Will You Keep Verizon Unlimited Data With The Upcoming Price Increase?

Verizon really doesn’t want you to stay on unlimited data plans.
First they eliminated the ability to get a subsidized phone (though there have been glitches and other clever workarounds for that).

And effective for bills that arrive 11/15 the cost of unlimited data will climb from $29.99 to $49.99 per month on top of the base plan.

Apparently less than 1% of Verizon users still have unlimited data and I’d imagine most of the 1% crowd are likely to ditch it come November. After all, most people just don’t use that much data.

My worry is that as data speeds skyrocket with 5G there will be new uses for that data and I’d regret the decision to let unlimited data go.

Currently I tether with FoxFi and use my unlimited data as a hotspot when I travel. Of course with 5G the data speeds from my cell phone may be significantly faster than my home internet, so I might even wind up using it as a hotspot even when at home.

Then again Verizon can always take away unlimited data plans or increase the price again.

Luckily for me, it’s a decision I’ll face another day. I have a business account and I reached out to my rep who confirmed that my $23.39/month unlimited data option would remain $23.39 even after 11/15.

If you’re under contract your rates won’t go up until your contract ends.

Any unlimited data holdouts out there? Will you keep your unlimited data plan or ditch it come 11/15?

“My worry is that as data speeds skyrocket with 5G there will be new uses for that data and I’d regret the decision to let unlimited data go.”

In response to the quoted statement, keep in mind these companies are clever. What they will end up doing is keep you set as unlimited 4G data, and you’ll have to change your plan to upgrade to 5G. That happened to me when I got the original iPad on AT&T. I had unlimited 3G data for $15 and was finally forced to pay > $20 for 2GB of 4G data.

namdee

keep in mind that if you are still in contract the extra $20 will not start until after your contract is up. I have unlimited data on two phones and that are in contract until february and august of next year, respectively. so I don’t have to decide until then.

Dan, you might want to make sure that isn’t the reason your not being charged the fee in November.

Mikel T

Until the inevitable lawsuit for breach of contract against Verizon. Remember when AT&T throttled customers. Well see how this plays out…

steve

I can’t belive they are losing money from us It’s such a small percentage…not sure what to do. I foxfi all the time…nfl games and watch espn…definitely not giving it up just yet. .

pfe

hello,
is this realy true? i have the 1400 family plan with unlimited data on 2 lines. i did not recieve any notification on the increase

Joe

Dan
I never knew Verizon has an unlimited data data option! !??

stephen

FCC complaint?

Namdee

@mikel T there is no breach of contract, if you have a contract the extra fee will not start until your contract is up.

Sheri

How do you pay 23.39 for your business plan?

Dan

@Charles G.:
It’s a possibility.

@namdee:
From my rep, “Business customers are not impacted. This is just the consumer side.”

@Mikel T:
There’s no breach.

@pfe:
You’ll be notified soon unless you have a business/government plan.

@Joe:
In ended in 2011, if you had it you were grandfathered.

@stephen:
On what grounds?

@Sheri:
22% negotiated discount.

Anonymous

@Joe: maybe your were born after the unlimited days. We all used to have them.

If anyone decides to get rid of their unlimited data plan please email me. I’ll pay you for it. pridesites at hotmail.com

stephen

i didnt sign a 2 year contract with this $20 increase.

Dan

@stephen:
If you’re under contract the price won’t go up until the contract is over.

Jack

Dan is there any advantage to using FoxFi over Verizon’s mobile hotspot app?

Dan

@Jack:
I don’t think unlimited data plane work with that app.

I finally gave up my ATT unlimited 2 yrs. ago. I took the 30GB for $130 plan. While speeds increase and data use increases, they keep decreasing the cost of the data. Plus as my kids grew and now have phones, they still needed data and can share mine. i think that there are very few people that really need the unlimited data.

Tony

i have unlimited with discount through my employer (major)… am i a business customer with verizon?

GW

I had 3G and I kept unlimited to 4G by not getting the phone under my line and activated it under my line.
The question is how to they suddenly forget grandfathered plans and elements?

Alexander

Yikes! I have unlimited data on all my 4 cell phones. Every time I get a new phone, I pay full price. Now, I will have to see what to do. Made life much easier not having to remember to use wifi. Also, kids use tons of data watching football games etc! Last bill it seemed we used 25 gigs

stephen

you make it seem (as do all the other articles ive read regarding this) that no matter what itll increase in november….

JD

Thanks for this post. I two have unlimited data through my employer with said discount but I have never been able to set up the hotspot with the unlimited data. I had no idea about foxfi. Works great.

DJE

I have an unlimited 3G data card that has not been under a contract for a while now. Will this be effected? Also, does anyone know how to get into a 4G Mifi card without losing the unlimited? Even if I pay for the Mifi card in full, I would still lose it because the 3G cards do not use a sim card. The Mifi 4G cards all use a sim card and if I were to get one, it would automatically ask me to pick a data plan that is not unlimited.

Jacob

Dan hi. How do u get the unlimited plan ?

mike

The two year contract was because they paid the cost of the phone (subsidized). The 2 yr contract just made sure they extracted money from you to pay them back. I am sure The FCC will get involved in this cant just change this.

Tony

@Tony: ‘ Verizon also says that government and corporate accounts won’t be included in the price hike.’ just got my answer from the verge

Jason

@DJE: Search around online. You’ll find ways to upgrade to 4g at no extra cost. But yes, 3g and 4g unlimited are the same, they’ll both go up.

joe

This whole industry is going in a retarded direction. As tech is embraced access should get better and less restrictive, instead of tighter and more limiting. And a 50gb user of today is the 1gb user of 5 years ago, who will prob need 100gb in 2 years from now, so what are they expecting realistically?

Joey

Can you renew ur contract for another 2 years before nov 15 and keep it at the same price?

daniella

I have unlimited and I pay $39.99 per month, what will my new rate be??

Dan M

no i already left after 12 years and having payed high bills i moved to Sprints 50% off unlimited all (my kids used over 15 gigs)

George S

I plan to pay the extra $20 and keep my unlimited plan

JEREMY

@dan
Question is….can you renew contract for another 2 years before 11/15 and avoid fee hike for two more years?

moe

whats FoxFi?

is it a piece i can purchase or an app?

Verizon stinks

I for one will keep the unlimited data, despite the price gouging. I use 50-60gb/month on various work related/personal data files and do some streaming.

I will, however be paying my verizon bill in 1 dollar increments on my credit card as my little FU to Verizon. Let them eat the credit card processing fees!

Question –

I have a unlimited data plan on one line on a iPhone 5 with Verizon. Can I take that SIM out and put it in a MiFi and my unlimited will be fine?

Keeping

I was one of those low data users back when i originaly bought my unlimited data. Usually 1-2 gigs a month. I chose not to get rid of it because common sense told me my data usage would go up as technology adavanced. This has proven to be true. In my case i have developed a heavier usage habbit as smart phones have developed. Youtube xfinity spotify and several other streaming apps have become major data hogs with increased video and sound qualities. My personal usage can easily reach 15-20 gigs per month today. Considering the current cost of that much data I am still saveing money even with the price hike. I may even chose to drop my texting plan all together and just go with free data texting just inspite. If push comes to shove i may drop my minute plan down to the lowest available and utilize data calling. But until the day comes that it is still truely more expensive to hold unlimited data, i will still cling on to it.

@Jack: Other than the fact, that Foxfi is a one-time $6.99 fee for tethering, whereas VZW is a recurring $20 monthly fee? No difference.

tholkien

@Dan: The unlimited plan certainly works with Foxfi. Years ago, when I bought Foxfi, I cancelled my isp. And even though I had to give up my server (when I’m not home), it’s still well worth it. Month of January I used 1700+ GB, on VZW unlimited plan, with no throttling noticed. I stream HD movies online, through Netflix and Vudu (where I’ve uploaded part of my old 900+ dvd/blu ray collection. It most certainly works! From time to time VZW will make changes, preventing Foxfi from working. But the team usually gets it back up and running in 24-48 hours. – That has only happened 3 times, in 3+ years, for me. And before people start whining about my usage, just know that I stopped caring, when they upped my data price and my minimum minute price, along with the fact that I pay extra to have text messages. Foxfi saves me $59 every month. I’ll take that, on a heartbeat. Oh…. As a side bonus, I got rid of Cox! =)
