Last time I used a Groupon from Talia’s they added a 15 or 20% tip based on the value of the meal, not what we paid for the Groupon. It added a significant amount to the total paid. Is that normal?

Zow

A great deal, but worth noting that it cannot be used on Shabbat or chagim.

Elchanan

Nice. Thanks

Itshappening

yes. that is normal @jason. for most every restaurant.

Shimmy

It’s normal but it should be done based on the value you actually ordered and not the max possible value. In other words the concept is that the service staff should not lose out on what they would have received if there was no discount. I think they sometimes use a higher amount as a base which is really stealing.

No, Talia’s specifically racks up the price with this Groupon. No one I know has ever gone there without it. Me, my wife, and another couple went once with a groupon that we paid $100.00 for, and at the end of the meal, each couple had to put an additional $50.00 on the table. It was absurd. If 4 people get the steak, which is 50 dollars on the menu, they charge you $40.00 tip on that item alone.
So at the end of the day, with the Groupon, it still costs you about 100 bucks to go there.
In my experience you can go as a couple to Le Maraise for 120, and I leave much happier.

@David – that’s because the steak is not considered an ‘entree’ that is specified in the Groupon…I was there a few weeks back and paid tax and tip of $10 and that’s only because I tipped $5…

Mr g

@Dovid: Im sorry dovid but if you call them up they will straight out tell you that you have to pay tax and tip on the retail value which is way over priced…. It’s not something they hide pick up the phone and ask them.
As far as you paying tax and tip a total of 5 is a lie because it’s more even if it is at the groupon value of 65.

Put please do tell if you have a different way and who you spoke to that says it would only be 10 besides the groupon???

Neil

@Dovid: I went to Talias about a month ago (not my first time there) and used the Groupon and at the end they only charged me like a 10-12 dollar tax and tip. Feeling guilty, I approached the waitress and told her that I thought she was making a mistake and that my tax and tip should be closer to 30 bux. She then responded that since many ppl complained they don’t charge the tip on the whole bill. That being said a friend of mine went there since and had to pay tax and tip on the entire retail value. It seems to go either way, prob depending on whos manager at the time..
