New AMEX Charge Card: Premier Rewards Gold Card!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

AMEX Premier Rewards Gold Charge Card Linky

This is a brand new card offering from AMEX.  You will get the signup bonus for this card even if you have had other AMEX cards in the past. (Generally speaking I have never had a problem churning AMEX charge cards and have gotten multiple signup bonuses on the same AMEX charge card in the past)

The card comes with 15,000 AMEX MR points after you spend $1,000 on the card within the first 3 months of having the card.  Those points can generally be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to these airlines or at varying ratios to these hotel programs.

You get 3 points for every dollar spent on airfare, 2 points for every dollar spent on gas or groceries, and a point per dollar everywhere else.

You also get 15,000 bonus MR points for spending $30,000 in a calendar year.

The card also comes with a myriad of other buyer protections and insurances.

The annual fee is currently waived for the first year, so go on and grab those signup bonus points while this card is still free for the first year!

UPDATE: Delta has taken this promotion down from their website today! Luckily I saved a copy of it!

Delta Promotion Part 1

Delta Promotion Part 2

Delta Promotion Part 3

Nobody knows what is going on right now with the promotion but its possible that they will change the terms of it. However anyone that already registered under the old terms should be OK. For anyone that wants to contact Delta about the promotion it says to refer Delta representatives to promotion 97062124.

Answers to people’s questions from the comments:
General: This promotion is valid for transfers into Delta until 12/31. There are many partners besides for Starwood that qualify for the promo, read the fine print on the bottom of the offer for the whole listing.

You can transfer a maximum of 27,000 Starpoints into Delta per day, so you will want to just do one 20,000 Starpoint transfer per today in order to maximize both the Starwood 25% and Delta 150% bonus.

The 150% bonus points will likely not post to your Delta account until sometime after the promotion end date of 12/31/08! So you will first get the 25,000 Skymiles for the 20,000 Starpoint transfer, and then after the Delta promotion ends you will get the 150% bonus of 37,500 Skymiles.

Here is Delta’s Mileage chart for all award redemptions.

Q: How many miles does Delta charge to go to Israel?
A: Delta is the only airline that has 3-tier mileage pricing. When few seats on the plane are sold there is low availability, normally when the plane is filling up there is medium availability, and there is always high availability.

Delta coach to Israel, each way:
Low=40,000
Medium=65,000
High=95,000

Delta BusinessElite to Israel, each way:
Low=60,000
Medium=115,000
High=185,000

Q: Is it worth changing all starwood points to delta miles???
A: Good question! Starwood points are extremely valuable, but getting over 3 Delta miles for each Starpoint is quite tempting! Ultimately it boils down to how you personally value your Starpoints and Skymiles, and that will be different for everyone.

Q: Can i transfer the points now without booking a ticket?
A: Of course! The Delta Skymiles will be waiting for you when you are ready!

Q: Can I transfer my Northwest miles to Delta now that they are merged, or does that happen automatically? If I can, I wonder if I can get this bonus?
A: They can’t be transferred, it will be merged automatically, most likely at some point over the next year.

Q: Do you know if you can then transfer Delta miles to any other airline?
A: I don’t know of any method of transferring out Delta miles-you’ll have to use them for flights on Delta or their partners!

Q: Do delta skymiles expire if i transfer to them?
A: Yes, you must have earning or spending activity in the account every 2 years to keep them from expiring.

Q: Do you actually have to use the skymiles before December 31, or just transfer them by then?
A: Transfer by then, the miles are then valid forever as long as you have activity in your Skymiles account every 2 years.

Q: If I open a starwoods card now, will I get the 10k bonus points in time to use for this promotion?
A: Under normal conditions you should be able to apply today, use the card once, and get the points before 12/31. However sometimes AMEX doesn’t give the points on the first statement, in which case you would have to call them up and try to convince them to push the points over before waiting for the next statement.

Q: How do i transfer now after i signed up with delta???
A: Go to spg.com, login to your Starpoints account and go to redeem Starpoints.

Q: Will I be able to get Delta skymiles and then transfer them to Continental miles?
A: No, but you can use Delta miles to travel on Continental, or any other Delta partner airline.

Q: What about if i only have 15,000 starwood points? would that be worth transferring?
A: You would not get the 25% Starwood bonus, so you would get a total of 37,500 Skymiles. By transferring just 5,000 more Starpoints you get 25,000 more Skymiles! Go apply for another Starwood card today-or go buy money from the mint!

Q: I clicked on the linky and I filled in my name, e-mail and skymiles number in the register box. now it says, “You have successfully registered”. Now what?

A: Now you’re registered! All you have to do now is transfer your Starpoints!

Q: If don’t have any plans to travel in the near future (maybe Florida), is it still worth it to transfer my starwood points to skymiles & let it sit there till I want to travel?

A: Do the math and figure out if you’ll get greater value out of 20,000 Starwood or 62,500 Delta and that will be the answer!

Q: If I remember correctly, didn’t you once post that you can fly to Israel with about 55k starwood points? If so, how?
A: You’re looking for S.B.S.’s famous “Using Starwood Starpoints To Get To Israel PDF Guide”

Q: So i just registered for the promotion, do i need to wait , or can i just go into spg.com and transfer now?
A: Transfer away!

Q: Will the recent merger of NWA/Delta affect Skymiles in any way? Will I regret switching the points to miles?
A: The Skymiles program will have to be realigned with the Worldperks program, but I wouldn’t expect any massive changes.

AMEX Platinum: The Grandaddy Of Credit Cards!

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Update: You can read about all of the card benefits here, but remember to apply via the link in this post in order to get the 25,000 AMEX MR points (The link on the card benefits page offers no signup bonus at all!)!

AMEX Platinum 25K MR Points Offer Linky

The AMEX Platinum charge card is the best credit card that exists today.  Not for spending mind you (those honors go to the Starwood AMEX), but for the benefits provided.

Yes, this card costs a whopping $450/year, but you can get far more than that back out of it (Especially if you find 4 people to split it with!)

Right now for the first time ever there is a public offer to get 25,000 AMEX MR Points for applying for the card and spending $1,000 on it within 3 months of receiving it.  25,000 AMEX points can be transferred to airlines like fuel-surchargeless Continental for a free domestic ticket, or it will get you halfway to the 50,000 miles required to get to Israel on Alitalia (and Alitalia will let you fly for the same amount of miles to Israel non-stop on Skyteam partners Continental or Delta).

So, what do you get for $450 (Besides for the signup bonus)? Here are just some of the benefits:

  • Unlimited free lounge access for you and your spouse and kids, or for you and 2 companions when flying with:

AA: AAdmiral’s Club

Continental: President’s Club

Delta: Crown Room Club

Northwest: WorldClub

Hate air travel? Hint: It’s probably because you don’t have lounge access!

  • Friends fly free!

For 4 times every calender year you can take a companion with you for free on a domestic ticket as long as you book through AMEX and your fare is at least $299 (not hard to do these days!)

If the lowest available fare is $250 they can adjust it to $299 to get you the free ticket!

You can also use this program to Hawaii and Alaska, but the minimum qualifying fare is $699 from the west coast and $899 from everywhere else.

Plus if you apply for this card now you can use this service 8 times even if you cancel the card before the annual fee comes due again next July, due the calender year system that they use!

  • Give an AMEX Platinum to 3 other people for one fee!

With the AMEX Platinum consumer card (unlike the platinum business card) you can add 3 other people to your account for $175.  Each of these cardholders will receive all of the benefits of having the card, such as lounge access, and each one will also get 4 more free companion tickets per year!  The fee is $175 regardless of if you have 1, 2, or 3 additional cardholders.

  • Lose something? It’s covered!

If you lose an item within 3 months of purchasing it, just let AMEX know about it within a month after the loss, fax them your receipt, and they will immediately issue a refund for the item! This protection is for items up to $10,000, and for up to $50,000 in claims per calender year.  No police report or any other dirty work is required!

  • Fine Hotels and Resorts Benefit Program

Book a room at any of the 600+ Fine Hotels and Resorts worldwide and you’ll receive room upgrades, 4pm late checkout,  and other special benefits and treatments.

  • 24/7 Platinum Concierge

Need hard-to-get reservations, trip advice, or event planning? These guys will take care of it!

  • Complimentary Starwood Gold Elite Status

This normally requires 25 paid nights in Starwood hotels or $30,000 spent in a calender year on the Starwood AMEX.

It gets you complimentary upgrades at Starwood hotels, 4pm late checkout time, and bonus Starpoints when staying at Starwood hotels.

  • Car Rental Elite Status

Get elite rental status at Avis, Hertz, and National.

  • Baggage protection:

Up to $3,000 in coverage for loss or damage to your checked or carry-on baggage when flying!

  • Complimentary Membership Rewards First membership

Expanded access to AMEX’s luxury reward options.

  • Premium Seats program:

Get access to choice seats at sports and entertainment events in NYC and LA.

  • Event ticket protection (Not available for NYC residents)

Get a refund on event tickets (even when bought from scalpers) if you lose the ticket, have a medical emergency, have an transprtation accident, have jury duty, and for many other scenarios.

  • No Pre-set Spending Limit.

There is no credit limit on this card!

  • By Invitation Only Events

Get access to exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime events available only to Platinum Card members!

Plus the AMEX Plat has many, many other benefits and protections!

With the new Fico ‘08 algorithm, being an additional cardholder supposedly no longer benefits your credit score in any way. It will show up on your credit report, but it is no longer calculated in the score.

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Citing skyrocketing gas prices, AMEX has cut the cash rebate as of this morning for new applicants for the SimplyCash card from 5% to 3%. The gas rebate on the Costco AMEX Business Card remains at 5%, but that will probably change soon as well, so apply now to get locked in at 5% off of gas!!!

You need to have a Costco membership to get either of these cards. There is no annual fee for either of the cards with a paid Costco membership.

Update 2: The AMEX Simply Cash card’s gas rebate will soon be reduced to 3% automatic cash back.  If you apply right now you will be grandfathered and will receive 5% automatic cash back on gas for at least 12 months! You will receive a letter regarding any changes to your card’s features approximately 60 days before any changes takes place.

AMEX Online Services: How AMEX Is Head And Shoulders Above Their Competitors.

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

You must create an online account at americanexpress.com and register your AMEX cards before you can use these services.

AMEX offers an array of powerful online services that no other credit card company comes close to offering. These include:

Credit card disputes: If you’ve ever disputed a charge on a Visa or Mastercard you know how big of a hassle it is. You have to snail mail lots of paperwork over to them and then keep harassing them to find out what the status of the dispute is. I’ve had some disputes with Visa/Mastercard stretch out over a year because of the cumbersome process.

With AMEX filing a credit card dispute is simple, and they are far more likely to rule in your favor that any other credit card. If a company gives you a hard time with a return or rebate then AMEX will almost always step up to the plate and refund your money!

Here’s how to do it without ever having to pick up the phone or file paperwork:

1. Logon to your AMEX account online at americanexpress.com

2. Click on the credit card on which you want to dispute a charge.

3. Click on recent activity.

4. If the item you wish to dispute is listed under recent activity then scroll down to the bottom of the list of transactions and click on “Dispute a Charge/Check Dispute Status.” If the item you wish to dispute is not listed under recent activity then find the statement on which the charge appears by adjusting the time period above the list of transactions.

5. Follow the instructions in order to file a chargeback.

Credit line increases:

1. Logon to your AMEX account online at americanexpress.com

2. On the right-hand side of the page is “Account services,” click on “See all account services”

3. Click on the credit card on which you want to increase the credit limit.

4. Click on “Credit and Balance Transfers”

5. Click on “Increase your line of credit”

6. Enter in your new desired credit limit and your annual income and you will get an instant decision!

Credit line reallocations:

1. Logon to your AMEX account online at americanexpress.com

3. Click on the credit card on which you want to increase the credit limit.

4. Click on “Credit and Balance Transfers”

5. Click on “Reallocate your line of credit”

You can now swap the credit limits between all of your AMEX cards, including personal and business credit cards! As long as the new total credit line is the same as you existing one the credit line reallocation will be instantaneous!

William Sanders, Starwood’s “online guest feedback coordinator”, has confirmed that there have been issues with AMEX not properly crediting people the 10,000 starpoints for opening up a Starwood AMEX card.

AMEX is currently working on a resolution, and he says that there is no reason to call up AMEX or Starwood.

Personally, I called up AMEX about my not receiving the bonus points on my most recent Starwood AMEX card that I opened and got nowhere with the first rep (”you have to wait 12 to 16 weeks to receive the points”) but the supervisor I spoke with was aplogetic and credited the 10,000 Starpoints on the spot-they showed up in my Starwood account the next day!          (Hint: Things move faster when you threaten to close the account!)

Has AMEX Gone Crazy?

Monday, February 4th, 2008

In December 2006 AMEX ran an incredible promotion (which I wrote about extensively on this site) in which they offered a $250 rebate for each of 4 different business cards opened.

The cards offered were the Platinum business credit card (no annual fee), the Delta business credit card (no fee for first year, then $85), the Gold business charge card (no fee for first year, then $125), and the prestigious and benefit-laden Platinum business charge card (Was $300/year at the time, now at $395/year).

Unfortunately AMEX lost everyone’s original applications and requested that people reapply.

Originally I had applied for all 4 cards, but after the lost application fiasco I only reapplied for the platinum charge card, which is never offered for the first year for free.

I expected to have to pay $50 to carry the card for a year ($300 annual fee, less $250 rebate)

The $250 rebate posted immediately upon opening the card, what never did post was the charge card’s $300 annual fee for the first year! Sweet!

Fast forward to August 2007, I received a letter from AMEX apologizing for losing my original application, and offering a $130 credit if I would call them back to apply for a card. (I didn’t)

In September 2007 there was a present waiting for me in my Platinum charge card account to the tune of $130-more free money!

After I was hit with the $395 annual fee last month I was planning on closing the account. Luckily I was busy traveling and pushed that off! While I was enjoying what I thought would be the final fruits of my Platinum charge card at one of Continental’s excellent President Clubs, Shmuel Raigorodsky asked me if I had received another $250 from my AMEX card.

Another $250?!?

Lo and behold, there it was in my account, another $250 present from AMEX-This is the card that never stops giving!

Since then I have received dozens of giddy emails from people who have also received the $250 bonuses. The luckiest ones were the people that got the no annual fee card, but I’m quite content with the $250 subsidy off my platinum charge card.

I’m just glad that I don’t have any money invested in AXP…

My Wishlist, My Rant…

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I’m a little peeved at this AMEX promotion right now.

At exactly 2:00 I clicked on the button to get a free Jetblue $25 Gift Card.

Instead of the usual “All products are in user’s carts” message I was forwarded to another page with the words “Step  1/3″ at the top of my browser.

Unfortunately the site was pretty bogged down, so it took a good 90 seconds or so to load.

When it finally did load it said I needed to enter my AMEX credit card information again within 2 minutes to get the GC.

By the time I entered in my name and credit card info it was too late.

C’mon AMEX, you know your site will be bogged down, 2 minutes isn’t enough time to enter in that information when most of the 2 minutes were gone by the time the page loaded!

So will this stop me from trying for the free Jetblue private flight? Nah.

Update: Multiple users are reporting having success at getting approved multiple times for the same Starwood card without canceling the previous card. See the comments for more info.

Starwood AMEX Consumer Credit Card Linky
Starwood AMEX Business Credit Card Linky

Churning Info:

Both versions of the card are fully churnable, meaning that you can earn another signup bonus each time that you apply for a new card!

AMEX, unlike Chase and Citi, may not let you have more than one of the same card.

In other words, you can have a Starwood consumer and a Starwood business card, however you may not be able to get 2 Starwood consumer or 2 Starwood business cards at the same time.

Therefore you might want to cancel your current Starwood consumer or business card before applying for the same card again.

The fee for both Starwood cards continue to be waived for the first year.

When you apply for a Starwood card online you will get an approval decision within 60 seconds along with the amount of your new credit line!

You may have good luck and be able to get another 2,500 bonus points for adding an additional cardmember for free when you call up AMEX to activate your new card after you receive it in the mail.

Program Background:

Starwood Preferred Guest is a loyalty program, just like any airline’s mileage program, except that Starwood is a hotel brand and the currency is Starpoints.

Starwood hotels include chains such as Sheraton, Westin, and W hotels.

You can manage your Starwood Preferred Guest on the Starwood website: www.spg.com

You will never lose your Starpoints by canceling the Starwood credit card. The points you earn are automatically transferred by AMEX into your Starwood Preferred Guest account every month. AMEX will never take back points once they are deposited into your Starwood Preferred Guest account.

Another great benefit of the program is the ability to transfer Starpoints between household accounts for free! (Raise your hand if you wish that your favorite mileage program had the same benefit…)

If you apply for a Starwood card without providing AMEX with your Starwood Preferred Guest member number you will be automatically assigned a new Starwood Preferred Guest member number by AMEX.

Just call AMEX to find out what the number is. If you have been assigned more than one Starwood Preferred Guest member number, just call up starwood to merge the accounts.

Card Benefits:

You earn 1 starpoint per dollar spent. There is currently no points/mileage currency in the world that I know of that is more valuable than Starpoints, which is why this is my favorite card on which I do all of my spending!

Both the consumer and business Starwood AMEX cards come with AMEX’s premium return privilege-if you don’t like something that you bought for up to $300 on the card, you have 90 days to return it to AMEX for a refund!

Both cards get you Preferred Plus status in the Starwood Preferred Guest. This allows you to get free late check-out and space-available room upgrades when staying at Starwood hotels.

If you spend $30,000 on either card within 1 year, you will be upgraded to Gold status in the Starwood Preferred Guest program.

The business card also comes with AMEX Open Savings, use it when you buy a Delta or Jetblue ticket and get an automatic 3% statement rebate. Use it at Fedex/Kinko’s and many other places and get an automatic 5% statement rebate!

Redemption Options:

The possibilities for Starpoints are practically endless. One of the great aspects of the program is that you are effectively hedging your bets by earning Starpoints instead of miles. If you earn miles with one carrier, you are limited to the availability of that carrier and its’ alliance members. With Starpoints you will always have dozens of possible avenues to find the availability that you need.

Here are just a few of the many redemption possibilities:

-You can redeem them for unrestricted free nights at Starwood hotels starting at 2,000 Starpoints.

-You can redeem them for restricted Cash & Points stays starting at 1,200 points+$25.

-You can transfer them to dozens of airlines worldwide at a 1:1 ratio and get a 5,000 mile bonus for each 20,000 starpoints transferred.

-You can transfer 20,000 Starpoints to LAN and get 50,000 kilometers in the exchange. LAN will even give you 5,000 more kilometers for free just for signing up!
A RT ticket from the US to/from Brazil is just 48,000 kilometers. A RT One-World alliance ticket from the US to Israel is under 100,000 kilometers!

-You can redeem them for a Nights & Flights reward where you book 5 nights at a Starwood hotel stay at the same time as transferring points into an airline. There is a significant Starpoints savings by redeeming in this manner.

-You can transfer 20,000 Starpoints into 25,000 Amtrak points which transfer into 125,000 Choice privileges (Enough for over 6 nights at $350 Manhattan hotels!).

-You can also then transfer 250,000 Choice points (40,000 Starpoints) into 100 Southwest credits, enough for 12 free RT tickets with a yearlong free unlimited use companion pass.

What do you do with your Starpoints? Please post a comment and share!
