“How Do You Become An AAdvantage Lifetime Elite Member?”

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

lazecraze53 asked in a recent comment,

“I have been Gold on AAdvantage numerous times, how did you become a lifetime member ? And if you become a lifetime member could you move up to Platinum?”

There are 3 published levels of elite status on AA:

Gold-Requires 25,000 flight miles or 30 flight segments in a calendar year.
Platinum-Requires 50,000 flight miles or 60 flight segments in a calendar year.
Executive Platinum-Requires 100,000 flight miles or 100 flight segments in a calendar year.

Executive Platinum is generally regarded as the best elite published elite status of any domestic carrier, and is generally not attainable by any method except flying 100,000 miles or 100 flight segments.

AA has a few undocumented ways of attaining Gold and Platinum elite status.

One undocumented method of attaining elite status is via AA’s “challenge” by which you can attain Gold or Platinum elite status by flying as little as 5,000 Q-points in 90 days. I wrote about the challenge and Q-points 2 years ago, so there’s no reason to cover that topic again.

Another undocumented method: When you earn 1,000,000 AA miles you earn lifetime Gold elite status. In addition you also get 8 500-mile domestic upgrade stickers if you live in North America, or 4 one-way international upgrades certificates if you live outside North America.

When you earn 2,000,000 AA miles you earn lifetime Platinum elite status. In addition you also get 4 one-way international upgrades regardless of where you live.

AA is the only airline in the world that counts all miles towards million miler/lifetime elite status! Every other airline only counts actual “BIS” flight miles to attain lifetime elite status.

As the lifetime program is completely undocumented, it is liable to change at any time. There have been rumors for some time now that AA wants to go to actual flight miles for lifetime status, but lacks the technology to go back and see how every member actually earned their miles.

For now all miles earned, whether by flying, opening credit cards, or transfers from Starwood, count towards lifetime status. Even if you spend miles, your lifetime counter does not decrease.

You can check your own progress towards lifetime status on AA.com.

It took AA about 3 months to send me my million miler package:

“Save My AA Miles!”

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Related post: Saving Aeroplan Miles.

Ush wrote in a comment in the discussion post,

“I have some AA points expiring next week i have signed up and used a new AA credit card but they wont credit the points for 8-10 weeks will this stop the points from expiring? if not what the easiest and cheapest way of generating activity on my account?”

Opening or even using airline credit cards are a great way to extend the life of miles. Unfortunately the whole process does indeed take a while. With the AA card you will get the miles within 2 days of the statement closing date. You can check when your statement closes on citicards.com.

The problem with extending the life of miles by earning is that it may take time for the earned miles to post and in the meantime your miles may expire. While you may be able to reinstate the miles retroactively, why risk it?

Here are some better options that should work: (I do not guarantee that any of these will post in time, the only way to guarantee that is to buy miles from AA)

-Donate miles to Make-A Wish

-Get 100 AA miles by joining points.com for free. The 100 miles may not post in time, so make a token transfer from AA to another airline. Their exchange rates are horrendous, but you just need any account activity to extend the life of all your miles.

-Transfer Starpoints to AA.

-Buy a magazine subscription for as little as 400 miles:

AA

Continental

Delta

Northwest

United

If you have already lost miles, but you did an action to earn/spend miles before the expiry date, be sure to fight to get ‘em back!

Chanukah Present For All: AA And El Al Announce New Codesharing Agreement!

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

Back on 10/01 I posted about rumors of AA and El Al signing a codeshare agreement. It has now been signed.

From the press release:

“American Airlines, a founding member of the global oneworld(R) Alliance, today announced it will apply to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for authorization to begin codeshare cooperation with EL AL Israel Airlines. The application proposes that codesharing operations begin on Feb. 1, 2008.

Under the proposal, American would place its AA designator code on EL AL flights to Tel Aviv from New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), Los Angeles, Miami and Newark, as well as on EL AL fights to Tel Aviv from European gateways in London Heathrow, Paris, Madrid, Zurich and Rome.

In turn, EL AL would place its LY designator code on certain of American Airlines domestic flights out of El Al’s North American gateways — JFK, Miami, Los Angeles, Newark and Toronto. El Al would also codeshare on American’s flights between the United States and London Heathrow, Paris, Madrid, Zurich and Rome.”

It will now be possible to earn full AA elite qualifying miles and earn elite bonus miles for El Al flights. It will also be much easier to book TLV travel directly from AA.

AMR, Parent Company Of American Airlines, To Let American Eagle Fly Away…

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

AMR announced today that in a nod to shareholders they will divest of their wholy owned subsidiary, American Eagle.

Why do I care?

As airlines start to realize that they are not being properly valued as a whole they will continue to divest units of themselves in order to unlock greater shareholder value.

I do not want to see frequent flyer programs divested.

It is said that in this era of $100 oil that the only profitable airline operation is the frequent flyer business. Credit card companies buy billions of dollars worth of miles to throw at consumers as incentive to use affinity co-branded airline credit cards. The incremental cost to the airlines is minimal, the vast majority of seats given away as mileage tickets would not have been sold anyway.

Some programs have been estimated to be worth upwards of $20 Billion, far more than the airline itself.

The problem as I see it is that airlines still view mileage programs as a way to gain customer loyalty, and for the most part are very careful to preserve its’ value.

If the program is spun off into its’ own for-profit entity, the benefits of the program will surely be eroded…

Find Out The Real Reason Your AA Or UA Flight Is Delayed!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

We’ve all heard the excuse while traveling, “Sorry but the incoming flight is delayed due to bad weather, so we are not responsible for any compensation and we cannot reaccommodate you.”

Now you can prove them wrong-and demand compensation or a ticket on another airline!

American and United both have cargo websites that state the actual reason for the delay.

I tested it out-on a flight that AA.com merely said was “delayed,” AA’s cargo website said “delayed-mechanical issues.

So keep these links handy-and the next time you’re stuck at the airport when flying with AA or UA you’ll be armed with the real story!

Rumor: American Airlines Will Partner With El Al To Codeshare Tel Aviv Flights!

Monday, October 1st, 2007

The internet is abuzz with rumors of an upcoming announcement of an AA-El Al partnership.

El Al’s current codeshare agreement with Delta is ending due to Delta’s launching of non-stop JFK-TLV service that will directly compete with El Al.

The agreement would allow AA to sell AA-coded flights from the US to TLV.  Additionally it would allow for award redemptions and elite-qualifying miles to be earned on the carrier of your choice.

AA does not fly directly to TLV due to the threat of having their plane repossesed in TLV to pay off debt obligations that TWA left unpaid when they declared bankruptcy and were bought out by AA.

Into The Home Stretch!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

AA is the only remaining airline that still counts all mileage activity towards lifetime elite status.

United and Delta used to count all miles, but currently only count actual flown mileage for lifetime elite status.
Continental used to have a program that if you were a top-tier elite for 5 consecutive years you got lifetime top-tier status, alas Continental no longer offers any chance at becoming a lifetime elite today.

On AA every mile earned, even those from credit cards, is counted.
At 1,000,000 miles you get lifetime Gold Elite status and at 2,000,000 miles you get lifetime Platinum Elite status.
In addition you also get other nice goodies when you cross each million marker.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve redeemed miles, the only thing that matters is the “program to date miles.”

Today I finally entered the home stretch…I just hope they don’t pull the program before I cross the finish line!

If you have AA Gold or Platinum status you would get 25-100% more bonus flight miles. It’s not hard to get a value of over 5 cents with AAdvantage miles, arguably the easiest miles to redeem in the airline industry…

AA Launches 12 Hour Confirmed $25 Standby!

Monday, July 16th, 2007

AA announced that you can now confirm a seat for $25 for a same day travel flight change within 12 hours of your desired flight.

Previously you had to do it within 3 hours of your desired flight.

This change will make it much easier to confirm a change to switch to a flight later than your original flight, rather than be limited to changing to an earlier flight becuase of the 3 hour rule.

The best thing about confirmed standby is that it works even on mileage and priceline tickets, which normally do not allow standby at all!

Here’s hoping that other airlines will match this customer-friendly policy change!

Rules:
-Only available for domestic/caribbean flights.
-No changes are allowed in origin/destination airports.
-Changes to the connecting airports are allowed.
-Changing from an itinerary with a stop to nonstop or vice versa is allowed!

An Attempt At Clarifying People’s Confusion Regarding Starpoints…

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Note: Even if you didn’t follow these steps and you signed for the starwood credit card before getting a starwood number, you will still have a starwood number, and possibly multiple numbers if you have more than 1 credit card.
Just call up AMEX to find out what it is, and then register it on www.spg.com
If you have multiple numbers then call Starwood to merge the accounts.

Many people have emailed me and commented that although I am always posting great uses for Starpoints, I do not make the process entirely clear.

Another point of confusion among some people seems to be where the points are stored.

For starters, here’s a point of comparison:
Having points with Starwood is just like having miles on American Airlines(AA)!
-With both AA and Starwood you have a mileage account, in which you collect “miles” (AAdvantage miles with AA or Starpoints with Starwood).
-They both have affiliated credit cards, AA has one issued by Citi and Starwood has one issued by Amex.
-Every month Citi automatically transfers your miles over to your AA account, and every month Amex automatically transfers your points into your Starwood account.
-Both the AA and Starwood credit cards have signup bonuses and both cards can be churned (meaning that the signup bonus can be earned multiple times.)
-Both the AA and Starwood credit cards come in consumer and business versions.
The business versions generally have more benefits. (AA’s business card earns double miles for AA tickets, and the Starwood business card saves you up to 5% on stuff like Delta or Jetblue tickets and Fedex with Amex Open Savings)

Having said that, here is a step by step process of turning starpoints into free tickets.

Step 1: Go to www.spg.com (SPG stands for Starwood Preferred Guest.)

Step 2: In the middle column it says, “JOIN STARWOOD PREFERRED GUEST”
Enter in your Email address and click join!

Step 3: Fill out your personal information, make a spg.com user ID and password, and get a SPG Starpoints number.

Step 4: SAVE YOUR STARPOINTS NUMBER AND YOUR USER ID/PASSWORD IN A SAFE PLACE!

Step 5:Open up a consumer and business starwood amex card to receive 20,000 starpoints for signing up.(Links for the best offers can be found at the top of this site. The consumer version currently has a sweet bonus offer worth up to 25,000 starpoints!)
Be sure to enter in your Starwood number that you just received into the application forms!

Step 6:
You will see the points from the starwood credit cards show up into your starwood account within a week of when the statement closes.

Step 7:
Decide what you want to do with your starpoints! Read about the options in the knowledgebase!

Let’s say that you want to transfer the 40,000 starpoints you have (because you have churned each of the starwood cards) into 100,000 kilometers on LAN in order to get a ticket from Chicago-Tel Aviv (cost=95,000 kilometers).

Step 8: Go to the knowledgebase and find the link to get 5,000 free kilometers for signing up for a LAN account.

Step 9: Sign up for the LAN account and keep you user ID, password, and LAN number in a safe place.

Step 10: Click on the following link to take you to the transfer points page: Starpoint Transfer Linky

Step 11: Go to Airline transfer, and click on “transfer now.”

Step 12: Login to your starpoints account when prompted.

Step 13: Choose to transfer to LAN Lanpass, at a ratio of 1 starpoints=2 lanpass kilometers. You also get a bonus 10,000 kilometers for every 20,000 starpoints that you transfer, so (contrary to what the starwood site itself may indicate) 40,000 starpoints will net you 100,000 kilometers.

Step 14: When the kilometers show up in your Lanpass account call up LAN to book your mileage ticket to Israel. They should ticket you on British Airways via London.

Some tidbits that you may not know:
-You can transfer starpoints between any starpoint account in your household simply by giving starwood a call!
-You automatically become elite (preferred plus level) when you have the starwood AMEX card! With preferred plus elite status you get a free room upgrade upon check-in and a guaranteed 4pm late checkout at any Starwood brand hotel!
-You can sign up anyone in your family for a Starwood AMEX card and give AMEX your starwood number. All of the points earned will conveniently automatically go into your account!
