Update: Tomorrow is the final day to book business and first class awards before the devaluation.

The new rates go into affect at midnight London time on 04/28, so book before 6:59pm EDT on Monday, 04/27.

Economy awards and short-haul business awards are not being devalued but you’ll want to book those JFK-Vancouver Cathay first and Boston-Dublin business class awards now!

Originally posted on 01/28:

BA Avios were introduced in November 2011 and brought in a new era of ridiculously cheap award rates for short-haul nonstop flights.

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about BA Avios can be found in this post.

Effective 04/28/15 they will be devaluing their award chart, but fortunately they are leaving economy class redemptions unscathed!

Until 04/27 you can continue to redeem using the current award levels, regardless of when the flight is.

On 04/28 there will be several award charts to choose from.
-There will be a new award chart for off-peak travel dates for flights on British Airways only. Here is a list of off-peak travel dates.
Again, that chart does not apply to travel on partner airlines.
-There will be a new chart for travel on partner airlines.
-There will be a new chart for travel on Iberia, but that hasn’t been released yet. Iberia flights between London and Madrid will be priced as a regular partner award.

I’ve compiled 3 charts where you can compare the old rates with the new rates.  All rates are for one-way flights.

Economy awards on partner flights are unchanged.

Economy awards on BA flights get cheaper. That’s good as intra-Europe and intra-Africa flights on BA can be a good deal if you have earned at least 1 Avios in the past 12 months as part of their Reward Saver program which has very low fuel surcharges. Other BA economy awards are usually a terrible deal as they are subject to heavy fuel surcharges.

A flight from Miami-Cancun or NYC-Toronto remains a 4.5K award. A flight from London to Paris or from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls off-peak goes down to 4K.

Business awards in the first 3 zones get cheaper on BA and remain the same on partners. The pain sets in at zone 4.

-A flight from Miami to Nassau or NYC to Montreal remains a 9K award.
-A flight from JFK to Bermuda remains a 15K award.
-A flight from JFK to Cancun remains a 20K award.
-However a flight from JFK to Costa Rica or Los Angeles on American, from Boston to Dublin on Aer Lingus, or from JFK to Vancouver on Cathay Pacific in lie-flat reverse herringbone suites jumps from 25K to 37.5K.
-A flight from NYC to Berlin on Air Berlin, from Chicago to Dublin on Aer Lingus goes from 40K to 60K. NYC to London on BA goes from 40K year-round to 50K off-peak or 60K peak.
-JFK to Buenos Aires goes from 50K to 75K.
-A flight from JFK to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific goes from 70K up to 105K.
-Los Angeles to Sydney jumps from 100K to 150K.

First class awards go way up in every zone.  This especially hurts within the US as 2 cabin flights are priced as coach and first class.
-A flight from NYC to Detroit goes up from 13.5K to 18K.
-A flight from NYC to Miami goes up from 22.5K to 30K.
-A flight from Los Angeles to Chicago or Columbus goes up from 30K to 40K.
-A flight from Los Angeles to JFK, Pittsburgh, or Maui on American or from JFK to Vancouver in the most comfortable seat and bed in the sky on Cathay Pacific goes from 37.5K to 50K.
-A flight from Dallas to Maui goes from 60K to 80K. JFK to London goes from 60K year-round to 68K off-peak and 80K peak.
-JFK to Rio de Janeiro goes from 75K to 100K.
-A flight from JFK to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific goes from 105K up to 140K.

There are other changes to how many miles are earned on paid flights and the full details can be found here.
Free add-on flights within the UK (such as London-Manchester) will only apply to long-haul redemptions and not on intra-Europe awards.

The silver lining in all of this?  Those beloved cheap 4.5K, 7.5K, and 10K coach awards that everyone has fretted are unsustainable have been given the green light!  I wouldn’t expect another award chart overhaul anytime soon.

sheina

Thanks for the update. However, I find it very difficult to find award availability on ba.coms website. I’m trying to get a flight lga to mia and keeps coming up as non available. Any ideas?

Dan

@Anonymous:
And what do you usually redeem for?

@sheina:
Please click on the link in the 2nd paragraph of this post. All the tips and tricks are there.

JEFF

HOW MANY MILES BUSINESS CLASS IS JFK TO TLV

Dan

@JEFF:
It depends on the routing.
Please click on the link in the 2nd paragraph of this post to learn more.

Also, you may want to invest in a keyboard with a non-stickied caps-lock.

Don’t jinx the best thing to happen to the mileage game.

Is there such a thing a first class on US domestic flights? I thought on domestic first is business?

Dan

@Anonymous:
The pricing have just been reaffirmed. And that’s good news.

@CX 🙁:
Yup, the Vancouver increases really sting.

Ba just removed YQ on shorthaul fights. So on fights leaving London this doesn’t really change anything as the taxes are over $27.5 either way, so reward flight saver still helps. But consider flying from a place that doesnt have high airport taxes, and you’ll save money. Just surgery reason to book two one ways ava not roundtrip

Shmuel

Does this mean that flights from JFK-TLV may now be a better deal on BA than AirBerlin? Or is some combo a good way to do it? Dan, I think that even though Avios are not necessarily the best way of getting to TLV, lots of people are particularly interested in the effects that this change has on that route. Thanks.

@Yehuda

What’s this Reward Saver program? How would one earn at least 1 point every 12 months in that system?
Don’t see anything about it in the Knowledgebase.

high end hobo (cont)

Another* not surgery

Take Luxembourg for example, it’s airport charges are practically zero. So an off peak flight fron LUX to LHR is cheaper in miles, and fees, then from DTW-NYC.
Also BA has been cutting long haul YQ by tiny amounts in the past two months. Hopefully it’s the beginning of better things to come.
Just wanted to point out a sweet spot on the new award chart is off peak SIN-SYD

Dan's the Man

I just transferred 150,000 Amex points to get 210,000 (with the current 40% bonus). Well I guess with the 40% bonus it was still a good move. I’ll probably use most of them for coach domestic flights anyway so I guess it’s not too bad for me.

Ez

I don’t get it. Based on this chart of would appear that an economy flight from nyc-yyz off peak would have gone down to 4k???

Moshe Rubinovich

I just moved to Norfolk, VA. It’s a little tiny airport with very little options for flights and their very expensive. BA Avios is a great way to fly. Any tricks to get free baggage to/from JFK/LGA as from those locations you can only fly direct on Delta or USAir?

oy vey

this is a week after we are told to get the BA chase card because avios is so great ????

Anonymous

@Ez:

If BA flies there then yes, but not partner airlines like American.

Al

Guess that’s why they were offering the 40% transfer bonus.

bob

@Moshe Rubinovich
Get a Delta or USAir credit card and you can check in 1 bag for free

flying

Dan if british does not show availability on an award flight but AA.com does is it then possible to call british and get it or not?

Anonymous

@flying: +1

Anonymous

@flying: yes, but you’ll have to book it over the phone

hvaces42

So is now the time to transfer MR even if you dont need it for immediate use? You’re locking in the 40% discount which is still cheaper than the soon to be old rates in most zones.

zow

@Dan:
“Also, you may want to invest in a keyboard with a non-stickied caps-lock. ”
–LOL (I mean, lol).

zow

Dan, can you say a little more about the “Reward Saver” aspect of BA’s program, as you noted below:

“Economy awards on BA flights get cheaper. That’s good as intra-Europe and intra-Africa flights on BA can be a good deal if you have earned at least 1 Avios in the past 12 months as part of their Reward Saver program which has very low fuel surcharges. Other BA economy awards are usually a terrible deal as they are subject to heavy fuel surcharges.”

How do I earn “at least 1 Avios”?
Do I need to fly on BA?

Dan

WOW good thing I did not transfer my Amex points. Was planning on traveling to Israel with these points. Totally not worth it anymore. I’ll transfer to ANA instead.

Chaim

So if I wanted to use avios to go nyc to tlv and was planning to use air Berlin for 60K round trip to avoid BA taxes, is the 17K I’m saving if I fly with BA worth the taxes? (Also probably easier to book BA flights?)

flying

so can british book over the phone flights I see available on aa.com even with a stop? is it more points with a stop?

dave

what do I do if I need two seats and says only 1 available? there is still few months till flight.

Dan1

What is considered ‘peak’ anyway? Is that a time of year (like late December) or time of day? Or both?

Dan1

Sorry didn’t read that link. NVM previous question

Achshell

This makes BA points worthless! American Airlines is 20k plus $5.60 to London. On BA it is 20k plus $256.80. Same aircraft!
And yes, these are the awards I am looking for, I do not need local flights. Big mistake, BA!

Yehoshua
Airlines

So these animals give a promo so everyone transfers their points to them, and then they get us…

Jacobi

Dan,

Any idea whether we will be able to make changes to a ticket booked before April 28th after April 28th at the old rates?

Chapshnell

@airlines 4,500 OW shorthaul in the US is animals?
Happy I booked JFK-YVR RT in F & J. Total cost 45,000 MR. LOLOLOL

Berlin

ok, so going ny- berlin and berlin-tlv on BA aircraft, how much is tax per segment?
Is there anywhere a schedule showing tax per segment for popular destinations?

ikey

@Berlin:Taxes; NY-Berlin-TLV is $24.93 TLV-Berlin-NY is $64.11. These numbers are only if you book the itinerary on one ticket, even one way tickets. If you break up the itinerary say NY-Berlin then Berlin-TLV the taxes more then double. The exact amount of tax shows up on BA/Avios when you click on any flight. Very easy just try it.

Achshell

@ikey: It will be much more after the change. My guess, $650 in fuel, taxes, bla bla. They are killing their whole system. They will get hurt hard once it will affect them very badly. People will stop using them.

Dan2

@Achshell: Do realize that all economy flights are still the same price. It’s just business class that took the hit. Fly economy. I would say 90% of users at least only use economy. Relax.

Berlin

Why will tax change after new rules?
@ikey, what is the breakdown of your numbers? does it include both segments? on which airline?

@Dan, any way to list a full detailed list of tax by airline using avios? Thank you

Anonymous

is the flights via Brazilian to Toronto available yet or not thanks in advance

YOSEF

I have a BA companion ticket, which routes is that best used for?
(ticket with high taxes not worth it)

joetraveler

Do you have to do anything special to qualify or sign up for the BA reward saver program for intra-Europe flights? When you say that you must ‘earn’ one Avios to qualify, do transfers from UR count?

thank you

jim

what about biz from ORD-YYZ or ORD-LGA?

it is 9500 biz.

Is it going up as well?

Moishe

What does this mean for the lax-jfk route?
I used to fly first for 37.5k each way.
What will it be going forward?

Shimon

@Dan

Do you know if American Airlines will be a BA’s partner since they absorb US Airways?

Dan

@YOSEF:
Not much.

@joetraveler:
No.
Yes.

@jim:
ORD-YYZ remains 9K one-way in business.
ORD-LGA is a first class route and will go up from 22.5K to 30K.

@Moishe:
50K, as I wrote in the post.

@Shimon:
Both AA and US are BA partners.

Moishe M

@Dan

Is there any other way to get amex points into AA miles?
AA only charges 32.5K for first saver JFK-LAX, which BA will not charge 50K each way

Mocha

How does premium economy play into this?

winner

I just called chase british airways card and complained about the devaluation and they gave me 10k points for free!!

Anonymous

Of I book now and change my flight but stay in the same cabin can I lock in the current rates

Anonymous

Thanks Dan. Booked jfk – yvr Bus on the way their and First on the red eye home.

Anonymous

If I change my flight after the devaluation will I have to shell out the extra avios

Steve

Any ideas how to reach Amman, Jordan?

mixed up

Does this all mean that if i sell my avios i’ll be getting less for each point?

Larry

@Yehoshua: if you book a flight now, can you change the dates later without paying additional miles?

naf

Dan, what am i missing? is it now 100k on air berlin to israel from nyc round trip? what is the best way to get there now?

Tony

BA Avios business class flying is no longer worth it on long haul flights
By the time you take the tens of thousands of points required plus the cash you are nearly at the
Price of buying a ticket.

It’s outrageous and it affects Cathay as well

Time to get out!
