlights Of Daily Getaways 2014
——————————————————
Daily Getaways started yesterday though today is the first decent deal.

It’s actually a much better deal than it looks like at first glance.
Here is the Hertz award chart.

There are 3 packages available:

1. 5,500 Hertz points (marketed as a “1-Week Hertz Standard Vehicle”) is $252 (4.58 cents per point) with the automatic 10% off for using an AMEX.  (45 packages for sale)

Now here’s the thing, they’re actually giving an example using Hertz’s anytime award chart which comes out to $36 per day on a weekly rental.
The truth is that the regular award chart has very few blackout dates and a week rental using that chart is just 2,750 points, so your cost with this package will be just $18 per day.
Additionally they give the example of a standard vehicle, when it’s the same amount of points for a premium vehicle!
Note that taxes are extra, and they can add up at some highly taxed airport locations.

You can also use 4,400 points for a weekly rental of a specialty vehicle like a minivan or convertible.

2. 13,200 Hertz points (marketed as a “Hertz Prestige Collection Weekend”) is $427.50 (3.24 cents per point) with the 10% off. (35 packages for sale)

Again, that’s the anytime rate for a 4 day weekend for a prestige car which comes out to $106.88 per day on a 4 day weekend rental. The standard 4 day weekend weekend rate with a few blackout dates is:
-6,600 points for Prestige (Mercedes, Infiniti, Cadillac, etc) which would be $53.44 per day.
-3,300 points for specialty (Minivan, convertible, etc) which would be $26.72 per day.
-2,200 points for premium which would be $17.81 per day.

Of course you can also use the 13,200 points for a weekly rental.  It’s enough for 3 weeks of a Minivan or Convertible at $20.38 per day.

3. 16,500 Hertz points (marketed as a “1-Week Hertz Prestige Collection”) is $697.50 (4.23 cents per point) with the 10% off. (50 packages for sale)

Once again, that’s the anytime rate for a week which would be $99.64 per day. The standard rate for a weekly prestige rental is 8,250 points which would be $49.82 per day.

Of course you can also use the 16,500 points for a premium car.  It’s enough for 6 weeks at $16.61 per day. Or use it for anything else on the Hertz award chart.

You’ll need to be waiting on the page wearing out your F5 key to be able to grab one of these as soon as the buy now button appears at 1pm.
And don’t forget to have your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number handy.

Many will try, few will get get, though I did get successfully purchase a Hertz package last year.  Package #2 will probably be the hardest to get as it has the lowest cost per point and it has the fewest available packages for sale.

Will you try to buy?  Or are these packages too much effort for too little reward?  The truth is for many locations you’ll probably be better off spending the time figuring out the lowest Priceline bid for your rental.

Chase Eliminates Excluded Car Rental Countries; Israel Now Covered On All Chase Credit Cards!

Sunday, January 26th, 2014

Update: 01/26/14: Some people reported problems getting the car rental agency in Israel to waive the CDW purchase requirement because the Chase letter of coverage didn’t specifically mention that Israel was included.

I’m happy to report that you can now request a letter that specifically states that coverage in Israel is included.  Just call the number on the back of your card to be forwarded to the department that can instantly email you a letter of coverage.  You can also try calling 888-880-5844 to get that letter of coverage. That number is intended for the United card but should work for all Chase cards.

————————————————————–

Originally posted on 11/01/13:

Effective today all Chase cards, Visa or Mastercard, now offer free car rental CDW insurance worldwide!  Gone are the exclusions on rentals in countries like Israel, Ireland, and Jamaica.

CDW covers any damage or theft to your rental car.

If you renting a car outside of your home country you will receive free primary coverage on rentals of up to 31 days, so Chase will cover you even if you have your own insurance without having to file a claim with your own insurance.

Additionally Chase will now provide primary coverage on leisure rentals on business cards when renting outside of your home country.

Additional drivers that are listed on the contract are covered as well.

Secondary cardholders also get primary coverage when they rent.

Note that in Israel even if you decline the CDW all agencies still require to buy liability insurance for damage to other property or people.  But you’ll still save money by having a card that provides its own CDW coverage.  Israeli car rental agencies are notorious for charging over and over again for the same scratch.  Even if you buy the CDW from the car rental agency you’ll still have to pay for the scratch as they have a high deductible on their own CDW coverage.  When you use your Chase card and decline the car rental agency’s CDW coverage you’ll have zero deductible.  If you do not decline the car rental’s CDW coverage then your credit card will not cover your rental.

-The best card to rent a car with abroad is the Chase Sapphire Preferred. It offers 2.14 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on all dining and travel expenses, including car rentals. It also has no foreign exchange fees, so you’ll always get the best possible exchange rate without any fees.  You’ll have free primary coverage when renting anywhere outside of your home country and secondary coverage to your own insurance when renting within your home country.  If you don’t have your own car insurance policy then coverage is primary worldwide.

-When renting within the US the United Explorer card is the way to go thanks to its primary coverage. It also is one of the only cards that comes with primary rental car CDW insurance in the US.  Almost every other card only has secondary coverage when you rent a car in your home country. This means that if you damage your rental vehicle you must file the claim with your own personal insurance policy first, and only if they won’t cover the damage will the credit card cover the damage.

Of course if you do rent on a United card and you return the car with no damage you can have the car rental agency counter change the card to Sapphire Preferred so that you get the 2.14 points per dollar spent.

Sample Chase cards that have no foreign exchange fees:

-Chase Sapphire Preferred
-United Explorer card
Chase Ink Plus
Chase Ink Bold
Chase British Airways
-Chase Marriott Premier
-Chase Southwest Premier

Hertz Israel Now Requiring Proof Of Credit Card Insurance Coverage

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

Effective immediately Hertz in Israel is requiring you to furnish a letter of coverage stating that your credit card covers car rental CDW insurance.  If you don’t have that letter you will be compelled to purchase CDW from Hertz. Worse than that, like all CDW policies sold in Israel, the Hertz provided CDW comes with a deductible that you will have to pay on top of the daily CDW coverage in case of any alleged damages. Plus your credit card will not cover CDW if you do not decline the car rental agency CDW coverage.

Car rental companies in Israel love to ding people with alleged scratches and dings whether they caused the damage or not. My assumption is that this is likely the reason Israel is one of just 3 countries in the world that is excluded from most credit card coverage. To save yourself a lot of headache always take extensive pictures of your rental car while it’s still on the lot and make sure the agent signs off on every miniscule scratch on the car.

To get a letter of coverage you can call World Mastercard at 800-622-7747 and then push prompts 1, 1, and 3 to speak to someone.

It used to be that all World Mastercards covered CDW in Israel even though almost every other credit card excludes coverage in Israel, Ireland, and Jamaica.

The reason for the requirement now is due to numerous World Mastercards no longer covering Israel including Chase United, Chase Ink, Barclays Arrivals, and Barclays USAirways.

Cards that currently still provide coverage include the Sapphire World Mastercard.  There’s no public link for the Sapphire World Mastercard but if you call or send a secure message to Chase they can still convert the Sapphire Preferred Visa or the Sapphire Non-Preferred Visa into a World Mastercard. The Preferred card card gives 2.14 points per dollar on all dining and travel including car rentals and it has no foreign exchange fees, making it the best card to use for rentals in Israel.  The non-preferred version gives 1 point per dollar and has a 3% foreign exchange fee.

Those World Mastercards cover up to $50,000 in damages to your rental car for rentals up to 31 days in length.

Coverage is primary if your own personal auto insurance does not cover rentals outside of the USA.  I called Geico and they confirmed that on my policy I’m only covered for rentals in the USA, so coverage from the World Mastercard anywhere else in the world is primary.  This means that the credit card will pay for damages without having to get your personal insurance involved which can raise your premiums.

It’s worth noting that the Discover cards like the Discover IT card cover CDW in Israel as well and they don’t charge a foreign exchange fee. However they limit their total coverage to $25,000 so if you wreck your rental car you may be on the hook for damages as cars in Israel typically cost at least double what they do in the US.  However for regular scratches and dents this should work just fine.

Even if your card does give CDW coverage agencies in Israel require you to purchase liability insurance for damages caused to other people as CDW only covers damages to your own vehicle.  Reputable agents like Noach build this into their quote but most prices online that you’ll find do not include this daily fee.

As far as rentals in the US go, if you have your own policy you’ll most definitely want to rent on the United Explorer card as it is one of the few cards that give free primary CDW coverage.  Almost every other credit card will not cover damages if you have a personal car insurance policy.

$29.70 For Avis Premium Car Rental Certificates

Friday, June 21st, 2013

Update, 3:45pm: Sold Out!

——————————————————————

$29.70 For Avis Premium Car Rental Certificates

I’ve been avoiding posting these Daily Getaway deals since they usually sell out in a split second, but surprisingly this one is still open.

With an AMEX card you’ll automatically get 10% off every deal, so you can purchase these Avis certs for $29.70 each and they’re good in the US and Canada for a Premium (Group G) car. These certs are not valid in NY metro and are not valid for one-way rentals. There are some blackout dates around holiday times.

The nice thing is that you won’t pay any percentage based taxes with these certs but you will pay any facility fees.

You can purchase up to 7 certs on a credit card and you can use up to 7 certs on a single rental.

The certs will expire 03/31/14.

Note that your credit card won’t cover the CDW insurance if you pay with these so my strategy is to reserve with the coupon code but to hand them in only after the rental is complete and there is no damage to the car.  If you did damage the car then just leave the rental on the credit card you used to reserve the car with.
