Until June 24th, the Chase Freedom Visa is offering 20,000 point signup bonus for spending $500 within 3 months plus another 2,500 bonus points for adding a free additional user, for a total of 22,500 points.

This is marketed as a $200 signup bonus and $25 for adding an additional user, but you’ll actually get 22,500 points that can be used for $225 cash back, though the points are far more valuable when transferred into airline/hotel/train miles.

Previously the signup bonus was 10,000 points. Typically if you applied within the past 90 days Chase will match your bonus to the current bonus offer.

Chase Freedom is an excellent no annual fee card.  It’s an easier card to get that most other Chase cards as it doesn’t require a Signature level $5,000 credit line. The real beauty of the card is in the quarterly 5% categories. Again, while they call it 5% cash back you’ll really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be worth much more than 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending per quarter you will earn at least 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points (7,500 points per quarter at 5 points per dollar spent).

2015 bonus categories:
Q1: Grocery stores, Movie theaters, Starbucks
Q2: Restaurants, Bed, Bath & Beyond, H&M, and Overstock.com
Q3: Gas stations and more to be announced.
Q4: Amazon.com and more to be announced.

Click here to activate this quarter’s Chase Freedom 5% categories.

Through the end of 2015, the Freedom card also earns a 10% annual point dividend. The final dividend will be paid out in February 2016 for 2015 purchases.  That means you’ll earn an effective 5.5 points per dollar on purchases from the 5 point categories and you’ll earn an effective 1.1 points per dollar everywhere else.

Freedom alone can’t transfer points into much more lucrative airline/hotel/train currencies, but if you or your spouse has a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Plus card then you can transfer points from Freedom to one of those cards and from there to your favorite travel currency.  You can read at the end of this post which currencies they can transfer to and why those points are much more valuable than just taking cash back.  The Freedom card can also keep your points alive for free if you do close one of those cards.

If you use those points for a trip worth where they are worth 2 cents each and then you’ll have effectively earned 10-11% back on those “5 point categories.” The sky is the limit of the value of airline miles as they aren’t tied to the cost of a ticket.

Dan, I got a Freedom less than 90 ago, how can I get Chase to match my bonus with this current bonus offer? Thanks.

Buenos naches

@Shalom – login to your chase account and send them a secured message. Your chances are pretty good they will match if you applied in the last 90 days.

Yitzshpitz

If I want to downgrade my SP to a freedom and also want to get this bonus. Can I do both and which one should I do first?

Shloimy

Is there any way I can signup for another one?

new york

For a beginner starting out do you recommend doing a 2bm? If yes for which other card?

Sapphire

Hi Dan. I’m am downgrading my sapphire preferred to a regular sapphire card. Will I be able to transfer points from my freedom card to a regular sapphire card? Thanks!

DallasDan

Dan (or expert Danners), I have a Freedom card from 5+ years ago that I still use (in addition to a number of more recently activated Chase cards). Will I be able to get the sign up bonus if I sign up for a new Freedom card? Can I have two Freedom cards to begin with?

Yoely

You can’t have 2 Freedom at once .
And if you have already a Freedom you could be additional to another acc. Additional card holder is just a authorize user .

Work-for-ur-muny

@Shloimy: You can make this application in reverse. Put your wife as primary and you as additional user.

Sam

Dan, I already have a freedom card. Can I get approved for another one?

Dan

@Shalom:
SM them.

@Yitzshpitz:
You would need to apply for Freedom first, as once you have one open it would be difficult to get another new app approved.

@Shloimy:
Sign your wife up?

@Wiz23:
Did you offer to shift credit lines around?

@dave:
Yes.

@new york:
United has a limited time offer ending today.

@Sapphire:
Yes.

@DallasDan:
You would get the bonus if approved, but it would be difficult to get approved if you already have the same card open.

@Yoely:
I have multiple Freedom cards, but that’s due to downgrades from Sapphire Preferred.

Yuval

I just called the number on the back of my Freedom card and they changed the promotion from 10000 to 20000 points no questions asked. Thank you!

Dan

@Yuval:
Yup, Chase is great like that.

Stephen

Called the reconsiderations line and was told that I’ve had too many credit applications in the last two years (in general not specifically with Chase I only have two cards with them) and that there was nothing they could do, wouldn’t even let me play with credit lines. Any way around that?

freedom

Dan Q3 is gas stations and kohl’s

Can a spouse move freedom UR to another spouse sapphire preferred UR account?

momo22

Nate

Dear ,

Thank you for contacting Chase regarding the 20,000 points
enrollment bonus offer.

I am pleased to advise that I did add 10,000 points to the
account so that it receives a total of 20,000 points for
an enrollment bonus. You will see this adjustment on the
next statement. This adjustment is available for
redemption now.

Please note that the original offer on your account of
earning $100 bonus (equivalent to 10,000 points) when you
spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account
opening posted to the May 2015 statement.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

Thank you,

Nate

Is there a way to manufacture spending at restaurants or Bed Bath and Beyond? If I buy a bunch of stuff at BBB and then return it in July would the points be taken back?

Shragi
