United has an excellent first class fare from Newark to Eugene, Oregon for just $195 each way.

Eugene is 1.5 hours from Sea Lion Caves on the Oregon coast and 2.5 hours from stunning Crater Lake, where I was during the great Northeast Blackout of 2003, just a year before I started blogging here.

The fare is valid in either direction on most dates from now through August 2016 and you can use this Google Flights link to help find valid dates.

Through 10/24 you can even route Newark-San Francisco-Eugene for a dirt-cheap hidden city first class ticket to San Francisco, though you wouldn’t be able to bring checked baggage.  The fare rules don’t allow routing on a plane with lie-flat first seats though.

You’ll want to credit these flights to a partner airline like ANA, Aeroplan, Aegean, or Singapore where you will earn 150% of the flown miles. A round-trip flight via San Francisco would earn 9,050 miles on those airlines.

After 10/24 the only connecting option is in Denver as that’s when all of the Newark-San Francisco flights transition to p.s. lie-flat service in first class.

jack

whats mileage earning if you bank to a partner like SQ or AC?

Dan

@jack:
ANA, Aegean, Aeroplan, and Singapore all award 150% of the flown miles, so ewr-sfo-eug-sfo-ewr would be 6033×1.5 = 9,050 miles

AJ

dan, how do I get back from San Francisco if I get off there?

jeremy

Dan,

Correct me if I am wrong but that should be a fully refundable ticket in the A fare class.

Dan

@AJ:
You buy a different way home.

@jeremy:
It is fully refundable.

sam

Mike B

Can I just use it to go to Denver?

Jon

the flight to SFO is lie flat seat, right?

Jordan

@Jon, flight to SFO won’t be lie flat until 10/25 or later

Dan

@sam:

@Mike B:
Yes.

@Jon:

Ryan k

Are these refundable if booked through United?

@Ryan k:
It’s refundable no matter where you buy it from.

“After 10/24 the only connecting option is in Denver as that’s when all of the Newark-San Francisco flights transition to p.s. lie-flat service in first class.”

INCORRECT. I booked quite a few of these AFTER 10/24, in glorious, full lie-flight business class on a United p.s. flight. Here’s how:

On the United site (I used the old version), do a “Multiple Destinations” search. Search for a total of FOUR flights, as follows:

EWR-SFO
SFO-EUG
EUG-SFO
SFO-EWR

You can use Matrix to search for valid dates; for example, as I am writing this, you can find a same-day turnaround on November 16 for $385, so enter 11/16/2015 as the date for each of the 4 flights.

Now, here’s the important part: for EWR-SFO and SFO-EWR, set “Depart cabin” to “Business/BusinessFirst”. But for SFO-EUG and EUG-SFO, set it to “First/Global First”. YOU MUST DO THIS PART OR IT WILL NOT WORK!!!

Finally, as an added bonus (just to make sure it goes smoothly), select “Enter specific classes of service”, and type in “J, C, A”.

The search will begin, and you will choose your flights one at a time. As you choose each flight, you will see ridiculous prices next to the button for selecting that flight, in the thousands of dollars; select your flights anyway, and keep going. WHEN YOU GET TO THE 4TH FLIGHT, THE PRICE WILL SUDDENLY DROP TO $385 (or similar, depending on the dates).

Happy trails, enjoy United p.s., and don’t forget to order kosher meals! 🙂

PraiseCanada

@Moishebatchy Sweet how did you figure that out?

Dan

@Moishebatchy:
Great find.
Alas, this appears to be dead now 🙁

Ryan k

I wish I had booked the way you did moishebatchy… I am pretty happy with my flight through Denver though since I happen to live in Eugene… Would have booked a few more if I had seen this in time. I did a double take when I saw a deal including a Eugene flight! That will likely never happen again… Thank you Dan!!

Dan

@Ryan k:
Gotta signup for the Twitter alerts, ya never know. There’s actually been 4 times that Eugene has been mentioned: http://www.dansdeals.com/index.php?s=eugene

Moishebatchy’s method was definitely the way to go, alas that was probably too late for people to book it before it was pulled.

Moishebatchy

@PraiseCanada: I’m a travel agent. The way my mind analyzes these things would make you run from the room, screaming, from an equal mixture of sheer terror and absolute boredom. 😀

Ryan k

@dan I actually do have your tweets sent through sms and it’s the best way ever to get on the deals. Problem was I left my phones side for a while… Oops

Dan

@Moishebatchy:
Lol

@Ryan k:
Just have it surgically implanted, problem solved.

Will

@Moishebatchy: While this particular deal is dead, do you have any generalized advice on how to recognize these sorts of enhanced booking methods in the future? I was lucky enough to grab roundtrip tickets for my girlfriend and I before it died… but now I’m wishing we were flying p.s. using your method!! Would appreciate any insights you have 🙂

Moishebatchy

@Will: Nope, sorry, was more of an instinct + experience thing… but hey, look at the bright side: if you credit to Aegean, at least you’ll be earning more miles than p.s. would, since United domestic first (A class) earns 150% miles on Aegean, while p.s. (J or C class) only earns 100%! 😛

zow

@Moishebatchy:

I’m still hoping for a DDS (Dan, when???), but if that’s not going to happen, maybe we can have a MBS?
