United has filed some amazing fares from some of Delta’s hubs to Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Additionally you can return to other cities like Los Angeles and Newark. There are infinite possibilities here, so below are just a few examples that I was able to price out, but be sure to use Google Flights and ITA Matrix to help find other possibilities and then post what you find!

See some of the options after the jump:

$385: Seattle-Melbourne-Los Angeles June 21-July 12 with a 1-3 hour connection in Los Angeles on the outbound, using Orbitz multi-city search.
$482: Seattle-Melbourne-Seattle June 21-July 12 with a 1-3 hour connection in Los Angeles, on Priceline.
$495: Seattle-Sydney-Seattle May 15-June 2 with a 1-2 hour connection in Los Angeles, on Priceline.
$500: Detroit-Sydney-Newark May 18-June 1 with with connections in Chicago and Los Angeles on the outbound and in San Francisco on the return, using Priceline multi-city search.
$572: Atlanta-Melbourne-Atlanta July 11-July 21 with connections in Houston and Los Angeles, on Priceline.
$580: Minneapolis-Sydney-Minneapolis November 13-November 24 a 1-3 hour connection in Los Angeles, on Priceline.
$580: Salt Lake City-Sydney-Salt Lake City November 13-November 24 a 1-4 hour connection in San Francisco, on Priceline.
$584: Detroit-Sydney-Detroit July 3-July 13 with connections in Chicago and Los Angeles, using Orbitz United airlines only search.

For example you can use 7.5K BA Avios or AA miles to fly from NYC to Detroit one-way to pickup a $500 ticket from Detroit to Melbourne or Sydney and then back to NYC.

Or you can use 7.5K BA Avios from LA to Seattle one-way to pickup a $385 ticket from Seattle to Melbourne and then back to LA.

There is a 10 day minimum stay, which is really the minimum amount of time that you’ll need down under.

Back in 2010 Mimi and I flew around the world on AA’s defunct round-the-world award and for Australia we stopped off in Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmania, and the Whitsunday Islands. Truly an awesome country!

-3-5 days in Sydney would give you enough time to experience the phenomenal Park Hyatt, climb the Harbour bridge, check out the Opera House, pet some Koalas and Kangaroos, and have a day in the Blue Mountains.

-4-6 days in Melbourne would allow for a road trip of the sublime Great Ocean Road and the breathtaking Grampians before going to to Malborune for Shabbos at the excellent Park Hyatt which is around the corner from a great Chabad House. A flight from Sydney to Melbourne is 4.5K BA Avios with no fuel surcharges.

-2-4 days in Hamilton Island or Cairns would give you time to snorkel or dive the Great Barrier Reef. If you’re based in Hamilton Island you’ll also be able to checked out famous Whitehaven Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. A flight from Sydney to Hamilton Island is 7.5K BA Avios with no fuel surcharges. Sydney to Cairns is 10K Avios.

-We spent 4 nights covering the entire beautiful island of Tasmania without realizing just how much driving that would entail. Doing over a week would have been ideal.  A flight from Sydney to Hobart is 4.5K BA Avios with no fuel surcharges.

-We didn’t make it to more remote places like Uluru, Kangaroo Island, Perth, or the Australian Outback, but perhaps on a future trip?

Then again 10K BA Avios can also get you from Sydney to New Zealand. That’s been on my bucket list for a very long time…

Jasmine

Any way to book this originating from and returning back to LAX

Ez

Not summer there…
Also 2 stops+10 day minimum.

Dan

@Ez:
Who said it was summer?
And some routes only have 1 connection.

Searching

If anyone finds anything from Chicago, please post! Thanks in advance!

jack

whats the best way to search for other ways and airports to find these pricing. Is there a way i can see a monthly view?

Anonymous

@Ez: Australian winter is fine.

Audrey

@Dan – New Zealand! Heading there for six weeks with my two kids – beyond awesome! Highly recommend.

Dan

@Anonymous:
Up north, winter is the ideal season anyway. But it’s mild down south as well.

Dan

@Audrey:
Amazing, how old are your kids?

Mark

Originating from NY requires 2 connections, anyway it can require 1?

Audrey

@Dan: 11 and 8. We’ll be returning from Sydney thanks to your mistake fare a couple of months ago. 🙂 (Before all these crazy prices popped up!) So we’ll spend some time in Australia, though I’m not as fond of it as you are. Still, you have given me some thoughts with the Avios pricing. Thanks!
Worth noting, Australia does require a visa (easy enough to get online). Also, flights to New Zealand are under $200 so hardly worth using Avios.

Anonymous

It’s a shame these don’t work one way! Still have the ticket from the delta error fare… Dan by any chance do you know how many avios it would cost round trip from Australia to New Zealand?

SearchGuy

You can get DL from LAX to SEA for 7k pessos

Alexander

Check with your Rabbi regarding Shabbos in New Zealand!

SoCal Dude

I need help using AAdvantage miles with no or low $ for fuel surcharge to fly USA to OSL. I keep running into US $400-$500 per tix in fee’s! Help!

Audrey

@Anonymous: 20K. But the flights are pretty cheap, check them out. With taxes and fees, not the best use of Avios.

Mohammed

Was anyone able to book the Detroit-Sydney-Newark for $501? Looks like United is repricing some fares in the $600s and $700 when u get to the checkout screen. Still great prices though. Thanks Dan!

@Dan: I’ve lived in Australia all my life 🙂 I know. I was just saying that “it’s winter” is definitely not an excuse to not go to Australia. Especially at such crazy prices!

Mike

This may be a stupid question, but I live in LA, can I grab the flight originating from Seattle, but only pick up the connecting flight in LA? and ditch the Seattle-LA portion of the ticket
The price difference is crazy!

Chonye

Any way to book so that the return flight is before the departing flight?

I want to travel Melbourne-Los Angeles-Melbourne; but I want to take advantage of these cheap tickets.

I know that doing it normally is still cheap, but nowhere near as much.

Ekr

Hobart to Sydney not available on British Air when i searched on their website, is there a different way to find this flight?

Error
British Airways and its partners do not fly this route. Please consider alternative destinations or call your Executive Club Service Centre.

Is this dead?

I am showing Detroit to Melbourne on the 14th of June to the 28th at $1,700!!!???

annonymous

Hi did anyone actually book these tickets? I have a good friend in Australia who I would live to see if I could actually get tickets this cheap for this summer… I live in LA so what would I do? Fly to detroit or seattle first and then take the connecting flight to melbourne? I’m a little confused… 😉

Kbzsk

Hi Dan,
Any advice/recommendations on using miles for flights from Sydney to Auckland? Trying to avoid fuel charges and possibly use avios, if that’s the best deal. Thank you!
